Notability of residential colleges

You previously commented on a dispute at List of Rice University residential colleges but the issue at the heart of that dispute appears to be more widespread. A RFC has been submitted on the best way to deal with the existence of many Wikipedia articles on residence halls and dormitories at colleges and universities that may not be notable. I'm sorry you were mentioned in those incident reports. Thanks for all your work thus far in improving the articles. I think the biggest thing you could do would be to try to make the nine colleges' articles more consistent in their formatting. I would love it if each college had the same sort of informational box in the upper-right corner of the page. I don't know if you have experience doing that, but I think that could be very helpful in improving the articles. The changes you've made to Martel's page were great. Wow! That template's great! Thanks so much for making it. I think it'll be a great addition to the articles. The one thing I think you should probably add is the category of Resident Associates. Other than that, it's incredible. If you don't mind, I'd like to apply your template to all the other colleges' articles so that they are more uniform. I think adding the colleges to the main Rice University navbox was a great idea. Well done! But now there is redundancy at the bottom of each page. I think it's important that we keep the residential colleges listed as a section in the main Rice University navbox. I guess it would be okay to delete the separate Rice University Residential Colleges one as long as each article has the Rice University navbox at the bottom and as long as that box still lists the colleges. Okay, I figured out what you were trying to do. I've set up the alerts in a more standard way (this is so the maintenance categories are cleaner and more systematic, so we can spot problems more easily). The usual way to do what you wanted is to use the subscription template with |display=none, and to transclude the /Article alerts page wherever you want it to be displayed. In any scenario, it'll behave like you want it to behave, and i'll be happy with how its set up.Headbomb {^ταλκ_{κοντριβς} – WP Physics} 02:29, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Flamingos spotted at Sheldon

I recently edit the Sheldon Reservoir article indicating that Flamingos had been spotted there in the spring. It was a minor thing and a tidbit of information but somehow seemed significant to me as I have spent many years, 35 in fact, enjoying this small jewel of a reservoir. I had never in 35 years seen Flamingos there and thought others might find it interesting as well.

I am curious as to why you would revert the article to the previous version.

Galveston article

I saw you've been making improvements to the Galveston, Texas article; I still have full intentions to help get it up to a FA, but have been pre-occupied the past two months with caring for a dying family member and as well as trying to mediate some disagreements in several middle-eastern related articles. Anyhow, most of that has now passed, and in the interim I have been collecting Chronicle/Galveston Daily News source articles, so hopefully soon I can get back to doing some serious editing. The photos of developing Houston

The photos are amazing! Particularly the one of the Texas Medical Center sign. I wonder if it is possible to make a fair use justification for that photo, since I am not aware of any freely licensed photos showing the development of the Texas Medical Center.

PostOak, I totally agree with your view about the shortness of the lead sentence of the BMC Software article -- perhaps it could be expanded to include the first paragraph. Originally, I felt inundated with terms I didn't understand, and wanted to simplify it to make it comprehensible to readers who don't know much about software (including myself) but I agree it's perhaps too short. Please feel free to fix at your discretion. Also, I agree about pictures regarding relevancy too, but I think having some mildly-relevant pictures are better than none at all (text looks so dry) but there aren't many pictures available. Perhaps its worth a try contacting the company and seeing if they'll upload pictures which can be used -- software flowcharts, anything helpful to explain, hopefully something better to look at which is informative and yet not biased towards BMC. Need Your Help on BMC Software

Some editor named "Ronz" keeps putting dubious tags on the article -- that it needs "wikification", that it needs "cleaning up", that it needs "better sources"; he doesn't give specifics. I think the article, as is, is solid, with good sources, references, good format, well organized. There are about 100 references. It covers everything. It's a good business article. I need your help in reviewing this situation. If you think the article is solid, please let me know, and please side with me if this becomes an edit war. Galveston Bay Area

It appears that the History section is the only unique section in the article, most of the other sections are borrowed from other articles. Unless it was renamed to "History of the Galveston Bay area" and only the history section retained and expanded, I would merge. Is the "Houston-Galveston Metro Area" an official designation? I didn't want to clutter the talk page with a drawn-out discussion, but can you elaborate? There is currently maybe 50% of the text that could be said to be borrowed from other WP articles (with some small tweaks). But the rest of the text is original and unique to the topic. Mind you the original text and borrowed text are sometimes interspersed.

Anyway, I just wasn't clear what this meant (i.e. are you saying that the unique stuff is unimportant and there is not enough unique material regarding important things?).

To clarify

Hello, when I first looked at the article it appeared that "History" was the only unique section with the other sections partially coming from other articles. I suggested that we keep the history section only, expand it and rename the article to something like "History of the Galveston Bay area". You've expanded the article with unique content related to the area, so I recommend that the article not be merged with Greater Houston. Of course, other editors may disagree. I thought after the deletion proposal discussion and the Rfc on the merge discussion went through that there was at least a general consensus on the merit of the article in general and we were past questioning whether the article and how it was being written were legitimate. But this does not feel to me like the case now.

I guess part of what I'm asking is "Can anybody explain why some editors seem to be so PO'd about this article's very existence?"

Perhaps one issue is that I am currently the primary editor on the article so it makes it easier to argue that I am biased. I was hoping that in the process of the Rfc's and the discussions that somebody else might take an interest in the topic and act as a co-author. So far, though, contributions have been limited to tagging and minor corrections (I even tried just not editing for a few days wondering if somebody who had previously been timid to contribute might choose to dive in).

Point being that I am not sure that a generic Rfc will push things forward. But I suppose I can try again.

Hey, I saw you added a mention of the "Free State" era. Looks good.

One thing this makes me think about, though, that the article doesn't capture is the vice culture that ended in the 1950s. Basically since its foundation Galveston had always been a very "loose" society and that is a major part of the reason the Maceos were so successful. The 1950s marked the end of a culture that had, in some sense, existed for more than a century. Not that I want to cast Galveston in a bad light but this seems like a some interesting to address historically.

I created a possible "Education in Galveston" sub-article in asandbox, so that we can trim the Galveston article's education section (while leaving the information available somewhere else -- if its really needed). A good part of the sandbox article is harvested from other articles, however the information copied lacked citations in the parent articles. More on Galveston

Vice in Galveston, agreed - we need to add a crime section to the article, what I would like to do besides including the standard statistics is to include the historic crime, vice, etc. in this section. Well, two thoughts:

• Historic crime can be mentioned briefly in a crime section but anything detailed belongs in the History section.
• What I am referring to, though, is not so much antisocial behavior or even simply organized crime. The citizens of Galveston historically had a very lax attitude about the law and morality. Essentially the Jean Lafitte's colony was never really abandoned and so the culture of the city simply grew out of that early culture. Although the city certainly developed its respectable side the people were still generally pretty accepting of activities that were technically illegal as long as they weren't violent. That lax attitude waxed and waned at various times but it never really went away until the 1950s when it was essentially stomped out (this can be compared to racism in the South that persisted through through Emancipation and Reconstruction until the Civil Rights Movement crushed it).

Actually I think I am perhaps stopping on GBA for a while. One editor suggested that maybe I should give other editors a chance to get over their hostility toward the article for a while and then revisit. I really have essentially all the content I want and the general form is decent. The references could use a little polishing but they are mostly better than typical GA articles I see.

Thanks. Finetooth also questioned the Postcard from the 40s. The pre-1923 exclusion does not seem to apply since the postcard obviously must have been made long after that. 1900 Storm

Thanks for the Barnstar. If you're inclined, I plan on working on the 1900 Galveston hurricanearticle soon, and as always, the more the merrier. It had been a FA but was removed due to several issues, the main one being that the article primarily dealt with one city -- Galveston. Other editors felt it should equally reflect impact of the storm elsewhere in the United States & Cuba (like is done in the Hurricane Katrina article). The problem I have run into is that because news-media was in its infancy during this era, and the "West" itself was not as developed, information pertaining to the storms effects elsewhere is limited.

Wow..considering the subject matter, I'm actually quite surprised its never made GA..or FA for that matter -- its definitely a topic that is deserving of such.

I wonder how hard it would be to get to the top of the Hilton across the street and take a panoramic photo of the campus... hmmmm... I ran into...issues...with Homeland Security for trying to take a photo of the Houston Ship Channel from the Fred Hartman Bridge...and UTMB police (on the advice of homeland security) have detained people for taking photos of their new BSL-4laboratory building. But...might be a good addition to the article.  :-)

The recurring troll is no doubt a byproduct of my adding photos to food articles (Hummus, Falafel etc) which have, sadly, been sucked into the endless Arab-Israeli conflict. --Nsaum75 (talk) 03:49, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Not much, just a good wide-angle lens and polarizing filter. For some of the extreme-wide panoramic photos, its good to have a program that can blend two or three wide-angle shots together.

Latest on the GBA wars :-)

My only concern (and perhaps I'm looking into this more than I should) is the first line in the lead where "Bay Area Houston" is mentioned. The Galveston Bay Area to me is a generic term - loosely south of Houston, down to Galveston, east to the bay and west to 288. "Bay Area Houston" is a term fabricated by the BAHEP in 2003 [1] It appears to me that we are promoting this economic partnership. Postoak (talk) 01:00, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

I didn't want to respond to your question on the GBA talk page right now since there is a more fundamental issue that still needs to be worked out first. But I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

Ultimately I'm not married to keeping "Bay Area Houston" in the first sentence. I initially did not put it there because, as you say, it is a term invented by the BAHEP. I'll mention a couple of reasons why I put it there.

• The term is not used exclusively by the BAHEP. In the last several years there are several organizations and businesses that have started to use the term (Bay Area Houston Transportation Partnership, Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theater, etc.).
• Not all of these organizations use the term to refer exclusively to the communities in the BAHEP (e.g. the BAHTP involves communities from Clear Lake to Texas City).
• The term is being used by travel books, travel web sites, and other organizations outside the Bay Area. So clearly the term has caught on. It is no longer exclusively BAHEP's marketing term even though it started out that way.

So I put it in there just because the term has actually gained some currency. But I agree that it is debatable since it is a recently invented term. If there is a strong feeling that this should be removed from the first sentence I have no big objection.

Yeah, the crickets are roasted in big batches on a comal -- so they're safe to eat (they taste like grass -- go figure)... The worms, when served whole, are ...mostly... roasted. They don't have much refrigeration here -- and its not for lack of availability, people just don't see the need in owning a fridge -- but when they do, they refrigerate stuff like peanut butter instead of important things like raw chicken. If you go to the root directory of that site, there's actually a lot of information on Houston area freeways -- plus some old freeway planning maps.

I was born and raised up in Galveston (5th gen BOI), but my father's parents lived in Webster (my grandfather was actually part of the command @ Ellington AFB before retiring), so I have many happy memories of summers in and around CLC as a kid....Galveston is another story... Growing up, the Island had two malls, three movie theaters, and a plethora of other things to do. But by the early 90s most of that was history...Now even the "old families" have been moving their businesses off the Island...I'm not sure what will be left in 20 years other than crappy tshirt shops. Hey, I know everybody got really sick of the GBA discussions. I still want to close the remaining issues without making it just my opinion (i.e. I'm looking to fend off future attempts to re-open the same issues).

Regarding the question on what names to use, since "Bay Area Houston" is such a "hot potato" do I have your support (i.e. can I say you agree with me) in suggesting that we simply use "Galveston Bay Area" in the first sentence, mention "Bay Area" later, and then not mention any other names? I'm sure somebody at some point will find a reason to have a problem with that but it seems to me the best compromise.

Farming

The Islands of Texas list farm is getting rather...long. I have asked the editor who has been prolifically (is that even a word?) adding to it, to add notations as to where the islands are located. I surmise that many of them may be spoil or dredge islands and are not WP:NOTE, but since I am not omniscient -- and google search fails to bring many of them up -- I thought specific geographic locations might help identify them (for research purposes). You may or may not be aware of this, but when uploading a photo to Wikipedia, craptastic things happen to its clarity, sharpness and colouring. Saturday I uploaded a night-time photo of Tex Children's Hospital and was unhappy with the crappy artifacts etc that Wiki put in the photo....This evening I tried to upload a new version in an attempt to compensate for some of the wikicrap...but unfortunately I think its worse than the original.... Just the main cities. And actually if you look at most countries we only use national maps. Regional maps are OK for smaller towns and settlements but major cities need clearer maps. E.g see Sydney. Houston = Fat?

I am going to do my best to assume good faith on your part here, but I was very surprised today when I noticed that you have once again deleted the "fattest city" information from the Wikipedia article on Houston.[11]

We already discussed this issue in August [12], and you agreed that the information about the Men's Fitness survey should stay in the article. You said, "Nevertheless, since it gets so much attention each year I suppose it should stay, unless other editors respond and the consensus is to remove it." As you will note, no other editors responded, and it was actually you who once again brought up the issue of removing that section. The justifications you offered in your most recent discussion of removal are not sound, as I will illustrate:

1) Study is not "scientific"

Since, in our previous discussion in August, I already explained why the unscientific nature of the survey is not relevant (and you agreed), I will not bother repeating those points here.

2)The for-profit magazine probably gets additional advertising coverage when mentioned here in the article.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "additional advertising coverage," but I suspect this point is irrelevant. Lots of for-profit companies get a kind of publicity from their presence on Wikipedia, but this does not mean their articles/mentions in other articles warrant deletion. I did not include the information on this study as advertising for Men's Fitness.

3)The ranking apparently is not mentioned on any other city articles that were included in the ranking. It is given undue weight here.

This is also irrelevant. I added the information about Houston's repeated high position in this study because it is a valuable addition to the Houston article. This doesn't require me to also go through and add similar information to other articles. The fact that the Houston article does include this fact makes it a better article; the information should be added to others (maybe by you, if you think it is a glaring omission and have the time), not removed from the Houston article.

Sigh

So this evening I decided to try to "de-sandwich" some of the photos in the Galveston article (plus switch out some of the pics to "freshen" it up).. I think I just made things worse though, as now there is a wall of photos on the left... Sigh....I expanded some of the text, but feel free to revert as needed... Clearwater is nice. Did you get a chance to travel down to the Naples area?? Sanibel Island is wonderful. I'm back in Mexico until the end of July...then off to Israel for a few weeks...with hopefully a short stop back in Texas sometime beforehand...It just depends on if its cheaper to fly to Israel via Rio de Janeiro or via Atlanta...US international airfare has become outragious!
