Lethocerus photo

[edit]

Hi, thank you for adding the photo of a Lethocerus specimen to the Commons. Can you provide some context as to where this was collected? It is definitely not Benacus griseus. Thank you. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 23:42, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing this out and correcting the identification on the commons page. I believe the specimen was collected in Connecticut, but I don't know the exact location. This was on public display, labeled as Benacus griseus. I am not knowledgeable about insects so I simply followed the identification on the label. P2N2222A (talk) 00:41, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, it may be L. uhleri, dependent on that location being correct. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 20:21, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stellasaurus skeletal

[edit]

Hello Skye.

I would like to describe Stellasaurus on Polish Wikipedia and there are no good reconstructions available for use and could you make and share on Commons? What size could it have reached? Thank you. Aventadoros (talk) 19:09, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stellasaurus is only known from a few fragments of which there are freely-licensable photos already uploaded to commons. I think these would be more useful than a skeletal diagram. Skye McDavid (talk) 22:59, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, the diagram from the work of Wilson et al.
is more useful. What do you think of Jack Horner's hypothesis about the origin of Pachyrhinosaurus from Styracos? aurus Aventadoros (talk) 09:23, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have not looked into Ceratopsids in detail so I have no opinion Skye McDavid (talk) 15:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bisticeratops skull and skeletal diagram

[edit]

I have checked the sizes of basal skull lenght and total lenght of Bisticeratops diagrams but they do not agree with those given by Dalman et al. (2022) as the scale bar is the wrong size. Please re-check if you can. Aventadoros (talk) 20:43, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thank you for pointing this out. Basal skull length (as defined by Dalman et al 2022 Table 1) is measured from the rostral to the occipital condyle. In most tetrapods (including) most dinosaurs and basal ceratopsians, the occipital condyle is at the very back of the skull. However, in Ceratopsidae, the occipital condyle is in roughly in the middle of the skull, with the frill extending behind it, as shown in this photo. The scalebar size is correct. Skye McDavid (talk) 18:51, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I checked the dimensions in ImageJ and the BLS for Bisticeratops came out to me around 86 cm, when Dalman et al, 2022 report 98.5 cm. The total length also does not agree, as the reconstruction is 4.6 m, far too short. The holotype specimen of Bisticeratops was about 7 m long. Scale bars should be corrected. Aventadoros (talk) 14:57, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the skull diagram, the scale bar is 1695 px. Using the measure tool on GIMP, the BSL (rostral to occipital condyle) is 1671 px.
1671 px / 1695px/m = 98.4 cm
The reported BSL is 98.5 cm. Given the imprecision of a measurement taken on a screen, this is well within the margin of error. I have posted screenshots of the measurements here.
As for the version with a full-body silhouette, the proportion of skull size to scale bar is the same, since the full-body silhouette diagram was made by duplicating the clip file for the skull-only diagram. The skull and scale bar layers were grouped and always scaled together to ensure consistency. I don't know where your length estimate of 7 meters for the Bisticeratops holotype came from so I cannot evaluate its accuracy. The silhouette here is scaled based on CMN 8547, which is a very close relative. In either case, it was made following the WP:DINOART guidelines on this type of diagram. Please let me know if you have further questions.

The 7 metres for Bisticeratops I got from Fig 1. from Dalman et al. (2022). Aventadoros (talk) 17:38, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
