Question from W0lsZcZ4n (09:53, 16 October 2024)

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the offer! I've been wondering for a while now, as I am trying to translate a few articles from English to my native language, but for as far as i see, the non-english articles are somewhat lacking, so I don't really believe that translation is the origin of those. Personally during my everyday use i turn to English article versions due to their vastly more extensive scope, and I'd like to see other language versions closer to those, and I'm wondering why is that not the case, and if there are maybe some legal restrictions that might be causing that. --W0lsZcZ4n (talk) 09:53, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @W0lsZcZ4n, variations in article quality across different language editions may have many causes: differing editorial standards, the number and quality of editors, availability of sources in that language, etc. Legal restrictions may very well be one factor (see Censorship of Wikipedia for past examples), but the Wikimedia Foundation does its best to prevent government institutions from interfering with article content. A recent example was the 2024 Kolkata rape and murder article, where despite the Indian Supreme Court issuing a take down order for the name and photo of the victim, the Foundation deferred to the community RFC instead of forcefully removing the content. Liu1126 (talk) 11:17, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
oh, that's a really good example, it describes the issue well. I'll keep that in mind! Thank you for explanation! W0lsZcZ4n (talk) 10:17, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

How do I change the page name --300000kmoersecond (talk) 14:43, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @300000kmoersecond, since you asked this question from your userpage, I presume you're referring to your userpage's title? If you want to change your username, you can request a rename at Wikipedia:Changing username. If you just want to change your userpage's displayed title without changing your username, you can do so using the {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} magic word (see WP:DISPLAYTITLE for more information; note that this doesn't actually change the page's name, it just changes what is displayed as the title). Hey, I'm just trying to add images that I've already uploaded to wiki commons into my article. Can't seem to do it. --Baldheadedassassin (talk) 10:33, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Baldheadedassassin, please check that you have added all necessary elements of the extended image syntax, including the pipes and the double square brackets. In your first attempt to add an image to your userpage, you only used a single closing square bracket.
On another note in relation to your userpage, please read Wikipedia:Autobiography and the list of acceptable uses of userpages. Excessive autobiographies inside userspace may be deleted under the U5 criterion of speedy deletion. Liu1126 (talk) 11:11, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from IvanTimofeev01 (13:47, 5 November 2024)

[edit]

Can I make a fictional page of a fictional character? --IvanTimofeev01 (talk) 13:47, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @IvanTimofeev01, the determining criteria for whether a subject, fictional or not, deserves an independent article is its notability. To quote the general notability guideline: "A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." So for example, well known fictional characters that have been discussed in numerous sources, like The Doctor, James Bond (literary character), Sherlock Holmes, etc, do have their own articles. Less notable characters that are part of independently notable fictional works may be described in less detail in the article of the fictional work, like the the Main characters section of The Chronicles of Narnia. [edit]

How do I create a wiki page on someone --NLMTA (talk) 14:55, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @NLMTA, a general guide for creating articles is Help:Your first article. For articles about people specifically, a stricter set of rules at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons also apply. You can also determine the notability of the subject using the subject specific notability policy for persons in addition to the general notability guideline. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. Liu1126 (talk) 15:41, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Filmpassion6 (10:47, 13 November 2024)

[edit]

Why is some one trying to attribute the title 'Naidu' to one caste, despite there is a history of more than 1000 years of the title Naidu and several castes are found to be using it??? Why is such editing's with fake information allowed??? --Filmpassion6 (talk) 10:47, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Filmpassion6, can you give a specific example of the issue? Any information on Wikipedia needs to be supported by reliable sources; please check if the current claim in the article is supported by cited reliable sources, and if your counterclaim is also supported by such sources. Additionally, in case you're not aware, caste-related articles are currently under the "South Asian social groups" community-authorised discretionary sanctions regime; please take extra care to follow Wikipedia's various policies and guidelines and any possible page-specific editing restrictions. Liu1126 (talk) 13:14, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Sir, I being a Naidu from Rayalaseema have cited several authentic resources and evidence as links to my edits in the above article 'Naidu'. However, a few miscreants are trying to own it selfishly to their caste are deleting the evidence & links that I have given without even explaining why they are doing so. Therefore, I request you to lock this page from such stupid edits by anonymous, so that the current, genuine info about the info will be displayed & Wikipedia's reliability & trustworthyness will be protected. Filmpassion6 (talk) 19:15, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have partially reverted your last edit to Naidu. You used multiple unreliable sources, including Wikipedia itself, in the second half of your edit. In your second paragraph, asides from the usage of unreliable sources, you also were drawing conclusions from those sources that are not explicitly state, which is considered original research and hence prohibited. Finally, the language in your edit summary amounts to a personal attack on a certain group of people. Repeated or egregious personal attacks may lead to sanctions including blocks or even bans. Otherwise, I have no comment on the content itself, as this is not my primary field of editing. You are encouraged to seek discussion and consensus on the article's talk page. Liu1126 (talk) 20:55, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear sir, please don't mis-understand or judge me, it is not an attack on anyone, it is all about projecting facts and truth. You don't know the plight of our girls who are getting lured and brain washed on this subject of confusion on matrimonial sites, what Naidu means, that, I have come across therefore I have decided to take a stand. You are saying I have cited from unreliable sources this shows your ignorance on the subject and poor knowledge. The problem is this, when you are an admin or an in charge of this page, you can cross check every link I have cited, if not you can write to me, I'll explain pin to pin with all the needed proofs you want. There is nothing like personal attack or spreading of hatred here, it is all about standing for truth. Therefore, this response from me, I have tons of work than fighting with you or anyone to that matter, I have nothing against anyone here, but if someone tries to twist the facts, I'll not let it go, just like that, I'll go to any extent to protect my identity and facts. Question from Rowena96 (18:21, 16 November 2024)

[edit]

Hello, sir/madam how do I create new page for business? --Rowena96 (talk) 18:21, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Rowena96, Help:Your first article is a general guide to creating new pages. Note that articles about businesses and organisations are under a slightly stricter notability guideline called WP:NORG to prevent people from using Wikipedia for advertising and promotion. Additionally, if you are affiliated with this business in any way, you are considered to have a conflict of interest and must follow the rules at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, which chiefly involves disclosing your conflict of interest and refraining from making any substantial edits in articles related to this business. [edit]

I have a question for you: When I register and edit on Wikipedia, I am not logged in with my username, but with the name of an anonymous user (185.213.229.116). Why is this happening? Thank you. Happy editing! --A.Sherzod 96 (talk) 16:14, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @A.Sherzod 96, since you asked this question through the mentorship module (which is only accessible to signed in users) and this edit was attributed to your account, it must mean that you were signed in at least when you asked this question. Have you checked if you were accidentally signed out? A few screenshots may be helpful to diagnose the problem. If the issue persists you may have to file a bug report on Wikimedia's Phabricator. Question from Cocokrispies (16:16, 16 December 2024)

[edit]

Hi, I noticed in the article for The Game Awards that there are multiple claims made in the Background section that are not supported by the content of their references. I've searched for potential other sources to use, but I haven't found any.

Do you have any advice on how to handle the situation? Should I delete the offending sentences, mark them with the failed verification templates, or something else? Thanks for the advice! --Cocokrispies (talk) 16:16, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Cocokrispies, policy regarding the removal of unreferenced material is somewhat vague (possibly intentionally so, to allow for WP:IAR). Technically speaking, all information must be added with reliable sources. However, if the unsourced information gets added anyway, it only "may" be removed, and editors have to make the decision whether it should be removed now, or left there for a bit longer to allow for sources to appear or be found. The only exception is information relating to biographies of living persons: any unreferenced controversial material relating to a BLP must be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion, per WP:BLPRS.
My personal preference is that if the information is not supported by the cited sources but the information sounds reasonable and isn't violating any other policies and there is reason to believe that there are sources that I haven't found or checked properly and it's not related to a biography of a living person, then I would choose to tag with failed verification (or removing the source and tagging with citation needed, if the provided source is completely irrelevant to the article) so that someone more familiar with the topic may be able find proper sources that I missed. This is just my personal opinion; there're many editors who choose to delete such material outright, which is technically more in line with policy. Liu1126 (talk) 17:05, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your thoughts on the matter! I decided to go with marking them with tags for now, with maybe looking more into it if no one else is able to find anything soon. Cocokrispies (talk) 18:35, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I joined Wikipedia because I read this book, which doesn't have a wikipedia page. Do you think it's okay for me to create it? --Sushma1510 (talk) 09:30, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sushma1510, I generally don't recommend very new editors diving straight into article creation (take a look at Wikipedia:Task Center for some more beginner friendly tasks), but if you feel ready, Help:Your first article is a good guide to article creation. The subjects of articles on Wikipedia must satisfy the Notability Guidelines. Specifically, it should have "received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". You should also check Wikipedia:Notability (books), the subject-specific notability guideline for books. Liu1126 (talk) 14:21, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
