Welcome!
[edit]August 2007
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to Wikipedia. However, please know that editors do not own articles and should respect the work of their fellow contributors on Sinhala Slang. If you create or edit an article, know that others are free to change its content. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --Darkwind (talk) 16:50, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I also forgot to mention that

Sinhala Slang
[edit]You missed nothing.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 05:44, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Hello! Interestingly enough, I happened across your note on Ryulong's talk page and realized that you're a native Sinhala speaker. While I can't say I am (I just do janitorial work there) I thought you might be interested to know that there is a Sinhala Wikipedia also. We're very small, but trying to grow the place!
If you'd be interested, please feel free to drop by and help us improve. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 05:45, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Deletion of Sinhala Slang -> Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sinhala_Slang
[edit]The Sinhala Slang article you created is nominated for deletion. I kind of expected it to happen, because in Wikipedia we write about what others have written from reliable sources in a neutral tone. Unfortunately you have to assure the material that you wrote from is already published. There used to be a Sinhala slang website now shut down but that may not be reliable either. Just like you when I joined Wikipedia, I created a lot of Original research but have come to figure out what to do now . The best option is to get your work published in Sri Lanka in a reliable journal, newspaper or book before you can write about in Wikipedia. Don’t despair Taprobanus 18:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
As the orginator and primary editor of above article, I understand and totally agree with the decision. I am not going to campaign for undeletion, as I do understand that there are two major issues with it. (WP is not a dictionary, and WP is not for OR). However, I want to publish this work in few Sri Lankan web sites. (with credits to all its contributors, and WP and also stating the reason why it was deleted from WP) I have been getting backups of the article content, and the wiki sources, but I may have missed last few edits on it. I was under the impression that deleted arcticles can be accessed, but unfortunately it does not seems to be the case. Ritigala Jayasena 05:38, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Can someone let me know if there is a way in getting copy of the article (and the wiki source for it) just before the deletion? Ritigala Jayasena 05:38, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- I talked to Ryulong just now, and I can email the article source to you if you'd like, but you'll need to activate the email function first. Visit Special:Preferences to do so. When you're done, leave me a note on my talkpage and I'll send it to you. Ciao. ~Kylu (u|t) 05:52, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- I moved your article from your talkpage to user userspace. You can find your article in User:RitigalaJayasena/Sinhala Slang. Regards, --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 18:32, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Echis carinatus
[edit]Hi Ritigala, No doubt you find my reverts of your edits to Echis carinatus irritating, but you need to understand the rationale applied here. The fact is that the Sinhala name that you believe is spelled incorrectly, "vali polonga," already has a reference: Checklists of the Snakes of Sri Lanka. Therefore, you can't just go in and make changes to this name without offering us a new reference, preferably a better one. Simply correcting the present spelling would also render inaccurate the only reference we have for this name. An even better strategy would be for you to add your spelling, "veli polonga," to the list along with your own reference. That way, it would be possible for visitors to compare the two references and make up their own minds about which spelling to follow. Hope this explains things. (PS -- Please answer here, as I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jwinius (talk) 12:54, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- As for adding this same name to Echis carinatus sinhaleyus as well, this is not the way names are documented and applied in these articles. Every name we mention in these articles is associated only with the highest taxon that it applies to, so in this case "veli polonga" would only be mentioned in the Echis carinatus article, or in the Echis carinatus sinhaleyus article, but not in both. Any eventual redirect for this name would also link to one article or the other, but not to both. --Jwinius (talk) 13:16, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- For a similar reason, I've had to modify your edit to Hypnale hypnale as well: no reference. In contrast, I was able to use the slwcs.org link (the checklist) above to see that another Sinhala name also exists for this species, perhaps a more official one: "kunakatuwa." Not that your name for it, "polon telissa," is any less correct, but it's up to you to find a reference for it. I know, I'm very insistent when it comes to references, but it's the only tool we have to prevent people from adding too much nonsense to our articles. (PS -- Please answer here, as I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jwinius (talk) 13:41, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Jwinius, Thanks for your lengthy explanation in this matter. I totally agree with your reasoning, and NO..I am not at all irritated by your reverts. In fact I am happy that these articles are being well attended and careed for. Looks like these articles are in good hands. In the mean time, I will follow your suggestion and try to find referances before doing any more updates to these articles. By the way you are correct that "kunakatuwa" may be the most frequently used Sinhala name than "Polon Telissa". I will try to find a referance to those terms. I am looking for the book by Professor Anselm De Silva (University of Peradeniya) which was my referance to these terms. Thanks again and Keep up the good work Ritigala Jayasena (talk) 14:45, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Excellent! I look forward to seeing your contributions in the future. Cheers, --Jwinius (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, see the following, Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(disambiguation_pages)#Foreign_languages, regarding the Rata disambiguation page (I was trying to post this link in my edit summary, but messed it up somehow). Basically, disambiguation pages don't list non-english usages of words like this, unless the word has become commonly used in english. --Xyzzyplugh (talk) 17:45, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Machan. Is it really necessary to publish those words people may not want to hear in Wikipedia. Most of them are true but...... what is the message you want to give to the audience? Think about it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Achinthamb (talk • contribs) 06:11, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Ritigala,
- please remove the footnote references to your userpage in Sinhala slang. As for me, you can put the content right on the Sinhala Slang page, where it belongs. Putting footnotes will not save you from any AfD, but is annoying to the reader. Jasy jatere (talk) 16:07, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

changing sortkeys
[edit]hi, i noticed you recently going through and changing the default category sortkey for several animals. while i don't have an opinion on which way is the "right" way, i would caution you against making changes to a system that is currently pretty consistent with sorting species by their common name, as opposed to "type". There are several hundreds of thousands of species and if we want this to be handled consistently it would be best to find some type of consensus at WP:TOL or WP:ANIMAL. after obtaining community-wide input, you might find an automated tool like AWB or popups to be helpful. --ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 04:10, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- I've been "bold" and "breaking all the rules", and hoping someone will point out if I am doing something outrageous. Thanks for the advice; and sure I will slow down and try to achieve consensus before venturing further Ritigala Jayasena (talk) 04:57, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Bird names
[edit]Hi there, good to see some interest from this region. Could you include citations to sources when you are adding info. I think G M Henry might be a good source. Also useful is http://www.bnhsenvis.nic.in/pdf/vol%203%20(1).pdf . More importantly it seems the general feeling is that a mere bird name in another language is not welcome in the English wikipedia unless there is a cultural factoid or etymological titbit associated with the origin of the name. The name is often repeated (although in a different script) in the interwiki links. Shyamal (talk) 06:07, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks for noticing! Well, whether the name the bird is called in its natural habitat (especially when it is an endemic bird) is not of interest to English wikipedia, is a debatable topic. However, I may not be qualified even to make that argument because; honestly I did not fully understand your comment about interwiki links. I think I need to know few technical details. I will slow down till I understand more about general consensus in English wikipedia. Thanks for the helpful comment Ritigala Jayasena (talk) 14:47, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Yes, I used to add the whole slew of South Asian language names from the above mentioned reference, and after someone pointed out why we don't have the German, Russian and French names have started looking at it on a case by case basis. So you can be sure that nobody will protest about "malkoha" being explained but some names like those of woodpeckers appear to be generic (at least from from what I could see in the Buceros reference above) and so was wondering about this addition. Nothing like adding good citations to keep such queries at bay in any case. Keep up the good work. Shyamal (talk) 15:14, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

- In any case, see WP:NAD and WP:NEO - an article would need a better source than Urban Dictionary. JohnCD (talk) 18:01, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- An error in judgement from my part there. Also, I had a slightly different understanding about the copyright issue. I am clear now on the copyright issue and I created the article again with more sources and my own wording of the 'Island Mentality' Ritigala Jayasena (talk) 06:37, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
