Latvian municipalities
[edit]Sveicināti un ņemiet par labu. Allow me to continue in English, it works faster for me and with less grammatical errors. You may reply in Latvian, I understand it fluently. I have translated novads to municipality since pagasts and historically apriņķis are referring to very small administrative units that initiates from times of feudalism. The word pagasts is going to fade from daily use in Latvia since all parishes are going to vanish in the future. To keep a clear distinction between historical parishes (pagasti and apriņķi) and modern Latvian local administrative entities, I think it is best to call the new novadi for municipalities - also, because that is a commonly used term throughout the EU for administrative entities of the same size. By the way, it would be interesting to know why Latvia is going to perform this administrative reform? My guess would be, that it has something to do with the EU, funding from the EU and a leaner budget on the lowest level of administration. Denmark had a similar reform 2007, the reasons being the EU and economy. Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 21:54, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, maybe You`re right and municipality is the best name in english for latvian novads, but it`s not the most correct translation as I told You before in Your talk page - novads is only one kind of municipality. But, of curse its not a big mistake and municipality can stay. Actually there is no big difference between novads and pagasts (parish) - just novads are about 4 times bigger (with some exceptions) than pagasts, but basicly - it`s the same thing. I already added redirections in latvian to all municipalities (novads) (for example, Ozolnieku novads to Ozolnieki municipality), because in my opinion its very propably that some english-speaking person will try to find more information in wikipedia about Latvias minicipalities from the maps, and in maps, I guess there will be latvian names of these municipalities.
- You asked about pagasts, apriņķis and territorial reform. Apriņķis was the name of administrative divisions of modern Latvias territory from the middle of 16.th till middle of 20.th century. In 1949. soviets changed their name to more Russian - rajons (district). The pagasts (parishes) was smaller divisions of apriņķis and later rajons. About reform - You`re right - it`s because administrative territorial divisions of Latvia was a relict from few centuries past and there was need to modernize it. But, if we are speaking about realisation then its secret for nobody in Latvia, that likvidation of districts and merging few parishes in one novads very often are not in interest of local people, but in interest of leading political party (Tautas partija) to make more advantageous election regions for them, and that o fcourse is sad.--Riharcc (talk) 06:29, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Latvian Presidents
[edit]I apologise about the Vīķe-Freiberga edits. I should have been more careful. However, Zatler was born in the Soviet Union. Therequiembellishere (talk) 15:55, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, damn! You're completely right. I wasn't reading carefully and was looking at that as "Birth place". Reverting myself right away. Therequiembellishere (talk) 17:30, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Re: Category talk:Patriots of Latvia
[edit]- Original thread at User talk:Black Falcon#Category talk:Patriots of Latvia
Hello. I don't think it can be fixed without deleting the category. I do not know the rules on the Latvian Wikipedia, but the problem is that the English Wikipedia's user category guideline does not allow this type of category. User categories must have the purpose of improving the encyclopedia, and not just describing users. There is Category:Wikipedians in Latvia, but that is not the same as "patriots of Latvia"... –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 17:04, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- The existence of one problematic category is not justified by the existence of other categories that are problematic. Again, I can't comment on the equivalent category in the Latvian Wikipedia since I don't know the rules about user categorization on that project; however, on the English Wikipedia, having the potential to facilitate improvement of the encyclopedia is the main criterion for user categories. Yes, the rule rule is imperfectly-applied, but it should not be ignored altogther.
- Renaming the category takes care of only one issue and is not really a solution, because it does not change the fact that a grouping of users "who are patriots of Latvia" does not have the potential to benefit the encyclopedia. The function of user categories is to create useful groupings of users, and users do not need a category in order to self-identify or give information about themselves. –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 18:13, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- I am not saying that all other categories which start with "Wikipedians..." are inappropriate; in fact, many of them are useful and have the potential to help in improving the encyclopedia. For example, someone who wants to improve an article about astronomy could benefit from knowing which users are interested in astronomy (see Category:Wikipedians interested in astronomy), and someone who wants to translate information from French could benefit from knowing which users speak French (see Category:User fr, "fr" is the code for French). However, there is no reason related to the encyclopedia that someone would need to know which users are patriots of Latvia.
- It would not be a problem if the user template did not have a category, since userboxes should not automatically include categories. I hope this helps to clarify what I said before. –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 19:49, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- You are most welcome, and I thank you for your willingness to discuss the issue. Cheers, –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 22:55, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for dealing with this, Black Falcon. You seem to have explained the issue very well. I actually came over here, however, to notify you of another category you created that I have nominated for deletion or merging, see here. Generally we don't have "Wikipedians by location" categories for areas with such a small population, or else we would have thousands of categories with only 1 or 2 users each in them. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi. I see you are listed as a member of a WikiProject of a Baltic state. I was wondering if anybody who actively works on Estonian, Lithuanian or Latvian articles, would be interested in launching your own Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Baltic), based on the Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) and Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea would be to try to bring about 1000 article improvements and creations on this region as an enjoyable challenge and potentially things like National Contests with prizes. If you'd be interested and think it's something you might regularly contribute to, comment and sign up at Talk:Baltic states. If there is interest we can move this to a project somewhere and set something up, thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:26, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
