FYI
Since you are on vacation, I have created a new article which I myself have nominated for DYK. Anyway, Happy new year! Jim Carter 09:16, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- Great, congratulations! So that's another Wikipedia skill you have mastered. I see you did a QPQ even though you didn't have to. That's actually a good habit because they always have a backlog. I sometimes drop by DYK and review a nomination or two just because I have a little free time. Happy new year to you too! MelanieN (talk) 17:23, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- I have been credited for five DYKs now. The criteria says QPQ is not needed if one have less than five DYKs to there credit. But yes, now I like to review DYK nominations. Btw Charles DeWitt Watts has been rated as B class by three different editors. Is it possible to make it GA? Thanks, Jim Carter 18:05, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- B class is actually very good for a brand new article. Most of mine have been rated Start or C when they were new. You can certainly nominate it for GA. I don't have ability right now to review the GA criteria and advise you. I will try to do that next week. MelanieN (talk) 18:29, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- I will wait for you. Thank you. Have a nice day! :) Jim Carter 18:57, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Jim Carter: I looked over the GA criteria and I don't see any reason why the Charles DeWitt Watts article wouldn't pass. The reviewer will probably ask you to change or fix a few things, but I think they will be minor and easily fixable. Great work! Meanwhile, I have added links TO this article from a few other articles; I wanted to see more articles listed in the "what links here" tool. --MelanieN (talk) 19:46, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
- I have nominated it for GA. Now we have to wait for a long time as the backlog appears to be huge. Anyway, thank you very much for your help. Jim Carter 08:09, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

2014 was good
and 2015 will be even better, Melanie - so here's just a quiet ‘’all the best’’ to you for 2015 and I hope you’ll continue to be around on Wikipedia for a long time to come.--Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:22, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- Kudpung, Thanks for your thoughtful and personalized message. One way that 2014 was good: I got to be friends with you! I hope 2015 is a great year for you as well. MelanieN (talk) 17:18, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
DYK for Abhishek Bachchan filmography
On 5 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Abhishek Bachchan filmography, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that in the film Paa ("Father"), actor Abhishek Bachchan portrays a father, while his real-life father, actor Amitabh Bachchan, plays the role of his 13-year-old son? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Abhishek Bachchan filmography. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

DYK for History of the Chinese Americans in Seattle
On 5 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article History of the Chinese Americans in Seattle, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that although Chinese immigrants in Seattle were initially welcomed to the area, within a few decades they were the target of anti-Chinese riots? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/History of the Chinese Americans in Seattle. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. About Le Courrier de Floride
« Probable conflict of interest ? » And you think it’s « neutral » Melanie to write such a phrase ? You accuse someone of « probable conflict of interest » without any proof ? Just by reflex ? Is it journalistic ? Is it respecting the freedom of speech to have as first reflex to put some doubt about the neutrality of a journalist, and to propose to delete a page ? http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution
Since when is it a « conflict of interest » to write about yourself or about your creation or company ? Where as it been written that it’s not part of the freedom of speech to speak about yourself or to speak about your creation or company ?
My first reflex as a professional journalist is to be neutral. I’m not publishing my name to make my own advertising, you can erase my name, it’s not a problem. When i put my name, I just do LIKE THE OTHERS DO, to be conform with Wikipedia. This is my first reflex, not to try to put censorship everywhere.
I made a French newspaper in the US for the first time since ??? a very long time. If you think it’s not interesting, then explain us why the other newspapers published in the past are in Wikipedia !? http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/List_of_French-language_newspapers_published_in_the_United_States
Is there so many newspapers created in the US during the last years that the first reflex shouldn’t be to support journalism, but instead to propose to erase the mention of this new newspapers in Wikipedia ?
Someone may study the case, someone may change the text, wiki is done for that. I’m just surprised that some people are just obsessed by censorship or to put some doubt about « neutrality ».
Please check the facts before accusing ; that’s what us, journalists, are obliged to do. And it’s a good rule. G. Gauthier — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.127.100.103 (talk) 14:21, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, M. Gauthier. (Please remember to sign-in to your Wikipedia account before you post; that way we will know it is you.) I'll respond to your comments in a minute, but first: Wikipedia has rules, and it has several processes to make sure that the rules are applied fairly. "Proposing for deletion", as I did, only applies when the deletion is uncontroversial. You have objected; that makes it controversial; so I will remove the "proposed for deletion" tag. Instead, I will take it to a general discussion where other editors can discuss the article, decide if it meets Wikipedia's requirements, and reach a community decision which will be enforced by an Administrator. That process takes a week, and during that week you can improve the article by expanding it and adding more references. You can also comment at the discussion, explaining why you think the subject meets Wikipedia guidelines and the article should stay.
- I'm sorry you were offended by my saying "conflict of interest". But to answer your question "Since when is it a « conflict of interest » to write about yourself or about your creation or company": that very definitely IS a conflict of interest at Wikipedia and it is "strongly discouraged". Please read WP:COI and especially WP:COI#Writing about yourself and your work.
- But Conflict of Interest is not by itself a reason to delete an article. The main reason I proposed deleting this article is that it does not meet our criteria for WP:Notability. What that means is that there has to be evidence that the subject (in this case, your newspaper) has been written ABOUT, by outside, independent, reliable sources. A simple explanation of the guideline is here. Your newspaper is new; I searched but I could not find that any outside source has written anything about it yet. You did supply a link to a notice by the French Consulate, but that is not enough. Notice that even before I proposed it for deletion, someone else had tagged it "The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline." and "This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject, preventing the article from being verifiable and neutral."
- Finally, "freedom of speech" and "censorship" do not apply here. "Freedom of speech" says that the government cannot repress speech. But Wikipedia is not the government; it is a private organization. Wikipedia does not publish everything that anyone cares to write. Wikipedia has standards, as it must have if it is to maintain its usefulness as an encyclopedia. One of those standards is notability.
- I do wish your newspaper well, and if outside sources take note of it and start to write about it, it could be eligible for an article here in the future, even if it gets deleted now. --MelanieN (talk) 15:58, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
There is a conflict of interest if i ask to 50 friends to do it for me ; not if i assume what i'm writing !!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:37f6:4670:2ce7:8b30:f2d8:dca (talk • contribs)
- The discussion about whether to keep the article is here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Le Courrier de Floride. You are welcome to comment there, but be sure to first read the policy pages I linked to above: WP:COI and WP:Notability. --MelanieN (talk) 16:14, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- PLEASE sign in to your account, User:GwendalGauthier, when you comment. Otherwise it is almost impossible to carry on a conversation. Let me explain what has happened here: I proposed your article for deletion, but you objected; that means it cannot be deleted on the basis of a simple proposal. I still think it does not meet Wikipedia's criteria to have an article here, so I have taken it to a general discussion, where other Wikipedia editors, including you, can comment. The decision will be made based on Wikipedia policies, not general arguments, so be sure that you understand the policies I have linked to. And please understand that the decision (whether to keep the article or delete it) is not any kind of value judgment about you or your paper. I have looked at your paper, and it is well written and interesting; I hope it is successful. And even if it is not now notable enough for an article here, it might be in the future - if it gains wider notice from outside sources. --MelanieN (talk) 16:21, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Le Courrier de Floride is most known that 100% of the former local french newspapers in the US which are listed in the wikipedia list. We're having almost 3 millions French-Speaking inhabitants in Florida, it's the third language spoken here after english and spanish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GwendalGauthier (talk • contribs) 16:42, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

AfD to save
Hi. I came across Ika Hügel-Marshall which is up for AfD but a book search reveals a huge amount of sources. Not sure of whether the coverage is significant, but I'm going to see if I can expand it a bit, and if you want to help, that would be great. This might just be another potential AfD -> GA, depending on the level of sourcing I can find. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:43, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, sounds like a very interesting woman! I added a little more about the title of her book; not sure I can help it all the way to GA. Nice rescue on your part! --MelanieN (talk) 18:13, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333: Well, OK, you hooked me. I added some more stuff and some categories. I would like to see a reference link to her book, but I'll let you add it since it's your format. At Amazon I find: the 1998 German version [1], the 2008 translation [2], and an annotated English edition [3]. Not sure how much of that you want to include but if we are going for GA we might as well be thorough. --MelanieN (talk) 18:55, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- Well the first thing we could do is to extend the article 5 times for DYK. When I got hold of it today, it was 689 bytes of text, and now it's 1863 bytes. If we can get it up to 3445 bytes (another 1582, probably another few sentences) that will be enough. I'll see if I dig out some more book or news sources, might need to go to German ones, and get it up there. Then after that, after I've used all the sources I can possibly find and it describes her entire life and influences, I can try for a GA (that's likely to be about 10K of text). Watch this space. And thanks very much for your help so far! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:56, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Let's discuss any further improvements on the article talk page; I have it on my watchlist. You started expanding it today? So the DYK deadline is Jan. 12? --MelanieN (talk) 22:16, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- Wow, that was fast! Great work. --MelanieN (talk) 15:50, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Alfred D. Robinson
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Alfred D. Robinson you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of AmaryllisGardener -- AmaryllisGardener (talk) 15:21, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
Another article
This needs some Copyediting. And I was thinking about a DYK. Jim Carter 15:42, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- I looked through it and did a little copyediting. I also added some categories (you know how I love categories!).
- A suggestion that is more than just copyediting: refocus the lead, so that it is about the things that make her notable - first African American woman to earn a PhD from Harvard; first full-time black professor at George Washington University; historian of the District of Columbia - rather than a repetition of her resumé.
- Nice article, I'm sure it will qualify as a GA with a little work. DYK would be good too; there are some obvious hooks. How about "Did you know... that Letitia Woods Brown was the first African American woman to earn a PhD from Harvard University in history?" --MelanieN (talk) 22:48, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yep. Thanks for adding those cats. Yesterday I left that work as I was feeling sleepy.
- I have added those things to the lead.
- I like the DYK hook. Feel free to nominate it for DYK. I have already nominated it for GA. Thanks for your help! Jim Carter 10:36, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Actually that hook won't work. The references don't support it. Refs 1, 2, and 8 don't mention the claim at all. Ref 3 mentions it but says "unable to substantiate". Ref 7 says "among the first" African American women. If you are already working toward GA let's let the DYK go for now. It will become eligible for DYK all over again, if it is advanced to GA. --MelanieN (talk) 17:30, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oops. I don;t know how did it happened. Look at this, I originally written: "one of the". Anyway, it passed GA. Feel free to nominate now. - About DYK: I've kind of got a lot of my plate for the next seven days. 0;-D Do you want to nominate it yourself? Sorry to hear about your computer; hope it feels better soon! BTW about the RfA: the most recent two commenters said that your sandbox page alone was enough to convince them they should support! Acentrogobius kranjiensis
Today Acentrogobius kranjiensis was submitted as the first article ever by User:Pi-gimjiRu, and after checking Fishbase, ITIS and some other sources, I think this species is not valid, it seems to be a synomym with Drombus kranjiensis, see genus Drombus on wikipedia, http://www.fishbase.se/summary/Drombus-globiceps.html on Fishbase, and http://www.gbif.org/species/106851867 on gbif.org etc. I guess one option is to redirect the article to Drombus kranjiensis, if this is the valid species? What do you think? Dan Koehl (talk) 23:50, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking at this, User:Dan Koehl. With my edit, I was not vouching for the information at all; I was just giving the article a lead sentence per WP:MOS. I will defer to your expertise to determine whether it is a valid name. If this name isn't valid we shouldn't redirect it anywhere; we should delete it.
- We would need to find a reference listing it a species name used somewhere, as well as confirmation that it is an alternate name for the same fish which is the target of the redirect. The only source in the article is in Thai so it's no help. If we can't find some kind of confirmation of this name, the item should be deleted. BTW you suggested it might be a synonym for Drumbus kranjiensis, but according to Wikipedia, the threadfin blue goby is Acentrogobius cyanomos ! What do your sources say about that?
- Let me know what you think. If you feel it is invalid based on your search of references, I will be happy to propose its deletion. --MelanieN (talk) 00:36, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Not sure, Ill ask tomorrow on Wikispecies. At this very moment, I belive its not a valid species, but synonym with Drumbus kranjiensis, and could therefore be redirected there, so we cover all google serach keywords. The populair name threadfin blue goby have no relevance for this species, I think. Ill get back tomorrow, no need to delete yet, but lets make sure we provide accurate info within a couple of days? And I can later fill in the taxobox for the article, so it looks better, in case you dont. see you tomorrow! Dan Koehl (talk) 00:46, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Well, the fact that they listed the wrong common name suggests that NONE of their information can be relied on - maybe not even the existence of the species name. Thanks, and let me know what you find out. --MelanieN (talk) 02:02, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

- Ok, thanks, User:Dan Koehl. They said "neither CoF or Fishbase lists Acentrogobius kranjiensis" Am I interpreting that reply correctly, that they found no record of any such species as Acentrogobius kranjiensis in the standard resources? I'm not an expert in this field so I want to make sure I am understanding correctly. If you agree that was what they were saying, I will request deletion of the article. --MelanieN (talk) 00:35, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

While you're waiting for your mop and bucket to be FedExed, could I interest you in saving Sonia Poulton from AfD? I've done a bit of cleanup, and I think much more can be done to save it - unfortunately her main work has been at the end of journalism that Wikipedia doesn't really like, so I think it'll involve pulling together lots of bits of carefully picked sources. (barring a record-breaking pile-on of opposition with convincing diffs...). Have a look at User:Peridon/links. The top part is the admin dashboard (also obtainable elsewhere of course), and some of the bottom part you won't need, but bits might be handy. Peridon (talk) 12:55, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link. It made my head spin. How long does it take before one is actually conversant with all of that??? --MelanieN (talk) 15:52, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- That's what the links are for - just remember the everyday stuff. The admin school is useful for playing with to begin with. You'll build up your own collection of handy links for the things that aren't easy to find in a hurry. The main problem is remembering to add them after you've found them and hurriedly used them and moved on to something else urgent. 8-) Peridon (talk) 16:32, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Mopped! Congratulations!
- I don't think it's too premature :) Congratulations! Throughly well-deserved! Kind regards Irondome (talk) 15:10, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Congratulations! Aside from a very foolish 'crat close, I think it's pretty safe to say that your RfA succeeded. :) --Biblioworm 15:23, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- If a 'crat closed that as anything other than pass, there'd be the biggest enquiry in the history of Wikipedia... Peridon (talk) 15:48, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Congratulations, I have just closed your RfA as successful and made you an administrator. Take a look at the administrators' how-to guide and the administrators' reading list if you haven't read those already. Also, the practice exercises at the new admin school may be useful. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch on my talk page. WJBscribe (talk) 15:49, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yea!!!!! Peridon (talk) 15:50, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- That was easy! ;) Congratulations, Melanie. 171/5/1 is the most impressive final tally I've seen in a long time. I've no doubt you'll make a great admin (and neither, it seems, does the community!). You know where I ma if you need anything. Once you've got your head round the new buttons, drop me a note and I'll give you some tips and show you some useful bits of Javascript! - Well, well done, Melanie. I only found out about the nomination this morning. I tried to !support, but was reverted because you'd already been appointed! As I said in the failed !support, you are perhaps the ideal Wikipedian. I'm so glad to have worked with you over the years, and look forward to doing so in the future. Congrats! - Congratulations from me as well, Melanie. By the way, I wanted to say how much I liked your answer to Question 5. You make a good point: many new editors are likely driven away because their very first attempt at editing is a new article that promptly gets tossed in the memory hole. More would stay if they started more simply, e.g. making small edits until becoming autoconfirmed. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 16:30, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Something funny
This was the funniest thing I found. :) Jim Carter (from public cyber) 12:37, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I got a kick out of that too. Some people assume that all editors here are male - and 90% of the time they are right. That's why I say, right up top on my userpage, that I am female. To me the funniest thing was reply #53 - and the fact that someone moved it to the "oppose" section because they didn't get the joke. --MelanieN (talk) 15:14, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- I saw it. Mkat is well know for adding oppose (humors) !votes in support section. :p Jim Carter 16:41, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

That was a bad call on my part to tag that userpage. My eyes must have been a little tired. Thanks for reverting. Gaff (talk) 00:36, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Melanie - just wanted to let you know about a new PL neighborhood article I just wrote. I think it may have been the last SD neighborhood without one - at least it was the only redlink in the communities box. There was very little usable info I found outside of the SD police map and the Peninsula community plan (which actually doesn't use the term "Point Loma Heights"). Which makes some sense, as I always considered this part of PL "generic Point Loma". Please take a look and add to it as you are able. Thanks! Dohn joe (talk) 03:50, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- Wow - there used to be a LOT of redlinks in that communities box. Is that your doing, that you have been creating the missing articles? Great work! As for Point Loma Heights, my experience is the same as yours - the term isn't used much. Apparently the planning department and the police use it as a catchall term for areas like Ocean Beach Highlands and the other (I think mostly 1950s) developments in that area. But you have created an excellent article with the sources you have. I'll take a look for more a little later but I suspect you have found what there is to find. --MelanieN (talk) 15:09, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Melanie. I did maybe a dozen or so, mainly in Southeast San Diego and the South Bay. This had been the last one in the box, and it finally got to me enough to go write something! Dohn joe (talk) 16:59, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello! I've been doing some major work on the WP:FD and am looking for some people to help me. I've seen you active on some fire pages and wanted to see if you were interested? Let me know! --Zackmann08 (talk) 23:07, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08: Thanks for the invitation, and glad to see you working in this area. I have mostly just worked on California wildfire articles rather than fire department articles, so I'm not going to join your project. But thanks and good luck! --MelanieN (talk) 23:14, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Blood donors article
would you please help us to upload the content in blood donors of America. There can not be any humanitarian organization which entirely works for the welfare of the community. would you please help us.
thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Febnin (talk • contribs) 03:11, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Febnin, and thanks for your note. Let me explain. I realize that Blood Donors of America is a real organization, and that it is a legitimate charity and does good work. But unfortunately that's not enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. This is an international encyclopedia, and it has to have standards for inclusion; we don't have articles about just everything in the world. One of those standards is that the subject has to be "notable". What that means is that independent, reliable sources like newspapers or journals or news programs have taken note of the organization and have written about it in depth. It's not enough if there are passing mentions (like "The Blood Donors of America will have a blood drive Saturday"); there has to be coverage ABOUT the organization. Things like Facebook or your own website don't count because they are not independent. I did a search, to see if Blood Donors of America has received that kind of coverage, and unfortunately it has not. That means it cannot have an article here.
The article has now been deletedtwicethree times, bytwothree different administrators. If you create it again, it is likely to be deleted again. In fact, if you create it again, we will probably block the title so that nobody can create an article about this any more. You need to accept this and move on. There are many places where you can promote this organization, but Wikipedia is not one of them. Sorry, and thanks for caring! --MelanieN (talk) 15:49, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
