Changes addressed; thanks for the review! Regarding the comments by Eggishorn, I must disagree with him. I've had several articles become GAs that relied even more heavily on SABR than this one did. This article is a product of research from SABR, Baseball-Reference, and the New York Times primarily, though it cites many other sources as well (including the Gittleman book, which despite Eggishorn's claim to the contrary is directly cited in the article). Like I said on the review page, sometimes SABR will credit specific sources with its information, and I can use those cites in the article. This SABR article did not do that, though, so I had to cite the article directly. SABR is a reliable source (it is part of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University), and though I cite it heavily, that should not be a problem. I've left the tag on the article because you're the reviewer; if you think it is well-researched enough, I think you can take it off; though if you have concerns about the article's amount of research, let me know. First of all, it surprises me enough how some people take Wikipedia seriously, that is surprising. When it comes to writing something, you need to be clear and precise. I can't believe you are on this site and seeing some people talk about it is ridiculous to an extent. You don't need to talk let alone be a part of something, simple as that. To be honest, I am mainly focused on confronting you more than anything else. I do like Wikipedia and I just don't like how some people treat it. Whether there need to be something done about what you said depends on what you have said. I will ignore you seeing as talking to you or some people is almost pointless. Again, don't be sarcastic or rude. I will not keep talking to you, simple as that. I am surprising my IP will be exposed, actually although I hope enough it's not bad. I said enough. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8084:A5BD:E80:24D8:2CA9:6694:3838 (talk) 22:50, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fouts

[edit]

Excellent job filling out Dan Fouts, especially with sources! The hard thing with adding details on an accomplished player is putting the game details into perspective. Sometimes it's not obvious until later in the editing process. Eventually, see how much of the game details might be better moved to the respective team season articles and their game recaps. This balances the bio from becoming too repetitive with game stat lines. Ideally in bios, it's better to summarize a season or stretches of games, leaving individual game mentions to true career highlights. Don't misunderstand, what you've been doing is fine. I'm more commenting on how to refine the bio once the raw facts are assembled. Sometimes a newspaper article from after a specific season can help frame that perspective. Anyways, glad to see the progress. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 02:27, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I'll go back over the career section once I've gone through his college years. I'd like to get the article to FA status eventually.
Bagumba Do you think we need the section on Chargers franchise records? It's difficult to source without using original research from a stats website (the NFL Record and Fact Book only has his TD passes in a game record on their list of Charger records, and I've mentioned that one in the body of the text). As he set some of the biggest NFL records during his career, club records don't seem as important.--Harper J. Cole (talk) 00:18, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The ones that are already listed seem like standard stats and are probably fine; I'm sure they'd be mentioned in a newspaper too if we dug hard. There's probably a bunch more in the team media guide, which might be getting excessive (WP:FANCRUFT).—Bagumba (talk) 00:39, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba I've trimmed out some of the less important game details now. Let me know if there's more that should be taken out. As things stand, I just need to add a section at the end on his life outside football, and then I can put it up for good article status.--Harper J. Cole (talk) 00:48, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to take a look in a few days.—Bagumba (talk) 00:11, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Got through some of it. Here's some comments for improvement:

  1. Per MOS:CONTEXTBIO, the opening paragraph should include some of his most notable achivements e.g. All-Pros, 4,000 yards, HOF? The rest of the lead can supplement.
  2. College career: Can the text after "Things were quite different ..." go chronologically to the end of the section.
  3. 1975 and 1976 rely too much on reciting stats db facts.
  4. "Fouts expressed a desire to leave San Diego, and complained at a new collective bargaining agreement, which meant the Chargers had only to match the offer of another team to prevent him from leaving": it seems to incorrectly imply his complaining allowed the Chargers to block him from leaving.

1976 Week 9 announcers for Colts-Chargers

[edit]

Hello.

As I know, Ross Porter did not call the Colts-Chargers game. He was calling the Steelers-Chiefs game (which the Steelers would end the Chiefs scoring streak). The website by the of mcmillenandwife has that game and it does sound like Ross Porter and Lionel Aldridge called that game (Steelers-Chiefs). I say either Jay Randolph, Jack Buck, Jim Simpson, Tim Ryan, or Charlie Jones was the play-by-play announcers for that game (Colts-Chargers) but I am not sure who was though. JCartoonsFan 2021 (talk) 21:58, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I don't know the commentators well enough to recognise them by their voices. I'm going by the Pro Football Researchers Association's announcers list. If that's wrong then I don't know of any other sources to check. Harper J. Cole (talk) 22:29, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I say Jay Randolph (play-by-play) or Jack Buck/Paul Maguire (who was put in that Steelers-Chiefs game on the announcers list) called that game. JCartoonsFan 2021 (talk) 21:46, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I could check with the fellow who compiled the PFRA data? It looks like he's on Twitter. Harper J. Cole (talk) 22:46, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If not, check from the newspaper site for the announcers (that game got blacked out in San Diego). JCartoonsFan 2021 (talk) 06:47, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
JCartoonsFan 2021 It took me a while, but I found a more reliable source for the TV pairings. Jack Buck was the Chargers-Colts commentator, as you said.[1] I've corrected it now. Harper J. Cole (talk) 18:25, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fouts

[edit]

Congrats on the GA. Sorry I never got back to reviewing it further above. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been more of my back-burner bio, and even that has been a crawl.—Bagumba (talk) 04:45, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My two lasting memories of the old OR versions of Fouts' bio are "one of the most prolific passing quarterbacks during the Golden Age of the 1970s and 1980s" and "This required a tough, intelligent quarterback with a strong arm. Fouts fit the bill." Classic.—Bagumba (talk) 04:56, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks (and thanks for your edits since the promotion)! I started out just planning a tidy up, but I find it hard to stop short of GA status. I learned some new things, at any rate. Genuinely shocked that Fouts still has the playoff record for consecutive 300-yard games, considering how pass-oriented the game is these days.Harper J. Cole (talk) 23:44, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

{{cite news |last1=Baum |first1=Bob |title=Chargers stand up again |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/106241145/chargers-23-15-cardinals-23-sep-2002/ |agency=Associated Press |pages=B1, [https://www.newspapers.com/clip/106241366/chargers-23-15-cardinals-23-sep-2002/ B3] |newspaper=Santa Maria Times |via=Newspapers.com}}
Baum, Bob. "Chargers stand up again". Santa Maria Times. Associated Press. pp. B1, B3 – via Newspapers.com.

I spelled out 'Associated Press' because that is how the agency is named in the newspaper article. I also added |via=Newspapers.com because the source is delivered to our readers from distributor that not the Santa Maria Times.

Please take more care when writing citation templates so that I and other editors don't have to clean up after.

@Trappist the monk: Thank you - to be honest, I am aware of these issues. When using the "cite news" template, "newspaper" and "page"/"pages" don't seem to be given as options, unless I'm missing something. Therefore, I put the data in the "publisher" and "issue" fields, then try to remember to manually edit them afterwards. I always make a final check when I'm done with editing a page, e.g. this edit, where I correct over 70 instances. Of course, other editors can't know that I'm going to do that. I'll try to get into the habit of checking my work more often. Harper J. Cole (talk) 19:13, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When using the "cite news" template, "newspaper" and "page"/"pages" don't seem to be given as options What editor are you using? If you are using visual editor, all of those listed at Template:Cite news § TemplateData either as the canonical parameter name or as aliases. If you are using the WP:RefToolbar editor, aliases of the canonical parameter names are not listed because of lack of space for them. |newspaper= is an alias of |work=. |page= and |pages= are listed in the 'second page' (click the 'Show/hide extra fields' button).
I don't use either of these editors (especially not ve) but if you really don't see these options and are using one of these editors, there is likely a bug in one or both that should be reported so that it can be fixed.
Trappist the monk (talk) 19:32, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Thanks again - I use WP:RefToolbar. I see what to do now. Apologies for any inconvenience. Harper J. Cole (talk) 20:09, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest in WP style

[edit]

You have an impressive editing record, concentrated in a narrow topic. I've gone the other way, especially in recent years, just gnoming across all subjects. As I mentioned, 99% of my edits go unremarked, but since I did most of my 400,000 or so edits in the last year, that 1% (or less) that gets reacted to can be a burden. Several times the sports fans have taken me to WP:ANI for taking away their precious capital letters. Fortunately, they didn't have any real case and I got off without sanctions, after a couple of scary proposals to muzzle me. I appreciate your support of the spirit of MOS:CAPS and you interest in getting it right. Just don't go too fast like I sometimes do, and you'll probably do fine. Dicklyon (talk) 00:46, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, it's a nice thing about Wikipedia that editors can pick the type of work that suits them. I'll know the right approach when I edit Chargers season articles in future. Harper J. Cole (talk) 19:04, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's your thinking on "Week n Gamebook"? Is this a work title that should be in title case? Some have lowercase gamebook. In 1964 San Diego Chargers season I downcased Week to match gamebook, but in others I capped both. I'd like to make it consistent, but am unsure what this is since I don't see a link that works for me. Dicklyon (talk) 03:46, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gamebooks were historically documents that were created by the home team and only released to the media to aid in coverage, though they're published online these days: recent example.
These vary from team to team, but are usually untitled or given a basic title like "Game Summary". The word "gamebook" is a general description of them, so I think lowercase makes sense. Harper J. Cole (talk) 09:32, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Then lowercase week, too, I presume, when it's not the first word. Dicklyon (talk) 15:31, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'd agree with that; it's a description of the document rather than an official title. Harper J. Cole (talk) 16:40, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:BeanieFan11 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Harper J. Cole to be Editor of the Week. He has totaled around 8,500 edits since registering in December 2020 (one month after me!), many of which have been substantial improvements relating to the Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers. An active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League, he has brought many articles from poor quality to WP:GA (see for example 1961 San Diego Chargers season then and now). He has brought to GA the Chargers seasons of 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 2021, for a total of 10 out of 70 Chargers seasons overall (which is impressive considering only 21 other NFL team seasons are GAs, meaning he has nearly a third of all of them!) He also has brought to WP:FL the List of Los Angeles Chargers first-round draft picks and List of Los Angeles Chargers starting quarterbacks, as well as brought to good article status Dan Fouts and LaDainian Tomlinson (plus Don Coryell pending).

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. [edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
