Category:Roman taxes

If it's very obvious it should be renamed (my bad btw) and i'm the author of it, can I just move it or is that considered bad conduct? Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 23:46, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Once it's in the official rename process then it only confuses things if you try and do things manually. The other advantage is that its saves you work, as the edits to the articles will be done automatically. Just as general advice - you should always add categories to anything you create, not only because it helps people find things (and a lot of automatic maintenance relies on things being in the category hierarchy), but also it gives you an idea what current naming conventions are. Category:Swedish expatriates in Colombia

Hello Le Deluge, you created the above category a week ago, but I think it might be redundant. The two individuals contained within the category are not Swedes who moved to live in Colombia, but Swedes who happened to be born in Colombia and now reside in their native Sweden... so in fact entirely the other way around (and actually, looking at their articles, I am very doubtful whether either of them pass notability for a Wikipedia article anyway). The only other sub-group contained within the category are Swedish ambassadors to Colombia, who aren't really expats. So I think this could go to CfD – what do you think? Richard3120 (talk) 23:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

@Richard3120:I must admit I was looking at it in relation to the ambassadors category, I didn't really look closely at the articles. But it is convention to treat ambassadors as within the expat hierarchy (after all, it's a job abroad regardless of who employs you), so I'm OK with that one. And it's a "proper" category that fits in a well-established hierarchy, so for me that's another reason not to CfD it - personally I think people are a bit too keen to nuke such categories even if they're a bit thin, what happens is that the red-link category patrollers like me end up creating them again in a few months time. So personally I'd leave it. Le Deluge (talk) 11:15, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
OK, no problem – if ambassadors are considered "expats" I'm happy to leave the category... I just thought I'd bring it to your attention. I do think the other two individuals can be removed from this category though, for the reasons I have stated. Richard3120 (talk) 22:25, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Hyderabad

Not at all...mergers of existing categories can still be speedied if they fit one of the speedy criteria. Think of it this way: if you had noticed the old category before creating the new one, then it would have been a straight C2C for concordance with the other city-specific subcategories of Category:Culture by city — so even if you create the new category because you didn't notice the old one, when the reason you didn't notice the old one is mostly because it's not in conformity with its siblings, then it can still be speedied because it still fits the speedy criterion. Hope that helps a bit... Bearcat (talk) 14:48, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

Warning

You must not empty categories before nominating them for speedy deletion as being empty! DuncanHill (talk) 20:04, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

@DuncanHill: There's been such a strong consensus at CfD of late against single-year WP:SMALLCATs that I'd suggest single-article categories of that nature come under WP:SNOWBALL. But just for you, there's a CfD here. Le Deluge (talk) 11:40, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Categorising categories

Hi, short question, is it really necessary to categorize categories? Nothing bad intended here, just want to know exactly the goal of doing it. Thanks. MbahGondrong (talk) 22:48, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

@MbahGondrong: Yes, it's important to how Wikipedia works. That's why there's only 100 without categories out of 10,000's of categories. They're not simple tags like you might use on a blog, as I said in my previous message humans use the category hierarchy to find things, and also the hierarchy is used for a lot of automatic maintenance. this has some more on the advantages of categories. And as I say, the sport season ones are easy to do as you can just clone them from a previous season.Le Deluge (talk) 00:03, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Template:Navseasoncats

Hi Le Deluge

I see you did great work creating Template:Navseasoncats. However, it requires the years to be at the start, so doesn't work for the football club seasons, which all use the format "Fooian football clubs YYYY-YY season", rather than having YYYY at the start as Navseasoncats requires.

Would you be able to use your coding talents to create a variant of this template which would work for the football seasons? There are thousands of sub-categories of Category:Seasons in association football which would benefit from such a template. See for example Category:English football club seasons by year. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:36, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

@BrownHairedGirl: I'll take a look, it should be possible. Can't promise when though, unfortunately I'm superbusy IRL at the moment. Another one I've got half an eye on is improving the navigation for century cats, and also doing a "super-navseasoncats" that does categories as well for the more common category name formats. I see that whilst I've been away you've been doing some good work on Ccirlc for which many thanks, it's come a long way since the 7000-odd it was when I started nibbling away at it! New Category: Statistics in regulatory affairs (Guidances)

Hi Le Deluge,

The creation of "Statistics in regulatory affairs (Guidances)" category was envisaged, because I/we would like to have it associated with the related article "Guidances for statistics in regulatory affairs" for which we have also created a "List" in Wikipedia. The category "Social statistics" is not really appropriate for the article, because the article falls in other domains, such as Medical statistics, Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Therefore, I request to remove the category "Social statistics" and replace it with "Statistics in regulatory affairs (Guidances)". Then both the Article and List can be associated with it. Thank you! Harbajan Chadha-Boreham (talk) 16:39, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

@Harbajan Chadha-Boreham: I don't mind you deleting Category:Social statistics, that's OK, I was just trying to push it closer whilst removing a red-link category per WP:REDNOT. The categories look fine on that article as they are. I'd advise against a Category:Statistics in regulatory affairs (Guidances) as you're trying to match one article too closely, when a good category is rather more general than that, it might have 30-50 articles. I can see a possibility for a Category:Statistics in regulatory affairs kind of category in due course, but there aren't really enough articles to justify it at the moment. Have a read of WP:Categorization and WP:Overcategorization for more detail. Incidentally, the convention here is to post to the bottom of talk pages rather than the top, and you can sign your posts with 4 tildes, ~~~~. Le Deluge (talk) 01:05, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Le Deluge, Thank you for your valuable suggestions. The creation of Category:Statistics in regulatory affairs in due course is a good idea. On the article "Guidances for Statistics in Regulatory Affairs", it has a message on the top "This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (March 2017". Actually, the page already has several Wikipedia in-links. I am not sure what else I can do to make the article "not an orphan". Please suggest what to do and how? Also, please could you kindly help me with making an upfront association between the Wikipedia article "Guidances for Statistics in Regulatory Affairs" and the Wikipedia "List of Guidances for Statistics in Regulatory Affairs". I am involved in both of them in an international collaborative effort. The List is under threat of being deleted! I created an in-link to the article within the List today but I am not sure if this will be sufficient to stop it from being deleted. What else can I do, as merger does not seem appropriate to me?
