Whom were in pursuit of 13th notes? %)

Firstly, thanks for pointing out WP:REDNOT in your In Pursuit of the 13th Note reversion. Making page(s) for two of the three people red-linked is someplace on my to-do, but not such that I might be sure of them happening 'soon' - so they're knocked out by the guidance, for that.

NB: Red-links being seen as disparaging is a bolt-from-the-blue, for me. To me they simply say "hurry up an write something behind this". Perhaps we should change them to a nice jolly lime-green, for a better psychological perspective ;) Over-discouragement of red-links would be drawing a veil over for of the Wikipedia 'coal face', which'd be a shame.

However, my edit was doing more than inserting wiki-links. The combination of the cite and the links decoded the full-names of track writers (at 1st credit): C.Bangs is relatively implicit [passable], C.Robinson can be decoded on a nearby page(s) [poor] and I've not seen the R.Galliano pseudonym decoded anywhere on Wikipedia [bad]. Thus, the reversion inadvertently removed salient info' from Wikipedia :(

I'm thinking of a personnel section on the page, which'll make Robinson implicit and provide a place to decode the aka. Does that sound good? DjScrawl (talk) 05:38, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for your feedback. I certainly have no objection about creating redlinks where there are subjects that are obvious cases for article creation or someone is about to write an article themselves, because that does lead to articles being made, but (and I say this as a fan) I'm less convinced that would be the case for these three.

As you've seen yourself, coverage of Galliano around here is pretty sparse. Most of the albums still have no articles (which reminds me to pull my finger out and do them!), and those that are here have seen precisely no material input (aside from yours) since I created them. Hence I don't see much likelihood of someone else coming along and filling those redlinks which will just leave them sitting there indefinitely which (to me) looks a bit crap and to others could be seen as disparaging. I did consider doing a Rob Gallagher article myself a while back but simply don't know enough personally and couldn't google up enough stuff to create anything beyond a vague list of appearances. I'm guessing that Robinson, Bangs and Thin Air would be similarly tough to find a substantial amount about (although happy to be proved wrong). In that case any article created would probably be nominated for deletion by an eager deletionist on the grounds of \notability (note that part about members of bands not getting their own articles unless they have gained substantial coverage outside of their band(s) - deletionists will beat you with that stick all day and night if you can't rustle up some serious sources) and then we're back to redlinks again. danno_uk 15:54, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm happy we appear to be on a similar page, in principle. It's Gallagher and Bangs I'd aim to expand. Although I have 13th Note, I was inside that scene pre-birth and, for me, Galliano (band)'s a little clichéd. Gallagher's a dance-floor acquaintance and, without following him, I independently found Two Banks of Four and Earl Zinger - both ace, IMO. I'm sure there's an article in me :)

I've known Chris Bangs since 1979 and we were close in early-80s. His day-job was at Surrey County Hall, where he had his own office, and I was studying Applied Physics across the road, at Kingston University. A couple of times-a-week we'd lunch in his office, do the Guardian cryptic crossword and shoot-breeze (BTW: We invented MP3 in 1982 - Fact! ;) etc. etc. I was in the room when he was first to use the phrase "acid jazz". Again, there's an article in me and I've been 'sandboxing' at Last.FM.

I'm sure there's a lot of such people in the UK, who were mainly active between punk and high domestic-internet-availability. Chris has good PR skills (esp' graphic humour), but more for others than himself. Otherwise, both do great work, but with a pointedly 'punk' take-it-of-leave-it perspective - too busy with the next thing to press the correct flesh or, otherwise, ensure they get sycophanticly 'noticed'.

I've had the nasty-end of the notability-stick a couple of times. One was a painter/architect and I was simply absent from Wikipedia, when the challenge came. (Pretty sure I could've saved that.) The other was a music management company - while compiling the article, Wikipedia was showing performance problems, so I donated and felt smug for a while. ... The co. manages 40+ big/med' artists, so the initial article was heavily a 'connection nexus'. It got a 'speedy delete', I explained I was simply documenting, would fill soon and had no commercial association with the co. - then, piling insult on injury it was zapped as "Unambiguous advertising or promotion", i.e. calling me a liar and a spammer. (My motivation was more opposite, 'lifting the lid on The Beast', if you will). :/

NB: I was wikiing for years before I started editing Wikipedia in 2006. Parts of the BBC use an intranet wiki(-branch) for documentation. I think, the ethos there was more like what Wikipedia may've been before it changed itself in defensive / passive-aggressive response to the onslaught of spammers / link-farmers. At the Beeb we were encouraged to throw facts in, all facts, with no particular concern for completeness. Fast forward to Jun 2013, I done a lot of Wikipedia editing since June - yet, as a side effect of 'completeness concern' at al, in that time I've amassed bookmarks folder(s) of 100s of fact-links, with "must finish these" written on the 'sign'. ... Something's sub-optimal here, and I don't think it's just me.

Insofar as Wikipedia aims to the pan-cultural, I hope WP:MUSICBIO is sufficiently embracing to accommodate the guys above. DjScrawl (talk) 03:11, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

With regard to the names, Chris Bangs' name is on the page so I think that's pretty implicit. The other names are on the band page. I've added the fact that Gallagher is credited as Galliano to that article for clarification. Again I have no objection to your personnel section. I thought that the information being on the group page was sufficient so I didn't bother with one, but if you disagree then that was obviously wrong and you're more than welcome to rectify it. danno_uk 15:54, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I'll do a personnel section. :) To my mind, partial accreditation info' (without the remainder which provides meaning &/or context is tantamount to conspiracy to pass off.

BTW: Personally, I like art (tracks, or sometimes concept album/EPs), then musicians (people) - bands, labels, etc. are a branding / marketing / distribution / etc. system to deliver the one from the other. DjScrawl (talk) 03:11, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll leave redlinks off (and quit redlinking living persons in general). I've plenty of other things driving my priorities, without self-imposed Wikipidia deadlines as a 'rod for my back'.

I'm more likely to spend hours here, in the coming months, fighting bigoted attitudes of some to Discogs-citations and all Last.FM-citations. The former is my first stop for music info' (one of the most effective / reliable folksonomy site around, IMO). Meanwhile, Last.FM for relative play statistics, genre of med/popular tracks / releases / artists, etc. is unbeatable too! IMO: Wikipidia's music coverage is perverted by over-reliance on sources that are subject to PR/payola influence! DjScrawl (talk) 03:11, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your candour in noting that you are acting on behalf of the company, that is appreciated. I will try to be helpful. Having reviewed the references attached to the article, they are all either dead links or in Japanese which means that I cannot read them and so are not robust enough to support the text that they are with. As such I would have no argument with you removing contentious information such as the tax issues. I also have no strong feeling about the "Pop culture" section which is essentially trivia. What is a problem is the attempt to airbrush Hidehiko Yamane out of the article. If he is no longer part of the company then please feel free to remove him from the "key person" section in the infoxbox, but his removal as company founder in the text is wrong and should not be removed from there unless it is factually incorrect. Also, you removed the link to the article about Ebisu. I can see no reason for that.

With regards to the rest of the text, if you don't want "In the early 90's Yamane introduced a tailoring line, followed by fishing and golf lines. In 1999, he introduced a ladies fashion line called Evisu Donna to complete the development of Evisu as a full-fashion range going far beyond a jeans brand. Evisu now has 65 shops in Japan" then that is fine, but "Today EVISU has gained critical acclaim as one of the ultimate denim must haves, is internationally known and embraced by both collectors and hipsters alike. EVISU is authentic premium and heritage crafted denim wear, with unique style that combines vintage-denim details with modern street edge." is pure opinion and as such is a breach of the wikipedia policy of neutrality. This kind of marketing is not suitable for an encyclopedia.

Hello again. There are a couple of issues with your suggested change. Most importantly, the opening sentence is basically copied word for word from the Evisu website. This is a breach of copyright as the Wikimedia Foundation does not own the rights to that text so it really needs to be rewritten. Secondly, it is also difficult to say that we are being independent and unbiased if we are simply repeating a company's own marketing!

You can certainly change the logo. Click on the Tools section of the menu to the left of your page, click on Upload file and this should open the File Upload Wizard. Sometimes the Start button here needs a few clicks to work. When you get to Step 3, select "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use" and when the drop down box appears mark it as a logo and finish. It's pretty straightforward, just important for copyright reasons that we explain why we are using a logo. If you have any problems I'd be happy to help.

To clarify, what I did is to revert your edits claiming that Mary Carlisle was born in 1912 (without your providing any evidence to support this claim), to the previous version which stated that she was born in 1914, supported by a birth listing and a passenger manifest which both assert the same (hardly "unconfirmed hearsay"). I eagerly anticipate our "getting to the facts soon" but in the meantime will continue to propagate facts as supported by documentation as opposed to stuff asserted by strangers on the internet. National varieties of English

See the top of the article in editing mode. That template that says {{use mdy dates}}? It means to use dates in mdy (month/day/year) format, which is the standard date format for American English. I'm not sure what you think is more "efficient" about dmy dates, but they are not used in articles concerning American subjects. Please do not "amend" them on a whim. Okay, I apologise for that, my understanding was that that applied to mm/dd/yy formatting (which I would never amend) as opposed to textual dates. Nonetheless, as a genuine editor that tries to contribute to this website I don't think that your formal vandal warning is very helpful and is poor wikiquette. Could you not (for example) simply say "Hi, I reverted your edits to X because Y is the the accepted format for dates within US articles"? danno_uk 02:01, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

That wasn't a vandal warning. It was a notice requesting that you not change content or styles (including date styles) from one English-language format to another when not appropriate for the context (exactly as it says). When you added Jessica Curry a little while ago, you not only put the template under the wrong date—it goes under the date the article was expanded if you've expanded it, or the creation date if you created it, which in this case should have been February 5 rather than January 25—but when you inserted the template you deleted one that was already there. It took us quite a bit of effort to figure out what had happened, restore the template that had been accidentally deleted, and move Jessica to the correct date.
