Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Yes yes, I've requested +EC from ArbCom. You'll note I did not !vote either way, but left a table of statistics for others to reference. ElderOfZion (talk) 13:45, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since you're familiar with the process, you should know that a non-EC editor, you're restricted to making edit requests on the talk page. M.Bitton (talk) 15:53, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it seems my confusion stems from the talk page using {{contentious topics/talk notice|a-i}} instead of {{Arab-Israeli Arbitration Enforcement}}. The latter clarifies the talk page being included, whereas the former does not. When I triple checked the banner, I therefore did not see the talk page being included. Perhaps you can fix it, seeing as I'm still restricted? Thanks, ElderOfZion (talk) 16:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

HelloElderOfZion! I have a question, why did you deleted my edit? NotSoTough (talk) 20:08, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @NotSoTough: Your edit was deleted, because rules imposed by ArbCom dictate that in order to interact with the contentious topic of Palestine & Israel, an editor needs to be Extended Confirmed, by having an account older than 30 days with more than 500 edits. Your account does not reach that criteria. This is a blanket rule with an exception only for specific edit requests; My reversion does not imply that there was anything wrong with your edit, other than falling foul of that rule. ElderOfZion (talk) 20:26, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ElderOfZion You are not an extended-confirmed editor, and are subject to the same restrictions. Your edits to talk pages should be limited only to making edit requests. --Ahecht (TALK

@Ahecht: Per the ArbCom sanctions on Extended confirmed restrictions, "Reverts made to enforce the extended confirmed restriction are exempt from the provisions of this motion." ElderOfZion (talk) 21:49, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ElderOfZion Reverts made solely to enforce restrictions are exempt from the One Revert Restriction (1RR) and are not considered edit warring. They are not exempt from the Extended confirmed restriction. --Ahecht (TALK

@Ahecht: If that were the case, it would say "provision", but instead it says "provisions". ElderOfZion (talk) 22:01, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your edits are clearly covered by ECR. If you continue to try and enforce sanctions on the topic area you will be blocked. Reverting an ECR violation also doesn't suspend the CTOP designation so your reading is clearly flawed. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:27, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He is making rules up. Such a rule would be easily enforced with a simple script. He is deliberately misapplying the rule to talk pages. 187.234.44.229 (talk) 00:52, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because your username, ElderOfZion, does not comply with Wikipedia's username policy. Your username is the principal reason for the block. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy, which is summarized here.
Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change to this account.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username of this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your user talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Important items to note:

  • The new username that you choose must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • The new username you choose cannot already be taken and used by another account. You can search here to see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns, "There is no global account for [username]", that means it is available.

Appeals: If your username is not in violation of Wikipedia's username policy, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your user talk page (this page): {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Thank you. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:32, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ScottishFinnishRadish: Your message on my talk page five minutes prior, gives the unfortunate impression that you were shopping for a reason to block. Could you kindly explain why you know more than the account creation team who created this username, and the multiple ArbCom members with whom I have been in conversation with regarding this account and have not raised an objection to the username? ElderOfZion (talk) 01:42, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Committee is aware of this account. That doesn't mean we approve of its edits or that you have carte blanche to edit as you like. Nor does it mean that we have this account on some sort of audit or compliance list; if you screw up it's on you. We also declined to provide ECP.
As an additional note, I would personally agree that you should change your username. I hope you can see how your username would be viewed as disruptive or pointy. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 02:44, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CaptainEek: That doesn't mean we approve of its edits or that you have carte blanche to edit as you like. Did I ever suggest otherwise? :)
I deliberately chose this username to be relevant to the subject that you know I'm talking about and that ScottishFinnishRadish will strike if I mention it. It was designed to be unclear as to which "side" of the subject I am on, in order to act without perceived bias, applying technical ability without fear or favour. You might have a feeling that something is off, but if I force you to spell out what's wrong with this name, is there actually a contravention of the policy?
While you are here, could you please provide clarification on the discussion above on this page, regarding the wording of the sanctions applied to the subject. It is debated whether the word "provisions" in "Reverts made to enforce the extended confirmed restriction are exempt from the provisions of this motion" refers to just the 1RR provision, or all the provisions of the ArbCom General Sanction, and therefore whether a non-EC account may revert to enforce ECR. ElderOfZion (talk) 10:36, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to clarify the extent of the ECR restriction, that is a question to ask at WP:ARCA. I'm not sure we've had to answer that particular question before, and I can't answer that as an individual Arb. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:10, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
