Help with Project template?
[edit]Help, what am I doing wrong? I tried a combo of the Beatles and the 0.5 template to do the Comments thing and the category does not appear if a Comments page exists. Here's my template {{WPFirefly}} - I put the sentence that gives the link in the areas where the class is being assigned and then the category include code is near the bottom. I put a comment on this page Talk:Firefly (soundtrack) Oleg said I should ask you for help on this :-) Thanks! plange 17:36, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Let me take a look... To confirm, Talk:Firefly (soundtrack) has comments at Talk:Firefly (soundtrack)/Comments ? Case matters in this stuff, I may have bobbled somehting in my logic. ++Lar: t/c 17:42, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- OK I made some improvements for the categorization but the "see comments" bit isn't quite right. see Talk:Blue_Sun vs Talk:Firefly (soundtrack). the latter is in the category correctly and the former isn't, which is good but the former just says "see comments" instead of "if you were the rater would you please add comments on the ratings"... ++Lar: t/c 18:39, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- All sorted now I think. Please advise if it's not right, or if you need further help. Happy Editing! ++Lar: t/c 18:58, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks a bunch! What did it end up being? I'm really new to the wiki coding stuff (am a coder in real life though) and am finding it hard to find documentation on syntax - still haven't discovered what {{!}} means... Thanks! plange 19:39, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- "{{!}}" means "|" if you are already inside a template invocation and are invoking another, or inside of certain parserfunctions which expect | as a separator for things (like #ifeq: or #ifexists: which uses | for the "if/then/else" separation. The category problem was in fact related to | ... you had no | after the ifexists to say it was the then clause. Try taking a diff to see what I changed if that didn't make sense. This syntax is obscure stuff indeed. I learned most of what I know by trial and error and experimentation, but d m:Magic_words and m:ParserFunctions are very helpful reading. Also play with the stuff I left at the bottom that's commented out, in a sandbox (I have a sandbox version of WPBeatles I play with to get things right before I edit it) Hope that helps... ++Lar: t/c 19:49, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
| ||
|
Preparing articles for inclusion in Wikipedia 1.0.
It was a bit of a struggle to get this month's newsletter done, as we did it without a lead editor. Hopefully, next month you'll jump in and be our lead editor. Big news is that WP:1.0 is coming along nicely and our article classification system has changed to conform to it. If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy! Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 004 – August 2006). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Complete To Do List
Make visible or invisible by clicking Show or Hide, respectively.
As the project is currently just starting, our more experienced editors are working on the project infrastructure, classifying articles, and listing/assessing red links. Your assistance is welcome. If you would prefer to just edit - and why wouldn't you? - we have a choice selection of red links to turn blue and articles to clean! Now let's get busy.
If you complete one of these tasks, please remove it from the list and add your achievement to the project log. |
- Want to help on next month's newsletter? Don't want to receive these in future? Don't want it subst'd next time? – It's all here.

[edit]Hi Lar,
I'll do some tomorrow on the 0-8 shift. I'm a bit busy atm. Blnguyen | rant-line 02:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- excellent, thanks! ++Lar: t/c 02:36, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
There is no consensus to close HRE's RFA.
[edit]As of now, there is still no consensus on Wikipedia (not on IRC) to close HRE's RFA. As I understand it, discussions are going on in the admin channel. Would itbe possible for you to ask someone to just temporarily restore my access so I could join in? NSLE 02:41, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Let's take this to AN/I if we must. There is pretty clear consensus that this RfA should be at least temporarily closed pending resolution. you'll note I've protected the page because I'd rather not see you fall afoul of 3RR. ++Lar: t/c 02:44, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- On that note, Lar, it says "invite only" -does that mean you can let me in, or does Shanel, Jdforrester or Talrias need to change the access? Blnguyen | rant-line 02:44, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- I cannot give access but get on IRC and I'll ask someone else to do it since you're an admin. I will not ask on behalf of a non admin. ++Lar: t/c 02:48, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I'm there as blnguyen.Blnguyen | rant-line 02:51, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Mind you, there are non-admins in that channel. NSLE 02:50, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Not granted by me. Note also that Danny has now asked that this RfA be closed so access at this point may be moot ++Lar: t/c 02:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- As I've asked him to clarify, without a proper announcement on the wiki, I'm not buying that. NSLE 02:55, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- That is unfortunate. You may want to reconsider that position. Basically you're saying the rest of the admins are lying. ++Lar: t/c 02:57, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- I note that you just got a warning from Danny himself, which you reverted. Bad form. ++Lar: t/c 03:10, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- User talk:NSLE/Archive 12. Please do not make baseless accusations and assume good faith. Good day. NSLE 03:15, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- You archived your talk page right after you got a warning? I'd call that a reversion. You've been assuming bad faith on the part of others through this all, insisting that you knew better than the rest of us when we said Danny wanted things done, then removing his warning through a convenient archive. Well the page is OFFICE protected now, just like we said it was going to be. Then to top it off you IRCed me to swear at me? I think you have issues that you're going to need to work through. ++Lar: t/c 03:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
<--- unindent
I don't know why I'm even bothering to reply to this. Archiving my talk page because I am quitting the project is not a reversion. AGF. NSLE 03:21, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- It's just too convenient to do so. And you need to assume good faith too, when others tell you Danny asked for something assume they're telling the truth instead of being obstinate. That's far larger an issue here than your convenient reversion/archiving. I never archive things till they're two weeks old. ++Lar: t/c 03:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]Thanks a lot for your help on my unsigned comments, I was doing them fast and not really paying attention. But, I was wondering, should I go back and change them to my sig, or is that pointless at this point? Thanks. Vint 03:20, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- You want to preserve the date, theoretically, but it's close enough in that you could just re sign and it owuld be fine. Up to you. ++Lar: t/c 04:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. Vint 19:08, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I've just finished writing that section from scratch, having spent a lot of time today sorting out the categories and templates of other WikiProjects :) I'd appreciate a review/edit if you have the time and inclination. Cheers mate. --kingboyk 17:12, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Help wanted re Beatles thingy stuff an all....
[edit]My brane hurts. No, really, it does not want to play - I will stick with the editing and discussions and stuff but the techy side is not what I am on Wiki for. That side is best served by those with an aptitude for it (and bless them, I wouldn't have all the whizzy stuff to do without them/you). However, I did have a look and before my synapses went into meltdown I did notice a possible typo in the second paragraph of Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Beatles/Article_Classification/Migrating; there may be a word or two missing in the second bracketed text. I hope you get the help you need. LessHeard vanU 20:04, 6 July 2006 (UTC) ps. does this mean you got AWB to work?
- We can't - and don't want - to do everything :) If the instructions make it seem difficult, they need to be improved, because it's just a copy and paste job. It's not such a technical thing either: perhaps you don't agree but I think The Beatles articles need a lot of work, and before that can be done we need to know where we stand. It's a very important part of the Project. Without initiatives like this we're just a debating shop! --kingboyk 20:23, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Template, again
[edit]Have a look at this Talk:Italian War of 1521. See how the Military WP include things like old peer reviews in their template? (thereby chucking some other templates off their talk pages). I like... Muchly! --kingboyk 21:16, 6 July 2006 (UTC) PS There's an anti-WikiProject-templates thread on WP:AN but I think it will blow over.
- I'l look at it all later (soon) I did go look and it looks cool... kinda off wiki at the NMRA show for a few days though. ++Lar: t/c 23:31, 6 July 2006 (UTC)... ps, linkie for that AN thing?, I did not see it.

[edit]- Great job to a superstar at DYK! P.S. I know you're on break, but if you get a second, could you check to see if I screwed something up with the update. I probably did; it's been that kind of week... -- Samir धर्म 07:26, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

...shows a disappointing lack of assessment activity. We might have to send out another note, because I for one have no intention of assessing all 600++ articles. --kingboyk 10:59, 8 July 2006 (UTC) PS Regarding the other live issue of the day, could you drop me an email saying what I have to do? I plan to speak to the person in question to get some further info too. Hopefully later today.
- I have no such intention either. Last I checked I didn't see any comment migration either despite asking several editors... so I'm not sure what should be done. The other bit may be too mysterious to decode, I've emailed you. ++Lar: t/c 11:57, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your nice message.[2] I am sorry I have been slow to respond, it has been a busy week. I actually did update DYK once, but I didn't do it quite right and I haven't yet been bold enough to try again. Some day, though, for sure! In the meantime, I am trying to contribute to DYK by feeding in quality new articles, and by improving some of those in the list. BTW, I sent you an e-mail on a different topic. Thanks again for your message and also for your work on DYK in general. Best, Johntex\talk 20:10, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Lar, I believe you should tone down your sarcasm in referring to the above user. I am a little uncomfortable in seeing that he was blocked for accusing somebody of stalking him. I don't even consider that a Personal Attack, much less worthy of a 48 hour block (even with his antecedents). It is true that he was uncivil and aggressive but your sarcasm is no less agressive than his bluntness. I was this close of reverting the block but I decided against, maybe it will calm Tobias down and help overall peace.
FYI, I am watching this exchange between Tobias and several users very closely and I plan to revert any new block that I deem unjustly applied (or unjustly long). I understand that he sometimes may be aggravating, but accusations of votestacking are not very nice and one happens to involve me. I understand why he is feeling frustrated. I chose not to take the votestacking accusation as a personal attack (as pschamp did with the stalking accusation). I hope you are able to take a step back and when Tobias comes back from his block you are both able to tone down this argument and keep it a little more civil.
Thanks, and sorry for the long message. Sebastian Kessel Talk 23:19, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sebastian, WP:SPAM Specifically says, "Wikipedia editors are not to engage in aggressive cross-posting in order to influence votes, discussions, requests for adminship, requests for comment, etc. By internal spamming, we mean cross-posting of messages to a large number of user talk pages, by Wikipedians, in order to promote Wikipedia matters such as elections, disputes, discussions, etc." Now, whatever his intention, that is exactly what Tobias did. The community has determind that is bad form, however, since it appears to be the first time, I assumed good faith and just warned him about this. As for the stalking, there is a very nasty connotation associated with that word, and his repeat use, after being warned, IS a personal attack. There are many, many other personal attacks and untrue accusations Tobias has made about me on his userpage which I have chosen to ignore, but if he cannot control his ire, and reign in his words, he needs not to be editing. If you have an issue with a block, the correct thing to do is to post it on WP:ANI or discuss with the blocking admin rather than to revert out of hand. Certainly I give other admins the courtesy of discussing blocks I have issues with in this manner and I would expect that you would too, as is community custom. Not to mention WP:BLOCK "If you disagree with a block placed by another admin, do not unblock without first contacting the blocking admin and discussing the matter. If the blocking admin is unavailable for comment a discussion on WP:AN/I is recommended instead." I understand if you are upset about the AFD of the Tango article, but disregarding policy because of it would be very bad form. pschemp | talk 00:02, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- See also User talk:pschemp for more discussion of this. ++Lar: t/c 17:00, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Huh?
[edit]At the bottom of the section for July 10, you wrote: "Interesting article, but had taken six already when I got to here. None above here evaluated. ++Lar: t/c 02:34, 14 July 2006 (UTC)". If that's true, then how did the July 13 Lake Washington suggestion made the template without even getting removed from the list? Also, I don't think suggestions from July 9 were eligible on July 14, but that's a minor thing. I'm more interested in why you chose to feature stubby P57. Did something happen I don't know about? - Mgm|(talk) 05:00, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- Lake washington was the oldest article with a picture. everything older had none. We always have a pic, I did some trolling in older articles and did not see any pic candidates (shold have made that clear in the watermark comment I guess). It was still July 13 where I am when I did the update and that suggestion got passed over for no good reason so I took it, it's only a little diff. I don't thinnk P57 was that stubby, I rather liked it as I said. (Nothing happened that I'm aware of, I just liked it). Hope that helps! ++Lar: t/c 11:13, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
