Welcome!

[edit]

Hi, Obriens86. Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Our intro page contains a lot of helpful material for new users—please check it out! If you need help, visit Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask a question on your talk page. ww2censor (talk) 09:42, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ww2censor. If I'm honest, I am very confused with Wikipedia and have seen that 2 of the images I uploaded have been deleted. I work for the company who made the FDCs and I have been given permission from them to use the images. The files are of a lower resolution and are therefore not a high enough resolution for replication and use, so I am free to put them in the public domain and everyone may access them. Unfortunately I am not at work so cannot provide an email to prove this. I would appreciate any help you have to offer but I won't be able to access my account properly until Monday. Obriens86 (talk) 14:59, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it can be a bit frustrating for new editors but there are certain rules that must be followed and you will likely make some mistakes as we all did. The policy on copyright is one of the more complicated ones. I have been working with copyright issues both here and on the commons for several years, especially with philatelic files. BTW, I was pretty certain you are connected to a dealer of some sort so I was correct is suggesting that you may have a conflict of interest so you need to be careful how and what you write. Nothing promotional is allowed and can get you blocked. So, about the deleted covers, you should be aware, if you are not already, that British stamps, issued by the General Post Office or probably more correctly Royal Mail are covered by Crown copyright which lasts for 50 years, so even if the cover design is free the stamps are not, so you can't put the covers as a whole into the public domain. That's why they were deleted. Yes, I know you can find such covers on the internet but that is a different matter and we have a very strict copyright policy which does not even allow commercial or derivative uses. Well, there are some rare exception but that's a discussion for another day. I corrected the other two covers and they have been moved to the commons which is where you should upload images that are freely licensed so other language wikis can use them. If you can upload a new version of the Penny Black FDC showing the datestamp it would be great. Just overwrite the existing one and I'll review it, but it may get moved to the commons before you do that so just upload the new version over there. I'll be happy to try and help you get more acquainted with the way things work, so just drop me a post on my talkpage and I'll try my best. ww2censor (talk) 17:06, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, that has definitely offered some insight, and with regards to the stamps, I didn't actually know that! So that will help for uploading in the future. My only interest is to educate people on the world of First Day Covers, so no conflict of interest here. It's a dying art and there is not enough information (in my opinion) readily available for people. There are so many vast layers and topics within it that I wanted to write my article to offer people the chance to learn more on the subject. It is from an information stand-point only. I certainly have a lot to learn about the world of Wikipedia! Obriens86 (talk) 17:18, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It might be of interest for you to read my image copyright information page that covers most of the issues you might find on this topic. You may also want to familiarise yourself with these two commons pages: Stamps copyrights and Public domain templates for stamps. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 09:32, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:James Bond Diamonds cover.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:James Bond Diamonds cover.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MilborneOne (talk) 19:08, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:James Bond Diamonds cover.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ww2censor (talk) 09:43, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding redlinks to several articles per WP:REDNOT; they have all been removed. There is already an article First day covers that is well enough illustrated, so the redlinks to a non-existent article of the same topic are totally unnecessary. Based on your uploads it also appears you have a conflict of interest, so you should be aware of WP:COI.

BTW, there is no evidence this cover File:Penny Black cover, first ever First Day Cover from 6th May 1840.jpg is actually a 6 May use unlike File:Stamp GB-Penny Black first day cover.jpg which has a postmark verifying its use on that day. It could be any Penny Black use unless you also show the dated postmark. ww2censor (talk) 21:14, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Obriens86: I am extremely new to Wikipedia so I am grateful for any feedback. I've written an article which delves deeper into first day covers, just didn't have time to upload it so the links didn't actually go anywhere, apologies! I will edit the image of the Penny Black

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

If you are trying to start a new article you should really start your editing career by improving or developing existing ones. However, if you are considering a completely new article it is best for a novice to start it as a draft article, where it will be reviewed by other editors and moved to mainspace if it is suitable and notable enough for a standalone article. You can start a draft article from this page Wikipedia:Drafts (a little down the page is the start button). Good luck. ww2censor (talk) 09:41, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. If you want to continue working on your draft, you'll need to add references and make the tone more encyclopedic. Furthermore, your draft only discusses the Royal Mail. "First day covers" are issued all around the world so a good encyclopedia article would need to address this rather than focusing on a single country. 97198 (talk) 09:50, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have the permission from Royal Mail to show these stamps, they know that they are being used for Wikipedia and that the images can be used elsewhere. The question of permission was raised a while ago and the images were passed, so why you're trying to say they're not now doesn't make sense. Please review

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited First day of issue, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hornby (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Deletion pending for File:Beast and Blades cover for Game of Thrones stamp issue 2018.jpg

[edit]

Hello, Obriens86. Some time ago, a file you uploaded — File:Beast and Blades cover for Game of Thrones stamp issue 2018.jpg — was tagged with {{OTRS pending}}, indicating that you (or perhaps the copyright holder if you did not create this image) submitted a statement of permission to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Though there is often a backlog processing messages received at this address, we should have received your message by now.

  • If you have not submitted (or forwarded) a statement of permission, please send it immediately to permissions-en@wikimedia.org and let us know at the OTRS noticeboard that you have done so.
  • If you have already sent this message, it is possible that there was a problem receiving it. Please re-send it to permissions-en@wikimedia.org and let us know at the OTRS noticeboard that you have done so.

If we don't hear from you within one week, the file will be deleted. If we can help you, please feel free to ask at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 14:38, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
