Newsletter time
Hi! I was hoping to get out a backlog elimination drive newsletter soon to update everyone and to act as a reminder to those who have still not done any edits. There is a draft in my sandbox. If you have time to do those magical things you do, such as copy editing the draft and adding charts and color, it would be appreciated. Then we can get Noraft to send it out via AWB. If you do not have time let me know and we will work something out. Thanks :-) --Diannaa (Talk) 15:29, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, OK, done. If Noraft is too busy I have AWB but I don't know how to use it. If he could teach me, I can send it out as well. It would be good to also send this to all 270+ GOCE members, not just drive participants. They can be found at Category:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors members. This means that we will also have to have some wording in the newsletter to address those who have not signed up yet. We might just pick up a few last minute participants, plus it's good PR. - S Masters (talk) 15:57, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I've decided to help out, also. I hope that's alright. The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 16:06, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- LOL Go right ahead. Any help is appreciated. BTW, did you change your username? - S Masters (talk) 16:09, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- No, just the sig. Why, do you think I should change it to say "Utahraptor" instead of "The Raptor"? The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 16:11, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- No, it's OK. I'm sure we'll all get used to it. :-) - S Masters (talk) 16:27, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Newsletter
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update. Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board. The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated. This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk. |

July drive home page
Hi! The July drive home page is starting to load really slowly for some of us on slower internet connections. So I am suggesting that people with lengthy article lists can move them to a difference location, such as their sand box or their talk page. Just leave a link to the new location where your article list used to appear. See my section for an example of how this could be done. Thanks. And thanks for having such a long list of completed articles! Your contributions are appreciated. --Diannaa (Talk) 23:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC) |
- OK, done. - S Masters (talk) 03:23, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I notice that you carried out the GA review for Papers (song), which contains the file File:Papers.ogg. The good article criteria criterion 6a states that media must be "tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content". WP:SAMPLE states that non-free music samples must be a maximum of 10% of the original recording, and less than 30 seconds. File:Papers.ogg was 31 seconds, too long to satisfy this policy, but I have now trimmed it. Next time you GA review a music article please note these points. Thanks, Adabow (talk · contribs) 10:23, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for telling me. I did check, but was not aware of the 10% rule. Thanks for fixing it. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 15:55, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Another backlog elimination drive...
Hi! Looking at the recent successful GOCE copyedit backlog elimination drive, I believe we can all day it was successful. I've noticed that there is another severe backlog that, like the copyedit backlog, also significantly takes away from the quality of the article. I have been attempting to eliminate some of the backlog myself, but progress is slow. Since you have experience in organizing such events, would it be possible for us to organize another backlog elimination drive for articles with a promotional tone? There currently is no group of editors dedicated to cleaning up that backlog, so a new group would have to be organized. Please tell me if you are interested. Thanks. - Hi, yes I am happy to help you out. Let me know what you need me to do. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 15:19, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- How was the GOCE elimination drive organized? By that, I mean, how was it able to attract so many editors and eliminate a realtively large backlog? Netalarmtalk 19:53, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- You can read this short article on how we did our first drive, which only had 30+ editors - Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-06-14/WikiProject report. - S Masters (talk) 01:59, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

GOCE final newsletter
I'm developing the final newsletter for the Guild of Copy Editors, and I'm going to need your help. Here is the link. Do you think you could help me out? Thanks in advance! The Raptor You rang?/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 14:03, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll have a look at it. - S Masters (talk) 15:20, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- I've finished my bits. I have made some comments/notes. Please take a look. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 15:46, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- It says on the drive page that those who participated in the May drive, the words are cumulative toward barnstars (but not the leaderboard). So does this mean I should add their May totals to their July totals? The Raptor You rang?/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 15:48, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes you do. May + July = their final total (for barnstars only, does not count for the leaderboard). - S Masters (talk) 15:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I've finished my copyedits now. It's looking good. Just needs a final update with the closing numbers (and my other notes on the page). Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 16:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

- Hi! I was wondering if you could do me a favour and make us a barnstar award for the leader board runner ups. If you could make one like the gold-star leader board award but in silver? That would be great. I don't knowz how to do it. Thanks --Diannaa (Talk) 14:01, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
