DYK for Hamilton Brown

On 26 February 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hamilton Brown, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1832, sugar planter Hamilton Brown argued that slaves in Jamaica were better off than the poor in Britain? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hamilton Brown. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hamilton Brown), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Notice

The article Raymond Butt has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I don't believe that he is notable enough to be on Wikipedia. He's a school teacher and part of the Royal Astronomical Society. There are many people out there that do the same. Doesn't mean that he released one book that he's become famous.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Plum3600 (talk) 09:34, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, If you don't think your article should be deleted either discuss about why it shouldn't be deleted or move your article to the draft so it can be made better and then accepted into a draft. Thank you Plum3600 (talk) 14:20, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. John De Costa

hi...I came across this name on Air Rhodesia Flight 825....I feel it needs an article....what do you think? Whispyhistory (talk) 20:00, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

You are probably right but why that one particularly? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:25, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
I came across his name when researching a transplant surgeon who was travelling at the same time. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:34, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Anglican Dean of Salisbury, but did he perform surgery or collect postage stamps? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:42, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
No...Emu...It just seemed important and touched my heart. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:55, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Well he was a dean so that's a good start. If you create it I will add what I can. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:01, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you Kindly ...can you do a logo for IMSA too..please. I will research deCosta in meantime. Whispyhistory (talk) 21:12, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Can you add anything here: Edward Chauncey Luard? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:20, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
will take a better look later, thank you Whispyhistory (talk) 07:32, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. BTW, I don't think we need to routinely link to Google Books unless there is a full preview as it adds little. If we are linking to verify the publication details, World Cat is a better choice as it is more detailed and shows library holdings of each book. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:36, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
understood Whispyhistory (talk) 18:43, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
In book citations, we don't link directly to online sellers or catalogues. There are two main kinds of link that we use, and the way that these are done differs according to the citation method. For plain text citations, as with this edit, we would link the title to a webpage which reproduces the actual text of the book; and if the book has an ISBN, we would put that into an {{ISBN}} template - this provides links to many catalogue services. If you use the {{cite book}} template, its |url= parameter may be used for a webpage which reproduces the actual text of the book; and its |isbn= parameter can be used for the ISBN. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:39, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Indeed. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:46, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks both as usual. @Philafrenzy: and @Redrose64: hopefully see you in Oxford next. Your advice is very valuble. Back tomorrow. Whispyhistory (talk) 21:03, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
@Redrose64: see Raymond Butt, a man after your own heart. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:20, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
He is incredible. well done. I found another unnoticed person...Bill New who invented the pulse oximeter. Whispyhistory (talk) 21:25, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Y'know, as you were writing that I was using his book to make this edit. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:00, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
That book is cited on many railway pages. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:17, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Thousands! Philafrenzy (talk) 21:23, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Many of them due to edits by myself. I think that the first time I used it as a ref source was here. I've had the book for just over nine years, judging by this post. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:08, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Party piece

There are a number of people made famous from their party pieces. I think the list may be endless. I imagine a number of Britain's Got Talent were party pieces. Of interest [1]. I like the second hook better, although all are good. Good work and very entertaining. Whispyhistory (talk) 12:49, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. I think everyone has some sort of talent they don't normally show. @Redrose64: for instance is an expert clog-dancer.[citation needed] I had to stop adding new examples as there were so many. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:16, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on this (also Whispyhistory and Redrose64). I've just highlighted a few issues at Template:Did you know nominations/Raymond Butt. Raymond was one of the longest serving members of the Transport Ticket Society, joining soon after the society in its present guise was formed, and we corresponded fairly regularly on ticket-related news. Although not directly ticket-related, his 1995 directory is one of the most important publications ever written by a society member, in my view (and there have been many!). BLP violating article deleted

I have deleted Priyanka Fernando under the G10 speedy criterion. You claimed that he had commanded a division which had been accused by the UNHCR of "human rights violations", but as far as I can tell none of your 5 sources make that claim. If the claim is indeed in one of these five sourecs and I missed it, then of course I or any other admin may restore the page as is. Otherwise, please take care not to post such serious negative claims without very good sources to support it. Fram (talk) 10:41, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

The sources you used were

  • Brown, David (4 March 2019). "Sri Lankan envoy convicted over threats to protesters". Thetimes.co.uk. Retrieved 5 March 2019.
  • Bowcott, Owen; Taylor, Diane (1 February 2019). "UK arrest warrant for Sri Lanka attache over throat-cut gestures revoked". Theguardian.com. Retrieved 5 March 2019.

  • "Brig. Priyanka Fernando to China". Dailymirror.lk. Retrieved 5 March 2019.</ref>
@Fram: It was indeed in the sources. I don't do "attack" pages. See The Times too: "He had been a senior officer in 59 Division of Sri Lanka’s army, which the United Nations has accused of involvement in war crimes in the final stages of the civil war." Please reinstate. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:47, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
In which of these five sources was it included? You now present another source, not one of the five original ones. Fram (talk) 10:52, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
I think the earlier Times source was omitted by mistake but I now can't see the article as you know. Please reinstate and add that source or ping me and I will add straight away. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:03, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
"I can't now see the article": that's why I listed the sources you included here. Please make sure that with such claims (if they even need to be included, allegations without convictions usually aren't even included) you not only include the source but make it clear which source supports the allegation, instead of dropping a number of sources at the end and let readers go on a wild goose chase for the right one. Fram (talk) 11:10, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
@Fram: As I recall there was a ref after that bit. You could have dropped me a note. This wasn't a wild allegation on social media. This was from the UN and reported by The Times. Are you going to reinstate it, with or without that point? Philafrenzy (talk) 11:14, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
All the refs were after that bit. Fram (talk) 12:25, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I am going to expand saying the command he had without referring to the human rights offences alleged by the UN. Others, however, may add that as he is one of the most well-known men in Sri Lanka and a highly controversial figure there and abroad with respect to the treatment of the Tamils. ok...I have also been looking at the other orangutan articles eg Ken Allen. I wonder if there enough articles to go into a category of San Diego Zoo animals. Whispyhistory (talk) 09:29, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
I noticed. I would suggest starting just with the zoo category. P.S. the image will be deleted because she is alive. I thought from "survived 25 years" that you meant now dead. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:34, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
Great work again, both of you. We need more articles on individual animals, and orangutans are some of the most "individual". I remember we enjoyed doing Tibs the Great, who was once a kitten. Edwardx (talk) 09:56, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Liam Brennan

Okay I was looking over the shortest BLP's. One you made, Liam Brennan says he is the president of something, but I can't see his name on the link. Should the ref be changed or something? (I can't put dead link since it isn't a dead one.) Just something to look over. Wgolf (talk) 04:16, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

His name is on the website if you type it in search, but I have added a little more information and a few reliable sources. Thanks Whispyhistory (talk) 05:49, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I suspect they drop off that page when their term ends as his did in September 2018. The new president is Ravi Mahajan. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:17, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Paris Convention 1910

Hi..please alter dyk as appropriate..I couldn't think of a good hook. Whispyhistory (talk) 18:05, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
I will look. Philafrenzy (talk) 08:49, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Not sure we have the right English name yet. Is it a convention or a conference? The only name we can be sure of is the French version, site of the event and French being the language of diplomacy at that time. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:06, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
you're right. I started with [3] and then didn't notice. Whispyhistory (talk) 06:51, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
And a convention where people meet (same as a conference) is not the same as a convention in the legal sense (a legal agreement between nations). Philafrenzy (talk) 08:19, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

Some of the red links have articles in foreign languages. Fagg taught on the early conventions/conferences eg 1910 Paris conference. He would have talked about the balloons crossing borders probably. I'll check more later. The journal looked uninteresting at first, but there appears more to it. Whispyhistory (talk) 13:18, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
