Hi! I've noticed you've been brining up a lot of images on peer review that are featured pictures on commons. Unless you are interested in some advance discussion of encyclopedic value, I think it makes sense to nominate commons FPs directly to featured picture candidates. Picture peer review is a very lonely place, and it is honestly easier to give good, constructive feedback on images that are fairly poor than on good images. Thanks for looking through commons FPs for good images to nominate here, though (I assume you're doing that, as you've nominated so many lately), it is a very good service to do.   • Thanks! It's good to know that I'm not being opportunistic or cheap trawling the commons page for FPs. Anyway, I sometimes do nominate directly to the FPC page, but for some (like the bibliothèque pic) I have legitimate concerns. But from now on, I'll be more picky what I put up for peer review. I've amended my vote to neutral, since even in a photo depicting ruins I'm not entirely happy about the cut off Parthenon, but that's no reason to oppose.

Battle of the Gebora copyedit

I like what you've done with the copyedit so far - I had to make one small change, but I wasn't entirely happy with the original text anyway (the barely an hour bit).

I think I see what you're getting at re the switch from Masséna in Portugal to Soult in Spain. I wonder if we can fix that by slightly reordering and rewording the first two paragraphs of Background? Maybe start with the first paragraph having Napoleon sending the dispatches to Soult in Andalusia, ordering him to go to help Masséna, then explaining Masséna's situation (stalled in front of the Lines). Then, second paragraph, go into how Napoleon's orders were based on outdated intelligence, and so Soult decided to go against Badajoz instead. How does that sound to you? And in response to your question, no it does not make any difference whether or not you use templates in the "REVIEW UPDATES" section. However, remember that anything you write in that first section is transcluded by {{LOCEcomplete}} and will appear in the message box on the talk page. Take a look at a live example. Otherwise, I am looking for an expert opinion on the article body -- pretty much the entire of it, as I do plan to nominate it for the FAC process. I too have received personal requests to c/e articles, and agree completely with putting them through the LoCE page, not out of OCD :), but because it helps to show the amount of work that the League editors do, and why we're so backlogged. Might as well give the League credit. Also, it will then be posted for proofreading, which doesn't happen if it's not posted at the League. SPATRA

Hi Wafry,

You seem like someone who has both been a long-time and active member of SPATRA, so I was wondering: Is SPATRA, for all intents and purposes, dead? There are few nominations, no new votes, and translations of the week tend to become translations of the months. I was just wondering, b/c SPATRA is something I'm really interested in and it was quite disappointing to see so little activity in the whole translation dept. in general.

Hi, Malachirality, I wouldn't say I'm a veteran in SPATRA, but it is true that i've collaborated in the most recent translations. I can't really help you much. It is true what you say that there is very little collaboration in the project, even so that I don't know if there are any moderators, leaders or something like that, but as nobody took charge to nominate articles and all those things, i've been doing it lately. I think some people still want to help, because when I promoted Mixtecan languages, I posted it on the user pages of the people who did suppport the nomination and the article was translated in 4-5 days (although thanks to only 2 people, mostly). I don't know, maybe you could write in the Spatra walk page and ask. I will try to collaborate as long as I am not the only one and see if it gets better.

The French project seems to go fine. Hello. I 'lost' the fact that you mentioned with this image from Cassini that it was the 'first' image that they were able to just put the pieces together to form. Then, I lost that fact again when you pointed that out again. I lost this fact due to how much I have been thinking about all of the beautiful images that have appeared from these extra-terrestrial missions and how while poking around I saw that many (if not most) of those images were from image strips glued together with the assistance of software and images (often fuzzy images) from both Voyager and Pioneer. (Not unlike mod-poge or plaster of paris)
What a great puzzle those Saturn images would make! Literally -- the individual images glued (or printed) onto pieces of cardboard.
I always look twice or sometimes I just start out completely disregarding images from the JPL web logs. That is a very sad situation for me. Sadder still for JPL since it only takes a little bit of looking and a whole section of what should have been a respected group and collection of my countries scientists becomes a joke and not a very funny one.
Rotating that non-NASA image is being a challenge. That girl is standing in front of a television and right now, in my attempt, the television has dimensions similar to my computer monitor (1680x1050 I am just expanding it horizontally and I think that the right side vertical edge of the television should be there....). Maybe I should blot out the right side of the image the way the painter blotted out everything below the chest of those presidential portrait paintings. I have no problem with the reconstruction of edges and corners of photographs -- it is not the subject that is being altered or invented.
I was six years old in July of 1969. We had started in school to learn how to read. Everyone in public schools thoughout the United States learned from the same books (the same words, the same pictures, the same fonts). I have a strong feeling that everyone who was alive then will get the same feeling from that photograph as I do. I can hear the photographer "You are going to want to remember this day." and then probably harshly delivered instructions about how to hold the paper. That was before a lot of things and dads yelled more back then.
I am way too emotional about that image to only have a few words about it in a dubious contest. The fact that it is not me and not my mom and not my dad or grandpa or uncle that made this image and how much I love it anyways -- I think that is what makes it a great and encyclopedic image. The 'see spot run' generation is going to be the same about it. It was a media blitz. You can say 'everyone is talking about' something, but in this one case, it was really really mostly the truth. -- carol 20:33, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sure. Post a link or create a user subpage or something and I'll take a look. Also, while it's probably not a good idea to inundate the PPR page, you could always post a few of the best candidates to PPR for a wider range of opinions.   • Oops, I feel dumb. Anyway, I looked over the page and like the general idea, but am a little confused as to what is actually being done. Do you want input/help in picking out the pictures that are already near FP quality, or actual help in editing and fixing images? If more the latter, have you tried the graphics lab? I'm afraid I would be of little help in actually editing images. Also, I noticed there are some images where the biggest problem is an uneditable flaw of the original (usually a size or scan quality issue).   • The graphics lab seems to be set up for a different purpose. Their instructions say they don't clean up photographic artifacts and if the image itself needs work that's usually what's required. Maybe it would be good to touch bases with that WikiProject - you're not the first to mention it. Mainly what I'm doing at this point is sifting through the slush pile for images that seem to have potential. Feel welcome to add, cull, comment, or improve. At any rate, I hope you don't mind what I did; I thought maybe a little organization would give some direction and momentum to your laudable project. The ones included in the new categories are only the ones I like (and I really like some of them) and think may have potential. And of course, it's neither a complete list nor a consensus opinion. I've just scanned through your comments, which I appreciate very much (they are not nonsensical at all, but helpful — so thank you)...I haven't gotten through it too indepthly, and I'm going through some busy crap in real life, so I probably won't be able to edit the article too extensively until I've finished with RL. Meaning, I'll respond what you wrote in correlation to Faramir after I've gone through your review very thoroughly and thoughtfully as I am able and then respond officially on the talk page of that article. I think you have some good points about the organization of sections, but I want to go back and read your comments through carefully after I'm done with the stuff in RL. I just wanted to plead that we were only using Padme Amidala as a model for the organization of the sections. (BTW, could you elaborate on the critical commentary for the pictures part?)   • Keep in mind that wrt the fair use images, it is entirely my own opinion/interpretation, and it might not even be an issue, seeing as the pictures have managed to stay up for so long. However, I believe that under the guidelines, you should only be able to use the images if you are actually commenting on the images themselves. For example, you could discuss specifically Faramir's depiction in the EiBmann illustrations (as either part of lit, part of adaptations, or in a separate section), and compare it to the "canon" descriptions in the text. I think any sort of text that makes a main subject of the illustrations themselves (hence, crit. comm. on the images) would qualify them under fair use. As it is right now, the text doesn't really deal with the EiBmann pics and just more or less uses them to illustrate Faramir in general. I see you copy edit reviewed the DMS article. It was up for FA. I wrote some comments. It failed. It failed much sooner than I thought. I thought there would be some time to fix it. After the shock of seeing sudden failure, I offered to help. I see you have already reviewed it. However, it would be good if you could review it later after it incorporate some ideas I have and copy edit those ideas.

This article has full of potential so it would be sad to see it lose. I also see that it is a GA nominee. I think it's too soon, but if it can pass GA despite not living up to its potential, that's great!

Thanks so much for all your various comments on the ECS article. I've finally gotten round to seriously working on it again. I was curious about your comment on it's FA status page regarding the need for "neutral" citations and have added a query to your comment there. I'm wondering if there were particular aspects of the article where you felt using Stanton's autobiography was problematic, or if it was just a general comment. If there are particular areas where it seems to compromise the neutrality of the article, I'd love to know what they are. Part of the problem, of course, is that scholars have relied heavily on Stanton's writings for their own positions, although, when variance has been found, they have certainly cited this. (See, for instance, the section in the Wikipedia article on slave slaves within the Cady household, something Stanton never mentions in her own writings.) Hey there, It's been a long time but I was wondering if you were free to do a CE for List of Twin Peaks episodes, It's currently up for FLC and one of the reviewers suggested a copy edit of the Episodes section. The Wagner article is in need of some help

We're in a bit of a pickle in the Wagner discussion page. The issues concerns Social class (sociology) and the phrase supposedly common Germanic past and has now been dismissed by some editors as inconsequential. Furthermore, the name Other interpretations in the article dismisses the general review and broader Wagner analysis to a subcategory under Controversies (mainly the topic of anti-Semitism). Please help. Just take fast look and maybe help in the balancing act. Thank you

Hello Malachirality, I notice that you were involved in the project Wikipedia:Spanish Translation of the Week a few years ago. However I also notice that here has been very little activity since 2007. This is a project I'm particularly interested in and would love to see it revived. I've taken the bold step of identifying an article requiring translation and I'm in the process of inviting collaboration. The article History of Puerta del Sol could really use your help. In addition, I'd welcome any ideas you may have to help revive this project so that there is greater collaboration among ES>EN translators on en.Wikipedia. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
