Disambiguation link notification for February 27
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Abdul Qadir, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kadir (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Rootstrikers-related WikiProjects
[edit]Re: your post on my talk page. So far, all I've got is WikiProject_U.S._Congress. WikiProject_Politics and WikiProject_Elections_and_Referendums could also be related. It's not a WikiProject, but Campaign_finance could definitely use some work. (links omitted because the preview was looking way not right) Will Hopkins (talk) 02:47, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Call for research participants
[edit]Dear Mdupont, we are a Croatian team of researchers who are looking at the editing dynamics on different language Wikipedias and are focusing specifically on the topic of Kosovo. We are looking for editors who have participated in editing, or discussing, articles about this topic, and who would be willing to be interviewed for the purpose of this research project. This is a project approved by the Wikimedia Foundations´ Research Committee and you can find more information on this meta-wiki page. Research results will be published under an open access license and your participation would be much appreciated. If you would like to participate you can reach us at our talk page or directly at interwikiresearch@gmail.com and we will set up an interview in a way that best suits your needs. CongLinks
[edit]Your work on External links is appreciated. When you copy from Ballotpedia, remove the nm prefix from the imdb value in CongLinks. Change the wikipedia param to ballot and make sure it works as not all use identical names. Wikipedia doesn't use social media links at all. Use GovLinks for state government offices. Hope that helps. 184.78.81.245 (talk) 20:35, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the update. https://github.com/h4ck3rm1k3/congress-legislators contains the most up to date and best source of data in yaml format (leg currrent.yaml) I am working on a bot to update and check the cong links and other data on my test wiki (rootstrikers.wikia.com) so I wont be updating wikipedia in a while. thanks!
mike James Michael DuPont (talk) 00:22, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- You're certainly entitled to your own opinion on that. I did notice: "thomas: The numeric ID for this legislator on http://thomas.gov and http://beta.congress.gov. The ID is stored as a string with leading zeros preserved" However, beta.congress requires the name in the url, not just the id. As for c-span, I talked to the earlier about using the name vs. id format, and went with the name because of fewer errors. There are still some old ids out there. 184.78.81.245 (talk)
- Ok, I am willing to fix any specific points, just tell me where you found the problems specifically. For thomas you can see an example of its usage on rootstrikers.wikia.com i have autogenerated the conglinks there from the yaml and thomas works as a search. will look into beta.congress.gov, thanks James Michael DuPont (talk) 12:07, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your tip, confirmed that the beta site is not usable without names. Created the new field betaname that you can use with the thomas field. please test. I will run a autoscan of the wikipedia articles with my scripts and look for bad conglinks in the next days. James Michael DuPont (talk) 12:52, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- It turns out that you can use the thomas id like this beta.congress.gov/member/ignore/1460 and just ignore the name. James Michael DuPont (talk) 12:05, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I got the scanner working. git@github.com:h4ck3rm1k3/rootstrikers-wikipedia.git wikipedia_conglinks.py. will remove the nm prefix from imdb in the articles Jim_Inhofe John_McCain Matt_Salmon, if you find any more let me know. James Michael DuPont (talk) 12:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Removing wikipedia field which was copied from ballotpedia, it is not the ballot field from Andy_Barr_(U.S._politician) and Jim_Inhofe let me know if you have any more issues, i have the tools to find and fix them. James Michael DuPont (talk) 12:42, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Who's paying for this project? 184.78.81.245 (talk) 14:20, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Who is asking? you can send me a mail jamesmikedupont@gmail.com and we can talk about that. James Michael DuPont (talk) 23:44, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Wikipedia is not a Soapbox. An attempt must made to describe the topic from a neutral point of view. Biographies of living people in particular must avoid overstatement and claims that rely on guilt by association.
Also, the idea that "we will cover all campaign finance in wikipedia one day" is most likely incorrect, as Wikipedia is not an excessive listings of statistics. --Hirolovesswords (talk) 14:48, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- I disagree, I am working on a project to do just that and one day we will have that in wikipedia. This is not about attacking any one at all, it is about documenting the influence of money in politics. James Michael DuPont (talk) 03:07, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Prizren 1943.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Prizren 1943.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Block of the library
[edit]I apologise for the vandalism of one of my students here: http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=User:Excirial/Content&diff=prev&oldid=613598394 I will have a talk with him next week. we are doing a wikipedia course for teens www.lawrence.lib.ks.us/news-events/events/wiki-warriors-2014-06-05/ and they are learning. last lesson was ruined because the entire ip of the library was blocked and we could not continue. If you look we are working on adding pictures and content to articles in lawrence kansas. Can you please unblock it for next thursday for our next lesson? that would be awesome. thanks mike James Michael DuPont (talk) 23:35, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hiyas Mike,
- I did already remove the autoblock that was present on the IP yesterday, about 30 or so minutes after the block was initially made. I blocked the account for vandalism but from my perspective it sure was an unusual situation: The account seemed to be part of a larger group of about 10 editors who were somehow all new and interrelated to each other. Once i noticed that i wasn't sure if this was something akin to a class project (Which could take flak damage from my block) or a rather oddly operating sock puppeteer so I asked a checkuser to look into that for me. The CU managed to figure out what i couldn't, and pointed me towards the Wiki Warriors page a little while after the block. I removed the autoblock from that IP address as soon as i figured what was going on but unfortunately that was about ~30 minutes after i blocked the account (And 20 minutes past the end time of the library activity mentioned on the library website).
- For a moment i considered forwarding a message that the block was removed, but i did not feel like finding out where the "Chat with a Librarian" option on the website would take me (Quite frankly i figured someone might end up thinking i was some form of prankster if i were to state i was looking for the Wiki Warriors program, stating that i just blocked and unblocked the libraries IP). Aside from the auto block i just unblocked the Bubs92 account as well. Seeing the situation i don't think there is any malicious intent here, just a bit of... well, lets call it an overenthusiastic start of a great editing career. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 00:51, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
- PS: As there are multiple people editing from the library there is always a slight but unfortunate change that the IP gets caught in an autoblock. If that would happen again you might want to drop by on the #wikipedia-en-unblock IRC chat channel to request it to be unblock. The activity is publicly documented and you're a long time editor, so i doubt many people would fuss over a quick unblock if it were ever to be needed. Aside from that may i add on a personal note that i find the Wiki Warriors programs quite the lovely initiative?

[edit]Unspecified source/license for File:Wikiwarrior.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Wikiwarrior.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}}
(to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Students attracting attention from recent changes patrollers
[edit]Hi there,
I've noticed that you're running a class teaching students how to use Wikipedia. I think that's wonderful! However, some of your students are making probably harmless edits to pages in each other's userspaces (such as blanking user talk pages) which are being tagged as vandalism, and showing up with giant red flags (not literally) in recent changes. To experienced editors who aren't familiar with your project, this looks like either a vandal flame war, or possibly sockpuppetry, and I'm sure you know that neither are looked upon very favourably around here. If other editors start to take notice, it's possible that your students' accounts might be blocked for disruptive editing, or your school's IP could be autoblocked (as I see has already happened once).
I see that someone has created a Wikipedian category for your project, Category:Wikipedians taking part in the Wikiwarriors project at the Lawrence Public Library in Kansas, and at a minimum it's probably a good idea to make sure your students' user pages always keep the wikilink to that category so that other editors know what's going on.
Best of luck! Ivanvector (talk) 20:11, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Wikipedia Day Topeka Poster.svg
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:Wikipedia Day Topeka Poster.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Deleted text on Vojsava Kastrioti
[edit]Thanks for the message. This subject has been discussed for years, if we include discussions in Skanderbeg. I am sure you know very well that the Serbian origin of Vojsava is supported by dozens of highly reliable sources. The article should not change every few weeks when a new Albanian user decides to "discuss" everything allover. YOU have to discuss before you delete. Thanks. --Euzen (talk) 17:46, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Rebol open sourced Dec 2012
[edit]Hi James, I was just reading the archive on the Rebol talk page and noticed you once took an interest in helping warn people it was proprietary. Good work, people should have been warned, I did the same whenever I blogged about it. :-) However, I am happy to say that this nagging issue was fixed last year; the reference implementation is open source and protecting the name/brand itself is pretty typical (think Firefox, Chrome); make your own variant just don't call it Rebol, that's par for the course. So I think we don't need the big disclaimer in the first paragraph anymore. It's a language with an Apache 2.0 licensed reference implementation, and a friendlier treatment on Wikipedia is warranted. (Yes, it was way overdue, and opportunities lost in the meantime...but...better late than never?) Feel free to come discuss in the Rebol StackOverflow chat room, we're sort of trying to figure out how to adapt the Internet presence of a kickass language that had been proprietary, but is now being steered by a community that is struggling with little things like... even stopping capitalizing REBOL, for instance. (That's something else, moving the page and doing like with LISP where it is "Lisp (historically LISP)..." -- could use some help. HostileFork (talk)
