[edit]Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
[edit]- At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
- To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
- To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

Cai Li Fo and Jeong Yim wiki pages
[edit]Hi Mindspillage, I've sent this exact following message to another admin named Janggeom as well as an admin named Beeblebrox to see if they could help me. I'm not sure if this course of action is appropriate or if it will cause more delays, but I have no idea who to turn to or what exactly to do. I'm trying to resolved a copyright violation issue which were placed on the Cai Li Fo and Jeong Yim wiki pages. This is not correct and I feel it is a reverse copyright issue. I'm trying to figure how what to do by reading the message about removing this block and it says to contact an admin or OTRS agent, so I followed the link and found your name under OTRS volunteers.
- As one of the primary editors of the Cai Li Fo wiki, we ran into a problem. TexasAndroid has put in a copyright block on our wiki page because a site called http://kungfucertificate.com/Bird_Form_Kung_Fu.html copied the wiki text into their website. I was wondering if you can please help us by being an external investigator and help us unblock the Cai Li Fo and Jeong Yim wiki's? I presented some evidence to help show that it was a reverse copyright and discussed it with him on his talk page http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User_talk:TexasAndroid but I don't think much as been done with the investigation yet. A simple view of their source code and examinations of their dead links reveals some evidence that shows that their pages were copied directly from here. The contributors and I have put in a good 2 years of solid editing and verifications to try and conform to all the wiki standards for our wiki pages. When we did things that were not appropriate or incorrectly done, the bots and the admins would come in and tell us the problems. We always took actions to try and correct them. I mentioned to TexasAndroid about looking at the Bird Kung Fu site's source code and path names, as well as demonstrating that the information for all the Chinese Martial Arts listed on that site has been copied directly from Wikipedia, including wiki pages that I did not start. I don't know what else to do, but wait for the investigation to be completed, but their doesn't seem to be any indication when this is going to happen or how long it will take. Is there any proactive things I can do? Thanks! Any help or advice would be appreciated!
- I found another reverse copyright on there site beside the praying mantis pages. Look at their Wing Chun page: http://kungfucertificate.com/Wing_Chun.html and look at the one here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wing_chun Work on the wiki page goes all the way back to 2001. I don't understand why the Cai Li Fo wiki only gets blocked when it is blatantly obvious that the http://kungfucertificate.com/Bird_Form_Kung_Fu.html site is copying from other pages as well.
Can you please help? It would be most appreciated. Please check out TexasAndroid's talk page to see what has been discussed. Huo Xin (talk) 05:13, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Wooooooooooooo! I hereby award you, Kat, this Real Life barnstar, in celebration of your Real Life accomplishments! I am pounding the table with joy, unable to contain myself :-) Sue Gardner (talk) 21:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC) |
- For some reason it amuses me greatly that the particular barnstar in that image came from Kat in the first place. It's much less likely to draw annoying interrogation by airport security while in this form. --Gmaxwell (talk) 05:33, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

The article Squonk Opera has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Wikipedia is not the news, and these guys are not notable, aside from appearing on AGT.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. LHM 03:23, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Identifiable people images
[edit]Hi, I saw you on the OTRS volunteer list and was wondering if you could help direct me to the proper way to show consent from the subject of an image where the person is identifiable. The photographer has sent in an OTRS ticket, and the subject is his wife. He said that his wife knew the image was being used on WP and was happy about it. But an RFC recently closed to remove the image until further consent from the subject could be confirmed. How do I got about doing this? Have the subject write OTRS? Thanks! Your disputes essay
[edit]I have proposed that User:Mindspillage/disputes be elevated to guideline or policy at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Strengthening_civility_rules. Moreover, in order to express my gratitude and appreciation for writing it, I am placing this photograph of a sleeping cuddling kitten here. 67.6.191.142 (talk) 20:55, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- It's brilliant. Closely aligns with moral teachings from many traditions, of course -- you can see it paraphrased in Marcus Aurelius and the Dhammapada -- and of course it will be attacked by those who are skilled with nasty words and clever put-downs, the people who find exercising those weapons gives them a rush of pleasure: the people who care not for any feelings but their own. Those people don't want to see their sharp-edged weapons blunted or taken away, for in the anonymous environment of the internet, their egos have the freest play. (They're also the most fragile, by the way.) I see no hope of it becoming policy: like most ethical teachings, following it can only be an individual choice. All the best, Antandrus (talk) 03:07, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you both for your kind words. It's a good sign, I suppose, that I look at it and see some things I would write differently now, but ultimately I still agree with myself. I do agree that it has no hope of becoming policy; it's not really that kind of document anyhow. I'd be happy if a few people simply read it as one person's opinion and stopped to think for a bit about what they're trying to accomplish. Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 23:31, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
CC 4.0 concern
[edit]I'm not nearly as connected to the non-Wikipedia side of the free use content movement as you are, and have no idea what is and is not happening with Creative Commons 4.0's development, but I wanted to contact you and ask you to bring something up with the appropriate WMF and/or CC people.
In short, it's this: If the WMF adopts 4.0 (or any other license) that requires a large scale modification of our file licenses, there will be massive implementation problems. The file license migration, which was started in 2009, was finished only a few months ago. Only a small handful of users worked on the cases that bots couldn't handlie, and it came down to me and one other user finishing it off in the end. We simply don't have the resources (measured in file workers) to do it quickly. Please make sure that this new license dosen't cause problems for the old licenses.
Thank you,
Sven Manguard Wha? 05:16, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not even sure what "not causing problems" would look like, but that's an entirely separate issue from what the license says, which is going to be the main concern for the next year or so. If there are technical requests you'd like to make in order to make things easier once it becomes clear whether the new license version will be adopted, you are encouraged to make them. Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 05:29, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Non-free rationale for File:Jihadunspun.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Jihadunspun.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:23, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!
This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Dominic·t 01:28, 30 December 2011 (UTC) 1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited. |
