list of electronic floras

@Le Deluge: Thanks for your interest in the page List of electronic floras I realise that the New Caledonian site lists both flora and fauna. Nonetheless, it is a useful Flora to refer to and I believe it properly belongs on this list, despite also including fauna. Hence, I have reverted your change. MargaretRDonald (talk) 00:53, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

@MargaretRDonald: Umm, since I haven't edited that page, I think you may have confused me with someone else? Alternatively, this edit of yours was inappropriate as Category:Flora cannot be a subcategory of Category:Electronic Floras, partly because the relationship would be the other way round, and partly because the parent of Category:Electronic Floras would actually be Category:Florae (publication). Also, per WP:REDNOT you shouldn't add categories that don't exist, the rules on red links are different for categories and articles.Le Deluge (talk) 01:00, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

SMALLCAT

I agree that sourcing can be an issue - I've just removed a number of articles from Category:Belizean people of African descent because they were unsourced. However, I disagree that just because a category hasn't been created yet it can never be populated. GiantSnowman 12:59, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: I didn't say "can never be populated" I said "we're probably looking at a WP:SMALLCAT and in general it shouldn't be created". Note the "probably" and "in general" - obviously there will be some cases where the absence of categories is either a systemic bias thing (mainly Africa but also parts of Asia) or due to a change in circumstances - there may have been few notable Germans of Syrian descent in the past but that will change with a million immigrants from Syria. At the same time, you have to use some common sense when it comes to the tiny countries of eg Caribbean/Oceania - Belize has <0.4m inhabitants so its categories will always be on the small side. I'm not saying never create the country categories - but at least stop to think whether you're just creating a WP:SMALLCAT and ask yourself whether a continent category is a better fit.Le Deluge (talk) 13:46, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Date Change on File:George Right Smith.jpg

Hi, I’m curious as to why you changed the date= flag on my oicture from 2001 (when the pic was taken) to 2018 instead. Did you make that change intentionally? I personally took the pic, so I should know what date it was taken. Just curious as to why you changed it. TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 13:49, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

@TadgStirkland401: Hi, yes it's one of those technical things. The expectation is that normally images get uploaded to Wikimedia Commons rather than a single-language Wikipedia, so the tools on Wikipedias can be a bit clunky and unintuitive. In this case the template is expecting the date the image entered the Wikipedia system, rather than the date it was taken. I would urge you to upload to Commons rather than here, as well as being rather better set up for image uploads, it means that all language Wikipedias can "see" the image. Cheers Le Deluge (talk) 15:10, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Le_Deluge, why do you keep removing that category on Hamish Watson. Two different reason on two different days. Why? scope_creep (talk) 09:21, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

I'm trying to find all the people that belong that category. Leave it alone. scope_creep (talk) 09:24, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
@Scope creep: It's nothing personal against you or Watson, I'm just trying to get you to observe the rules. I'm part of the team that is trying to reduce what was a backlog of thousands of red-link categories at Special:WantedCategories and this kind of thing doesn't help us one bit. And since you're a reasonably prolific editor, I'm trying to "teach a man to fish, rather than give a man a fish" IYSWIM - the rules on red-link categories are well established. And at the moment there's no category to leave alone... Le Deluge (talk) 09:28, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Please create it. Your the category editor I have been waiting for. Please create it. scope_creep (talk) 09:30, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Sorry. scope_creep (talk) 09:33, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
@Scope creep: See - that wasn't so difficult? I'm not trying to start a fight, I was just trying to get you over that barrier of category creation being a separate activity done by imaginary "category editors". 98% of the time it's easy enough, you just find a similar category to clone - once you've found that Fellows... category one can look around some of the contents and see that most of them have the equivalent of an Category:American cardiologists category (which I've now added).
However, in general I wouldn't spend too much time on this kind of categorisation, in most cases while it may be prestigious it's not WP:DEFINING as categories should be. The trouble is that some awards do define their recipients - someone like Johnson Beharry is always introduced as "VC-winner Johnson Beharry". The same doesn't apply to a lot of professional recognition, but people have taken the example of eg Nobel Prizes (which I'd suggest are defining) and extended it to awards way down the chain. In general articles only need 3-5 categories, any more and you're getting into WP:OVERCATEGORISATION territory, although some types of articles seem to attract a lot of category cruft. Have a read of WP:OCAWARD and WP:DEFINING, but in general my rule of thumb would be to only categorise by awards and fellowships that would "naturally" get mentioned in the lede of an article. That was part of my thinking with Watson - the fact that the FACC was not even mentioned in his article strongly suggests that it's not WP:DEFINING and so should not be used as a category.Le Deluge (talk) 10:49, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Template

Thank you for letting me know about the deletion of a template I created. Do you happen to remember what date it was created? Best Regards, Barbara   13:20, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

@Barbara (WVS): Woah, that was quick, it was only 5 hours ago!! I'm used to CfD which tends to take months... It was a dummy WikiProject template, "WP TV shows with ruduculous (sic) spellings" or something like that? Think it may have been May but couldn't swear to it - I've been doing a lot of cleaning up on Special:WantedCategories lately. Le Deluge (talk) 14:20, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I rarely impress anyone, so I am flattered. I get brainstorms once in a while and create content that I forget about. I also found that template editors to be more compassionate than other editors-I have no idea why this would be the case. I'm pretty sure the template was created as an adjunct to my humour article in the Signpost. But I don't need it-so thanks for cleaning up after one of my messes. Please come back to my talk page anytime and I'll take a look at wanted categories. Best Regards, Barbara   18:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
@Barbara (WVS): Well it was more the fact that the template got deleted so quickly, I'm used to CfD where deletions take months. As for template editors I think it's natural selection in action - only the most patient people ever get to grips with the sheer weirdness of wiki template code! Cheers. Le Deluge (talk) 11:07, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
@Barbara (WVS): I'm not quite sure what happened, I thought User:Barbara (WVS)/tv template had been deleted, but it seems to have been given a reprieve and relisted for discussion. You created it and edited it on 10 May this year. Le Deluge (talk) 22:45, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
The only thing I regret is that some editors wasted time on this. I weighed in at the discussion and left a comment. Best Regards, Barbara   00:24, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Don't worry about it, just glad to see two more red cats taken off SWC! Le Deluge (talk) 12:38, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Thomas stuff

I'm truly not bothered, promise :) because 'Fight the Right battles' is a key principle and this is purely to increase my knowledge of how Wikipedia works.

First, I created the page for Thomas by copying it from an existing one and editing, so the secondary publisher is used by others. While this specific issue is minor, it is a recurring problem within Wikipedia ie differing opinions by experienced editors on what is and is not 'standard.' Minor example but its a much bigger problem elsewhere eg what constitutes adequate citations. What happens in that instance?

Second, what does 'secondary' mean?' The book was published under a different title in the US; does that matter? I spent a fair amount of time on another book digging out the US publication details, so I'd be happy to avoid that.

Thanks in advance! Robinvp11 (talk) 11:30, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@Robinvp11: No worries, I was aware it was a slightly grey area which is why I gave the extended edit summary. I'm not a book specialist but I do know my way round categories, and WP:CATEGORISATION is worth a read as an overview of the system The key points are that cats should be WP:DEFINING and to avoid WP:OVERCATEGORISATION. A good rule of thumb is that if something is not important enough to mention in the lede of the article, it's not important enough to use as a category. 3-5 categories is a good number, categories are not metatags that are trying to capture every detail.
So taking those general principles into this particular case - are publishers of versions other than the first edition WP:DEFINING? Think about something like The Great Gatsby - is it defined by the fact that Chatto and Windus were the original UK publishers? And what happens about all the other UK publishers - there's been versions in Penguin paperback and many others. And now it's available from Project Gutenberg, it's just a stream of bits that can be freely copied, almost completely divorced from the traditional publishing model. So I'd argue that even the primary publisher is not particularly defining - the interesting bit is the text rather than the retail packaging - but trying to categorise by secondary publishers just starts spiralling out of control.
There's also a deeper issue - Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia, so in theory per WP:GLOBAL what happens in the US or UK is no more important than anywhere else in the world. Once you start categorising by the US publisher, you should equally include the publisher in Malawi or Paraguay. Again, that logic starts to spiral out of control. I wouldn't regard the name change as defining - I'd view it as part of adapting it for foreign readers in the same way as a translation. How important is it to the Harry Potter world that the first book was called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US, compared to Harry Potter à l'École des Sorciers in France?
Finally, there's a specific thing that you were adding a link to a category that didn't exist, which is a no-no per WP:REDNOT, categories are not the same as articles in that respect. You should either create the category when you create the link, change the link to a more general category that does exist (hard in this case), or just not add the category. Hope this helps. PS With you on Masefield! <g> Le Deluge (talk) 12:25, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Categories and references

Hi there. Thank you very much for your help. Would you be able to tell me why more than half of the references were removed? They were added at the suggestion of another editing user, who stated it would be better to add more references. I am a tad confused now. I would appreciate it if you would be able to help me, by indicating what exactly needs to be fixed and what the reason was for the removal of the references. Thanks! Gustaveflaubert (talk) 22:44, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

There was no call for more references. The template states that inline citations--footnotes--are needed, for there are none. There is also some discussion of possible conflict of interest. 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 23:44, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@Gustaveflaubert: I just moved it, I didn't touch the references. Looks like a bot removed one for being on a list of unreliable sources? I did tidy up the categories - you may want to have a read through WP:CATEGORISATION but in short categories aren't metatags, typically you only want 3-5 of the most WP:DEFINING characteristics. And per WP:REDNOT you should only add categories that actually exist, so no red-link categories, and avoid WP:OVERCATEGORISATION. HTH? Le Deluge (talk) 11:16, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
