Happy New Year Rosiestep!

Happy New Year Rosiestep!

One of these from me as well. Here's to many more women writers in 2015 - happy editing, and keep up the good work! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:56, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks so much, INeverCry and Ser Amantio di Nicolao, and Happy New Year to both of you!! I look forward to working with you on lots of articles in 2015. Be well, --Rosiestep (talk) 02:56, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Broadway

What we could really use is a nav box but one with an interactive map linking all articles on Broadway geographically. Not sure it is possible but I saw somethng similar in the Vegas strip article or something like that. I'm not really sure how long it is though!♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:15, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

53 km!! Yikes!! OK then, a nav box connecting articles on a map by sizable section of Broadway and then links to other boxes underneath to move onto the next one etc...♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:18, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

I created Template:Broadway (Manhattan). Some of the landmarks aren't categorised as Broadway (Manhattan) yet which you might finish off. I suppose wikiatlas does provide a map. It's not ideal but buildings in some sort of order along a major street at least improves navigation. Others like Park, 5th and 7th should have ones too I think. Can't find what museum Museum of African Art is supposed to be though, if you look on google maps it's a big museum near Central Park it's not in Long Island City like the other one we have.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:23, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Why not create a list? List of buildings and structures on Broadway (Manhattan). New entries can be added to the template afterwards then.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:26, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Yeah I think a separate article written as fully as possible first and then we can use material to write a summary in the main article.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:39, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Emailed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:31, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, just reorganizing the 1893 Waldorf article into something which I think might work better for it. I've cocked up the history and probably removed some material in doing though so LOL! Tricky to decide what belongs in history or architecture, but you might restore the earlier part of the history and change it to background or something to explain Astor's building purposes etc. The real details on height etc belong in architecture I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:49, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

I think I've sorted out the background now but there'll still be some duplication further down needing sorting. I think it's a good idea to have sub sections on all the notable people with mini biographies.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:56, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

All yours for now! I ate pie and chips for dinner and feeling too tired and bloated now LOL! Yeah I think it'll look better in the current shape once fully researched and written, and then the main article early history will look more like a summary rather than a copy. There really ought to be PD material on the architecture if that lesser hotel we did last week has it! In the Morrison book some of the earlier pages are about the rooms of the 1893 hotel I think Check out pages 22-30s etc in here. I might see if I can get hold of that book as a lot of pages are missing from the preview which might be valuable, but last time I looked on amazon it was unavailable, Is it available in the US?.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:59, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

It was, with peas and gravy hehe, very British!! I think we could get away with quite a big gallery of room photos for the article you know, they have much encyclopedic value I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:05, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

You may like to contribute to this woman's article which I have substantially expanded.--Nvvchar. 10:36, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Would you like Asthana Vidushi nominated on DYK? You and Dr. Blofeld may like to expand this User:Nvvchar/sandbox/Sophia Duleep Singh interesting princess's biography further.--Nvvchar. 17:19, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
For your impressive work on the Waldorf Astoria (New York, 1893)!! You seem to have been enjoying yourself! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:42, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

You might want to revise "The plan of the combined Hotel Waldorf-Astoria indicates that the Waldorf was planned without any intention of adding the Astoria to it" though as the book I have indicate that Peacock Alley had been planned all along to connect them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:43, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Did you go through that Morrison book afterwards and add details on the old Waldorf hotel? Tomorrow I think I might write a summary of the original architecture in the main article, unless you want to? At the beginning of architecture a section on the old hotels first in a summary I was thinking. Wouldn't it be wort getting it to GA? Not too much needing doing now. I'll go through that Morrison book tomorrow then and then a summary can be written. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:14, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

I'll definitely be getting the current one to GA. About 90% done already I reckon. Possible to get the old one there too, I think we might need to find a bit more on its history and some details on things like restaurants and bars first though, and of course cleaning up the prose from the PD a bit more!.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:30, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

I've been bored with wikipedia in general the last few days! Funny isn't it how different things feel at times!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:38, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Can you find the specific sources where required for the Waldorf Hotel section of Waldorf–Astoria (New York, 1893)? It's just I suspect the Empire Room and Waldorf Restaurant were the same room, so need to know the sources where the info came from to merge if possible. Before I can complete the main Waldorf Astoria article the 1893 one needs to be done and dusted first really so I can ensure than my condensed summary of the architecture in the main article is comprehensive! There's a little bit of confusion over what belongs to what hotel and overlap with the joined hotel section, the ballroom was originally on the first floor of the Astoria Hotel I believe, it might need a bit of a restructure to work around it, but I think it's probably best as it is. Can you also add bio sections on John Jacob Astor IV and Lucius M. Boomer? I have some stuff on Boomer in my book which could be used for an article. Some of the other bios like Astor and the architect could use some reinforcement with other sources. Are the Manhattan and Martinique hotels really missing too? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:36, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Women writers

Hi Rosie. Just a word to let you know I've finally started on this with a List of Danish women writers (which of course still needs to be significantly expanded). I'll continue with the other Nordic countries, then see how much time I have left for the rest of Europe. Ultimately there could be a master List of European women writers. I've taken this approach as the Americans, Brits and other English-speakers are already quite well covered. I also hope to add a number of short biographies.--Ipigott (talk) 12:37, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Ipigott, thank you for the Danish list and I look forward to seeing the other lists you'll be creating. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:08, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Dictionary of National Biography/Missing women has been started, not sure if you know about it. Will get back to the hotel articles a bit later!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:10, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Can you merge back location in the 1893 article? A wee bit short I think for its own section!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:19, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Arno Schmidt (chef) may interest you.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:58, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Can you also mention the orchestra in the main article? Can you start Paris Ball, there's some initial info in the history of the main one from 1952 onwards. I have some additional details in my book which could be added, definitely notable!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:32, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

I meant mentioning the orchestra in the main Waldorf Astoria New York article. It seems to scare you that article for whatever reason haha. Thanks for starting the ball BTW.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:46, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

See, that's what I love the most about wikipedia, that you can create articles such as that and make the project that bit more special, digging up long forgotten things of the past with specialist information on them. Not to mention the many notable red links it creates which in turn must be started! Let me know when you think the 1893 article and the ball is comprehensive enough and I'll create some summary sections in the main article, unless you could do that? Wouldn't need much work as it's already written, just some good summary skills! A section on the ball with main article link can go under the restaurant section and then I can remove some of the detail from the history. The architecture section of the main Waldorf article needs a good chunky paragraph or two at the top summarising the old hotel building. That way both Waldorf's can be listed as our GAs once promoted! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:46, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Good job, hehe some detective work now needed on what replaced it up until 1924!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:47, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

What about between 1896 and 1924!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:21, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Was it The St. Regis Hotel from 1904? [1] Became tallest in New York at least. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:36, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Good stuff here on April in Paris Ball. I'll work it in later. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:13, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Test Kaffeeklatsch area for women-only

Since WikiProject Women as proposed at the IdeaLab may take some time to realize, and based on a discussion on the proposal's talk page, I have started a test Kaffeeklatsch area for women (cis, lesbian, transgender) only. If interested, your participation would be most welcome. Lightbreather (talk) 19:42, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Have begun on the 1980 Ritz book, first chapter on César Ritz. You might find more for him, there's some notable missing hotels in the article too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:44, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Ha you can get the book on Amazon for a penny here. I think the grantees paid about £13 for it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:35, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

This side of the pond, it was US$1.24. Lol! Bought it and I'll let you know when it arrives. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:59, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Cool! It's not as beautiful as the other book I have but contains a wealth of information. It's certainly worth getting for $1.24!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:50, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for improving John H. Dessauer to a personality, not only of great merits but one you would like to meet, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (12 May 2009, 3 February 2010)!

Three years ago, you were the first to receive the sapphire as a token of recognition, later called Precious, the PumpkinSky Prize, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:10, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Gerda Arendt. What a genuine act of kindness on your part. And I am humbled to know I was the first to receive it. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:53, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Just look at the list, sort by number. I listed the first recipients - before it got better organized - by the order I met them on Wikipedia, and PumpkinSky had to come even before those ;) - The list shows my battle, in the fight for "kindness, generosity, forgiveness and compassion", - I simply say precious. I confess that I thought of Dr. Blofeld first because he had been my greatest helper, but the first had to be a woman, of course. I wonder if the percentage of women in the list is higher than the average among users, - my way of kaffeeklatsch ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:14, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Congratulations

Rosiestep, congratulations on co-authoring yet another phenomenal Good Article. I always enjoy opportunities to work with you, and look forward to reviewing another of your outstanding articles in the near future. Great job! -- Caponer (talk) 09:37, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Well done! Well done We hope too! I think it's about time we did a GA for an LA article, it seems to suffer from a general lack of quality. I think we should aim to get a notable landmark up to GA. Any suggestions? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:50, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

What was that hotel you said about before? Palace Hotel, San Francisco I think would be worth it. How about Pier 39? I really think it's time we had a Californian GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:48, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

No big rush as I have Streep and the Ritz to be getting on with but I think it would be good to have one in mind. Whatever takes your fancy and would be enjoyable of course. I really do think it's time we did an LA one. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:10, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Ocle Pychard might interest you for DYK.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:06, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Does it have enough now for you to nom for DYK? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:43, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

I also started Claude Philippe and Alphonse Salamone as I'm planning on sending the Waldorf book back probably tomorrow. Can you find some more sources and the birth and death dates? Not to be confused with Alfonse P Salamone, also born 1919 but died 2003. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:53, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

New kitty every day

Stop changing it every day LOL!! A cat is for life!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey, amigo, the kitties come and go as they please! Lol!! What I really should do is start a subpage to include all the cats who've graced my userpage and talkpage. Probably a lot! Before I did the RfA thing in 2009, my co-sponsor encouraged me to remove the Lol Cat I had on my userpage, saying that some editors might oppose my run just because of a cat picture. I took her advise, but I have to say, I felt bad kowtowing over a cat. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:37, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey thanks for the DYK review. There is another languishing, I didn't create it, I nominated it for a real go-getter of a new user, SusunW: here. Question about the assessment page

Hello I am a student at American University and i am in a class about Wikipedia. I am planning on working on the Wikiproject for Women Writers and I was wondering why the assessment page seems to be relatively bare considering how many people are signed up as participants? This may be due to the fact that i am incredibly green when it comes to editing wikipedia pages.3143628a (talk) 00:28, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Uncatted women writer stubs

Hi Rosie. I've been doing some WPWW tagging of stubs in some of the subcats of Category:European writer stubs. I've found quite a few stubs that had no WPWW tag, and others that looked to be bot-tagged with WPWW. Is there a bot that tags new stubs in Category:Writer stubs, Category:Poet stubs, Category:Journalist stubs, etc, on a regular basis? INeverCry 02:51, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Rosie. My name is Alex and I'm an American University student taking a Wikipedia class. One of my classmates already contacted you, but I ended up being interested in the same project. I am planning to work on several articles using the list of articles needing clean up through the project page. Is this the correct way to go about this? Today after reading about Harper Lee planning to publish a new novel, I added a few sentences to the article. Would you be able to let me know how I did with my edits and if there are any ways I can improve? User talk:ahbeall — Preceding undated comment added 20:24, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

LA edit-a-thons on February 14, 17, and 21

Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March!

I hope to see you there! Calliopejen1 (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:58, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 1

Hi! Thank you for subscribing to the WikiProject X Newsletter. For our first issue...

Has WikiProject X changed the world yet? No.

We opened up shop last month and announced our existence to the world. Our first phase is the "research" phase, consisting mostly of reading and listening. We set up our landing page and started collecting stories. So far, 28 stories have been shared about WikiProjects, describing a variety of experiences across numerous WikiProjects. A recurring story involves a WikiProject that starts off strong but has trouble continuing to stay active. Most people describe using WikiProjects as a way to get feedback from other editors. Some quotes:

  • "Working on requested articles, utilising the reliable sources section, and having an active WikiProject to ask questions in really helped me learn how to edit Wikipedia and looking back I don't know how long I would have stayed editing without that project." – Sam Walton on WikiProject Video Games
  • "I believe that the main problem of the Wikiprojects is that they are complicated to use. There should be a a much simpler way to check what do do, what needs to be improved etc." – Tetra quark
  • "In the late 2000s, WikiProject Film tried to emulate WP:MILHIST in having coordinators and elections. Unfortunately, this was not sustainable and ultimately fell apart." – Erik

Of course, these are just anecdotes. While they demonstrate what is possible, they do not necessarily explain what is typical. We will be using this information in conjunction with a quantitative analysis of WikiProjects, as documented on Meta. Particularly, we are interested in the measurement of WikiProject activity as it relates to overall editing in that WikiProject's subject area.

We also have 50 people and projects signed up for pilot testing, which is an excellent start! (An important caveat: one person volunteering a WikiProject does not mean the WikiProject as a whole is interested; just that there is at least one person, which is a start.)

While carrying out our research, we are documenting the problems with WikiProjects and our ideas for making WikiProjects better. Some ideas include better integration of existing tools into WikiProjects, recommendations of WikiProjects for people to join, and improved coordination with Articles for Creation. These are just ideas that may or may not make it to the design phase; we will see. We are also working with WikiProject Council to improve the directory of WikiProjects, with the goal of a reliable, self-updating WikiProject directory. Stay tuned! If you have any ideas, you are welcome to leave a note on our talk page.

That's all for now. Thank you for subscribing!

How To Pick Up More Women ...

My proposed Wikimania talk "How To Pick Up More Women" is here. Ok when I hope you have stopped smiling (first time?) then you may realise that this is about what we have been doing for the last year and more. So I'm using women as the hook cos lots of people understand the issue. However I have a serious idea that what I'm trying to solve here is a problem of .... um ....Cultural Anthropology. So you might smile again. No rush, but if you (or anyone reading this) have some thoughts then Id be be very pleased to listen. Cheers RS Victuallers (talk) 20:41, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

@Victuallers: love the idea!! Let me give it some thought and I'll make some suggestions, but it won't be for a few days because of family commitments through the weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:51, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

@Rosiestep: Well you have tipped the balance Rosie. I have had some intakes of breath over my approach, but I'm pleased to see that you "get it". There is a discussion on my page which has some some good ideas. Are you hoping/intending to go to Wikimania. I have some family issues too. My partners birthday is this weekend). However this intended to create a longer term reaction. Hope to hear from you next week. I may copy your reply to my page ..... cheers Victuallers (talk) 10:32, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

@Victuallers: I really want to go and participate in Wikimania, but I can't justify paying for the travel. I haven't put in for a travel grant as I imagine there are a lot of editors who don't have a full-time job who would probably be considered more financially deserving (or am I suffering from imposter syndrome?). --Rosiestep (talk) 15:05, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)You're suffering from imposter syndrome. Put in for the damn grant, dearie! WMF is clear that they aren't considering financial need for these, and only about 1 in 10 applicants is going to get funding, so how hard can you get hurt jumping off a pancake? DO IT!!!! Montanabw(talk) 22:22, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

@Montanabw: I have jumped off the pancake, amiga, thanks to your nudge; sometimes, people just need to hear something like this from someone they respect. Now what about you... I think there's a waffle over there with your name on it... wink. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:46, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Thinking about it. Definitely thinking about it. Deadline approaching fast... Montanabw(talk) 23:59, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: @Montanabw: DO IT!!! Both of you!!! Now!!! :) Keilana|Parlez ici 04:43, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
@Keilana: woohoo, done! @Montanabw: well?? What an awesome reunion if we can pull it off! --Rosiestep (talk) 05:11, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

{{Template:Did you know nominations/Mehetabel Wesley Wright}}

Rosie - This is an important subject! You are the person. How much encouragement do you need? Let me add you name as co-presenter. We have I think worked closely with each other for long enough to know that we can make this work....... OK? We can skype when you are in principle committed. Victuallers (talk) 22:20, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
@Victuallers: Thanks for the nom and for expanding Mehetabel's article. Much of the content I put into the article is PD close-paraphrasing, and nothing wrong with that because of the attribution I provided, but there may not be enough new content to meet the +1500 char count. Let's see how it goes. As for your invitation to be a co-presenter, Roger, you had me at hello. :) We've worked together a lot over the last couple of years, and our editing style and views on issues appear be in sync. You've got a good idea, and you don't shy away from a good conversation. I couldn't be more pleased with the idea of co-presenting on this topic. So, yes, I'm principle committed. Now let's work on a project plan. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:52, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Brill Im rushing for work. Can you stand by to add your name (ie not today? but tomorrow?).... and copyedit the bit thats up there. I think we need to tell our bit of the world that we are doing this and hopefully they will sign up to attend the talk. That means that we may get funded. Meanwhile, I agree project plan and do it! Hopefully we will meet in Mexico and even better we might improve/solve??? the systemic bias problem. Victuallers (talk) 07:54, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm still rushing around as real life is busy at present. I see youve added your name (tick) and I have added a YouTube link just to show that I can present. However I'm aware that the choosing (for wiki-mania) will happen very soon. If you could find time to post the link onto pages where it may be of interest (as I did to you) then we may get more signups of people who are interested. Note: I don't think they have to be going to Mexico .... just that they would like to see the work/ presentation. Do you have some minutes to make this happen? On the subject of the presentation then I thought it might be useful to add some links to the work we/ et al have done. e.g. the new article list at WPWW and the new article/dyk list from WHM last year and the DYK WHM queue now. I hope to do some of this next week. Do add, delete or modify as you see fit in the wiki way. Cheers. Victuallers (talk) 17:56, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

You might want to watch the Kate Brown page. She is about to take over as governor of Oregon, after John Kitzhaber's resignation is final on the 18th. She is already that states Secretary of State, but when she becomes governor, there could be a flurry of edits. You never know how these things are going to play out. I know you are very involved in womens issues, so I wanted to give you a heads up here. Happy editing! :) Juneau Mike (talk) 16:11, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

  • Good luck to her in her new job. I pruned some content for BLP reasons--please see edit summaries for explanations. I think the article could do with some improvements, esp. in references. Oh, and looking over that "Oregon Secretary of State" section again, I think that needs pruning as well--unfortunately it looks a bit like the typical "here's all the good stuff done while person X was in office and we'll give them sole credit for it". I removed one section which was just totally wrong in tone.

Rosiestep, it only occurred to me the other day that you're an admin as well--I'm sorry I missed your RfA. Can I still congratulate you? :) Drmies (talk) 23:31, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

  • @Drmies: thanks for tidying up the article as it'll probably get a bit more traffic soon. Truth be told, I haven't looked at it yet as I've been working on another woman's bio and have to leave pretty quick for a family wedding. As for my RfA, you are so sweet to even mention that. Cheers, --Rosiestep (talk) 23:37, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
  • I hope there was lots of drinking and dancing, and that you enjoyed it. Another editor did some more work on that article. I was sitting home watching the SNL affair and translating boring articles on boring German genre painters--good thing Hafspajen is paying me handsomely. I'll get back to the list of women authors soon: will you please remind me exactly where that was? It'll save me from having to peruse my history. Drmies (talk) 04:36, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Also, FYI, Lesley Gore "It's My Party" has died. :( Juneau Mike (talk) 21:07, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
  • The banner: I had a go. I think (but I'm not certain) the font is Baskerville. Following the original Swedish layout, it reads "8 march" (looks unbalanced if a cap is used)- which is no good. Eight march where? Nice photo- of someone sticking a drill into a vaguely skull-like object. Looks like a trepanning gone wrong. "International Women's Day edit-a-thon"- looks unbalanced without a cap on "Edit-a-thon", and also looks like someone's missed the "g" off the end. The editing's no problem- I use Photoshop- but I don't know how to upload the file with the attribution to the original author. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 09:27, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes, sure. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:05, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

  • @Xanthomelanoussprog: It's getting really good! Two more tweaks, if you would please: (a) instead of International Women's Day 8th March, change to International Women's Day - 8 March; (b) can you make the font a point or two smaller in the top line so the last word doesn't go behind her hair? --Rosiestep (talk) 15:19, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

2015 Mount Carbon train derailment

Rosie, thank you for your feedback. *ALWAYS* appreciated. Today I have been working on the article: 2015 Mount Carbon train derailment, which happened in a state I once lived in, and still love. Most of my edits have been of the house keeping variety. I have noticed that when new articles come about, especially involving "current events", prose suffers, as does proper categorization, etc. I have been trying to help out in those areas, while leaving the heavy lifting for another day (letting other editors carry the load for now...) Let me know what you think of the article, and my (albeit somewhat limited, to date) involvement. Thanks!Juneau Mike (talk) 03:55, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

@Michaelh2001: Good edits on your part. I wasn't aware of the accideent, so thanks for the heads-up on it. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:05, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

To opt out of future mailings about SF meetups, please remove your name from this list.

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Thanks for Template:Did you know nominations/Anne Rudloe (you are priceless and precious) and for the 8 March reminder. In fact, I'm going to go see what my syllabus has for that day and how I can celebrate it in a lit class. Drmies (talk) 17:33, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

How to pick up more women? Seriously?

Why would you use such a title that is associated with PUA culture that is clearly misogynistic for a talk about women editors? Is this an attempt to be an attention-grabber? Because it only has bad associations for me. We want to engage women and encourage them to participate, not "pick them up". Liz Read! Talk! 22:47, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

  • Liz, thank you for reaching out to me. First, the title was not of my making; it was created by the proposal originator as an attention-grabber and it certainly grabbed my attention. That said, I believe with all my heart in the topic of increasing the participation of women editors, and increasing the number of articles about women, their works, their interests. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:00, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
For now, I've added a Footnote to the title at the proposal page. Maybe this suffices? @Victuallers:, please take a look. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:50, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Crisco 1492, The ed17, Keilana: I wasn't aware of your comments (and I'm seeing others elsewhere) regarding the title, and now that I am, I can see the importance of re-addressing the title with the proposer, i.e. the footnote I added on the proposal page doesn't cut it. Thank you for your feedback. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:49, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
  • I gave @Victuallers: similar feedback on the title at his talk page. I like the concept of the presentation, I worry that the double entendre could be taken wrong and I wasn't fond of the title, though I understand why it was chosen. I do think it's necessary to address the topic. Montanabw(talk) 04:55, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
  • I see that irony doesn't go down well with some of those concerned to restore women to their rightful place in science, technology, culture and Wikipedia. The Atlantic is wider than we Limies think. Still, if the campaigners are unhappy with the title, it would be better to change it. Perhaps something like "How to present and involve more women on Wikipedia"? Bmcln1 (talk) 08:36, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
How about "Widening Wikipedia's World of Women"?--Ipigott (talk) 09:19, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I like Ipigott's idea ... clever, catchy and makes the same point. Montanabw(talk) 22:12, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Be careful though with the use of the word "widening" now :-) Why not "Broadening Wikipedia's Coverage of Women", although I gather Ipigott's alliteration of the letter W was intentional for effect...♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:19, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
"Broad" is not OK and of course you know that ;-) . "Wide" - that OK, even if it characterizes my own backside! Montanabw(talk) 23:53, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Marta Lamas

I created an article for Marta Lamas today. Am working on a piece about Mexican feminism and it is virtually impossible to discuss the topic without her. BUT, my question is, I spent hours and hours inputting and translating just a tiny fraction of her articles. She is prolific. Has over 20 pages of works listed on Amazon. Is there a site which would more easily list them so that I do not have to individually list each article? Since you work on women writers, and speak Spanish, what's the best way to do it? List them all? Seems to be POV if we "select" which ones to include or not. HELP! SusunW (talk) 06:34, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

SusunW, you are doing an awesome job! So grateful for your presence on Wikipedia. To answer your questions: I use WorldCat to flesh out a writer's works, sorted by "Oldest First". I rarely include articles... stick with books unless the writer is known for articles. If there are more than X, and I have to draw the line somewhere, I'll include the ones that are mentioned in gbooks. Thanks to a suggestion from Gerda Arendt, I've been naming the header "Selected works". I rarely put in the effort to translate the title names. It is not customary to include a url in the "works" section; generally, if there's a url, the item would be in the "External links" section instead. Some other observations... Regarding header capitalization, they are generally in "sentence case" v. "title case" per MOS:HEAD, i.e. Journalistic Endeavors --> Journalistic endeavors. If it's a living person, so there's just a year of birth, add "born", i.e. (born 1947). I always check to see if there's an article about the person on another language Wikipedia, by googling something like Jane Doe wiki. In Marta's case, there is this. The foreign language article can be quite useful in providing good information (as well as misinformation, especially if there are no references!). The two language articles should be linked and there are a number of ways that can happen; WP:WD is a painfully long explanation, so I'll look for a shorter explanation. Hope this was helpful. Keep writing! :) --Rosiestep (talk) 14:53, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: Thanks! I'll try World Cat. I thought about NOT including the articles, but that is mainly what she is known for. Hard to argue that she is one of the most prolific feminist writers if I only show her books, because magazine work is her forte. She has founded 3 of them. Maybe in the name of brevity I only focus on the last 5 years? But then I miss things like the articles she wrote during the debates on legalizing abortion in Mexico City in 2007, or gender in 2009. Then of course one runs the risk of being questioned on POV (someone actually accused me of POV because I stated that a first marriage of Salvador Alvarado was reported by one source. To me that is not remotely saying I don't believe it. It is saying the opposite, that it is a definitely possibility but no corroborating data has been located. I am first and foremost a researcher. If I cannot back up things in more than one source, I rarely include it as there isn't weight there.) I did read the Wiki on Marta, wasn't very helpful as there were no sources. In fact, it makes a claim about a school she established in 2003 that I was unable to source, so I did not include it. I have been translating them because on another page was told that sources that were not in English should be marked as not in English and translated. Seemed obvious to me they weren't in English, but Wikiexpert I am not. Good to know I don't have to translate them all. SusunW (talk) 15:31, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
interwiki linking is easy: you go to the other article, click on the bottom left (unter languages or whatever that is called in the other language) and will be prompted to enter the 2-digit language code "en" and the article name - good to have that copied when going. Press "enter" - that's all! - In this case , I did it, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:30, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Woot! Just tried that on Salvador Alvarado and it automatically linked it to all 4 existing pages on him. Thanks for the new trick :) SusunW (talk) 18:57, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: Thanks for the DYK plug for her. I did as you suggested, labeled it Selected works and stopped after inputting 6 pages from Amazon and the 7 pages in World Cat. Would that I spoke enough Spanish to read some of these articles for the Mexican Feminism page I am working on. *sigh* Someday soon. SusunW (talk) 04:52, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Your messages about your submission for Wikimania

...are such a great idea. I liked it so much I repackaged it and did something similar for my presentation submission. I know it's CC BY-SA 3.0 and all, but I figured I'd just drop by and say thanks for putting that message together. Hope to see you there. I, JethroBT drop me a line 09:27, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Well, thank you, I JethroBT; I'm glad you liked the idea. And hope to see you there! --Rosiestep (talk) 14:14, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
  • @I JethroBT: I lurk on Rosie's page trying to learn stuff. I love the idea of your submission! I have to say that one of the most difficult parts of participation on Wikipedia is trying to find out what you need to know. For the most part, I find the help pages written in a language I do not understand, programming. (I should say here that I am not computer illiterate, I bought my first computer in 1979, an 8088, but I don't program, I use the computer as a tool to assist me in research and writing. How it does that, I could care less as long as it does it.) While the goal of the encyclopedia is to make non-POV information available, within its own pages, it is very definitively programming-centric. Without people like Rosie and Montanabw to help, my frustration levels would be through the roof. Many times in the short time I have been editing, I thought that continuing was not worth it, as it seems there is no way one can ever amass the skill necessary to negotiate the pages and do what you really came here to do, which is simply to write an article. Often, I do not ask for help, simply because I am pushing myself to learn and do not want to be a nuance. I have not encountered the sexist bias that many complain about here, but certainly programming bias on an almost daily basis. Would that the system were more user friendly. Would that there was someplace to ask questions without being told "everyone knows that." All that being said, a mentoring program is definitely needed, IMHO. When I started, I tried to find one on the previous mentoring pages. Applied with about 6 people and then I gave up and just dove in. SusunW (talk) 15:12, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: Thanks! I really appreciate hearing that. One thing I want to clarify is that the idea for a mentorship space that matches people together has been around for a bit, well before I was ever involved (see this IdeaLab page and this grant proposal). I agree there is a syntax hurdle that people have to engage with before they are able to do a lot of meaningful editing here— learning that requires time that most people do not have to give, and there is nothing wrong with that. Some things, like the notifications system have made the interface slightly less programming-centric. Have you had a chance to check out Flow yet? There are still concerns with it, but I think it has potential to further reduce that hurdle as well in communications, and we will be using it in The Co-op as a test run to see whether it's useful (or not). In any case, I agree that there is this feeling of "everyone knows that" for newer editors, I suspect editors feel like they have to figure stuff out on their own. There's nothing wrong with figuring it out yourself, of course, but neither is wanting to talk to a person who can help, and we just wanted to make that process easier. I, JethroBT drop me a line 03:56, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
  • @I JethroBT: Thanks for providing a link that sort of explains what "flow" is. I have had 3 people mention it to me in the last week, none of whom said what it actually was. I find it not very user friendly. Not being able to reply a specific person is aggravating, to say the least. Why I cannot just hit a button and answer is unfathomable. Why I should have to...what did he say, go outside of Flow to respond directly...is truly baffling. As it stands now, I don't get notified on several of the pages that I am "watching", when someone responds to something I pinged them on etc. That in itself is a totally different problem. I do not want it to appear that I am simply complaining. There is a lot that is phenomenal about Wikipedia. But the programmer-centric nature of it, makes it truly difficult for newcomers to edit and I'd venture to say to stay with editing over the long term, IMO. I saw some stats within the last week that said most people who sign up either don't edit or make edits to a single article and no further contributions. The speculation was that they were interested in only that topic. My answer would be completely different. SusunW (talk) 05:25, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Flow sucks. What the programmers don't understand is that we non-programmers are really smart people and we can learn ANYTHING -- but we find it challenging to keep having to learn yet more new stuff (Windows 8, anyone?) that isn't an actual improvement. Their attempts to make stuff "better" often fixes what ain't broken and just gives us all stuff to relearn. And one person's "easier" is often my "WTF do these stupid icons mean?" LOL! Montanabw(talk) 04:06, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
+1 👍 Like and LOL with you! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:42, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
+2 👍 Like @Montanabw: o.O. And one other thing I haven't yet touched on @I JethroBT:- notability. Hit the "random article" button sometime. You will find all sorts of topics come up with 1 sentence, but a whole lot of sports figures or obscure popular cultural figures with 1 or 2 sentences. How do these meet notability, but articles on women's "notability" are questioned if they weren't the first at something or if they don't have a huge body of work? I have seen more than one article on females from the Caribbean "marked for deletion" because like a recent article on a writer "publishing only 1 book" was not notable. (I want to scream do you have any idea how expensive internet access is in the Caribbean? Any clue how few of their resources are on line? That it was notable enough to be published in a mainstream paper in the US or Europe speaks to their cultural contribution. But, I don't.) I will do just about anything to avoid controversy on here. Not that I don't have the strength of my convictions, but I pick my battles. This is not real life. Whether an article is included or not, is ultimately someone's POV, regardless of what the rules say. The "notability" issue needs to be addressed in both the mentoring sphere and the discussion on women, IMO. SusunW (talk) 20:21, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
👍 Like @SusunW! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:31, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: Yeah, I get what you mean about picking your battles. It's an important skill to have here (as it is off-wiki). If I had a good answer about how to help folks interpret complex things like notability more consistently across articles, I would offer it, but I don't have one, and it is absolutely frustrating. FT article on Wikipedia

Today's (27 February) Financial Times has an interesting article by Emma Jacobs titled "Editors-for-hire on Wikipedia" (print edition) or "Business Life: Wikipedia’s editors-for-hire" (digital edition) discussing reactions from editors who have been paid for their work. In connection with your Wikimedia presentation, comments from Michael Wood seem particularly pertinent: "The 38-year-old had edited in his spare time without remuneration for eight years. In this time, he has watched Wikipedia, he says, move from being an open community to what he sees as a small band of editors guarding the castle. (The number of editors on the English-language Wikipedia has been in decline since 2007.) 'People try to write [entries] themselves and get frustrated by the volunteer editors. There's lots of good editors on Wikipedia but there's a bad group ... They make it hard.' He also claims that high-handed self-appointed guardians of Wikipedia are the reason that so many women and ethnic minorities are deterred from editing. A report by the Wikimedia foundation in 2011 found only 9 per cent of editors are women. The foundation is making efforts to encourage more women editors as well as those from ethnic minorities, through edit-a-thons (events in which people work together in person to build content)."--Ipigott (talk) 09:00, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

How to

I saw this elsewhere on WP. As I occasionally ramble about on other talk pages, my other half is big on social media and creating a web presence, but she's not keen on Wikipedia, although she has been to meetups and found the people there to be pleasant. Recently in an email conversation to a prominent admin, she said that some UI changes like ping and the article wizard were nice but also mentioned "Unfortunately, the sort of people editing the site haven't changed and it feels too hostile for me, so I generally avoid it." I'm not sure what she could contribute to your presentation, if anything, but her opinion might be worth grabbing. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:16, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Ritchie333, and glad you stopped by. We really should work on some article together as I've seen you around, but I don't think we've every actually collaborated on something. Right? I'd be very happy to hear from Rhondamerrick; please let her know that. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 03:34, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I'll pass the news on. I see you know a number of my chums (quick wave to Blofeld - yes, I got your email, but my mailbox is an official disaster area as I think I said before!) In terms of articles, there are many things that need work, I'm just not sure what your area of interest or expertise is. I rescued Jennifer Moon, a conceptual artist and UCLA graduate from speedy deletion last week, then having taken Blackwall Tunnel and Dartford Crossing to GA, I'd like to finish off the set with Woolwich Ferry. Oh, also Ika Hügel-Marshall could do with a GA review. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:54, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Ritchie333:, As for my interests, well, safe to say they are diverse, but I have a preference for geography, structures, biographies, and old stuff. It's coming up on Women's History Month, so I'll be concentrating on women's bios for the next few weeks. I've tagged Ika for the GA review. If you see something that I'm working on which interests you, just jump in! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Hello Rosie, Ritchie asked me to stop by and share my thoughts about Wikipedia. I rarely come here because I prefer to spend my cyber-life in places that are welcoming, emotionally supportive and generally a positive environment. To me, Wikipedia feels vaguely threatening and emotionally toxic. From the swift and harsh penalties meted out to anyone that doesn't follow the precise code of the Wiki community to the infamously fierce and prolonged revert wars to the unwarranted arrogance and often ignorance of people clicking the speedy deletion link on grounds of notability or lack thereof. I think MusicBrainz.org and ImDB.com have a safety net system that's helpful rather than hurtful to new users. However, I've attended a couple of Wikipedia events and found the experience enjoyable and relaxed. Sometimes the nicest people will get in their cars and become road rage monsters. Perhaps this is what happens to some people that contribute to the Wiki community. I'm comfortable engaging with people on several social media sites as well as working from the Wordpress dashboard for several websites that I created and maintain, but I would not have been able to post this response if Ritchie had not been next to me to explain how to use this page.
Lastly, I find some of the restrictions unfair to non-technical minded people of limited means that may have something to share but are unable to climb the steep learning curve just to use the site at all. Non-technical people that are wealthy can and do hire other people to sort their Wikipedia needs. This may be an outside agency or employee of the company. For instance, I wrote a television series for children called The Brilliant Book, it's broadcast nationally every week in England, but internationally on-demand channels. It was created to entertain and educate, especially people that struggle to understand non-verbal communication and to teach coping skills. Someone listed the show, but there are details about the episodes and links to all sorts of useful things that I would love to augment the article, but Ritchie says that's against the community rules, so I've not touched it. Another restriction is the rule against hiring and editor. There is a difference between hiring someone to do one's PR and hiring someone to ensure everything is formatted correctly as Amazon Kindle editors do. From my point of view, it's an emotionally harsh environment, with a steep learning curve, far too technical and no real sense of community. I do have some ideas on how these issues might be addressed:
1. Speedy Deletion - Should only be available to Administrators, everyone else can SUGGEST an article for deletion, but that suggestion does NOT immediately show up on the page.
2. Notability - Make the rules crystal and universal. Quantify how many newspaper articles or magazine write-up's... make a list of acceptable publications that can be augmented by request.
3. Revert Wars - Get rid of the capability for that to physically happen.
4. Editors - Make it possible for people to find and hire editors that meet a minimum standard of competence on this site for a small fee. That way, Wikipedia could function much like Amazon Kindle, eBay or airBnB in accepting and disbursing the fee after all parties are happy. If the article is rejected by the community then the person gets their deposit back with no nasty red sign on the top of their page calling them spammers or not important enough to be here. As long as the process is transparent and completely fair, then it should work FAR better than the sink or swim policy in place now and Wiki would create a new income stream.
I think some of the Cultural Anthropology issues are due to the infrastructure of the Wikipedia culture. If you want to progress from people fascinated with porno and anime, then you need to make a wider range of people feel welcome here.
That's my honest thoughts. Good luck in trying to change things for the better. Rhonda Rhondamerrick (talk) 18:53, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rhondamerrick: thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Not only am I reading this, but so are my "talk page stalkers" ("viewers"). You mention notability and I want you to know I'm working on that one, a lot, as it relates to women's biographies, where there are real challenges in finding sources, especially in foreign languages. Hiring editors for pay is generally frowned upon, though I think it occurs quite regularly behind closed doors. As for trying to change things for the better, I think a lot of us try to do our part, but it's hard to say who notices it. Here's hoping that readers notice and care. Again, thank you for your thoughts, and please stop by any time. (cc: Ritchie333) Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 21:21, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
👍 Like this very much to both of you. Not sure about paying editors to work on here but the rest of @Rhondamerrick:'s comments I mostly agree with. Hadn't even touched on the foreign language issue in women's notability, but the 3rd world issue is huge. A lot of their information comes from blogs, which are not necessarily considered "reliable." Working in human rights issues in the Caribbean, I know how hard we strive to get mainstream press. "Small countries, small audiences" is the mindset, so to get their accomplishments known, blogs, social media, etc. are the most common means of getting the stories out and hoping that the press will pick up on it. The Caribbean gets lost in data on Latin America and don't even get me started on women in Africa. SusunW (talk) 21:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: I've had a look around here and you've cultivated a real sense of community Rosie. Maybe I'll be one of those "talk page stalkers"... like the women from the Golden Needle Sewing School who congregated to learn and share knowledge cloistered from a hostile world... or the ladies who worked the back street bakeries making "Women's bread" in Kabul. I'm not interested in winning arguments or getting involved in any off-stage dramas. But I'm very interested in reading and sharing stories about the world we live in. I'll keep on eye on things around here. It's not just women that are overlooked. My first article on Wikipedia was about my uncle, a Jazz/Blues musician who was educated and thrived as a musician in the segregated south. The entire support system for black musicians is disappearing from history and their music formed the very roots of popular music, including rock and roll. I would be interested in helping out with a project like that @SusunW: Rhondamerrick (talk) 22:29, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Rhondamerrick: Your words are very kind, and, as I'm not having a very good day, they arrived serendipitously at the right moment. Like you, I'm not interested in winning arguments or getting involved in drama. I read, write, and share stories/articles on Wikipedia because I love doing so, and I've been doing just that for almost 8 years. I hope we can work together on some article, and it doesn't have to be a biography. I have lots of other interests, and I bet you do, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:09, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

2015 Mount Carbon train derailment

Just wanted to bring this revert of mine [3] to your attention. An editor removed most of the content from the article, and ALL references. I did the revert, but not sure how to deal with the editor. The sparse info on his page suggests he will not be neutral on these issues. Thanks for any help/feedback.Juneau Mike (talk) 15:19, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Michaelh2001, I'll take a look at this today. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Reference works on women's biographies

I know that there is going to be some sort of effort for March for improving content related to women. And I have to think that there is more than sufficient cause for such work, because that content, unfortunately like several other topic areas around here, is in dire need of development. And, lazy bastard that I am, I tend to doubt that I myself will be likely to be doing much directly regarding that, given a few other things I am actively trying to do here at wikipedia and over at wikisource. Anyway, I did find a few highly regarded reference works relating to women in general, although at least a few include some biographies of males, and have started a section over at Bibliography of encyclopedias: general biographies#Women for those works. I expect there are more, but those are all those on the Guide to Reference website with separate entries. That will include some material on "women's studies" type works and on other topics as well, but those are in different sections of that website and I haven't gotten to all of them yet, but some are listed somewhere (I forget exactly where right now), in one of the bibliography of encyclopedias pages. Adding a lot of other works from that guide is one of the things I will be working on. Some of them appear from that source to be available online, and some others might be as well. Anyway, the information might be useful. John Carter (talk) 19:36, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Great job on the bibliographies John Carter!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:37, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. John Carter (talk) 19:39, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Can you aim to split some of the big sections like Law and politics and Science into articles of their own though? I just did literature but broke some of the references, so it's best that you do it I think! Also if you can it would be great for some of those without isbn numbers if you could find the entries in google book and paste into ref maker here I think it's quite important that there is an external link, whether it's just isbn or link to google books for readers to instantly access the book and purchase it etc.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:53, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@John Carter: this is a really good bib list. I'm going to link it up with the WP:WikiWomen's History Month page. Thanks, John. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:05, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld: Right now I am still only going through the entries alphabetically by list, and I've only gotten so far as the "Biography" list, with about 50 more to go. Admittedly, though, it appears that about 1/3 of the total number of works listed are included in that section. As I get to the later lists alphabetically, and have a better idea how they "break up" the other sections, I will have a better idea as to how to spinout the sections in accord with the sources. Thank you, Gerda Arendt, Antidiskriminator, Ipigott, Bmcln1, SusunW! --Rosiestep (talk) 04:23, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Antidiskriminator, Crisco 1492, Gerda Arendt, Ipigott, Krenakarore, Netha Hussain, Nvvchar, SusunW, Thelmadatter, and everyone else who is reading this. Victuallers and I are looking for foreign language alternate titles ("subtitles") for our proposed Wikimania talk, the scope of which is increasing the number and quality of women's biographies on all language Wikipedias. As I know you are proficient in one or more languages other than English, I'm hopeful you will offer a foreign language suggestion or two. Thank you in advance. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:54, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Moving on

To Ellin Beltz, INeverCry, Calliopejen1, SlimVirgin, Montanabw, FloNight, and others: thank you for the feedback you've given thus far on the Wikimania proposal's submission page, its talkpage, etc. We asked for your feedback and you gave it. Apologies for being off-putting to some, so we changed the title, clarified the scope, etc. (cc: Victuallers) --Rosiestep (talk) 04:53, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

No worries, Rosie, it wasn't your title originally anyway and you did a great job of supporting Victuallers, who does have a good idea for a presentation. I just hope the feedback makes it better and wish you tremendous success! Montanabw(talk) 06:06, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Montanabw, thanks. And yes, Victuallers and I support each other, and he is the one who came up with a good idea for a presentation. We hope the community continues to provide feedback on the proposal especially the new "Challenges" and "Questions" sections. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:03, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi Rosiestep: Nice to know you've decided to "move on". I'm not willing to say "oh gee, poor you, it was the guy's idea" because I saw how you defended it. At first you were all giddy about how much attention you were getting - never mind what your title really means.
I don't see your name as a recent contributor to the historical page about how to "pick up more women". Perhaps you are unaware of the usage - to the present day - of the of kidnapping women and girls for the purposes of sex, permanent relocation and/or slavery. I cannot imagine anyone in today's society being ignorant of the huge crimes being perpetrated by men against women around the world, but as you're claiming to be clueless, please see the articles: rape, ISIL and Boko Haram at a minimum.
A traditional pick up.
I continue to be utterly appalled that anyone - including you and/or your proposed cohost - thought this was in any way, shape or form amusing, desirable or a good reflection on the Wiki family of projects. That the "joke" was considered for even 5 seconds - let alone entered as a talk title is utterly appalling. Imagine the headlines if your original title had been accepted:
  • "Mexico City Wikimania spotlights juvenile male bias"
  • "Conference participants urged to pick up more women"
  • "Wikimania - Let's bag more babes!"
  • "WikiMales clueless on dating, A.D. doesn't mean after dinner "
  • "Chauvenism reigns: Wikipedians encourage the little ladies to get involved"
  • "Wikiprojects - the newest social media: How to pick up more women discussed at conference"
This pickup led to Lucretia's suicide.
The negative fallout on the project and against every member of the Wiki community would be instant.
I don't think - even after withdrawing your initial title - that you understand the scope and depth of the insult and/or of your problem. I saw the anonymous IP comment on the proposal discussion - and I couldn't agree with her more. I see on another talk page that you are considering renaming the page to hide the controversy. So repaint the kitchen because you can't stand the heat, or what?
FYI, I am female. I have written articles about women both for Wiki and elsewhere. I've had Wiki-DYKs on articles about women. I haven't written as many articles you. None of the foregoing would or has given me - or you - the right to insult the very people claimed to be seeking. If that title had been the title of a presentation at my job, the presenter would have been slapped with multiple hostile work environment complaints - and, if they were employed when they gave the talk, likely they'd be unemployed after.
In case no one has ever explained it to you in plain English before - rape jokes aren't funny - at work, at home or at play, particularly not from someone claiming to be committed to women's issues. If I had time to waste, I'd review every one of your articles for gender bias since you are obviously utterly tone deaf on equality issues.
I don't care if you felt pressured into this by your partner and are now taking it on the chops for his idea. What does that say about your enabling behavior and about your personal integrity?
I see from your comments on the discussion page that you wanted attention. You certainly got it. It will be a very long time before I see your name on the project without a curled lip, an extreme sense of disappointment and a muttered, "Oh ... not her again". Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:03, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I am flabbergasted that anyone would question my "personal integrity". Question the proposal's title, question the pun, question the scope, but attack my integrity? Yes, it feels like an attack. You can say that was not your intent, but I will say, that is how it feels. So do I misunderstand you? Maybe. And if I misunderstand you, do you think -- just maybe -- you misunderstand me or that you assume too much? If you knew me... if you knew how much effort I have put into Wikipedia in general and the content gender gap in particular... if you knew I pay my way to attend gender gap edit-a-thons in other states... and if you assumed good faith about my point of view regarding the proposal title, this would be a different conversation, one laced with kindness. Generally, I avoid the spotlight, I avoid drama, I concentrate on article work. But my son tells me, "Mom, you can't write all the articles yourself". So I was elated when I learned that another editor wanted to shine a spotlight on content gender gap at Wikimania and after a bit, I felt it was time to step up to the plate, and actually talk about content gender gap instead of just working on it. I feel no shame, Ellin Beltz, in telling you that you have put me into tears -- not because of "poor little me" -- but because I'm a real person, I am a volunteer, I am a feminist, I am a granddaughter of a feminist, I am a grandmother of a granddaughter, I deeply care about women, and I don't deserve this. Of course, that's my opinion; you are entitled to yours. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:34, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I read with alarm the words written by Ellin Beltz. Attack the project but not the person. Personifying a struggle defeats it from the beginning. There is a huge difference in erring by intent and erring unintentionally. Neither Rosiestep nor Victualizers intended to cause harm. The same cannot be said of this very personal attack, which to my eyes will do more to damage improving womens coverage. No one wants to collaborate if they will be subjected to personal vitriol. I am truly sorry that this worthy project is coming to this end. SusunW (talk) 18:53, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Blofeld

Can you ask your friend not to post his shit on Ellin Beltz's talk? Thanks. INeverCry 06:18, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

@INeverCry: Excuse me?? If Rosie hadn't have stated that she was upset on the talk page with Ellin's posts I'd probably have not said anything. It came across to me as bullying INeverCry. Somebody sitting behind a screen and spouting hatred at somebody and accusing her of being responsible for degrading women. I'm not going to put up with that sort of abuse, and you ought to be ashamed of yourself for thinking what I said wasn't appropriate.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:17, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

INeverCry, no. And I find it alarming that you would support an editor (Ellin Beltz) who would leave a bullying post on another editor's (mine, this time) talkpage in an attempt to humiliate them and to attack their personal integrity. And that is precisely what EB did, INeverCry. You say you "hold me in high regard" and that you're "sorry to be part of anything that's upsetting... to other women"[4]. Really? I didn't ask you, or Dr. Blofeld, or anyone to come to my support or defense over this post by EB on my talkpage. I replied to EB and I archived, and I moved on. I suggest that you move on as well. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:23, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
You suggest I move on, and that's cool with me, but it's up to Blofeld really. He leaves Ellin alone, it's all good. It's only fair that everyone walks away from the situation and puts it behind them. INeverCry 01:16, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

You are an inspiration!

Dear Rosie, I was very inspired by your Wikimania proposal and also by the article about you in Huffington Post. I'm aware that most Wikipedia editors are male, but you expressed the issue of systemic bias so cogently that I was inspired to do some (small) something about it. Last night I wrote an article about a woman for our March DYK women's line-up. I encouraged a female friend and fellow writer to start writing for Wikipedia, and I also changed my Preferences to indicate that I am a "she". Thank you for being an inspiration! Best of luck with your Wikimania presentation. Yoninah (talk) 11:00, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Hey @Mindy Dirt: I added a few cats to Molly's article, but it's not quite long enough yet, and I think it could use other reliable source(s), i.e. maybe there's something regarding her cooking career? I googled her as I had hoped to expand the article instead of suggesting that you do so, but couldn't find anything myself. Just ping me if you want me to take another look at it. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:14, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

So cool to hear such nice things from you, Yoninah and Mindy Dirt! It gets clearer and clearer to me that one person can make a difference on Wikipedia; who knew? (lol) I'll look at both of your articles as soon as I can and see if they can get nominated at DYK if they meet the DYK requirements. Please stay in touch!! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:30, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I never knew that Yoninah!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:58, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

It's funny how many editors think I'm male. (Maybe it's because they are?) Yoninah (talk) 00:43, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
You're probably right. I thought you were a woman because of the "ah" ending in your username (i.e. a relatively common ending in a Hebrew woman's name). --Rosiestep (talk) 00:52, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
If the name isn't so obviously female in English I think most of us by default assume the editor to be male. That really does need to change I think, even though in my editing groups there seems to be no shortage of women!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:00, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Which is why I chose my username...to mess with people! LOL! But seriously, I also chose it as part of a "street safe" approach to the internet that I established long ago - to avoid potential harassment or differential treatment based on an assumption that I was a woman. I don't know if it's the username or not, but I will say that I haven't had much trouble with gender-based issues on WP, trolls a-plenty, but no one has ever attacked me for being female (other than some extremely minor stuff that others jumped on immediately). Montanabw(talk) 00:00, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "Butch Travers" or "Chuck Connors" though hehe!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:38, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

This seems a good enough place to put this as cool people seem to hang out here ;-) ... having cleaned up a number of serious BLP violations on Katie Hopkins, I am in half a mind to go the whole hog and improve it to GA status. I feel though that I should say that I find the woman to be utterly odious and repulsive, with a track record and reputation of being offensive for the sake of it, (example) and my motivation to improve the article is more out of a desire to be able to present a well-written, balanced and neutral account without the hyperbole and drama that accompanies just about every news piece relating to her, just like Nick Griffin's article. However, I think putting her as a DYK for part of International Women's Day would be an extremely ill-judged move that many people would find offensive. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:34, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ritchie333, thanks for stopping by. I don't know of KH -- probably because I'm on the other side of the pond. Do you think the article is too polarizing to be seen at DYK in general, or for IWD in particular? As for improving any article to GA, go go go for it. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:26, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
I think KH is only famous in Britain and nowhere else, but she features in the tabloid press regularly and a straw poll of the office earlier today suggests everyone here has heard of her. I'm doing a serious sweep through the article now, but unfortunately many of the citations are web links from 2007-2009 and they have rotted away. As for IWD, I'm not sure a typical woman reader would find her to be a good role model (Michelle Mone said Hopkins was a bad influence on prime-time national television) but I don't think any other Brits except Blofeld are regulars here to pass comment. Hi Rosie. User:Ramblersen tells me he is upset that his new article Julie Fagerholt has been deleted at very short notice. He usually produces very good work and I am sure he would not have started this article if it had not been worthwhile. It seems very strange to me that an article about a women should be deleted on the very first day of Women's History Month. Can you look into it?--Ipigott (talk) 07:15, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Ipigott, thank you for reaching out to me regarding this BLP. Ramblersen, I am sorry you had to go through this deletion (A7: "Article about a real person, which does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject"). I can imagine it's frustrating, and I think it's rough that it occurred on the first day of Women's History Month. I've pasted the deleted article here, minus some of the formatting for headers, cats, etc. If the refs could be augmented, and if the content could be expanded, I'd be happy to override the delete and restore the article. Does this seem reasonable? I did some googling; perhaps these links would be useful: cover.dk, boligmagasinet.dk, and/or copenhagenfashionfestival.com? I'd recommend pasting this article into your sandbox, and just ping me when you'd like me to look at it again. Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:00, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Julie Fagerholt (17 April 1968) is a Copenhagen-based Danish fashion designer and founder of the brand Heartmade.

Biography Julie Fagerholt grew up in Skovshoved north of Copenhagen, the daughter of Ninja Tholstrup Bramsen, a child psychologist, and Nils Fagerholt, an architect and a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.[1] She completed her education at the Danish Design School in 1993. In 1998, she set up her company Heartmade in a courtyard on Pilestræde in Copenhagen. Originally she focused on haute couture but since 2000 the brand has also produced prét-à-porter collections.[2] The company has a flagship store at Pilestræde 45 in Copenhagen.

2015 Galena train derailment

This page is just getting started: 2015 Galena train derailment. Thought it might interest you. I am going to collaborate with another editor on it. This has been a busy year for rail accidents. The category:railway accidents in 2014 has less than 15 articles. In 2015, there have already been 6. Anyway, if this interests you, enjoy! :) Juneau Mike (talk) 00:45, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Women's Wikipedia Edit-a-thon San Francisco 2015

Thank you so much for helping to organize one of the best edit-a-thons I have ever attended. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:02, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

You certainly all look busy! Which one are you Cullen328 or are you the one who took the photo hehe! Who is the one with the yellow jacket on the chair? Is she really editing wikipedia? Her screen looks green to me. If that's a customised screen I want it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:37, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Well, what an honor to get pinged by a doctor, and a highly productive doctor at that. No, I am the fellow behind the smart phone camera, not in front. The one in the striped blouse and the yellow jacket on the chair is Wikimedia Foundation staffer Rachel.dicerbo, who helped organize the event. To her left in the photo is a lady with a sweater of many colors. That is my dear wife, ChesPal, my partner in everything for a third of a century. I call her Debra and you can too. Perhaps you recognize our mutual friend Rosiestep? Please buy a score card for other identifications. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:37, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

@Cullen328: thank you for attending and for taking photos to capture the day. I appreciate that. It really was a nice edit-a-thon, with a good mix of seasoned editors and new ones. We worked on a lot of articles, and we had fun. Always great to see you and Debra. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 01:53, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Thought you, Ipigott and talk page stalkers would be interested!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:32, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I fully support this initiative but think it's a pity it's restricted to works in English. I realize that (perhaps apart from some interest in Spanish) there is not much general interest in non-English-language works in the United States but if you take our world-wide English-wiki community, there are enormous numbers of contributors and readers who are fluent in a host of other languages. Maybe someday we can engineer some kind of extension. In the meantime, I am trying to increase interest in non-native-English women writers, especially in Europe and Latin America. Recent additions have been included in the new articles at Women writers.--Ipigott (talk) 14:52, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Good link! I was aware of it but maybe some PS weren't. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:37, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

This is REALLY fascinating. We should write up Maria Leer (and maybe Stoffel Mulder) and get a triple/quadruple DYK, with your Louise Sophie Blussé in it. Drmies (talk) 15:23, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Drmies, I agree, REALLY fascinating! I created Maria's article, and I see you created ZN. As for Stoffel, everything is in Dutch, which is a real stretch for me; do you want to take it on? --Rosiestep (talk) 03:51, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Sure thing. There's sourcing available; first, though, I have to clean up the article for the sect. I suppose the "communist" reference was in the Dutch article? It's probably too early in the 19th century for that term, but we'll see. Thanks Rosiestep, Drmies (talk) 03:55, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Drmies, yes, it was a translation from the Dutch article, but there's also in an English language ref. I'm ok with rewording it, though, if it doesn't fit within the context of the article. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:43, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Eeks, can you look into this? I just realised that google deceived me, my place description is actually the one in Oakland, but the photos and Irataba are in San Francisco! Not picking up a road of that name in SF itself.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:03, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Seem to have found it now and corrected, but still needs expansion [5] :-) In the commons search for Whittier Mansion, some nice interior images yet it's missing! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:32, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

rachel (talk) 17:25, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Did you mention to Rachel Rosie my ideas for motivating editors with amazon vouchers as prizes in a monthly contest for best articles? I was thinking of making a proposal but am unlikely to approach the main foundation. WMUK might be interested. I really think if we're going to attract a lot of new editors, including women, we have to start giving back to the community and offering something to bait people's interest. I think you have to look at why they'd want to edit wikipedia..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:02, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

2015 Halifax train crash, BlP concerns

I added information about the truck drivers traffic record to the 2015 Halifax train crash article. I'm wondering if you could take a look, and perhaps play devils advocate regarding neutral point of view, and biographies of living persons policies - and perhaps make changes, or recommend them. I added the info (and kept some other info out) because:

  • When there is a significant accident, I believe the driving history of one of the significant participants is relevant.
  • I kept the drivers felony criminal history OUT, even though it is listed in the same references, because none of his record has had anything to do with his driving (with the exception of him facing a criminal charge over an overweight load)
  • I have tried to include positive information as well, to provide balance.
  • I have not found any information on the train engineers driving history, or his record with Amtrak to include. It wasn't my intent to "stick it to the truck driver", and give the engineer a pass.

Let me know what you think. I'm trying to include all relevant information here, while remaining neutral. Thanks! Juneau Mike (talk) 18:17, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi Mike, I'm thinking it's a good article. These 2 sentences may not be necessary: "Black was arrested in Illinois in December 2012, charged with exceeding the vehicle weight limit on the truck he was driving. He was released on bail, but but did not appear in court on the charge the following month." --Rosiestep (talk) 22:40, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

Aaron Schock

We might want to watch the US Congressman Aaron Schock page. Today, in the section, "Controversies", I saw this: "In March of 2015 new allegations surfaced saying 33-year-old Schock broke House rules when he failed to disclose that he accepted money from an outside group to cover the cost of bringing a male “companion” on an exotic all-expenses-paid trip to India." There was a reference given, to what in my experience is a gossip site.

I changed it to this, and included 2 references: "In March of 2015 new allegations surfaced saying Schock broke House rules when he failed to disclose that he accepted money from an outside group, the Global Poverty Project, to cover the cost of bringing a photographer on an all-expenses-paid trip to New Delhi, India, during a meeting Schock had with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, discussing Indian sanitation and access to clean water."

Now as a gay Wikipedian, the first version made me smile, but it... ummm... lacked a certain encyclopedic quality to say least. However, there was a little bit of truth to the original posting, which I hope I have salvaged, while removing the nonsense. But allegations and innuendo involving Schock seems to be growing exponentially, and I'm letting you know because it deserves a watchful eye. Not requesting help here, except to help me watch the page. Thanks! Juneau Mike (talk) 07:46, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Mike, you did the right thing. To me, the litmus test is: if someone were reading the article in 50 years, would they think it belonged in a newspaper or an encyclopedia. It was the former; you changed it to the latter. I have watchlisted it. Looking at the talkpage, I see that the article has been protected previously, so there are probably other eyes on it. If either of us notice any drama, let's document it on the talkpage. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:49, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Wadewitz memorial edit-a-thon (3/18), Redondo Loves Wikipedia (3/28)

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has two events in this second half of March -- please consider attending!

First, there is a memorial edit-a-thon in honor of the prolific LA Wikipedian Adrianne Wadewitz, which is being held downtown on March 18 (tomorrow!) from noon to 8pm as a part of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies' annual conference. Please drop by to contribute your own work or teach other users how to write for Wikipedia.

Second, there will be an event at the Redondo Beach Public Library (following up on last month's session), in collaboration with the Redondo Beach Historical Society. Please join us from 10am to noon on Saturday, March 28 at the main branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library!

I hope to see you there! Calliopejen1 (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:39, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Join our Facebook group here! To opt out of future mailings about LA meetups, please remove your name from this list.

I have opened the 2nd PR as the article's first FAC was withdrawn due to prose issues. Feel free to leave comments. Ssven2 Speak 2 me 13:47, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 2

For this month's issue...

Making sense of a lot of data.

Work on our prototype will begin imminently. In the meantime, we have to understand what exactly we're working with. To this end, we generated a list of 71 WikiProjects, based on those brought up on our Stories page and those who had signed up for pilot testing. For those projects where people told stories, we coded statements within those stories to figure out what trends there were in these stories. This approach allowed us to figure out what Wikipedians thought of WikiProjects in a very organic way, with very little by way of a structure. (Compare this to a structured interview, where specific questions are asked and answered.) This analysis was done on 29 stories. Codes were generally classified as "benefits" (positive contributions made by a WikiProject to the editing experience) and "obstacles" (issues posed by WikiProjects, broadly speaking). Codes were generated as I went along, ensuring that codes were as close to the original data as possible. Duplicate appearances of a code for a given WikiProject were removed.

We found 52 "benefit" statements encoded and 34 "obstacle" statements. The most common benefit statement referring to the project's active discussion and participation, followed by statements referring to a project's capacity to guide editor activity, while the most common obstacles made reference to low participation and significant burdens on the part of the project maintainers and leaders. This gives us a sense of WikiProjects' big strength: they bring people together, and can be frustrating to editors when they fail to do so. Meanwhile, it is indeed very difficult to bring editors together on a common interest; in the absence of a highly motivated core of organizers, the technical infrastructure simply isn't there.

We wanted to pair this qualitative study with quantitative analysis of a WikiProject and its "universe" of pages, discussions, templates, and categories. To this end I wrote a script called ProjAnalysis which will, for a given WikiProject page (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Trek) and WikiProject talk-page tag (e.g. Template:WikiProject Star Trek), will give you a list of usernames of people who edited within the WikiProject's space (the project page itself, its talk page, and subpages), and within the WikiProject's scope (the pages tagged by that WikiProject, excluding the WikiProject space pages). The output is an exhaustive list of usernames. We ran the script to analyze our test batch of WikiProjects for edits between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015, and we subjected them to further analysis to only include those who made 10+ edits to pages in the projects' scope, those who made 4+ edits to the projects' space, and those who made 10+ edits to pages in scope but not 4+ edits to pages in the projects' space. This latter metric gives us an idea of who is active in a certain subject area of Wikipedia, yet who isn't actively engaging on the WikiProject's pages. This information will help us prioritize WikiProjects for pilot testing, and the ProjAnalysis script in general may have future life as an application that can be used by Wikipedians to learn about who is in their community.

Complementing the above two studies are a design analysis, which summarizes the structure of the different WikiProject spaces in our test batch, and the comprehensive census of bots and tools used to maintain WikiProjects, which will be finished soon. With all of this information, we will have a game plan in place! We hope to begin working with specific WikiProjects soon.

As a couple of asides...

  • Database Reports has existed for several years on Wikipedia to the satisfaction of many, but many of the reports stopped running when the Toolserver was shut off in 2014. However, there is good news: the weekly New WikiProjects and WikiProjects by Changes reports are back, with potential future reports in the future.
  • WikiProject X has an outpost on Wikidata! Check it out. It's not widely publicized, but we are interested in using Wikidata as a potential repository for metadata about WikiProjects, especially for WikiProjects that exist on multiple Wikimedia projects and language editions.

That's all for now. Thank you for subscribing! If you have any questions or comments, please share them with us.

Julia Gjika

This is a hard one. I do NOT speak Albanian. I think she is noteworthy but am not sure how we prove it. Julia Gjika I added some data to what you had already put. There is a link to a SQWIKI that gives more data, but I have been unable to source. Would it be worth it to include that data and mark it as citation needed? She appears to be one of the first writers published after the censorship bans were listed and one of the sources I found says her output has increased 5 times since she left Albania. SusunW (talk) 22:26, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

SusunW, I wouldn't. I, too, think she is notable. And I don't speak Albanian; wish we could tap into someone who does. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:07, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

I found a couple more references today. Her peers speak highly of her and one of them does confirm her military service. I am not much on poetry, but I see her importance. SusunW (talk) 15:07, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
I am SURE I found the source for the SQWIKI. It is verbatum the language on that page. I am also positive (and I put it on the notes page) that the source I found, published in 2008, predates the creation of the Wiki page in 2009. I am satisfied that I have done the best I could to save her. The article is now at 2104 chars and the stub tag could be removed, I believe. SusunW (talk) 06:31, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Andreas Lubitz

I saw your comment on my Talk Page today, and smiled. The Germanwings Flight 9525 page has taken on a life of its own, and I usually wait until things "slow down" before I jump in. I did restore the Andreas Lubitz page, even though it is barely a stub. An AfD discussion is clearly inevitable, but as I have seen these things go, *IF* he acted as is alleged, there will certainly be an article on him. It shouldn't be an automatic redirect before that discussion happens, and I said so on the Talk Page (which I also filled in) It will be interesting to see how that page, and AfD/merge talk if that comes up, proceeds. Thanks for the heads up on the 2015 Los Angeles train crash, and for starting the article. I added a little to it, and will certainly come back to it in a little while. I'm still working on Anchorage Fire Department. I'm about 90% happy with it. I want to expand on the History section a little more. I believe it could flow a little better, with more information on the early fire depts which later merged. I had fun writing the Miss Linda section! A nice thing they did, for a good cause! :) I believe my next project will be to begin the Bartlett Regional Hospital (that's here in Juneau) article. But I have a lot of research to do before I write Word 1. Thanks again! Juneau Mike (talk) 00:24, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Mike... it is you who inspired me to join the "train wreck genre". Haha! Kidding aside, thanks for being so collaborative. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 00:28, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

My pleasure! Crazy that there have already been 5 significant train crashes so far this month - and those are just the ones on Wikipedia. I'm glad you started this article. I was at work all day and had not heard about it yet. MSNBC just did a brief report on it. Juneau Mike (talk) 00:38, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Rosie I went back to the article tonight. Added a little more background on Metro train crashes. The Blue Line has been particularly deadly. There have been an average of almost 5 deaths a year on that line. Also, there are no non-copyrighted pics of the crash, (obviously anything on the LA Times or other news websites are subject to full copyright, which is too bad because there are some great ones. That Hyundai looks like a ripped open tin can) so I used one from the Commons of a train on that line. I hope I have helped! :) Juneau Mike (talk) 08:53, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

That really helped, Mike. Hey, I just created Category:Railway accidents in California, patterned after the one you did for Illinois. There are probably several of the US articles which need to be moved into Category:Railway accidents in California but I'm mainly working on women's articles through 3/31 for Women's History Month so can't give it any more attention for the moment.. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:18, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Thailand train crash

I've suggested to another editor, who is very good at writing articles about issues in Asia, that Wikipedia could use an article about this incident: [6] Many killed and injured. I want to give someone else a chance before I jump in. If he doesn't create it, I probably will. I just don't want the style I use when I create an article to become the norm. As I always humbly say, "This isn't Mik-e-pedia :)

There was also a collision between 2 trains in Australia in recent days, but there were no injuries and I doubt that rises to the notability needed for an article. Anyway, I thought this may interest you. Juneau Mike (talk) 01:12, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
