Article Draft

[edit]

I think my article draft is ready to be peer reviewed. Also, I sent you an email about the Omega Man essay, but I'm not sure if you saw it. Thanks! Presleyjackson (talk) 03:08, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing

[edit]

Hi Prof Hanley, I picked Empty World for my article, but I'm having a difficult time finding any good sources for it. I'm worried I chose the wrong article. Is there any help you can offer me? Mcwright1981 (talk) 21:32, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried the library databases? I did a quick search and found two peer-reviewed journal articles that mention/discuss Empty World. Also, search through the newspaper database on the library website. (There's a convenient link to it from the journal search results.). I think you'll be able to find four or five good sources. In addition to sourcing, think about what other work the page needs - - there are alerts on the page in re citation and plot summary, so those are two obvious spots to begin. But, I think the page could use a fair bit of additional work - - sentence-editing, organization, etc. The article also mentions film/tv adaptations (w/o citing sources) - - this may also be something to investigate. I.e. I still think it's a good candidate for work. ProfHanley (talk) 16:42, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to talk about the intro of the story. For instance, what was the motivation for the piece, the dynamics the time the piece represents, etc. I also think there needs to be a reference to the author. I would love to add some photos, to give some visual to the page. -Brijet Finister

Proletarian Poetry Group

[edit]

So such an article does not exist, which is actually pretty cool and exciting. As with anything, though, how shall we begin? I propose to start with the basics: who, what, when, why, how, so what, concentrating on/around the 1930s...but then bringing it back up to today (i.e., I wonder if any of the Occupy Wall Street, SF, Oakland, Boston groups have written poetry?). Since there are only 3 of us, we can each pick 2 of the above mentioned 'basics'. I'm purdy down for whichever topic at this point.

What you guys think? Any and all suggestions welcome, yaya

Sara Giusti Giusti18 (talk) 02:59, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From Russ (Don't understand this tilda/signing jargon of Wikipedia): Oh hell yeah we have to bring it up to today! I know the poetry of today isn't as "revered" or canonicalized as literary people worship the previous iterations of movements, but everything from the 1980s angst against Reagan i.e. Bad Religion, Nine Inch Nails up through Rage Against The Machine in the 90s, and even up to Dropkick Murphys now is totally proletarian poetry. With tunes, of course. But yes, the Big 5 seems like quite a good place to start for the literary period the main focus should be on. I could do the "what" and "why"/causes or instigating factors?

From Jeff: Perhaps we should be slightly selective in how we define "Proletarian" poetry? I hate to be contrarian and skeptical, and at the risk of sounding slightly too dogmatic, are we sure the more bourgeois and liberal forms of poetry from today would qualify? Would the Occupy Wallstreet (which has an ethos of inclusivity, from radicals to liberals to libertarians) or Nine Inch Nail's aesthetic have strong enough connotations with class struggle to be considered "proletarian"? Are we defining it simply as a relationship to labor rights? Is being merely anti-conservative a position strong enough to be considered proletarian? Certainly there's poetry from today that would qualify, but maybe some selectivity is in order? These are some questions to ponder before jumping ahead; it seems to me however that there needs to be at least some element of class-consciousness involved to differentiate it from merely the politically liberal/progressive or "bourgeois". This would be a good place to start research, to discover if there's an academic consensus on how to define this genre.
In any case, I would certainly be interested in working on Hughes, or the "who" and "where/when" generally. Aerdil (talk) 07:56, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Jeff -- good points. We definitely need to begin here and go forward, and I'm glad you brought these up. It's going to make for a much stronger page and overall project. Thank you!

I do think we should still include anything we will consider proletarian poetry today in the article. Russ, that'd be awesome to bring NIN and other bands into the mix, haha. I guess, of course, this will need to be done after we figure out how/what we our definition of it will become...but we could argue such things, at least for kicks!

Does this leave me with the how, so what? Cuz I'm down. Hopefully in class today we can talk more about this. Stoked to have Wikipedia help too.

Assistance: A new project

[edit]

Hello again. We would like to assist you with a new project. We will put a team together.

The focus of your class project is likely for your students to learn how to contribute well-sourced, encyclopedic content. Probably, Wikipedia's formatting of code and markup is secondary. So, we would like to help with that part.

We ask that you instruct your students to add their newly-created articles to the list here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination/SFSU Class Project. Helpers will take it from there. Of course, the student are encouraged to continue to improve and expand the content. In fact, they are free to do whatever they like to the articles.

Eventually, introduce students to history and diffs. This will allow them to see the improvements that the helpers are making to their articles. It will prevent them from being forced into daunting and confusing areas of Wikipedia. They can then approach it on their terms.

Some helpful instructions that you can give to your students are as follows:

  • Check to see if the article already exists.
  • Don't copy and paste. Write in your own words. Just the facts. No opinion.
  • Browse other article to familarize yourself with the style.
  • Use good sources for your information. For example:
  • Your school library
  • Google books
  • Google scholar
  • Google search: example site:edu
  • Add the sources inline. For example: California is on the west coast of the United States.<ref>www.all-about-america.NYU.edu</ref>

Could you let us know about the course length and other relevant details? When do you expect them to start producing articles?

If you have any questions, please ask. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:10, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I wanted to ask if you would please consider my Wikipedia page as being ready to transform from a sandbox chrysalis into a beautiful new page? Hi Profhanley, for now I have restored the redirect to Olivia Gatwood. The content you added instead of the redirect is not enough to establish notability, which requires multiple sources that are independent of the subject. Gatwood's personal website is not sufficient for this. Additionally, it seems that a draft of this page is being worked on here: Draft:Olivia Gatwood. If you want to see an article on Gatwood created, I recommend you work on this draft. If and when that draft is given the all-clear, it will be merged to Olivia Gatwood with its history. Let me know if you have questions regarding this. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:04, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article last referenced

[edit]

...has changed significantly, as a result of my calling attention to various issues, esp. prior editor's use of the poet's promotional content from their webpage as substantial elements in the Career section of the article. Otherwise, as a former faculty member at a Big Ten university, I would be glad to discuss your experiences here, and your efforts to involve students in the encyclopedia. I no longer shepherd students in the work here; most time is spent moving articles of interest to colleagues closer to being encyclopedic (largely citation checking and related work). Otherwise, I look to correct and stem the tide of plagiarism here, which is perhaps my most significant impact. Cheers, will look here to converse (since I no longer log, and maintain no Talk page). 2601:246:C700:19D:1C9F:D382:94F8:2156 (talk) 05:26, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Morgan - - The problems I foresee with working on this article are twofold: 1) does the article need revision? I.e. are there information gaps? referencing/citation problems? writing problems etc.? There's not a lot of value in working on an article just to work on it. 2) sourcing - - I don't think a fan wiki or plot recap site are good sources. Have you done a library search for journal articles on American Horror Story? Or, a google scholar search? See the comments I left the other day on the talk page for your "Choose an Article." Problems Adding Images

[edit]

Hello Professor, I have been having trouble finding an image source for the comic book I am creating an article for (Descender). Apart from referencing the training modules, I did a quick search of askwikiedu.org that told me that I can upload a book cover under the guise of fair use using the file upload wizard, however when I followed that link I was informed that under no means would I be allowed to use the cover art. I am unsure how exactly to proceed, but I know it's not impossible because there are numerous comic book covers uploaded throughout wikipedia. Let me know what you think. Can't see peer reviews

[edit]

Hi Professor. I can't find my peer reviews. The links are on my wikiedu page but when I click on them, Wikipedia tells me they don't exist. Mcwright1981 (talk) 18:20, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just want to let you know that the dashboard.wikiedu.org seems to be downed in the late night. I am attempting to access the dashboard to complete my 2nd peer review but I have no idea what I could do for now. Ytan11sf (talk) 10:08, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft moved to mainspace

[edit]

I have officially moved my draft into the mainspace. I was unable to add an image into the inbox due to "fair use images" not being allowed outside of "article space" which I am not too sure how to troubleshoot. Other than that, I think everything has been done correctly. Please let know if there are any issues. Spencerqolney (talk) 21:32, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Professor, I received your message and I completed the potential article module along with the 5 possible candidate submissions. I decided on the following article: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Resident_Evil:_Welcome_to_Raccoon_City. I shall get to work on those sources as mentioned in your message plus everything else I need to catch up on.

Sourcing and Edits

[edit]

`Hey professor, I made some edits to my article. I'm still having trouble finding sources and figuring out what else needs to be done with it. If you or the TA could review it and hopefully point me in the right direction? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NRobinson22 (talkcontribs) 15:36, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Covet (Band) Draft Article

[edit]

Hi professor!

Just uploaded my draft about the band, Covet, that I have been following for a while. I think I was having issues on uploading the article but I uploaded on my Wiki page if you need to see it. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do!

Thanks,

Every student has been assigned two reviews - - with some picking up a third. Remind me in class to ask students to review your draft if they want extra credit. Thanks. ProfHanley (talk) 17:15, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Peer Review
