Pipe bands
[edit]Hi. I've noticed you adding a lot to various pipe band pages, and thought I'd introduce myself as another person trying to improve the piping articles on here. Technically there exists a Wikipedia:WikiProject Pipe Bands but in reality I just use my user page at User:Ostrichyearning to keep of track of what needs to be done. If you wouldn't mind citing your sources - it just makes it much easier in the future to check that things are correct. I'd also be interested to know where you are finding such complete information!

Hi there! I'm still learning my way around Wiki; I just spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how to reply to this message! Thanks for all the work you've been doing! I'm just trying to help out, with little bits of info, wherever I can. I'll try to always reference things going forward. I think I've figured that part out today! I've been going through a lot of old Pipe Band Magazines, Piping Times, Piper & Drummer (pre- Pipes|Drums), books that I own, other websites. The interviews on the Piper's Persuasion site can be good. The RSPBA website, College of Piping, etc. Sometimes even the liner notes of albums. Mostly, I've been trying to add lists of P/M's, D/Sgt's and Recordings to the band pages... that stuff is interesting to me. If I'm unsure of a date, I leave it blank. The history of pipe bands has always been important to me, but, it's hard to come by. So much is being lost. Today, I created my first Wiki page: World Solo Drumming Championships. I spent a good chunk of my night on it! I think I did ok with references. Basically it's just a list of the past winners, since 1947. I did the list in a table format... I thought it was going to be a sortable table but, it's not for some reason. I'll try to figure that out tomorrow! Maybe you could have a look and let me know it if seems ok? World Solo Drumming Championships I'm not logged-in to Wiki that often. Feel free to contact me anytime at my personal email - sullivan_r@hotmail.com Cheers! -Ryan

- Hi Ryan - new page looks great, I made a few minor formatting changes but nothing too major! Thanks to my youth and laziness arounds 2/3rds of the sources I have added are pipes|drums, and although that is an excellent resource it would be good to get some diversity, so adding references to the Piping Times and books etc. would be very useful. Another project I have in mind is to get photos of all the top bands at some point this season - there isn't much by way of freely licensed material, which is a shame, and if you're attending any games and take a few pics uploading them to Commons would also be a great help!

Donald Shaw Ramsay
[edit]I've recently added a bit to Donald Shaw Ramsay - would you mind having a quick look to see if there's anything obviously wrong or missing? Best, Ostrichyearning (talk) 14:51, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
DS Ramsay page looks great! A couple things: you could mention his 2 Edcath books, and the other book that he had a hand in (pipetunes mentions them). He was P/M for Ed Pol. Worlds wins in both 1950 & '54. He was P/M on the first Ed Pol album (Princes Street Parade) and possibly the 2nd one as well (would need to confirm). He did another solo album "Pipe Major Donald Shaw Ramsay" (Beltrane Sept 1942). It's mentioned in the CoP record archive http://www.collegeofpiping.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Record-Archive.pdf This would be in addition to the one that you mentioned. Also the Invergordon album. Just little things you could mention if you want. The one other thing (relates to the Invergordon page as well) - the band didn't end in 1967. Most of the top players left in '67, but the band carried on for a number of years after, still in grade one. There's a scan from the program of the 1973 CNE contest in Toronto that lists Invergordon. I believe the distillery itself closed down in 1977. The band may have existed right up until the but, I can't confirm that yet. I'll see what I can dig up on Invergordon... Cheers! R12sull (talk) 21:37, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
Sorry! I see you mention the 1954 win... missed that the first time I read it! R12sull (talk) 21:39, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Would be very interested to see what you can find on Invergordon - most online sources say pretty much the same thing (and are all derived from each other...) Edcath certainly worth a mention. Thanks very much - nice to have someone else looking and suggesting things. Thanks, Ostrichyearning (talk) 23:10, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
