Hello, ImprovedWikiImprovment

Thank you for creating Surviving Death.

User:PopePompus, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Your article on the Netflix series is very short at the moment, but the show was just released. As it is, the page seems sufficient to establish notability, and there is good reason to believe the page will be expanded. Thanks for adding the page, and I hope you will help it grow.

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|PopePompus}}. Please remember to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Chedly Ayari

[edit]

Hello,
Before undoing my modification, did you consult the source I mentioned in my edit summary? Several hours after the original sources announcing this person's death, a Tunisian minister has publicly denied this information. This would not be the first time a death is falsely announced by some media. By the way, one of the two original sources (this one) does not state he died. Moumou82 (talk) 21:06, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Moumou82: Apologies; there is enough doubt here for us to not state he is dead at this point. --IWI (talk) 21:09, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I certainly understand that handling sources in a foreign language might make it more difficult to assess. Moumou82 (talk) 21:12, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

This section was written by User:Canadian Otaku, I hope you enjoy it as much as I (Tsugaru) did!

  • If you edit Wikipedia around 1-5 AM, beware, as any admin could block you for being up too late!
  • It's really easy to break Wikipedia, just click here.
  • Ignore people telling you to stop putting "Hrrnngg,,,beans" on the article Bean (film), they don't know what good edits are.
  • Jimbo is god, and can do anything he wants to!

Notes

  • There are 2 new editors now, one of them Berrely, and CanadianOtaku. As mentioned Berrely is our new proofreader (typos beware) and Canadian Otaku is now going to be writing our Humor sections, I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for joining us, and remember, if you want to join, just let me know!

Administrators' newsletter – April 2021

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

Administrator changes

removed AlexandriaHappyme22RexxS

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Tip of the Month

[edit]

This tip is one of the many ways to combat spam on Wikipedia:

  • On Wikipedia, articles either meet the General Notability Guideline or not. When you come across a new article, it is extremely important to determine if it is a real article, or just a spam article. Start with a search on Google, for reliable sources, if you get none in return, then look at the article for non-NPOV content, also scan the references section in the article to see what sources it uses, and check the 'other languages' section and Wikidata to see if it is on other Wikipedias. If other Wikipedias have the same content and/or a CSD or AfD tag (WP:AFD) it is likely spam or not notable, so you can then nominate it for deletion to get input, remember that CSD criterion does not always apply to these articles depending on the content/contex. Also remember to check for copyright violations via earwig's

Grammar

[edit]

Hello. As a former grammar school boy, I was interested to see you have a userbox in which you describe yourself as a "Grammar Nazi". This was after I had noticed that on your User page you include this sentence: "Contrary to popular belief, the mis-spelling of "improvement" in the name of both accounts are intentional to make them more unique." This contains three grammatical errors. (1) Instead of "the name of both accounts", it should be "the names of both accounts", because 'names' must be plural to agree with 'both accounts'. (2) The verb in "are intentional" should be singular because the subject of the sentence is the singular "mis-spelling". (3) It makes no sense to say "more unique" because 'unique' already means 'only one of its kind'. It does make me rather sad that I have just spent about twenty minutes of my life writing this. That school did a real good job on me! Best regards. --Blurryman (talk) 23:41, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Blurryman: Haha, looks like you've got me there. That is indeed very ironic. I’m intrigued; how did you come across my user page? --IWI (talk) 00:01, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi sport! When checking out edits to pages I follow, I sometimes look at user pages to see if they provide any information on the person making the edits. At the moment, I can't recall what it was you had edited, because it was a few days ago. Perhaps it was just that your user name intrigued me! --Blurryman (talk) 00:21, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Regarding the page for Winston Churchill

[edit]

Good Evening (or at least it is evening here in the US),

I wanted to voice a concern with some bias that I perceived in the Winston Churchill page, which I noticed that you have edited.

There is very little in the page which discusses in any substantive detail the high regard in which he is held, rightfully, due to his extraordinary achievements, particularly in the legacy section. The focus seems heavily on a highly critical perspective on his views, especially from historian Martin Gilbert. Yet, no counterperspectives are given on his views on race for instance. You could use quotes disputing Churchill’s supposed racism from the esteemed historian Andrew Roberts. He has written much on Churchill which countermanded much of the legacy section and much of the spin which is put on Churchill’s legacy. The page would also benefit, in the legacy section, of a discussion of his legacy: his high esteem especially in the west, his poll results consistently voted by the people as the greatest Briton, etc. These are all conspicuously absent and suggests a subtle bias against one of the greatest people in British history. 173.67.29.44 (talk) 03:54, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You have a concern about bias coupled with the sentence "one of the greatest people in British history"; I think your problem stems from there. --IWI (talk) 04:01, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

City only guidelines

[edit]

Hi, I noticed your edit on Gary Numan, where you removed Hammersmith stating: City only, per guidelines. I'm aware that Wikipedia often has hidden corners, can you please point me to these guidelines, as I couldn't find them in Template:Infobox person or WP:MOSBIO. Thanks. Sciencefish (talk) 17:58, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sciencefish: Hi. I haven’t been able to find the specific guideline either, however there is definitely consensus to not include neighbourhoods and only include the city/town as they are usually ambiguous in definition and are not important to the lead. --IWI (talk) 22:26, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please point me to the discussion where that consensus was reached, as I can't locate it. Thanks. Sciencefish (talk) 10:00, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, I’m not sure of the specific discussions, but I am aware it exists. Besides, there are other reasons why I think neighbourhoods should be omitted as mentioned above. --IWI (talk) 13:37, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
