In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wiki-Conference NYC 2010, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia Ambassador Program and Wikipedia Academy, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the May meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

An update from adopt a user
Hi there Mono! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.
On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.
Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.
Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

- (talk page stalker) Please be patient Ian. Like most of the rest of us, Mono has a RL to deal with. On that note, bit of friendly advice I give my adoptees; if you don't get an answer to your question as soon as you would like, it is always better to wait until your mentor gets the chance to answer you than to make a mistake and "get into trouble". So... be patient... you've got a great mentor... Mono will get back to you when possible. Best, ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 23:37, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Idea for adoption training
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Mono, I had an idea. Maybe we could each grab up a couple Wikipedia friends and do a false revert war. I'll take Airplaneman and Access Denied. Let's do a user subpage on my page so I can easily reach it and you can easily reach mine. Here: User talk:Ian.bjorn There. Let's do it when you're ready. Leave me a message on my talk page when you want to start. Ian (talk) 05:46, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- But why? How would that be beneficial? ⅊™ 20:07, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Clever, Mono. I thought maybe we make a sandbox and one of us makes something we like and the other changes it. Then we can see what it's like to be in a revert war. Ian (talk) 00:19, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- Why would you ever want to be in a revert war? It's not a game, Ian, stop acting like it is one. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 00:35, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Ian, please read WP:MYSPACE one more time. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 00:36, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Ok, Ok. I just had this crazy idea and now I know it's wrong. Ok, I'll have to find out about it when someone pulls me into one. But then, I'll ask for help winning it. How's that? Ian (talk) 01:32, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- No. You don't 'win' revert wars by the simple act of not getting into them. Please read this link on how and where to revert appropriately. Reverting clear and blatant vandalism is an exception from the three revert rule, but be very, very careful. → ROUX ₪ 02:45, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Uh, I knew that already. 3RR, been there, done that. You win it by having many friends with you to overwhelm him so you don't get it violated. Ian (talk) 02:54, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- No, you don't. It's not a matter of winning or losing. You wonder how users get banned... THENEWMONO™ 03:01, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Category request: Category:Sister Sledge audio samples
Please insert this text:
Category:Non-free audio samples by artist
It seems unlikely that there are enough pages to support this category. Hello, please take into account that there are many similar categories in the Category:Non-free audio samples by artist. The categories are needed in order to set a link from other Wikpedias, where nonfree content is not allowed. -- 84.132.58.246 (talk) 12:50, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- I don't see the point if there's only 1 file in the category. THENEWMONO™ 19:03, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I know only a little english. Maybe my text could be difficult to understand. There are four files in the Category:Sister Sledge audio samples. If you click by this link, you can read there: "The following 4 files are in this category, out of 4 total.". Every of the four links points to another site. And as a special service for music-files they can be heard all on this category side direct similar than a gallery. This makes it easy for the user, not to call four sites in order to hear them. But you can use the four single-file links as well, if you want. Maybe this looks like only one file, but there are four in the category. -- 84.132.44.188 (talk) 22:08, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

TIFFs take forever to load, and you should crop it so it's much smaller and leaves out the MBA (which I so dearly want now, although paying $200 for an extra 64GB is ridiculous). But the Apple website seems to use pngs; why not use that instead? /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:04, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- Those are the "official" press photos and I am too lazy to convert it; anyway, the goal was to get an image up that was accurate. THEMONO™ 03:29, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

File:MacBook Air October 2010 Promotional Image.png and File:MacBook Air television advertisement (screenshot).jpg
I am not seeing why a free image couldn't be made that provides the same information to the reader as File:MacBook Air October 2010 Promotional Image.png and File:MacBook Air television advertisement (screenshot).jpg. Especially the first one, but even the second one could be restaged. Angus McLellan (Talk) 10:31, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
No, it could not. How would you get
- the exact MacBook Air shown
- the exact person's hand
- the exact envelope?
We want to be accurate; it would likely be a derivative work anyway. The first one will be replaced as soon as:
- someone publishes an image online
- I go to the Apple Store
So, that's why. THEMONO™ 22:54, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- First image violates NFCC. It's whether a free version can be produced or obtained easily, which is yes. So image one needs to go. Image two seems OK; commercial would need more coverage within article to make pic necessary, though. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:38, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- Found; please G7 or remove your disputed tag. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 01:49, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Article of the month – Alan Kulwicki, selected as a good article
Alan Dennis Kulwicki (December 14, 1954 – April 1, 1993), nicknamed "Special K" and the "Polish Prince", was an American NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series) racecar driver. He started racing at local short tracks in Wisconsin before moving up to regional stock car touring series. Kulwicki arrived at NASCAR, the highest and most expensive level of stock car racing in the United States, with no sponsor, a limited budget, and only a racecar and a borrowed pickup truck. Despite starting with meager equipment and finances, he earned the 1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award over drivers racing for well-funded teams. After Kulwicki won his first race at Phoenix International Raceway, he debuted what would become his trademark "Polish Victory Lap". Kulwicki won the 1992 Winston Cup championship by what was then the closest margin in NASCAR history. He died early in 1993 in a light aircraft accident, and was unable to defend his championship. He has been inducted into numerous racing halls of fame and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. Kulwicki was known for being a perfectionist and doing things his own way. An engineer by trade, his scientific approach to NASCAR racing inspires the way teams are now run. Despite lucrative offers from top car owners, he insisted on driving for his own race team, AK Racing, during most of his NASCAR career. Described by his publicist as "a real hard type of person to get to know", he remained a bachelor throughout his life. Current discussion about how to name San Diego neighborhoods
Hello, Mono! I see that you are a participant in WikiProject:San Diego. There is a discussion currently going on which might be of interest to you. It concerns the naming style for neighborhoods of the city of San Diego. Currently most San Diego neighborhoods are named in the pattern Point Loma, San Diego, California. The primary proposal at the renaming discussion would change that name to Point Loma; the alternate proposal would change it to Point Loma, San Diego. --MelanieN (talk) 16:21, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Article of the month – Auto Club Speedway, a recent good article
Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) is a two-mile (3 km), low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California which has hosted NASCAR racing annually since 1997. The track was also used for open wheel racing events until 2005. The racetrack is located near the former locations of Ontario Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway. The track is currently owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation and is the only track owned by ISC to have naming rights sold. The speedway is served by the nearby Interstate 10 and Interstate 15 freeways as well as a Metrolink station located behind the backstretch.Construction of the track, on the site of the former Kaiser Steel Mill, began in 1995 and was completed in late 1996. The speedway has a grandstand capacity of 91,200 and 28 skyboxes. In 2006, a fanzone was added behind the main grandstand. Lights were added to the speedway in 2004 with the addition of a second annual NASCAR weekend. In 2011 the track will host only one NASCAR weekend. AfC logo
I regret to inform you that your edit to the AfC logo was reverted. This was done for two reasons. First, the Wikipedia logo is copyrighted, and (even if we did get the okay to use the logo there) that would change the license of the AfC image. Second, several people on the IRC remarked that the change looked poor in smaller sizes, such as the templates used at AfC submissions and at people's talk pages. I think a better solution would to create and upload alternate versions using local language lettering for the logo (the way we do for the Wikipedia top banner).

It's kind of annoying because half the people yelling are the same rude people at RfA and the other half just love drama. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 00:04, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Editing project
Hi I'm Aab114 (talk) 13:59, 15 December 2010 (UTC), and my team is cole35, libby8181, Lizz101. We have 6 people total. Were a team of students and we would like to improve the article, "Dictator." How should we start to edit this? Right on the site or is there another option that would be better? Thanks! Aab114 (talk) 13:59, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- Make sure everyone has an account.
- Everyone in the group should try some test edits first, so here's a good way to get that started:
- Go to your own user page: click here for your own.
- Click "edit" to edit your user page.
- Add this code:
[[/sandbox]]
. - Scroll down to the box that says "Edit summary" right above the "Save page" button. In that box, provide an edit summary, which is just a short description of what you edited. You can say "created user page" or something here.
- Then hit the save button. Each person's user page should then have a red link that looks like [[/sandbox]]. Click on that link to go to your personal sandbox.
- You can test wiki-code in your own sandbox—there's a quick cheatsheet for the basic code; you can also use the light-blue toolbar above the edit text box for formatting.
- Go back to your user page when you are done testing in your sandbox. If you forget the link, go to the search bar and type "User:YOUR USERNAME HERE" (using your username, of course). Edit your user page again, and add links to the user pages of everyone else in your group. You can also write "I am part of a school project working on (the article name here)" so people know you're part of a school project in case they're wondering what's going on :)
- When everyone has that set up, you can start a single draft page in someone's sandbox. That way, you can collect information and reorganize material at your own pace but still work on the article with everyone else together. When the article is due, you can copy the text into the live article.
- If you need a review of the current article to see what you need to work on, just ask me. If you have a class plan on what you need to write, you can ask for advice still :)
- If you have any other questions, reply directly below here like this:
::Reply ...
- The colons in the front indent the text so we can easily see who wrote what; the more colons, the more indenting, like
:1 colon ::2 colons :::3 colons
to make
- 1 colon
- 2 colons
- 3 colons
- 2 colons
- Always remember to sign your posts on talk pages (not actual articles) by adding the code
~~~~
at the end (good, you remembered above!) and the thing I must stress over everything else is to communicate. If someone does something to the article that you don't understand, ask them on their talk page, and be sure to check back to see if anyone has left you a message often, every day or every other day. Don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions! Thanks, • 23:30, 15 December 2010 (UTC) (instructions shamefully stolen from fellow editor Fetchcomms)- One more thing: please be careful with your privacy: the most useful piece of advice is never give out any personally identifiable information (name, age, location, school) on Wikipedia – or anywhere else publicly available on the Internet – even to people you know or think you might know in real life. • 23:37, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
AfC
Hey Mono, I would just like to ask you to please get feedback on your changes, I have discussed them with some users on IRC and we would like you to get consensus on all of your changes to AfC. We do appreciate the contributions but there are reasons why some things were the way they were. Thanks. JoeGazz ▲ 14:23, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hey JoeGazz84! I've discussed them on IRC as well—everything was generally well-received. Any changes were done in the spirit of being bold and can be reverted, then discussed if you have a problem. In fact, if you take a look at the AfC talk page, you can see one of my active proposals that is being discussed; the last time I checked, no one objected. If you could be more specific, that would be appreciated. Thanks! Mono (talk) 19:05, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
Article of the month – 2010 Sylvania 300, a recent Good Article
The 2010 Sylvania 300 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held on September 19, 2010, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. The 300 lap race was the twenty-seventh in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as the first race in the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, which ends the season. Clint Bowyer, of the Richard Childress Racing team, won the race, with Denny Hamlin finishing second, and Jamie McMurray third. Pole position driver Brad Keselowski maintained his lead in the first lap, but in the second lap Tony Stewart pulled ahead. Chase for the Sprint Cup participants Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, and Hamlin were in the top ten for most of the race, but in the closing laps all of them suffered spins or other problems. Hamlin was the only one to recover and finish in the top five. With two laps remaining, Tony Stewart was leading the race when he ran out of fuel, giving the lead to Bowyer, who also led the most laps in the race with 176. There were eight cautions and twenty-three lead changes among eight different drivers during the race. The race was Clint Bowyer's first win in the 2010 season, and the third of his career. The result advanced Bowyer to second in the Drivers' Championship, thirty-five points behind Hamlin and ten ahead of Kevin Harvick, but because of a penalty three days after the race, he fell to twelfth in the standings. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, thirty-two points ahead of Toyota and seventy-four ahead of Ford, with nine races remaining in the season. A total of 95,000 people attended the race, while 3.68 million watched it on television. "Grudge"/TCNSV
Maybe I do have a grudge against him. Maybe I don't like the fact that some time back, he looked at every article I'd edited in the last week and tagged them all with QD tags or wrong multiple-issues tags. Maybe I don't like the fact that I can't say good morning to him without him throwing policies at me that are completely inapplicable. Or maybe I just don't like the fact that he recently deleted other users' TP comments from a third user's page (diffs at the ANI). Either way, I think his edits should be restricted in light of these things. Feel free to disagree Purplebackpack89 22:50, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Purplebackpack, I think the best thing would be to simply stay away from him. He should do the same; ignore each other and do different things. If you see that he does something wrong, pretend not to notice and let someone else handle it. But, do whatever you like — just my two cents. Mono (talk) 02:00, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
“ | Before we can create the article, it needs reliable sources to satisfy our criteria for inclusion. If the series been covered in a newspaper, magazine, or something similar, we can create the article, when those references are added. MonoALT (talk) 23:28, 27 December 2010 (UTC) | ” |
— User talk:Mono/Archive 17 |
So the actual books don't count? Heku is a fictional species created by the author solely for the series of books (published books). So how can the books not be used as a reference? There can't be scientific research or exhaustive articles on a species created for a series of fictional novels. Is there a way to still make this page happen? I can't help but liken the heku to Star Trek's Klingons or even Star Wars Wookies. They don't exist for actual scientific research. I have added more web page references though, if that helps. http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Creteloc/Heku
Creteloc (talk) 00:10, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Basically, we need to prove that the article meets Wikipedia's notability standards before we can create the page. Any reviews/coverage of the books in newspapers, magazines, or publications will do this; basically any 'reliable' sources can prove the article is notable. We don't need to verify the content of the books, beyond citing them in a plot summary, perhaps—we need coverage of the series. Take a look at the references section of a good article about a random novel (like this one); notice references to reviews in sources like The New York Times, listings of awards, and similar sources. Mono (talk) 02:07, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
Awww guess I'm SOL. She's a new author and hasn't been feature in any newspapers that I can find, nor has she won any awards. Maybe someday the world will learn. Thanks though :(
ETA I just had a thought... what if the author writes the wiki? How much more reliable can you get? Not sure if she will but I can e-mail.
Creteloc (talk) 14:51, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Cretloc, that would be worse, as one of our core principles is neutrality — it's hard to write about your own books neutrally; also, it still doesn't satisfy our criteria for inclusion. The subjects of articles must be 'famous' or notable to be added to Wikipedia. Sorry about that, but your submission is welcome later, as long as it gets covered. :) Mono (talk) 01:59, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
Help With ManhattanGMAT
Hi Mono, thank you for helping get my ManhattanGMAT article moved to the AFC page. I assume that it was approved because after a few days on the AFC page, the article has now been moved to the mainspace. However, after a few days in mainspace, it quickly got tagged as "may not meet notability guidelines". I was hoping you could help me sort that out; I took great care to have the article reviewed and revised for notability before even moving it into the AFC, so I think it should be OK. Could you point me in the right direction of how to respond to the notability tagging? Thank you! ImTheBombardier (talk) 20:52, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- The tagging was not appropriate; I removed the tag. Mono (talk) 03:27, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
TJ Zizzo page
My name is Brandon Mudd, I'm TJ Zizzo's PR rep and I'm trying to establish a page for him on Wikipedia. Can you let me know what I need to do to ensure the page goes live? Obviously, there are people who are able to put together pages easily, but every time I've tried to put one together, it seems I need clearance from God in triplicate to get it approved. Also, any and all photos that have been or will be put on his page are shot personally by me, so obviously I have the proper clearance. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
- Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for contributing your article. However, I noticed that there is a serious issue with your article. It lacks references to reliable sources (like newspapers, books, and magazines, not blogs or social networks) and may be deleted, as articles without references do not meet our criteria for inclusion. Facts in an article should be backed up by a reference, as this helps keep Wikipedia verifiable. To fix this issue, simply add reliable sources using inline citations (see this guide for information). Click here to learn about what a reliable source is.
Article of the month – 2010 Ford 400
The 2010 Ford 400 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on November 21, 2010 at Homestead Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida. The 267 lap race was the thirty-sixth in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as the final race in the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, which ends the season. The race was won by Carl Edwards for the Roush Fenway Racing team. Jimmie Johnson finished second, and Kevin Harvick clinched third. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead on the first lap to begin the race, as Edwards, who started in the second position on the grid, remained behind him. On the fourth lap, Edwards became the leader of the race. Hamlin, the points leader, before the race, spun sideways early in the race, resulting with damage to his splitter. Afterward on lap 73, Martin Truex, Jr. became the leader, but after the final pit stops Edwards was first. He maintained the lead to win the race, after leading 192 laps. There were ten cautions and 25 lead changes among nine different drivers throughout the course of the race. It was Edwards' second win in the 2010 season, with the other being only one week earlier during the Kobalt Tools 500. Jimmie Johnson won the Drivers' Championship, 39 points ahead of Denny Hamlin. Johnson's team owner, Rick Hendrick won the Owners' Championship, and Chevrolet won the Manufacturer Championship with 261 points, 44 points ahead of Toyota. A total of 67,000 people attended the race, while 5.605 million watched it on television. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Added template for SuggestBot
Hi,
Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.
We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.
We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.
If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 20:43, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Article of the month – 2010 Price Chopper 400, a recent GA
The 2010 Price Chopper 400 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on October 3, 2010 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. The 300 lap race was the twenty-ninth in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The race was also the third event in the ten round Chase for the Sprint Cup competititon , which would concluded the 2010 season. Greg Biffle, of the Roush Fenway Racing team, won the race, with Jimmie Johnson finishing second and Kevin Harvick third. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead on the first lap to begin the race, as Jeff Gordon, who started in the third position on the grid, remained behind him. Twenty-three laps later Jeff Gordon became the leader of the race. After the final pit stops, Paul Menard became the leader of the race, but with less than fifty laps remaining, Biffle passed him. He maintained the first position to lead a total of sixty laps, and to win his second race of the season. There were five cautions and twenty lead changes among twelve different drivers throughout the course of the race. It was Greg Biffle's second win in the 2010 season, and the sixteenth of his career. The result moved Biffle up to eighth in the Drivers' Championship, eighty-five points behind Jimmie Johnson and sixteen ahead of Jeff Burton. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, thirty-seven ahead of Toyota and seventy-seven ahead of Ford, with seven races remaining in the season. A total of 100,000 people attended the race, while 5.25 million watched it on television. IRC chat
Hello, there is an upcoming, very informal discussion on IRC on the freenode channel ##chzzalpha connect (quick webchat link) on the 6th March 2011 at 17:00 UTC concerning ways to improve help over IRC, and other matters relating to Wiki?edia channels in general, but mostly about #wikipedia-en-help.
This is just a friendly, informal chat. Nothing official, no fixed agenda. There is nothing 'secretive' about it - anyone is quite welcome. Some of you had a chat there, the other day. We wanted to invite them to carry on discussions, at a prearranged time - and thought it courteous to ask group contacts and channel founders too. Or if you signed up manually.
If you aren't at all interested, feel free to remove yourself from the names we've spammed this to, which is in User:123Hedgehog456/IRC informal chat users. If you didn't sign up, well, people have been adding loads of names to the list, so someone might have accidentally added your name.
Thank you, Chzz ► and 123Hedgehog456 19:49, 15 February 2011 (UTC).
Message made by Chzz, with help from 123Hedgehog456.
WikiCup 2011 February newsletter
So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.
Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.
Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. IRC invitation
Because I have noticed you commenting at the current RfC regarding Pending Changes, I wanted to invite you to the IRC channel for pending changes. If you are not customarily logged into the IRC, use this link. This under used resource can allow real time discussion at this particularly timely venture of the trial known as Pending Changes. Even if nothing can come from debating points there, at least this invitation is delivered with the best of intentions and good faith expectations. Kind regards. My76Strat 09:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Indefinite break
Sorry to hear about your indefinite wikibreak. Let me say for the Wikipedia community that your 17,271 edits and 1.5 years of contributions have made Wikipedia—the largest English encyclopedia in human history—a better place for readers and editors alike. Thank you.
If you have time, I'd appreciate your input here. Don't forget, you are still lead coordinator for WikiProject Wikify, and if you really do intend to leave indefinitely, well ... Thanks for your comment about the new article. There's actually not a lot of new content, and I feel like it is better presented in a unified iPad article. I've prepared a sandbox of iPad with all the new content merged in; see this diff. I appreciate your enthusiasm about making it a Good Article but I feel like iPad itself needs some serious attention to continue to deserve that distinction, and a merger will get it much-needed attention. With that in mind, would you care to revisit the discussion? HereToHelp (talk to me) 02:46, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- About your edit to the Accessories section: I think that your were overly harsh in deleting the entire paragraph about the adapter; it deserves a mention. Also, the Smart Cover paragraph still reads like an ad. If we can't come to an agreement, I suppose we should funnel our energy into improving the respective articles and then judge the results when we get there. I could be wrong, but I suspect that there is insufficient material to write a decent article on just the iPad 2. HereToHelp (talk to me) 22:23, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
