Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to It's My Party (Lesley Gore song) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New REFBot

There is a proposal on Wikipedia:Bot requests#New REFBot for a new REFBot working as DPL bot and BracketBot do. I beg politely for consideration. Please leave a comment if you wish. Maybe you could work on it like you did it with other projects? That would be fine. Thanks a lot in anticipation. -- Frze (talk · contribs) 10:29, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

SVG variables

Hi Jarry. I saw that you uploaded this image with embedded German translations. Do you by any chance know whether there are other variables and/or will we be able to set custom variables within SVG files? Thanks. -- Edinwiki (talk) 12:44, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Edinwiki. This system for German translations relies only on the systemLanguage variable, which is defined in the SVG spec and supported by ImageMagick. If you were looking for general custom variable support, I'm afraid you may be a little disappointed. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 15:43, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) The basic structure is:
<switch>
  <text systemLanguage="de">
    <tspan>Grun</tspan>
  </text>
  <text>
    <tspan>Green</tspan>
  </text>
</switch>
Of course that won't work without a whole bunch of other attributes, for positioning, styling etc. but you should get the general idea. See WP:VPT#Tech News: 2013-42, the <switch> element and the systemLanguage attribute. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:53, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Finally, the judges are awarding Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) the Geography Barnstar for her work on sea, now a featured article. This top-importance article was the highest-scoring this year; when it was promoted to FA status, Cwmhiraeth could claim 720 points.

Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Heraldry template

Hi, I noticed that you had been involved with the Heraldry by country template before at http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Heraldry_and_vexillology/Heraldry_by_country

I've had a bit of a disagreement over it, should the template be redesigned to make it more flexible? The person is saying the article Cornish heraldry shouldn't be on there as it's not a country, just a region "like Flanders or Wallonia" but hasn't removed Frisia from the list.

see here http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Template_talk:Heraldry_by_country#Cornwall

m:MassMessage being deployed Nov 14th

Hi!

m:MassMessage is the MediaWiki replacement for user:EdwardsBot, which I know the Signpost uses. I believe MZMcBride is planning on shutting off the bot and global message delivery when it goes live. I currently have an API module pending review at gerrit:87311 (docs), could you check that it would meet your needs? The API module won't make it in with the initial deployment, so Ed will probably need to deliver it manually for a week.

Unsalt please

You salted the article "Forced Entertainment", but it seems as if in the time between salting that the AFC has finally met the GNG requirement and I believe it should be created. It has numerous small sources, one dedicated book source and history spanning two decades. I noticed it when I went to pass it at AFC. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 11:55, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Second the request for unsalt, the article meets GNG. -- Green Cardamom (talk) 19:10, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

svgtranslate wanted in Tool Labs

Hi Jarry1250! I was asking some toolserver users about their favourite tools. Your svgtranslate was mentioned in that context. :) I see you are already active in Tool Labs. What's your plan about migrating svgtranslate? Do you know why it's broken on toolserver? If you need support to get the work done, please poke me! Silke WMDE (talk) 08:54, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi

Richard N from the WMUK office tells me you sorted out their calendar so you can download an iCal version which is really great, I tried adding the web version of the calendar to my Google mail but it says Could not fetch the URL because robots.txt prevents us from crawling the URL. Do you know who could fix this?

Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!

Hello Jarry1250, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! 2014 WikiCup

Hi Harry/Jarry; is the bot ready for the 2014 WikiCup? There have been some rules changes- featured portals are now worth 45 points, and old DYKs (which is articles created in 2008 or earlier, not 2007 or earlier as it was last year) are now awarded 5 bonus points. The other changes shouldn't affect the bot. Thanks! J Milburn (talk) 19:51, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the fixes at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant5. I was doing it manually and I've really not go the hang of my new laptop yet... I don't think I've got a career in data entry ahead of me... J Milburn (talk) 14:30, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Me again! For whatever reason, the bot seems to be listing everything multiple times on the submission page. Would you be able to tell it to list each entry only once? (Obviously, if something is placed on multiple submission pages, or something is put back after being taken off, that would be useful to know.) Thanks! J Milburn (talk) 19:24, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Unsalting a page

Hello, I noticed you were the last person who protected Young Thug against creation. The article has been salted due to repeated recreation between 2006 and 2007. However, currently there is a notable musician, going by that name, and I could create a proper article about him, if you unsalt it. Media coverage includes multiple articles in XXL, Complex, Vibe, Pitchfork Media, Rolling Stone, and The Source among others. His 2013 songs and mixtape are also featured in a number of year-end lists: Rolling Stone:[1], [2], Complex:[3], Spin:[4], Pitchfork: [5], FACT: [6], Vice: [7] and even The Guardian: [8]. In addition, the page has constantly been on the WP:TOPRED for the last few months. 2Flows (talk) 00:43, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

(2Flows) Done. (I was in favour of unsalting pages like these at the time, so I'm not really the person to ask, but tracking a better person down would take a while and they probably wouldn't still be active.) - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 21:02, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

SVGCheck

I see that SVGCheck on WMFlabs can now properly render Traditional Chinese but not Simplified Chinese. Also the font is still different than those installed on Wikimedia. Is there any technical difficulty that WMFlabs can not have the exact same set of typefaces? Sorry for my ignorance of how WMFlabs/Toolserver works. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 08:52, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

I think it's just a case of someone installing the extra fonts (bug #58740), which is not trivially easy but not too difficult either. Sorry for the inconvenience. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 10:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup multipliers

Hi Harry- sorry for constantly badgering you about bot tweaks, but the bot got it wrong here. Basically, it should be checking for interwikis from before the start of the year (see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring#Bonus points), precisely to stop this sort of thing- all of the articles on other Wikipedias were created this year (and by the user who wrote the enwp article). Is this something you'd be able to fix easily? J Milburn (talk) 19:43, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

To be specific, I didn't write the article, I just expanded it. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 19:58, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
J Milburn The C of E Okay, should be fixed. Apparently the MediaWiki API gives you *current* Wikidata interwikis, even if you request the interwikis of a page in the past (a bit like how when you browse history you still get the current version of the template). The easiest fix, which I have implemented, is to assume all articles on en.wp get their interwikis via Wikidata these days, and if there are any problems (e.g. cases where manual interwikis are still used) people will come forward. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 00:24, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
({U|J Milburn}}) Gah, every time I post a fix I accidentally delete the internal log, resulting in this. Sorry JM! - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 17:52, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Old mail on Tools

On Tools, your tool accounts jarry-common, svgcheck and wikicup have 509, 98 and 32 mails respectively still in storage from when mail wasn't immediately forwarded to the maintainers' addresses. All mails are from March 14th or earlier, most of them being of the types "Your job 8785 ('lister') has been submitted" or "rm: cannot remove `/data/project/svgcheck/public_html/permatemp/*': No such file or directory".

  1. I could respool those, which means that 509 + 98 + 32 = 639 mails are delivered to your mail address.
  2. You could log into Tools, become jarry-common/become svgcheck/become wikicup and use mail or another command-line mail client to read/delete these messages.
  3. I could move those mailboxes to your tools' home directories and you could view, edit or delete them there.

Do you have any preference?

Also, I subscribed you to a bug about nested service groups that probably affects your setup on Tools. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 02:52, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. Script maintenance issue

Hello, there is a very useful script whose creator has disappeared that I would like your assistance with. The script is converting a string within an image name, namely "Boeing 777-200ER Malaysia AL (MAS) 9M-MRO - MSN 28420 404 (9272090094).jpg". Could I ask you to have a look and see if such strings, as used at Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, can be protected? Thanks, -- Ohc ¡digame! 09:37, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Ohconfucius:. Looking at the code, I think what confuses the script is the HTML comment after the filename. I've attempted to fix this but I'm not a regular user of the script. Can you verify? You may need to hard refresh. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 14:24, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
Seems to have cured it, thanks. -- Ohc ¡digame! 14:30, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to ask for your help with the script once again. This time, it's {{Baseballstats}} that needs protection. The problem caused can be seen from this revert – three successive hyphens between two letters causes the script to convert to an emdash. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 01:16, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure there's an obvious way for the script to decide (in the general case) if it should "fix" those hyphens or leave them. But you could try using <!-- hyphen --> as a manual way of fixing the script on that article. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 20:07, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. SVG check

Hi - I am a fanatic user of your tool. But by today something is wrong with it. It won't accept my SVG files anymore which the File:Test.svg perfectly shows. I am sure you will take care. --Maxxl2 (talk) 09:24, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Hey Maxxl, nice to hear, can you give please an example? Oh yes I see now, also my file can't anymore rendered.

That file doesn't appear to be an SVG file.

But this error also appears strangely if your browser are not linked to SVG (what is not the case here) -- πϵρήλιο 14:16, 16 May 2014 (UTC) -- πϵρήλιο 14:43, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
As Maxxl2 reporting, it's again working. -- πϵρήλιο 07:38, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

SP on mobiles

Jarry, Ed saw this, which looks worth acting on. Any tips? Tony (talk) 04:39, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Heh, I was writing an email, but Tony beat me to the punch. I suspect it's the use of 33% in the columns, which is fine for a wide browser and possibly the worst idea alive for mobile, something I'd never thought about before (I don't own a smartphone...). Is there a way to make the page mobile-responsive? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:47, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Nothing easy, I suspect. The immediate advice is to flip your mobile into landscape mode, it's not quite as painful. I'll have a think once exams are over; remind me in a couple of weeks. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 18:43, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks, Jarry. I'll send a reminder soon. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:43, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I'm sure we've seen each other around the Wiki but haven't directly communicated. I found you had a hand in bringing this article to FA status; after reading the latest version, I have some serious concerns about this article that I'd like to discuss with someone having an interest in it. I'd rather see the problems addressed & fixed rather than take it to WP:FAR & perhaps have it downgraded. -- llywrch (talk) 05:54, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

@Llywrch: Sure, go ahead (article talk page?). It's only drifted slightly since the FA version, I think, though I was not 100% happy with the version that did pass. (I have exams for the next fortnight, but I promise to respond at length afterwards, if that's acceptable.) Best, - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 18:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

SVG check

I just tried the SVG check tool for the first time, just to see how faithfully it rendered what Wikimedia is going to do. Sadly, it failed on the very first file that I tried, File:Mechanical filter resonator modes.svg. The bottom two disc shaped resonators were both missing their sides in the tool rendering. However, they are shown correctly on both my local version (displayed in Inkscape) and the uploaded version displayed by Wikimedia (both the Wikipedia and Commons versions). SpinningSpark 16:36, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I've just enquired on IRC and it's definitely the same version of the renderer, so I'm not sure what's going on... - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 19:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I checked your SVG source and the problem is with the matrices of "linearGradient5961" and "linearGradient6007" that you translated the actual position from the intended (8808.751,2453.392) to (88082.751,24533.392). But the problem with SVG Check is that it seems to have ignored the spreadMethod="reflect" attribute of linearGradient. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 01:54, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea what you are talking about (well only vaguely) but am willing to take it on good faith that I am to blame for it. However, I am not to blame for the tool rendering it differently to Wikimedia, that is the very thing it is supposed not to do. Nearly all the gradients use spreadMethod="reflect", not just the problem ones, and neither of the problem ones use linearGradient5961. SpinningSpark 09:19, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
SVG can be accessed using XML editor as well which is my preferred way over Inkscape due to the SVG files created by Inkscape tend to have poor/unexpected results on other software. In your SVG, the offset of the problematic linearGradient definitions had been moved far far away (for over 20000 px) from the intended position by "gradientTransform" attribute which is a bad practice even if the spreadMethod="reflect" is in effect. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 11:00, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
I know perfectly well that files can be edited in an XML editor, that's how I checked the ids, but if you are saying that I must produce artwork in XML and not in Inkscape then I will probably just render everything as png in the future and avoid all the many problems of incorrect rendering. It's fine creating a few boxes in XML, but complex artwork needs a higher level tool altogether. SpinningSpark 17:29, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
The point stands that the rendering should be the same, and in truth I have no idea why it is not. Do the text areas render the same in SVGCheck vs. Wikimedia? - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 16:42, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
No, the fonts are definitely different. They are very similar but it can be spotted, for instance, on the lower-case r which is rather more arched in Wikimedia than the tool. SpinningSpark 17:29, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Likely falls back to Helvetica Nimbus Sans L. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 23:06, 8 June 2014 (UTC) 04:49, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Okay, well I can definitely do something about the font issue... - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 15:25, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Well, that I've said for over a year.User: Perhelion     08:35, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Also the English serif fonts such as Liberation Serif, Times and Georgia generally fall back to an ugly fat sans-serif font if not defined specifically as "Nimbus Roman No9 L". -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 01:21, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I've let some criticism on meta:SVG fonts on this behavior, sorry. Maybe we should also made a section there for the fallback behavior (for some fonts). And also we should not only remove long-time present fonts (we should put this all together in this fallback section, for example also never installed fonts like Arial). This would be exact the information that not only Jarry1250 needed.User: Perhelion     11:57, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Another small improvement suggestion: could you please add accept="image/svg" to the upload button. This would save time in selecting and mistakes during upload. RegardsUser: Perhelion     08:18, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Precious again

complex person
Thank you for presenting a complex person in history like Vidkun Quisling, voicing well both the praise of his supporters ("a conscientious administrator of the highest order, knowledgeable and with an eye for detail. ... balanced and gentle to a fault, a leader who cared deeply about his people and maintained high moral standards throughout") and the criticism of his opponents ("unstable and undisciplined, abrupt, even threatening"), continuing "Quite possibly he was both", - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

SVG Translate

Greetings Jarry,

I know you have not much time, but let ask something. What did you to plan with your useful tool SVG Translate? Will there be any fix/update in future? Best regardsUser: Perhelion     15:44, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Can you answer guy? PS: Sorry is something wrong with me or with you?User: Perhelion   15:23, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, yes, I hope to have a look at it soon, though my focus will be on updating the TranslateSvg extension and/or getting that deployed. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 21:58, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

CIDR range contributions

Are you going to / have you already migrated the CIDR range contributions tool to Labs. Just saw the warning on the tool that the toolserver is imminently closing down. SpinningSpark 00:39, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

There's already a tool for en.wp available at http://tools.wmflabs.org/rangecontrib/ . I've asked if I can co-maintain it . - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 12:51, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the link Jarry, but that tool is not working for me, the server just does not respond (although I can get the Labs homepage ok). SpinningSpark 15:57, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Let me clarify that, the tool form comes up, but it never responds to the request and eventually times out. SpinningSpark 16:01, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Well I'll chase up the author. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 08:45, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
There's another tool at https://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools/rangecontribs/ that works just fine (although I still think that your tool is simpler and cleaner). SpinningSpark 00:32, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Templatecount for a list of templates

  • I came across your tool at [11] and found it very useful. Is it possible to get counts for a list of templates? I was interested in following the growth of selected templates over time. I wanted to get counts of selected templates, say once a week, and plot them. I am interested in templates like WikiProject_Biography, coord, Authority control, infobox scientist, surname, cite book, infobox college, infobox person, infobox settlement, country data *, -- not templates used for formatting, editing, and administration. Template usage somewhat indicates broad categories.
  • The articles like Wikipedia:Database_reports/Templates_with_the_most_transclusions and Special:MostTranscludedPages are useful, but the first is no longer updated it seems, and neither one classifies the templates according to use. Only a few of the templates listed indicate real categories of people, places, things, species, publications, etc. The rest are administrative, formatting, editing. I have taken these lists and I am trying to manually classify them according to use. A subset of them are "real" and those are the ones I want to count.
  • I was trying to find a way to list all the wikipedia articles that talk about people, for instance. Or all the species pages, or all the city pages. I do not know how far such categories are marked with templates. For instance, how many city articles on en Wikipedia do not use infobox city? Or how many geographic articles do not use coord? I think this would give an indication of how far the wiki has progressed in standardizing information about certain classes of things.

Thanks, RC711 (talk) 19:35, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to Florida 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
