From Uranometria
Hi Ragib, i notice you edit bangladeshi peoples. Do you have anything to add for this Bangladeshi writer Abdul Ahad? Do you think he should be categorise as a Bangladeshi Writer, Bangladeshi astronomer and People from Bangladesh as well as his British categories? He needs more notability I think. Sorry
Sorry for adding the template to NTV's article. The only reason for its addition was for Bangladeshi television viewers in the world to easily be able to access information on the channels that they can subscribe to from their homeland. I agree that it is not highly relevent to the article, so please remove it.

Vandalism spree
Hi Ragib,
I'm not sure of the process to follow so am hoping you'd be able to help. There is a user who's on a vandalism spree Special:Contributions/83.21.74.172. How should these be dealt with?
Thanks. → Aktar (talk • contribs) — 14:05, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi Ragib - if/when you have time, please have a detailed look at the article. I'm adding the final touches and we should be able to go for FAC in a day or so. The addition of a few more citations and language/tone copyediting are the only remaining tasks. Also, would be a good idea to rename this article to "Bengali language movement," or "Language movement of East Bengal" or something - as I googled this title looking for sources, I saw that this particular term has been used for several different events and topics. There could be a need to differentiate in the future. Rama's arrow (just a sexy boy) 23:43, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also, please try to get some more details on "The Azad" newspaper. Tarif has used it as main source of citations and I suspect we'll need some more publication info. Rama's arrow (just a sexy boy) 23:52, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Trivia
During Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq's government, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman held a ministerial portfolio - there are pictorial and textual evidence regarding the aforementioned that I'm willing to submit. Do you have an email address? I don't want Fazlul Huq's influence and contributions in history deprived. The Minister 08:21, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, I don't see any mention of the ministerial portfolio that Sheikh Mujib held during Fazlul Huq's government in Sheikh Mujib's biography. It's evidenced in history with pictures and texts - how could wikipedia miss or dismiss it as irrelevant? Moreover, if this sounds irrelevant, then I think you should have a poll and see what the majority of Bengali people think - cause you an administrator, is in a better position to decide the majority result.
Moreover, Fazlul Huq's biography is not worth just a few paragraphs - there is more to it and I'll try my best to gather as much information as possible, if you are willing to help as well?
OK. Thanks. The Minister 08:38, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

I had asked for the script to be translated to tamil. I was referred to a similar script written by another user. I am checking whether I can use that.
I have not written any new bot scripts. I was thinking I would write one to read directly from the Fallingrain website and create some more missing towns (census ignored many smaller towns) and add location coords for many existing ones. That is still in the works. I am lacking time too.

Flurry of vandalism
Hey, sory for being so late in replying. I have an exam on 4th, and was studying for a change. :) Anyways, I reviewed the situation and, like I said at ANI, I think sprotecting the pages is the best idea as the blanket ban covers 131,072 IPs!!! Your block was okay considering the need for quick damage control. But it cannot be a lasting solution. Sprotects can be implemented longer than the block.
Also, while going through the vandalism edits, I saw that almost all talk page edits contained the word "Sunni". So may be a bot can be reprogrammed to revert on sight any edit from that IP range that contains the word (that would be trivial for bots that try to revert vandalism). Just a thought. Anyways, I will keep an eye on the affected articles plus a few more that I was able to pull up from your contribs. --soum (0_o) 21:57, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

External Link
Hello Ragib,
I had added few links to some articles. Those external links are for books available online and which are stricly related to those articles or topics. You have sent me a message to check the external link policy before editing any page further. I am just wondering if you have noticed or not but I have found many links to different articles as External Links which also violates the external link policy. For example, you will find many links in wikipedia which links to an external site www.boi-mela.com and this site is exactly the similar eCommerce site as mine. So just wondering if you have deleted my links, why still there are thousands of links in many different articles to boi-mela ? I will appreciate your feedback on this.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Bangladesh-betar-logo.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Bangladesh-betar-logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Jibanananda Das Ref
Do you think references carrying Bangla script on the English Wikipedia is a good idea? It is one thing to spell the name of the subject in vernacular script, but it's entirely another thing to spell out book names in vernacular. This, after all, is the English Wikipedia. External Link Policy
hello Ragib,
You've deleted couple of my links which I have added as external source of related books and music cds. And you also made a not that I should check external link policy before I add something again.
I will highly appreciate if you can comment on below:
http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Al-Faruq#_ref-0
There has a link under "References" which links to an external site "http://www.onlinebanglabook.com/". There are so many hidden deep links in wiki which shows either links to http://www.onlinebanglabook.com/ or www.boi-mela.com both of them are a fully commercial site.
I will be happy to get an honest feedback from you. I have been trying to promote my site www.banglaclick.com, thats true but if you ever have had a chance to look at the site you will notice I have down to earth price. And the reason behind this I do not make any profit out of it for my own. The tiny bit of profit I do goes to maintain the site and to keep the stock in Bangladesh. My goal is to STOP those websites who offer music, drama, movie, books for free and thats illegal. Violation of copyright. Just to raise this voice I have started my own webshop whereas I have my own profession and I work as SAP professional. My website is obviously an eCommerce site but thats to encourage people to buy books cd dvd to help grow bangla, to help grow bangladesh.
I will appreciate your second thoughts. If you remove my links, please also do so for many other weblinks which directs to commercial ecommerce sites.
Thank you.

Bangladesh
My 'justification' is that the title is more thorough, distinct, and descriptive. It is that way for many articles for various countries. Because there are no complex units, the title does not have to be just "administrative divisions" - and per the text you quoted on my talk page (and I also quoted on the Bangladesh talk page), it should be "divisions" but it can be expanded for better detail as I suggest. "Administrative divisions" is unacceptable because of the simple unit and assigned name. Rarelibra 19:59, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi, can you add the Bangla script to Panch phoron? Badagnani 10:29, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the Bengali! What is the literal meaning of "panch phoron" (or should it be spelled "panch phoran")? If the second word isn't a proper noun, then WP convention says that it's lower case. Like Hollandaise sauce. But if the second word is the name of a person or a city or something, it could be capitalized. Badagnani 10:41, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Jamuna River
I challange your 7 June 2007 edit to the Jamuna River article in which you reverted a footnote. In the area of what is now Bangladesh it may well be true that the last portion of the combined flow of the three great rivers, Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna-Surma river system where it flows into the Bay of Bengal is called the Meghna or the lower Meghna, as is confirmed on official maps of Bangladesh. However, in Britain and America it has traditionally been the Ganges that flowed into the Bay of Bengal. This is documented in the Encyclopedia Britannica which gives a length for the Surma-Meghna river of 900 km, not 946, because the last 46 km is Ganges. The Encyclopedia Britannica says expressly "becomes the Meghna River, which flows south past Dhaka (formerly Dacca) and enters the Ganges." This does not mean that those 46 km of very wide river are not called the lower Meghna in Bangladesh; however it does mean that traditionally in Britain it is called the Ganges. --Bejnar 16:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Banglapedia, the massive encyclopedia from Asiatic Society, never mentions Meghna's lower part as Ganges. In this article, we see no references to Ganges. Locally, the river is and has always been called Meghna. Why is it relevant to focus on what the British publications mention? Please show a recent map or other publication that calls the river Ganges. My sources are: CIA World Factbook, Abdul Wazed, Bangladesher Nadimala (Rivers of Bangladesh, in Bangla), Dhaka, 1991; FH Khan, Geology of Bangladesh, University Press Limited, Dhaka, 1991; Haroun Er Rashid, Geography of Bangladesh, University Press Limited, Dhaka, 1991; Hugh Brammer, The Geography of the Soils of Bangladesh, University Press Limited, Dhaka, 1996; Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), 1998 Statistical Year Book of Bangladesh, BBS, Dhaka, 1999. Thanks. --Ragib 16:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I think you have missed my point. (1) I did not focus on the fact that it was traditionally called the Ganges in British sources,; I did not put it in the text, I put it discreetly in a footnote. (2) the Encyclopedia Britannica source is adequate to show that a substantial number of people think (or thought) that it is called the Ganges. (3) It does not matter that it is current, I deliberately stated traditionally, because standards are changing to refer to places by their local name. However, I do think that the footnote is valuable, because so many people in the West were educated believing that the Ganges flowed into the Bay of Bengal. --Bejnar 17:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- As I have shown in the article talk page for Jamuna River, Encyclopedia Britannica itself calls the river falling into the Bay of Bengal as Meghna. Thank you. --Ragib 17:41, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- You are still missing the point. It is not what the Encyclopedia Britannica says now that is important. It is how the English speaking world outside of Bengal regarded the issue over the past two hundred years. Instructive is the text from The Imperial Gazetteer of India of 1885:
- "THE GANGES, which enters on the western frontier, and runs diagonally across Bengal, gives to the country its peculiar character and aspect. About 220 miles from its mouth, it spreads out into numerous branches, forming a Delta. The Delta, where it borders on the sea, becomes a labyrinth of creeks and rivers, running through the dense forests of the SUNDARBANS, and exhibiting during the annual inundation the appearance of an immense sea. Higher up, the rice-fields, to the extent of thousands of square miles, are submerged. The scene presents to a European eye a panorama of singular novelty and interest—the crops covered with water; the cars of grain floating on the surface; the stupendous embankments, which restrain, without altogether preventing, the excesses of the inundations; and peasants in all quarters going about their daily work in canoes or on rafts. The navigable streams which fall into, or diverge from, the Ganges, intersect the country in every direction, and afford abundant facilities for internal communication. In many parts, boats can approach, by means of lakes, rivulets, and watercourses, to the door of almost every cottage. The lower region of the Ganges is the richest and most productive portion of Bengal, and abounds in valuable produce. The other mighty river by which Bengal is intersected is the BRARMAPUTRA, the source of whose remotest tributary is on the opposite or northern side of the same Himalayan Mountains from whose southern slopes the Ganges takes its rise. These two rivers proceed in diverging courses until they are more than zoo miles asunder; and again approaching each other, intermix their waters before they reach the ocean. The principal minor rivers in Bengal (all of which see separately) are — the GOGRA (Ghagr), SON (Soane), GANDAK, Kusi, TISTA; the HUGLI (Hoogly), formed by the junction of the Bhágarathi and Jalangi; farther to the west, the DAIODAR and RUPNARAYAN; and in the south-west, the MAHANADI, or ‘Great River’ of Orissa. In a level country like Bengal, where the soil is composed of yielding and loose materials, the courses of the rivers are continually shifting, from the wearing away of their banks, or from the water being turned off, by obstacles in its course, into a different channel. As the new channel gradually widens, the old bed of the river is left dry. The new channel into which the river flows is, of course, so much land lost, while the old bed constitutes an accession to the adjacent estates. Thus, one man’s property is diminished, while that of another is enlarged or improved; and a distinct branch of Anglo-Indian jurisprudence has grown up, the particular province of which is the definition and regulation of the alluvial tights alike of private proprietors and of the State." Available via Google Books. Note that there is no mention of the Meghna. Also the current Encyclopedia Britannica article on the Ganges in the Micropedia skirts the issue by simple saying the combined waters flow into the Bay of Bengal.
- You are still missing the point. It is not what the Encyclopedia Britannica says now that is important. It is how the English speaking world outside of Bengal regarded the issue over the past two hundred years. Instructive is the text from The Imperial Gazetteer of India of 1885:
- As I have shown in the article talk page for Jamuna River, Encyclopedia Britannica itself calls the river falling into the Bay of Bengal as Meghna. Thank you. --Ragib 17:41, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Bangladesh wikiproject
I have going through the project pages, and the project seemed mostly shabbily constructed to me. Can I reorganize a few things there? Like, putting the proposals that are still relevant on single page, make a distinction between all those talk pages/discussion boards and notice boards - or may be put a few redirects to keep things coherent. The new categorization proposal should in no ways be on the mother page, it may also be removed altogether. The mother page layout is not too good, and I could copy a few good ideas from a couple of other projects I have interacting with. The project coordination isn't happening all too good anyways. And, I also propose to turn the history wikiproject into a workgroup. A geography sub-project/workgroup may be needed as well. The project also needs fresh blood, or at least a fresh drive to recharge members, some of the older members are not really making use of the project page. Do I need to seek a consensus to do all that? Or do I take a bold step and do it anyways. Aditya Kabir 16:38, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

External links to bdalumni.net
Dear Ragib,
yesterday I added external links to bdalumni.net from Dhaka College and Dhaka University articles, both were later reverted.
bdalumni.net is an open networking platform for university and college graduates of Bangladesh living at home and abroad. It is not a revenue-driven website to sell or promote any commercial services or products. As you know well, without a few exceptions Bangladeshi colleges and universities generally do not maintain any alumni website. Bdalumni was designed with the simple idea to facilitate an open and free networking platform where alumni can meet each other, share professional experiences/achievments/ideas, and help/mentor/guide fellow alumni. Please take a moment to visit the site and please let us know your thoughts on adding back the links.
Also, we would really love to see you in bdalumni under BUET alumni database. Your profile can truely motivate many others to go for it.
Regards,
caste system among the Bangladeshi Muslim.
Ragib bhai, I need your help. Some people wrote in "Caste system among South Asian Muslims" that caste system exist among the Bangladeshi Muslims. Please see the Talk page of "Caste system among South Asian Muslims". They said "intercaste marriages in Bangladesh are 10% of all marriages (among Muslims)". I know you are laughing like I am. They said "Quoms" are the lower caste among the Bangladeshi Muslims and "Ashrafs" are the higher caste among the Bangladeshi Muslims.
The article says "The Quoms who deal with human emissions are ranked the lowest. Studies of Bengali Muslims in India indicate that the concepts of purity and impurity exist among them and are applicable in inter-group relationships, as the notions of hygiene and cleanliness in a person are related to the person's social position and not to his/her economic status". Tarikur 01:10, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
- Ragib, note the "Studies of Bengali Muslims in India". In India. Bangladesh is mentioned twice on the page, and that too in references/external links.Bakaman 01:18, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Ark
Ragib - please be very careful with your choice of words. If you have a good look at a "hang-on" tag you will see that it notes the following... this request is not binding, and the page may still be deleted if the page unquestionably meets the speedy deletion criteria... You simply removed the speedy deletion tag and despite your suggestion, the article did not in any way assert notability indeed it only had the following content ... Ark was a popular Bangladeshi rock band. The band got popularity during the late 1990's with their vocals Hasan, Tulu and composer Pancham. Later some of the members including Hasan came out of the band and formed a new band named Jonmobhumi . Finally I will be happy to assist you in any way you need but only where you Assume Good Faith on my talk page.--VS talk 22:52, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- No problems here also Ragib. I can assure you I have no bias against any article other than it meet WP standards. My return suggestion (to interact with the inevitable admin assisting at WP:CSD)is to add words that influence the notability factor or reference before removing the speedy. That sort of edit will stand out immediately as we watch the history - (and will look less like a the work of a sockpuppet) and, well certainly in my case I simply wouldn't remove the article if it asserted notability. Cheers! --VS talk 23:37, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- Oh sorry Ragib - my mistake I had already restored it for you I assume you can address the notability with enough to keep it safe from a further tag? Best wishes --VS talk 23:52, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

SMOG attack!
Thank you for your response about the Wikipedia page, SMOG (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook), which I misunderstood as a hoax. As it happened, I had been looking for technical information to help my aging pickup truck pass the California emissions test--only to be blind-sided by the Liberal Arts Department. (I had searched Wikipedia under the term "smog test.") I'll be more cautious in the future. Thank you again for your vigilance and efforts. Fagiolonero 03:18, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:25paisa.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:25paisa.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.∆ 16:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know - I won't copy edit from back logs anymore
- That's O.K. Copy editing from the copy edit backlog is pretty unrewarding anyway. I didn't know that an article could be taken out from under me that way. Really unpleasant. I'll not copy edit from backlogs anymore so that won't happen again. Thanks. Mattisse 21:10, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. And staying away from Bangladesh articles probably would help. Yes? Thanks. Mattisse 21:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
user:Hindutashravi 3RR violation on Hindutash
Hi Ragib,
Sorry to bother you, but a POV-pusing new user user:Hindutashravi, who is claiming that parts of southwestern Xinjiang are in fact parts of Ladakh and Kashmir according to a discredited (even in the 1870s) claim, is edit-warring on that page. I first noticed that page about a week ago, made a post both on his talk page and on the India-related notice board. I then edited it using sold sources and maps. He insists on reverting to his version, which among other things is (a) a copy vio, (b) is completely inaccurate in its history, (c) is poorly written, and (d) is inaccurate in its geography. He has now violated a the 3RR rule, claiming that he has added a few things, but I don't see any additions. His only source is Gazetteer of Kashimr" with no publisher, date etc. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 19:50, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- He reverted, more of less, (he left some of my references in) to this version which he made as an IP. His last edit, under his own name is: this one, where the text is more or less the same (but no pictures). If you don't regard this as a 4th revert, what are my options? He seems to have reverted a well-researched version to an inaccurate, unsourced one. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:11, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ragib. I've written a long post on the talk page of Hindutash. I hope he responds after his block has expired. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 05:23, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Tagore
Hi, Ragib. You know that we seem to have a chronic issue w/ Tagore's "nationality". Now people keep changing the flag in the (bloated) infobox. Can you please suggest what should be done to avoid further mix-ups? Thanks. Saravask 20:19, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks--per what you said, I agree that it doesn't make sense to list either one. I also need to know if "Bengali" is a valid "nationality"--I'm not too familiar with the history and the concept. Saravask 20:28, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm still confused though--if we put [[British Raj|Indian]] in the infobox, some people (like Tarikur just now) will confuse that with the modern Republic of India. If we try to put [[British Raj|British Indian]], people may think we're claiming that Tagore was Anglo-Indian. If we just remove the infobox (like I've done before), someone will just add it back in the name of standardization. And in any case, the nationality field will remain a troll magnet. What is the correct solution here to avoid back-and-forth edits? Saravask 20:39, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
Chandrashekhar
I do not know what to do about that user. He did not respond to the statements made on the talkpage when the page was protected; and even after protection he warred constantly rather than discussing. Fowlerandfowler posted one reference after another.
If you look at his contributions, he seems to function on this project only as an editwarrior. Very disappointing. Hornplease 20:13, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- An RFC can be effective in this case. --Ragib 20:18, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- I will ask around, but, truly, the recent ArbCom seems to have had a chilling effect in that I suspect nobody is hopeful that these editors will either reform or leave; and given that, an RfC will be lot of bickering and unpleasantness with no outcome. I apologise for sharing my sorrows like this...Hornplease 21:55, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello Bhaia
Hello Bhaia,
It’s really nice to see you back after having a wiki-break. I am currently working hard on WikiProject Bangladeshi Universities. I had a meeting with Star Campus authority and it was a successful one. Star Campus promises to help WikiProject Bangladeshi Universities to organize, expand and popularize its activity through their magazine. They also offered us a whole page for our project on Star Campus.
I encouraged my students (I am currently serving as a Lecturer in the department of CSE at Uttara University) to join and work at Wikipedia. I’m also showing them how to work here and basic wiki-tagging. Yesterday while doing registration task for my students from the university laboratory, I saw you welcoming them. You post a welcome message at Upoma’s page. It encouraged them extremely as I talked about you and your educational and wiki reputation to them on the other day. You have already become a hero to them. I am sure, your guideline will motivate them to a large extent.
Lamea, a girl from NSU showed her interest to work at Wikipedia. I told her to collect information with proper references from their university. She talked to their VC and trying her best to improve NSU article. Currently I am strictly monitoring that article so that it can not be an advertisement for NSU. It would be really nice if you spend few of your time at this article so that we can convert it at least to a B class article soon.
There is a personal good news from me. I have awarded full scholarship with a maintenance grant from the University of Dublin Trinity College, Ireland. They offered me both the options MSc and PhD. I took the MSc option (it will take 1.5 year) and planning to move to my PhD from the next year.
I’ll keep updating you time to time with our project activity and other issues.
Regards,

Orphaned non-free image (Image:25paisa.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:25paisa.jpg.
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:48, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Forgive me
I have deprecated Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh and made it Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/History Workgroup. I also have mass migrated the participants from the former project to the new workgroup. May be I was a little too bold here. Forgive me for doing this without consultation. The move was a part of the effort to rehash the entire Bangladesh project. If you and other participants agree, the next step should be deleting the previous page. Hopefully, The new workgroup would improve the level of activity related to coordinating our efforts. Please, respond to my talk page. Aditya (talk • contribs) 21:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
