Hi, thanks for helping build prep sets. FYI you put 3 nature hooks in a row. I moved the one with the striking image to the Prep 5 set, and separated the other two. Best, Yoninah (talk) 14:51, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I perform non-admin closures at AfD and RMs regularly. I just wanted to know if there is any way or any tool to track my non-admin closures. Thanks in advance. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 03:26, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Non-admin closure of AfDs
Hi Krishna, and thanks for helping out at AfD. While your closures have been good, I noticed that a lot of them were closed a tad bit prematurely. AfDs are generally allowed to run through a 7-day course unless the result is very obvious. I see that you've been closing discussions a few hours before they hit the 7-day mark. Even though the outcome may seem unanimous, it's a good idea to allow an AfD to stay open for the entire 7-day period. Say for example, you close an AfD at 03:12 (UTC) which is actually scheduled to end at 18:45 (UTC) on the same day, you're closing the discussion 15 hours earlier. That 15 hour period (just an example, and might not need that long) might allow someone to voice a new opinion and might stir the discussion in a different direction, at AfDs that are not (close to) a snowball case. Even I have made early closures but only when a different outcome seemed very unlikely. Nothing wrong with your closures in general but I'd suggest waiting a little longer, unless it's a slam dunk. Closing discussions a few hours late won't hurt anybody. I appreciate your work and you've improved a lot. Keep up the good work. Thanks.CAPTAIN RAJU(T) 10:19, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- @CAPTAIN RAJU: Thanks for clarifying. Acutally as you've said, I'm only closing the discussions before the end period for which the outcome may seem unanimous "keep". But making a note of your comment, I'll make sure that they complete the 7-day period before closure. Thanks again. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 13:21, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I have deprodded Kaura clan, which you prodded, because it has been to AFD twice and therefore can't be prodded. I only did this for procedural reasons and have no opinion one way or the other on the merits of deleting this article. If you still wish to pursue deletion, please feel free to open another AFD. WikiCup 2018
So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? Param Vir Chakra
Hello, KCVelaga. This is a courtesy notice that the copy edit you requested for Param Vir Chakra at the Guild of Copy Editors requests page is now complete. All feedback welcome! – Corinne (talk) 00:24, 20 November 2017 (UTC) |
Hello, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga – I have completed the copy-edit you requested. I found it to be fairly well written – no major problems. There is one sentence I'd like to ask you about, and I'll put that here. I left a few "clarification needed" tags with hidden notes to editors that you can see in Edit Mode. When you have cleared up the issue, you can remove both the tag and the note. Let me know if you have any further questions about those or if I can help with wording a sentence.
In the third paragraph in the Param Vir Chakra#History section, we read the following sentence:
- Coincidentally, the first Param Vir Chakra was awarded to her son-in-law, Lt. Gen. Surinder Nath Sharma's elder brother, Major Somnath Sharma, for his bravery in the Kashmir operations in November 1947.
The problem with this sentence is that you have not yet mentioned Lt. Gen. Surinder Nath Sharma, so readers unfamiliar with Indian history will be puzzled not only by the name itself but also by the reason he is mentioned at all. Is it really important to mention his name here? Wouldn't it be enough to say that the PVC was awarded to the son-in-law of the designer of the medal ("awarded to her son-in-law")? If readers want to know more about the recipient of the award, Major Somnath Sharma, couldn't they read about him elsewhere? If you really feel it is important to mention Lt. Gen. Surinder Nath Sharma, I recommend briefly saying who he was.
Best regards, – Corinne (talk) 00:33, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Corinne: Thanks for c/e. I've corrected the sentence, and clarified at the tags. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 02:38, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

November 2017
Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. When stripping out WP:TANKS, please use an edit summary to explain what you're doing, and why. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:33, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: Hi Andy, thanks for pointing out. Actually this is a bit tedious task. The reason was that the tanks project was merged with WikiProject Military History. So the project template is being removed. Please see the discussion at WT:MHC. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 15:53, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- Please see it under the section titled "Merger completed". --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 15:55, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- The trouble is that this merge wasn't announced anywhere obvious, where the plebians might see it. Then a bunch of unexplained deletions look a lot like simple vandalism (of which we have no shortage). I only realised after seeing a few of these, because I dimly remembered this being discussed months ago. I certainly didn't know it was being actioned.
- Maybe mentioning it on your talk page would help? At least that's an obvious place that other editors seeing these changes would look at first? Andy Dingley (talk) 16:26, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: Thank You. So, from what I understand, do you suggest me to declare the merger somewhere where most of the editors could know of it? If yes, where would it be the best to declare it? --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 03:02, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: Hi Andy, awaiting for your reply. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 09:44, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry, hadn't noticed your reply.
- What's the problem here? That an editor rapidly removing the same thing is hard to tell from vandalism (most of the affected pages are on my watchlist, most of my editing is based on looking at my watchlist). So there needs to be some message, in a place where other editors see it, that explains what's going on. Every edit summary is too much to ask (but sometimes you can paste something in). So I think either an edit summary at the start and every handful of edits, or maybe a comment on your talk. Putting a comment on the project page "I'm going to go and fix this issue now" would be good too, but not so many editors would see that. If I'm concerned about an editor's changes, the first place I'd look would be their contribs history, then their talk. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:53, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Removal of Awards and Decorations Bestowed Upon Sanjay Kumar
Hi! I noticed that you removed the awards and decorations that I added on Naib Subhedar Sanjay Kumar's page. The explanation you gave merely said, 'Not needed.' Can you please let me know why you feel that awards and decorations do not belong on this page? Very curious to hear why you think so. Thanks! VP101 (talk) 20:26, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- @VP101: Thanks for reaching out. The primary reason is that the entire section is unreferenced. Especially, I am developing the article for Good article assessment, so this material is not accepted at Good article nomination review. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 03:12, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- My reference was video where Nair Subhedar Sanjay Kumar is wearing ribbons and based on that, I added the awards and decorations bestowed upon him. I do think that realistically, there is no way to ascertain certain kinds of service medals awarded since these records are not in the public domain; for example, 9 year service ribbon or high altitude service ribbon. The exceptions are of course awards presented by the President of India - PVC, AC, SYSM, PVSM, MVC, KC, UYSM, AVSM, VrC, SC, YSM, SM, NM, VM, VSM. I totally agree with you that we need to have strong references for anything on Wikipedia. My point is, you aren't going to get it for every single medal worn by soldiers since many of them are not shared in the public domain. The only way I have found a way to do this is to look at the ribbons worn by individuals and add ribbons based on that. Additionally, there is a strict code of conduct pertaining to the order in which they are worn and hence, images of officers and soldiers wearing them should be used as references for adding ribbons worn. Where these are discrepancies, such as [[2]], I always make a point to start a conversation on the talk page. The great thing is, more number of people are taking an interest in pages pertaining to the Indian Military Community and the more voices we have here, the better content we can present. VP101 (talk) 10:31, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- @VP101: As you said we can't get information for each and every single medal, in that case we shouldn't present it. Wikipedia doesn't publish original research. Also videos can be used as sources for the text, like, from the above mentioned video, you can use it to write about the battle or the war described by him, but not taking a snap a video and using that as source. Also images are not valid sources, it is not acceptable to use an image as a source. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 11:12, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- I appreciate the conundrum we find ourselves in. All I am saying is, we have a long and difficult road ahead if we are to look for a citation to support each and every medal awarded to an officer. We may have to delete the awards and decorations section from pretty much every single page concerning a military figure. VP101 (talk) 18:22, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- @VP101: May be, if that is the case, we have to remove. Also I want to make it clear that this practice may not objected while it is a general article, but if you're taking it for GA, A-class, or FA assessment, you've to provide a reliable source or just remove it. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 02:59, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. New Page Reviewer Newsletter
Backlog update:
- The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
- Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!
Outreach and Invitations:
- If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with:
{{subst:NPR invite}}
. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.
New Year New Page Review Drive
- A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
- Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.
General project update:
- ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
- The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
- To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Indian Navy and OTRS
Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, if I remember correctly, you were instrumental in getting the OTRS from the Indian Navy and creating the license for the same on Wikimedia. I had a few questions regarding this:
- Does the OTRS also cover images on Twitter from the official Indian Navy handle? In the past images from social media have been deleted from Wikimedia but IMO the OTRS should extend to the images released there by the Navy.
- Did you make a similar effort for the Indian Army/Indian Air Force or is there one that you are aware of that we can pursue? I remember there was a major discussion on one of the images and that resulted into Indian Army and Air Force images being deleted.
Thanks. Adamgerber80 (talk) 18:35, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Adamgerber80: Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the delay. As I was out of the town, I couldn't reply. Addressing your queries:
- No, the OTRS permission given by the Indian Navy doesn't cover the images on its official Twitter or any other social channels. I just allows use of images that are published on indiannavy.nic.in
- I did make some efforts for the other two forces as well, but did not get a positive reply. However, I'll restart the efforts and try to get the job done.

New Years new page backlog drive
Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!
We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!
The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.
Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:
- The total number of reviews completed for the month.
- The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.
NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution
In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. DYK for Gurbachan Singh Salaria
On 14 February 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Gurbachan Singh Salaria, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Captain G. S. Salaria is the only United Nations peacekeeper to have been awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest wartime military decoration? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Gurbachan Singh Salaria. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Gurbachan Singh Salaria), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Dhan Singh Thapa
Hi. I was reading this article and noticed 2 grammatical errors in the first 3 sentences of the lead. As I do some work with the Military History Project I had a look at how they had graded it. They had assessed it as not meeting the B class criteria for grammar. On a quick skim it still doesn't. I also notice that you are nominating it for Good Article status; an article of this status certainly should be GA. But I suspect that you will struggle until the grammar issue is resolved. Can I suggest that you pass it to the experts?
Post a request for a copy edit with the Guild of Copy Editors. As you can see, many editors do this prior to submitting their articles for GA, A class or FA status. They would be happy to review the grammar and several other potential issues.
I hope that this helps. Gog the Mild (talk) 12:02, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Gog the Mild: Thanks for the advice. Posted as request. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 12:20, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- As I know that you are in a hurry I have picked this one up myself; sometimes requests can take 2-3 weeks and you could be in your GA assessment any day. I have had a first skim through. Do let know if I have changed anything you don't like. Or just change it back - this is Wikipedia. There are also a couple of queries on the talk page. Recommending new editors to your WP India
Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga,
Our system generated a list of potential new editors for your project. They may be interested in collaborating with your project members on your project's articles. As you will notice, the list contains both experienced editors and newcomers. Both are valuable for Wikipedia and your project. Please go ahead and introduce your project to them, and point them to some project tasks to start with. We also provide a template invitation message to make it easier to contact the potential new editors. Just click the invite link to write the invitation message.
We'd appreciate it if you could fill the survey to let us know what you think about our recommendations so we can improve our system.

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.
Our top scorers in round 1 were:
- Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
- FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
- Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
- Ceranthor, Numerounovedant, Carbrera, Farang Rak Tham and Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

New Page Review Newsletter No.10
ACTRIAL:
- ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.
Paid editing
- Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.
Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?
Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled
- While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.
News
- The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

- On a side-note, whilst accepting Kochi Metro Rail Limited and EVidyaloka was good enough, I guess some important advice about the writing-style, contents etc. ought to be imparted to the creators, from your end.~ Winged BladesGodric 05:36, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Winged Blades of Godric: Thanks for pointing out these. Article on Ian Cardozo has NPOV violations, but I'll try fixing them soon. Regarding Bisauri, I don't find any NPOV issues. However, the writing style of the articles needs to be improved. I'll consider your suggestions. Thank you. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 07:41, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
- Err....but, how does a single edit aadding non-nesessary superfluous fluff of 800 bytes makes it eligible to be considered, under the purview of the programme? I'm not even going into the writing issues etc.~ Winged BladesGodric 07:48, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
- And, if you find this state of an article suitable enough to be accepted, well.....Usually, these types of sourceless & dump-everything-you-know-edits are reverted on sight and I was kind enough, to extend the courtesy of fixing parts of it. ~ Winged BladesGodric 07:54, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

- @Winged Blades of Godric: I've already removed them from consideration after your first message. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 07:56, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
