sopa media
[edit]yo! shall we sort by media type? or maybe english/non-english? we're going to need to do something... I'm on irc, ping me. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 03:05, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- On IRC! Sorting by language is probably smart... - Stephen LaPorte (WMF) 03:22, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
sv:Funding survey
[edit]"This invitation is being sent only to those projects where the survey has been translated in full or in majority into your language." Well, I do not think it looks like Swedish at all. Where can we improve the translation? -- Lavallen (talk) 17:44, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hello! The translation can be improved at Meta:Survey_of_how_money_should_be_spent/Questions/sv. Also, note that in the survey, you select the language with the pull-down menu at the top. Thanks, translation help is much appreciated! Cheers, - Stephen LaPorte (WMF) 17:53, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- As I'm seeing this now by chance: That would be much appreciated: sv:Wikipediadiskussion:Översättningsfrågor#Korrigering av enkäten. :-) I thought that a bad translation would be better than no Swedish translation at all, so I tried my very best (only having sv-1). I didn't know how to get people to proofread the text. So thank you very much in advance. --Geitost 18:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- I must admit I had to change language from Swedish to English to be sure to understand it (though I probably would have got pretty much everything it wanted to say even if I hadn't had access to an English version), so I'm not sure it's a good idea to link to the survey in Swedish until the text has been proofed – almost all active users on Wikipedia can read English without problem and as a general rule we prefer en-N to sv-1 or sv-2, so to speak. Thank you for trying, though! /Julle (talk) 19:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- And, just to be perfectly clear: having some kind of Swedish translation is certainly better than not having one, should a user for some reason be uncomfortable with English. However, at the moment, I'd primarily link even Swedish users to the English one (if that's decided by the URL and not IP location), or at least link to both. /Julle (talk) 19:49, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry about the confusion--I posted the survey before I realized it had not been proofread. I will update the survey as it gets corrected on the meta page. Unfortunately, I can't control which language displays by default on this survey. Thanks for letting me know! Cheers, - Stephen LaPorte (WMF) 21:42, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

SoC 2012 / Development for Wikinews
[edit]Hey there!
I hope a few other Wikinewsies have noted the highlighting of the survey; it wasn't until shortly after completing it that bawolff (whose done a lot of the gadget work for Wikinews) suggested I chase up on mw:Summer of Code 2012 regarding some of the much-needed development for Wikinews.
I know that's something I should probably take up with Fabrice, but I get the distinct impression he's swamped with efforts to "subvert" the feedback tool into a recruitment tool. Anyway, with a picture worth a thousand words, I've documented our current review setup, and some of the issues, as sub-pages of my MediaWiki userpage. If I knew who would: (i) Find this most-interesting, (b) Pick apart the workflow with a view to breaking into codable requirements, and (c) Have time to do so—or at least enthuse a GSoC student to do so—I'd be bugging them instead of you. If you know who, point and I'll shoot. ;-)
Incidentally, if you deal with legal stuff, I hope you got to see my emails regarding misuse of the Wikinews mark, and going after cybersquatted domains. The exchange with Michelle suggest she at least found it most amusing. --Brian McNeil /talk 17:02, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- Wow, your description of the Wikinews workflow is very detailed! Sumanah would know if there are any GSoC students who are looking for a project. She also coordinates with open source developers and runs hackathons, so you should let her know about your proposal. Cheers, - Stephen LaPorte (WMF) 22:35, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

SOPA-like issue
[edit]Since you were involved in Wikipedia:SOPA from the WMF perspective, I wonder if the foundation is aware of commons:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_Panorama_2015 and Wikipedia:Freedom of Panorama 2015 issues? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:56, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Piotrus. Aeryn and I are following the issue, and we published a short blog post on the topic here. Stephen LaPorte (WMF) (talk) 23:30, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

A discussion you may want to look at
[edit]There's a discussion going on at Wikipedia talk:Conflict of interest#Deceptive advertising, FTC on Native advertising. It would be great if you or anyone else from WMF legal could take a look at the discussion, and if there are any comments that you would like to make there in light of what editors have been saying, it would be much appreciated. Thanks! --Tryptofish (talk) 22:08, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, I added an initial reply. I hope this is a helpful place to start. Best, Stephen LaPorte (WMF) (talk) 23:30, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks very much! --Tryptofish (talk) 23:37, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
- In response to your request that we post questions that might be researched, I think editors are interested in whether the FTC rules would put any further restrictions on what paid edits we should allow. Would the rules actually make it necessary to ban paid edits entirely? --Tryptofish (talk) 23:42, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
- A closely related issue, about EU law, has been raised at Wikipedia talk:Conflict of interest#Statutory advisory warnings for Wikipedia readers in Germany and European Union per WP:COI. --Tryptofish (talk) 01:04, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
