Redirects

Some of the redirects you have created don't seem very likely to be useful. Redirects should be created only if the text they redirect from has a high likelihood of being used as a search term.

You have been creating redirects at a considerable speed, up to at least six in a minute. Please slow down and put more time into considering each one and deciding whether it is necessary. Have you been achieving such a high speed by using some sort of automated editing tool or program? Breaking sticks (talk) 21:52, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing says using semi-automated tools to create pages is not allowed. Twinkle and Huggle are massively utilized tools open to anyone, and besides this doesn't seem like overly fast page creation. He's just making redirects (well within the rules I might add) by copy and pasting the name and adding a quick #redir tag to it. I see nothing wrong with his redirects (yet), nor the speed in which they are created. If you are going to chastise a member for helping the community, please make sure it is based on our rules. One example of the above is redirecting from a full name, including middle name. That should be done only if the person is frequently referred to by the full version of their name. I strongly recommend not creating any more redirects until you have enough experience of editing Wikipedia to have a good idea what is considered appropriate and what isn't. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 08:52, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a rule though. In fact, according to WP:RPURPOSE that's the #1 reason for making a redirect. I'll use the example they used there; No one calls Pele by his real name (Edison Arantes do Nascimento) yet we have a redirect page for that long, never used name. I've been going through R64Q's redirects after I saw a new slew on them hit the NPP main page and all of them so far are redirects pertaining to the names used in accordance to this rule. The only ones I get apprehensive about are the names in other languages, but as long as they are copy and pasted correctly (double checked by me) they are appropriate and within the rules. Please don't feel badly about this, R64Q, because the editors against what you did just might be incorrect and not realize the usefulness of these redirects. Your editing and creating was, in my opinion, not bad at all for having been registered for about three months. You saw a need and you filled it, so if it's anybody's fault, it would be mine and other editors who left what appeared to be an unfinished job that you tried to complete. So yes, respect what Drmies has said above and wait for the outcome of the discussions. Hopefully the talks will centralize; however, for now here is a list of all the discussions so far:

Also, just FYI, the [[Category:Redirects from Twitter usernames]] does not have to be added as a category link at the bottom. That's because the rcat, {{R from Twitter username}}, automatically populates that category when you add it to a redirect. In addition, a small change to the category sorting has been made. The "surname" type sorting has been eliminated and just the name without the @ sign should be used, for example, use {{DEFAULTSORT:Justinbieber}} rather than {{DEFAULTSORT:Bieber, Justin}}. As you can see, Wikipedia is still very much a work-in-progress, so however this all turns out, let me thank you for your effort and work!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  03:27, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Paine Ellsworth: your comments made me feel better about this whole situation.
I'm a very new editor here on Wikipedia. The actual reason I joined was to try to help with redirects since I found I was often frustrated when I typed in some combination of words that wasn't accepted, and the Wikipedia search engine would rarely bring up what I was looking for. Here's an example: http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=List_of_countries_of_Africa_by_area&redirect=no
I was looking through the list of redirect categories and came across {{R from Twitter username}}. The associated category was nearly empty (maybe 20 or so redirects already in it) so I simply made the assumption that people had already determined that redirects from Twitter handles were perfectly OK on Wikipedia, but just that nobody had ever bothered to actually make them. I thus undertook the task myself. I never for a second considered I was doing anything wrong, and I'm sincerely sorry for any trouble I may have caused to Wikipedia.
I don't have an opinion on whether or not these types of redirects have a place on Wikipedia or not, since I'm such a new editor; like I said before, I simply created them since I saw something that looked like it needed to be done. Therefore, I would have no issues with the redirects and/or the template being deleted but at the same time if consensus allows for it I would be happy and willing to continue making the redirects. The decision is obviously out of my hands, but I would like everyone to know that I'd be satisfied no matter which way the discussion ends.
Also, I saw somewhere a mention of a TBAN on me. I would appreciate it if consideration could be given to the fact that I created these redirects in "good faith" and in no way, shape, or form intended to harm the encyclopedia. I feel that I have helped Wikipedia in other ways with regards to redirects (see Semmendinger's message to me above as an example). For this reason, I would like to be given a second chance and not to be given a "TBAN" as I feel that I am simply a beginner who should have gained more experience before undertaking a task like I have been. I feel that with more training I could become a beneficial member of the Wikipedia community.
It seems that there are a lot of different discussions going on about this in various places around the site, and I'm not very comfortable finding my way around. I don't really know where I can/should post this to the general public so please feel free to re-post any of my comments above in the appropriate forums elsewhere.

It's a pleasure, R64Q, to talk about redirects with a good editor like yourself. First of all, there is no reason to feel as if you did the wrong thing, because if anyone did wrong it was myself and other editors who left the category there as you found it instead of doing the job ourselves. In my defense, which is not the best defense there is, I can only say that I put it on a long to-do list and then got swayed and lost by other seemingly more pressing editing concerns.
As for the topic ban, I wouldn't be concerned at all about that, because as I read it, there were more editors against it than there were for it. Most of us realize it when a relatively new editor (although more than 5,000 edits in such a short period of time ain't too shabby and in fact is a better average than I have) does things that some consider questionable; however, as I mentioned in one of the debates, I myself was prepared to do precisely what you did, and I seriously doubt that anybody would have questioned it. The real reason behind all this is that some editors still find themselves a bit twitchy on this subject of creating redirects en masse because another editor has done that fairly recently and was topic banned for doing so. That editor's redirects were really bizarre, and so most of us think that justice was served in that case. However, that case is nothing like these circumstances, so please continue to hang in there, because Wikipedia always needs good editors!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  17:54, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, echoing Paine Ellsworth, please do not take any of these discussions personally. Unfortunately, the community has a tendency to get upset almost anytime anything is done en masse even sometimes, as in this case, it is seemingly acceptable. If the discussion had remained at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Redirect it would have gone a lot smoother; unfortunately things tend to get blown out of proportion when they get brought up at WP:AN/I. I just wanted to see how you were doing, as you haven't posted on any of these conversations. I'm glad to see you haven't stopped editing entirely. It looks like Paine Ellsworth and Godsy have already said most of what I wanted to say, but I do have a few more thoughts to add. Firstly, as has already been iterated, you made no mistake: you did your research, found a category, inferred that consensus existed for redirects of that type, and undertook the task of filling the category. In the end, there wasn't a clear consensus for these redirects (though it doesn't appear there will be a consensus against them, either), and it is not your fault for misunderstanding the situation. You were mislead by the information you had in front of you. Your mistake has nothing to do with being new, either. I've been here three years and have over 20,000 edits. I've jumped into something new with outdated information and been slammed by the changing consensus plenty of times, even within the past three months. See the time I used the criteria at {{WikiProject status}} to flag seventy WikiProjects as inactive and had ten reverted within twenty-four hours, to which I felt obligated to post a large, conspicuous apology on my talk page. Or the time I jumped into abandoned userspace drafts, equipped with the (apparently) massively erroneous advice at WikiProject Abandoned Drafts, and I became so confused I had to hold a massive, convoluted Request for Comment to clarify every Wikipedia policy pertaining to userspace and drafts. You did not handle this situation improperly, and provided you remain bold enough, you should expect it to happen to you again. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and at the end of the cacophony, the project will be a better place for the light you shone on an ambiguous matter.
If anyone deserves criticism in this affair, it is in my view Drmies, who should have known that going straight to the Administrators' noticeboard without even attempting to discuss it with you is awfully bitey. When he took it straight there, it made it appear as though you had made some error so massive that a dozen administrators needed to be called in to deal with it, and any error that requires a dozen administrators to fix cannot possibly have been made by a reasonable person, so you must have been incompetent or bad-faith and discussing with you was therefore pointless, and that while you are at it you should expect some punitive sanctions because anything that requires a dozen administrators to fix simply cannot go unpunished. This was anything but. Drmies could have asked you to stop while you two had a pleasant conversation, and then this could have gone to WikiProject Redirect for a calm discussion or RfC, and this would have been less painful and time-consuming for all of us. Unfortunately, editors who spend too much time at the Administrators' noticeboard sometimes forget how menacing it appears to new, good-faith editors. This is not just true of Drmies, but of the editors voting for a topic ban, who are used to discussing real problems there and probably assumed that some kind of discussion/dispute resolution had already been tried. We don't do punishment at Wikipedia, we only try to prevent further disruption. You have acknowledged that you made a mistake (even though you really didn't), have been calm and civil, and have been an immeasurably constructive contributor thus far. You have nothing to be afraid of, and I hope you continue to be a highly-active, productive editor in this underperforming part of Wikipedia for years to come. Think it should be said here that editor Drmies did not seek any sanctions against R64Q – the sanctions were suggested and supported by different editors. Drmies only sought a solution to what they perceived as a potentially big problem, and Drmies did after all come to this talk page to discuss this with R64Q. @Paine Ellsworth: So far as I can tell, Drmies lodged his first comment here the same time as the ANI, which I wouldn't call coming here to discuss. And threads at ANI that involve ambiguous issues tend to spiral out of control, which Drmies should know. But yes, I agree that he didn't do anything "wrong," per se, and I'm not trying to throw shade at him (at this point I feel somewhat bad, because he hasn't bothered to defend himself). I just think this could have been handled better, and I think R64Q ought to know that every relatively trivial incident like this does not and should not end up at ANI or lead to him being threatened (by anyone) with a topic ban. To editor Compassionate727: don't see anything wrong with getting the community's input just after user talk page notification. That gives the user a choice to either discuss it on their talk page or on the community page. And AN/I tends to get almost immediate attention compared with other project talk pages that are not watched as closely. Again, Drmies sought no sanctions, no topic ban, just a solution to a perceived problem:

Hi, QYYZ – yes, the two active discussions are as follows:
The first is to decide what to do with the redirects and the second is to disposition the category. The template that is used to apply the category on redirects, {{R from Twitter username}}, was kept.
