Those are evil looking kittens. – iridescent 03:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
They are NOT! Well, the orange one's not. Because it's mastered the art of looking innocent. The black one's still working on that whole "covering up the fact that it wants to tear your face off" thing. delldot ∇. 01:35, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
No, they both look evil. Too much squinting on the eyes... Calvin 1998 (t·c) 02:33, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

MfD

Its just a test I'm doing at the moment. Currently, I am one of the only editors who maintains MfD, until I can get the bot working again. Too often, when editors file an MfD, they ignore the date header and put it under the current one. I've placed commented date headers there so that when someone transcludes, you might double check. We don't have to use them, but I've also been using them for a few weeks in the closed discussions section, and they seem to be working there. I'm going off line now. Later gurch. Annoying bug in the new version of Huggle

I'm not sure if you take these sorts of comments, or whomever does it, but I'll simply start with you. In the new version of Huggle, I'm finding that every dialog box, when I click "cancel", it comes back up, and then if I cancel again, it comes up once more, requiring another cancel to finally quell it. miquonranger03 (talk) 21:44, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

    • Most, if not all. I remember the "message user" tool, the box asking something along the lines of "you are trying to revert to another edit from the user who is being reverted", and, if I'm not mistaken, the "edit page" tool all having this problem at one time or another.
Seeing as I'm here – I can't replicate this one. – iridescent 03:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I can actually confirm that this happens at least upon hitting "OK". Cancel I haven't tried. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 04:07, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I'm getting this now. Must be an intermittent thing as it sometimes works fine. – iridescent 20:17, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Now in addition to that, I'm getting the error message

ArgumentOutOfRangeException: StartIndex cannot be less than zero. Parameter name: startIndex at System.String.InternalSubStringWithChecks(Int32 startIndex, Int32 length, Boolean fAlwaysCopy) at Huggle.Page.get_Owner() at Huggle.Queue.MatchesFilter(Edit Edit) at Huggle.Processing.ProcessNewEdit(Edit Edit) at Huggle.Irc.ProcessIrcEdit(Object EditObject)

Regarding Huggle

Sorry to bother you about this, but I was very interested in using Huggle (seeing as VP is now discontinued), however I have been getting a constant "Unable to login" message and I'm not entirely sure why (I posted on the feedback page about this). Also, in case you were interested, on Vista Ultimate I am getting a null argument exception (at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.FindEntry(TKey key)) when starting up version 0.8.1. I apologise again for bothering you with this but I will appreciate any help :) --RazorICE 10:16, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, everyone and their dog seems to be getting this. It will be fixed in the next version, but when that version will be available, I have no idea. In the meantime, use the previous version of Huggle, which does not have this problem -- Gurch (talk) 17:50, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, but I meant that I am getting an "Unable to login" problem with the older version, 0.7.12 (and I really want to use it xD). I'm not behind any firewalls or proxies, so I have no idea what could be causing it. Any ideas? Or is this what you were referring to? Well, thanks again :)  --RazorICE 13:25, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Huggle is just plain superb

I have been a Huggle user for 6 months now and I can honestly say it would be impossible to fight vandalism without it. The work you have done is appreciated by all. I just wanted to let you know. --CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 10:43, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Blue_Öyster_Cult_-_(Don't_Fear)_The_Reaper.ogg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Blue_Öyster_Cult_-_(Don't_Fear)_The_Reaper.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?  ★  Bigr Tex 01:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

It does have a fair use rationale. One simply needs to look carefully for it. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 01:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Didn't I decline this exact same request from you last month? – iridescent 01:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
[1] - different person. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 02:30, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
These taggings are presumably down to someone using a semiautomated tool too fast without fully reading the material they're tagging, or not reading the instructions on how to use it correctly. I'm sure I've heard that somewhere else, but just where escapes me for the moment. – iridescent 02:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Of course, it could also be someone who has been reviewing rationales for 18+ months, using a semiautomated tool, who while generally liberal about rationales thinks that Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline's recommendation that the rationale include "What purpose does the image serve in the article?" is important.
The fact that the word 'rationale' was nowhere on the page did make it look at first glance as if nobody had tried to create a rationale. On further review, this summary does a better job of covering the other necessary components for a rationale than most WP:Music Samples I've looked at in the last couple of months.
I still think that it would be good to include a rationale for how the presence of this particular bit of non-free music significantly increases readers' understanding of (Don't Fear) The Reaper.* For instance, is it for identification, illustration, or commentary? How does it fulfill that role in the article?  ★  Bigr Tex 16:59, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Okay, so how do I fix it? A (Reply!,Contribs!) 19:30, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Study programming, get a job at the WMF as a software developer, and rewrite MediaWiki. The faults are down to changes in the MediaWiki software, not Huggle itself. – iridescent 19:45, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I'm being friendly. Don't act like I'm attacking you. User talk:Jeff G.‎ told me you were the reason he didn't add it for a shared IP and to tell you. Perhaps you should add a notation for users to use that for shared IP's. I was told to tell you becuasehe used your template soI did. It's not me singling you out. (unindent) I thought the software had checks to ensure that the entire text of the revision goes through before it saves it. If not, that's a bug. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:00, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

It does. The text gets truncated by the browser's input field, the submitted request is syntactically correct. So to the server, the result is indistinguishable from that produced if the browser loads the full text of the page, and the user then erases most of it before saving -- Gurch (talk) 19:09, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Huggle and welcome warnings

Hi Gurch, I've noticed that when I welcome vandals with {{subst:welcome-anon-vandal|Article|me=WereSpielChequers}} if it doesn't work and they go on vandalising, hugglers tend to give them a level 1 warning rather than a level 2 warning. Is this because of the edit summary I use, or does Huggle not treat the welcome-anon-vandal template as a level 1 warning? ϢereSpielChequers 12:13, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Likely the latter, huggle doesn't use the edit summary to find warning levels. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 14:29, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Actually it does, but it doesn't know the summary "Welcome Warning", and information derived from the summary is overridden by information derived from the page text; {{welcome-anon-vandal}} lacked the identifying comment that most warning templates have, which Huggle uses to determine the level of a warning. I have added such a comment; once the next version of Huggle is released it will correctly interpret it as a warning -- Gurch (talk) 18:05, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Gurch, as I often patrol RC looking at small edits by IPs with redlinked talkpages that is one of my favourite templates. ϢereSpielChequers 01:25, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Quick question

Hey Gurch, long time...I have a quick Huggle question for you. Am I mistaken in believing that Huggle was only for people with access to rollback? I remember we had a discussion some months back where you said the next release (at the time) was going to require rollback access in order to operate. Has this been changed, was it never implemented, or am I just misremembering? I asked because I noticed a user without rollback rights who was using Huggle. Thanks, Metros (talk) 00:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

ATM Huggle requires rollback if Wikipedia:Huggle/Download is to be correct, so I'm a tad puzzled as well. Sam Blab 01:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
It works with or without rollback, but on this project is limited (unless recompiled with code changes) to users with the rollback permission -- Gurch (talk) 01:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Nevermind, I just noticed what I did. I was forgot to put "User:" before the user's user name in the logs. Whoops. False alarm. Thanks though! Metros (talk) 01:24, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Believe it or not, the text is based off of Myriad Pro. Just a little tweaking, and it looked like a ball of goo mysteriously spelling "huggle". I don't know where I got the "goo" idea, just playing with Inkscape. TNP (formerly Jonathan) 03:40, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Dire Straits - Money for Nothing.ogg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Dire Straits - Money for Nothing.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:08, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I have reverted a recent edit you made to the Stupid Motorist Law in which you removed the tag calling into question the article's "worldwide focus". While I concede that you were correct in questioning how an article on an Arizona local law could have "worldwide focus", I would like to point out my comments on the article's Talk page in which I propose that the article should be expanded to include information on similar laws in other jurisdictions, which should clear up any questions regarding the article's "worldwide focus". I have also had a discussion regarding this article with User:Exit2DOS2000 who agrees with me that the article should be expanded. --TommyBoy (talk) 23:07, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I don't know if it helps, but I first saw the word in question in print in February 1983, on a poster advertising "National Huggle Week". It was apparently an initiative to spread the happiness of Valentine's Day a little wider. Philip Trueman (talk) 11:26, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Request

Hey Gurch!

If it's not too much trouble, and you get a chance, could you upload Huggle's entire project file to Google Code? Your new version has continued producing a random glitch on my system, and I think I could fix it. No one I have spoken to has been able to replicate the bug, so I think it's a problem with my hardware, unfortunately, I cannot figure out what is causing it. Thanks, J.delanoygabsadds 19:14, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Er... as far as I'm aware the entire project is on Google Code. What's missing? -- Gurch (talk) 05:13, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
heh, nothing. I was trying to compile it in the C# environment. :/ Whoops. Sorry for bugging you. J.delanoygabsadds 06:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: Rollback for Huggle

Hi, i have been reverting changes for a while and am finding it hard to keep having to refresh the pages for recent changes.

A friend who also Patrols recent changes segestes using Huggle, in which i have since downloaded it. According to huggle i do not have the rollback permission, and yet i have been using rollback on pages.

help?

Many Thanks, Kira

You may be confusing Twinkle's revert feature for the special user-right rollback. Rollback must be requested here. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 22:09, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Chuggle

Hi, I am writing a clone of Huggle in python (pyKDE in fact) for using it on linux. At the moment only the buttons of revert, whitelist and next-diff work, and there are a lot of things to fix/improve, but I just wanted to let you know :). The project is hosted in http://code.google.com/p/chuggle/ .Chabacano (talk) 19:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok. I did the changes and clarified everything. It is worth noting that I'm not using huggle's code.Chabacano (talk) 12:26, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Please stop

Your merge of WP:WAR and WP:WHEEL does not appear to have been based on any sort of discussion or consensus. This may not be your intention, but the effect of your actions has been disruptive. Please talk about such major changes first. I undid your good faith changes (and rolled back the redirect changes because it was easier to fix the large number of them with one click). Please, please, please discuss before merging policies. Thank you. Jehochman Talk 14:34, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Same goes for the merge of WP:3RR with WP:EW. There is a little discussion there but hardly what anyone could call consensus. Mangojuicetalk 14:39, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Agree there isn't consensus, but disagree with the misuse of rollback tool - please be more careful with its use. A non-admin would probably have it revoked for actions like that, which are, in a way, edit warring. – How do you turn this on (talk) 15:07, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Let's not be silly. When a large number of redirects need to be fixed, it is stupid to have to do everything by hand. I believe an argument could be made that the merger without discussion was highly disruptive and unproductive edit. By extending more good faith to the user, I do not endanger myself for using rollback to fix a large quantity of redirects quickly. Jehochman Talk 16:04, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
I see nothing wrong with Jehochman's use of the rollback tool.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 16:23, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Apologies; didn't realise it was more than one revert. I assumed Gurch only redirected the one page. Sorry, my mistake. – How do you turn this on (talk) 17:20, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Not everything has to be based on consensus. If it were, nothing would ever get done. -- Gurch (talk) 15:44, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
However, when dealing with official Wikipedia policy, boldness should be tempered with caution. Read the {{policy}} template at the top of the pages: "Any edit to this page should reflect consensus." Policies are meant to be reflections of community-wide practice and consensus. Unilaterally rearranging our policies/guidelines is not really tenable if we want a stable editing environment. In this case, the bold, revert, discuss cycle should really be the "discuss, consensus-based edit, discuss more" cycle. Merging these pages may be a great idea, but the community can't know that until you put forward your arguments as to why it should be done. Propose the merger on the talk pages of those pages you want to merge/move, and let other editors comment. Less drama all around. Cheers, and keep up the boldness (with caution, of course)!--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 16:23, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
