Some major geography expansions
[edit]Hey Pfly, how goes. Just wanted to let you know about one of the university classes I'm working with here on WP. It's an environmental history course at UBC here in Vancouver, and they're doing some major expansions on some cool W.Canada/Pac. NW topics. Trying to get get some more eyes on the new stuff. If you're at all interested, you can watchlist some of the articles listed at the course page: Wikipedia:Canada Education Program/Courses/Present/North American Environmental History (Tina Loo). They're going "live" some content over the next three weeks or so. Anyways, hope all is well with you, The Interior (Talk) 04:01, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Template reversions
[edit]Regarding these edits: [1], [2][3]. My initial reaction was that your reverts were unjustified, but I guess I could be wrong. Could you explain your concern to me? HuskyHuskie (talk) 03:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, maybe I was being overzealous--it's quite possible. I reverted a few others for having broken links and empty lines and/or repeated info already on the pages, and such like. Those last three were based off what I read at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents #Hundreds of faulty geographical templates needing deletion and edits reverted and a quick look at the website being used as a reference. But I admit I haven't investigated too far, and the basic idea might be good. Feel free to revert me if you want. Sorry if I jumped the gun. Pfly (talk) 03:59, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I looked at the version before the template and with the template, and the information is nearly identical (8 of 10 cities have identical populations; two of them are slightly different, though not enough to change their ranking). I've already reverted you at Illinois, but that's enough for me; I'll leave it to other states' native sons to decide for their articles. HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:01, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for involvement in talk; side note
[edit]Thank you for kickstarting Talk:List_of_fixed_crossings_of_the_Hudson_River out of the impasse. You introduced useful primary sources which I did not know about or think to access.
As a side note, you might want to glance at [4], where it is revealed that Flowed Land with its dual outflows is a manmade feature. --Cstaffa (talk) 01:12, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Ah ha, interesting. I was thinking "Flowed Land" is a curious and cool name for a waterbody. Now I wonder...before the dam at Flowed Land was built that caused much or most of the Opalescent River to flow down Calamity Brook, did Calamity Brook connect to the Opalescent at all? If not, then before the dam was built Feldspar Brook and Lake Tear of the Clouds would have been a tributary of a tributary of the Hudson, which would hardly seem a contender for "true source". Ah well, I have chores I should be doing rather than researching this too much! Pfly (talk) 04:51, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey, not a regular Wikipedian contributor, but was looking at Talk:Salish Sea and saw your comment about maps. I agree that there are several better than the sat. image used. See here: https://www.google.com/search?q=salish+sea&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=GXuPULrvCaTVigKrz4CoCg&ved=0CDQQsAQ&biw=929&bih=642&sei=XHuPUL3RI6mxiwK1-ICAAQ
I didn't want to pursue this myself as it is beyond my skill level at the moment (sizing, permissions), but I wanted t ask you if you are inclined to find a clearer map. I live in Port Angeles, and I'd personally like the Puget and Georgia Sound to get the overlay label "Salish Sea" as I think it is useful, resonant, and somewhat healing. Good work, btw, on Wikipedia. You've put in some effort. forestflyer (talk) 07:27, 30 October 2012 (UTC) |

- Hehe, thanks! I wasn't sure if anyone would even notice my recent edits to some of these remote BC rivers, like the Chilako River, which is practically an orphan page. I've sometimes tried to work on Fraser River tributaries but found the total Fraser system way too big and complex to work on all at once. So I thought I'd start with a sizable but remote and "not too complicated" tributary, like, oh, I have no idea, the Nechako River? Sure, why not? After a while I realized I had picked the wrong tributary for "not too complicated". Wow, Kenney Dam, the reservoir, the diversion to Kitimat, etc—that's some major terraforming! So I spread out to other Fraser rivers. But I am making a page for the Cheslatta River, which could be worth a DYK—a once relatively small river transformed into a giant drain for the Nechako Reservoir, sometimes subjected to such large flows it carved new channels...quite a story. Who says Wikipedia has a page on everything? Pfly (talk) 23:08, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- It's tres crazy up there, all for an aluminum smelter! Must be one of the bigger impoundment areas in the world. Ootsa Lake I've dipped my toes in, there was a 100,000 hectare island for sale up there once for something like 40,000 bucks. The whole thing. I'll try help out with Cheslatta, I'd like to visit the Natural Resources Canada library here in Van before it's shut (grrrr..), maybe fanangle one of the big DFO river bibles before it hits the dumpster, they're stats heaven. There's a three volume, 600 pager that I catalogued during my practicum. The Interior (Talk) 23:33, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- Got a translation of "cheslatta" to start from the Akriggs: Carrier, "top of small mountain" or "small rock mountain at east side". The Interior (Talk) 23:40, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- I just found that too :-) ...I think it was the biggest impoundment in Canada at least, but surpassed by Williston Lake on the Peace River, I think. Still probably one of the world's larger ones (
there's got to be a WP list about that, no?List of reservoirs by volume) Anyway, I should get a reasonable Cheslatta River start page up later today—something worthy of submitting a WP:DYK, but probably still just a start page. I found a couple of books online that describe some of the river-chaos on the Cheslatta and upper Nechako after the spillway was let loose. For folks living near those rivers it was end-of-the-world-ish. There's also interesting stuff about Alcan and the BC government colluding to, among other things, silence or disempower the people who were (and are) protesting. Anyway, working on a Cheslatta draft now... Pfly (talk) 00:17, 6 August 2013 (UTC)- Hmm, only 35 by volume, eh. Bet you it's up there in terms of area. I'll take a look at this tomorrow at work, might have some good hard data. As for the hoodwinking of the public by Alcan/PofBC, probably the Evenden book is best. Just calling the 1970's part of the project the Kemano Completion Project was a smooth p.r. move, making it sound like a fait accompli. It all makes for some good DYK hook possibilities. The Interior (Talk) 00:38, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Heh yea, "completion", almost laughable once you realize the PR spin. And wait, which Evenden book? There's Fish versus power : an environmental history of the Fraser River. The Seattle Library is quite lacking on this subject, though UW's library has some stuff, like this Christensen book Too good to be true : Alcan's Kemano Completion Project. Not that I'm likely to get to any library anytime soon... Pfly (talk) 00:56, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Cheslatta River
[edit]
On 12 August 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cheslatta River, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that when the small Cheslatta River in British Columbia was turned into the Nechako Reservoir's spillway, three Cheslatta Carrier Nation graveyards were washed away? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cheslatta River. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

I'm going to fill out some more of our BC rivers articles this year, helped by my new Rivers of North America (200$ later!). Right now, we've got the North and South Thompson split off into two standalone articles. All paragraphs need to be cited for a DYK nomination. Thanks.KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:33, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Also feel free to add another hook instead of mine on the nomination page. I wasn’t trying my hardest to think of the most interesting part of the article.KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:35, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- That’s fine but please make sure to cite the remaining citation needed sentences when you are back from your break. Thanks.KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:43, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
DYK for Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe
[edit]
On 28 August 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that maritime fur trader Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe and most of his crew were killed by Native Hawaiians in revenge for the flogging of a chief by Metcalfe's father days before? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

2019 US Banknote Contest
[edit]US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

[edit]Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe
[edit]In 2010 you created the article Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. I have left a message on its talk page about the article title. As your involvement seemed to be limited to creating the article and one edit a year later I decided not to ping you from within the comment I left on the talk page. Hopefully, the subject is still of interest to you. --Marc Kupper|talk 19:35, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Vector map of Ganga/Brahmaputra
[edit]Hello. I'm doing research on Indian rivers and came across [7]. I would like to map the river paths on my own preferred (satellite-based) background earth image. So could you please share the vector paths of the rivers as well? Thanks!

- Thanks for your reply on my user page! I feel silly I didn't even get the idea of looking into Natural Earth. I'll do just that! Jamadagni (talk) 09:23, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for July 27
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Duke Island (Alaska), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Westerner. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
