Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]

Dear L Glidewell: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Wikipedians try to follow a strict policy of never biting new users. If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any discussion comment with four tildes (~~~~). The software will automatically convert this into your signature which can be altered in the "Preferences" tab at the top of the screen. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with information. If you need any help just let me know. Once again welcome to Wikipedia, and don't forget to tell us about yourself and be BOLD! KP Botany 21:58, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

The original was: [http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/history/h_multi_sections_and_teasers/Photo_Exhibit_African_American_Senators.htm U.S. Senate: Art & History Home] I changed it to: U.S. Senate: Art & History Home

In the edit box it looks the same, but yours has a carriage return or line feed after the .htm link. Those links will not work with a line feed in them. I just put the cursor in front of U.S. and backspaced until it was right next to the .htm, then hit space ensuring that only one space was there not a line feed and a space. It's a pretty common thing, I think it's happened to me before. --Dual Freq 02:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seattle

[edit]

Don't bite the newcomers, right? About Seattle, actually, it doesn't rain all year. It has two seasons -- rain and no rain. The rain lasts from September or October until March or April. This is Seattle's best kept secret -- the weather is fantastic in the summer. I'm not going to reinstate the statement you deleted, because (as regards my experience with Italy) the summer is mild, not (so very...) hot, and the winter is pretty cold, if above freezing, thereby making the "Mediterranean Climate" label inappropriate (Northern California is Mediterranean). But still. ...Zweifel 06:44, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Illinois

[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! You recently added an external link to external image in Illinois. It has been removed because the link pointed to a non-encyclopedic source.

Per WP:IMAGES Images on external sites can no longer be linked inline due to several reasons: inline linking to images on other sites is often considered "leeching" and is thus rude; allowing online image linking makes it easier for vandals to post images from shock sites; external images are often unreliable and may sometimes be removed by the webmasters.

Please refer to Wikipedia's policy on external links for more information--JoeSmack Talk 02:43, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My response, on JoeSmack's talk page:

Personally, I consider it rather rude of you to respond to my request for an explanation with a vague template. That said, I do not understand why you object to this link. On my browser, it does not appear as an inline image-link. If this is an idiosyncracy of my browser, I ask your forgiveness. Still, I ask you in the future to recognize that not all browsers function in the same way, and that this fact necessitates a more thorough explanation of your choice to revert an editorial change.

Again: I did not make the original change. I reverted your edit because you provided no explanation. Please assume good faith. User:L Glidewell 03:11, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there; im sorry, but linking an image via a link as opposed to trying to lace it in as to be viewed in an article are a hair different, but the template is the same reasoning. It cannot be guaranteed that the image should be use (licensing, a free version in the commons is the way to go) and every time someone clicks the link it leeches their bandwidth all the same. I absolutely assume good faith, understand that not all browsers function in the same way, and sorry if my first response via a template felt crass. My apologies. For these reasons however, I am reverting this link from the article. JoeSmack Talk 03:25, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi--Okay, I understand now. I'd only add that--to my understanding--an "inline image" and a direct link to an image are different things. But, your reasoning makes perfect sense. Thanks for the explanation. Best, User:L Glidewell 03:33, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They are, you're right. Thanks for working this out! :) JoeSmack Talk 03:37, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know 25 words is an arbitrary #. If you posted less than 30 I would edit myself to make it consistent. Note that these 25 words will go into posterity when we archive the votes. Please reedit for length. Use sentence fragments if necessary. TonyTheTiger 01:16, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
