Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Ganeshk. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Wikidata

Hi Ganeshk, I'm wondering if your bot does / could deal with the wikidata element of the articles it is creating - i.e. create wikidata items with appropriate properties where these do not exist, or add sitelinks where appropriate items already exist. It seems very much a bot-ish task. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:48, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Tagishsimon:, I will look into Wikidata integration as a priority before I create any more items. Ganeshk (talk) 02:00, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I would greatly appreciate you doing so - although I leave the decision to you as to whether you pause the creation of new articles; wikidata can be brought up to date later, of course. I don't know how familiar you are with wikidata; I hesitate to suggest I might be any use, but if I can be of any help, it is where I spend most of my time, and so I'm familiar with certain aspects of it, not least the SPARQL reporting service, QuickStatements, and the use of Petscan to crosscheck between language wikipedias and wikidata. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:07, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi @Tagishsimon: I am new to Wikidata, could use your help. I tried to link Aequispirella corula to Wikidata using Q60204555. But the taxonbar is not picking up the link. What did I miss? Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 02:40, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Not sure if there is a problem. I see your http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60204555 which looks very fine, and has a sitelink back to the en.wiki article ... I've purged the wikipedia article and I see it knows about the wikidata item. Explain the problem some more? --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:44, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: I fixed it just now. I had to add a WoRMS identifer before the Taxonbar showed up on the Enwiki article. Ganeshk (talk) 02:45, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: Can you help delete this item, http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60204065? I accidentally created it and it is a duplicate of http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60180696. Ganeshk (talk) 02:47, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Done. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:48, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: How do I get autoconfirmed on Wikidata? I get this error when I create a new batch on QuickStatements, "You can't create a new batch, because you are not autoconfirmed". Ganeshk (talk) 04:05, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

You need 50 edits, iirc; and there might be a bit of latency in quickstatements understanding you have your 50. --Tagishsimon (talk) 04:10, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

You could maybe get a script to bash away at http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4115189 - it's a junk item. Feel free to add crap to it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 04:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: Thanks, that did the trick. Ganeshk (talk) 04:22, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Great thanks for reviving Ganeshbot!

Hi Ganesh, I just wanted to comment on how splendid it is that you have re-written Ganeshbot! Thanks so much! Invertzoo (talk) 16:42, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

@Invertzoo: Hi Susan, you are very welcome! It was bugging me over the years that I had the left the task partially done. It is nice talking to you and JoJan again. I am currently working on figuring out the Wikidata process for adding taxons so that the Taxonbar works correctly. For this reason, I have paused the new article creation. The recent new stubs are listed here (click the links that show the number of edits for each family). Happy New Year, Ganeshk (talk) 20:21, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
Happy New Year to you too Ganesh! Invertzoo (talk) 15:21, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, as you are an admin and one of the few who seem active and part of Wiki Biography project, could you help? Before submitting the article linked in the header I added this talk page with find sources (as I usually do), being the best way to get info about an article subject I am creating. Unfortunately I saved the page this time. Is it possible for you to remove it please? Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 13:41, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

 Done @Acabashi: Ganeshk (talk) 14:51, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Next time use your User:Acabashi/sandbox for this. Use a parameter, {{find sources|Sean Rigby biography}}. Ganeshk (talk) 14:53, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 15:33, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Oops

I'm afraid it looks like you have a systematic error with the categories of your latest batch, Ganeshk. Check out e.g. Gibberula compressa - you've left colons at the start of the category link, which means they're not acting as categories, but rather as plain links to the categories. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:45, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Same issue on Plesiocystiscus myrmecoon and friends. :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:46, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: It was intentional. That will get fixed in the cleanup run that is on right now. Ganeshk (talk) 19:47, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Example. Ganeshk (talk) 19:48, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Excellent. As you were. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:49, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Please, please don't create automated taxoboxes when the relevant taxonomy template doesn't exist. It populates the error-tracking category, and wastes a lot of editors' time checking and performing null edits to clear the category if there isn't by then an error. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:18, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Peter coxhead:, Ok, so far I have been creating the taxonomy templates manually after the bot run. I will look into having those created prior to the bot creating the species/genus pages. Ganeshk (talk)
@Peter coxhead:Also, I get your point about the null edits to remove articles from the cleanup category. Ganeshk (talk) 20:44, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ganeshk

I see that your bot has been creating lots of stubs.

Many of them have categorised in non-existent categories, including Category:Pachybathron, Category:Persicula, Category:Plesiocystiscus, & Category:Gibberula.

Per WP:REDNOT, that is an error. Please can you either create the category pages, or alternatively re-categorise the stubs?

Thanks. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:01, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi @BrownHairedGirl: I just got those created. Thanks for your attention. I will create them early in the future. Ganeshk (talk) 21:03, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:06, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Ganeshk: I think these two points are connected – both the taxonomy template and the category need to exist before they are used in the article. Peter coxhead (talk) 22:00, 5 January 2019 (UTC) @Peter coxhead:

Agreed. Ganeshk (talk) 22:12, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Categories created by Ganeshbot

Hello, Ganeshk,

Yesterday and today I tagged around 20-40 empty categories that were just created by Ganeshbot. They all looked like they were about biological species. We typically delete empty categories after 7 days unless they are redirects, part of a CfD discussion or are maintenance categories that are occasionally empty.

My question is is this bot (or another editor) going to be creating stub articles to fill these categories? Because, ideally, every category would be filled with appropriate articles that have been placed in that category but if the category is empty, it is deleted.

I've run into human editors who prolifically created categories that were empty because they were created before any articles that could be tagged were created. But I haven't run into this behavior by a bot and I was hoping you might have an explanation. They all look like valid categories, just no articles have been placed in them yet and I'm not sure if we can expect that to happen over the next 6 or 7 days.

Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 06:36, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

I just read the conversation above this one about similar stub creations, I'm just not sure where these categories fit into ones that have already been assigned to stub articles because, as I said, they are empty and no articles appear to be assigned to them yet. Liz Read! Talk! 06:39, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi @Liz:, I have fixed them all with at least one page on each category. Going forward, I will make sure that I don't leave empty categories. Ganeshk (talk) 15:52, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.
