Aerial Top Dressing c.f. Crop Dusting

[edit]

Regarding the entires about aerial topdressing and crop dusting, I think there has been some confusion about the meaning of these terms, which I have helped perpetuate by putting a rather badly worded link in the crop dusting stub.

My understanding is crop dusting pre-dates top dresing, but the two are not the same thing. This is certainly true in NZ usage.

Topdressing concerns the delivery of fertilisers, (usually superphosphate and lime), where as crop dusting initially referred to the use of insecticides and fungicides. I thought it had since come to include the spread of fertilisers, and added the link thinking top dressing was a subset of crop dusting - though certainly I should have made this clearer. In fact, having read your comments I did some rapid research into crop dusting, and note many still seem use the phrase only in relation to spreading posions. I am afraid although I made a number of searches relating to top dressing I did not include crop dusting in my initial searches, otherwise I would certainly have modified the way I attached the link to your page.

Although the material, including the two texts, encylopedia entry cited state topdressing - meaning the spreading of fertiliser - was a New Zealand invention (and indeed the Museum of New Zealand displays a Tiger Moth to commemorate the fact), it is quite possible the parochial pride allowed previous researchers to overlook prior foreign invention, which for some reason did not widely catch on.

I would welcome any research about this that comes to light.

I had meant to add an invitation to others to add details of other nations to the top dressing page, and had been intending to add notes about the development in Australia and the UK when further information arrived. I note that as Eric said, the page is still heavily dependant on New Zealand history and your renaming is probably appropriate in the interim. Winstonwolfe

I know you reported an earlier case of copyvio regarding this article, and while doing some research on it, I came across a potential second case in the article. With some minor changes, it reads very much like this article, and I wanted to get the opinion of someone familiar with the article already before I declare this second version a copyvio as well. Thanks for your time.--Mitsukai 17:51, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Neanderthal

[edit]

In your summary to changes in the Gibraltar article, you say "History - just as chimps today, neanderthals weren't humans - they're hominids)". If we take Homo as human, neanderthals are human. They are also hominids, so the current version is also right.

Note also that there those that include chimpanzees as Homo paniscus and Homo troglodytes. --Error 01:06, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Human says that biologically "human" refers to Homo sapiens, so I'd prefer to stick to hominids to be entirely without chance of confusion. I don't think you'd find many, scientist or non-scientist, who'd include chimpanzees as "humans". — ceejayoz 01:13, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unexplained deletion

[edit]

You should refer to the ongoing discussion in the Gibraltar article page before deleting somebody else's work. We are trying to reach consensus here. So, please, read before delete!

Also, there you go, your first Exodus of Gibraltar quote in English (and from a Gibraltarian source): http://www.chronicle.gi/Opinion/29.1.2003b.htm Asterion 01:27, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nowhere in that article is the phrase "Exodus of Gibraltar" mentioned (it says "forced to exodus", but the debate here is over it being known in historical terms as the "Exodus of Gibraltar"), and even if it did, a) the extrememly low number of Google results and b) the fact that this particular source is an opinion piece makes it irrelevant. The term is not in common usage, that much appears evident. — ceejayoz 01:29, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Ceejayoz, I noticed your name on the WP:AFD page and i recognized your name obviously because of our discussion about the featured diagram and corn issues :-). I was thinking of re-listing the David Mertz article for deletion but wanted to get someone elses opinion first and i figured "hey, i'll ask ceejayoz, his name looks familiar." Check that article out and tell me what you think, it just drives me crazy and seems to be totally a vanity type article. over half the edits on the page were done by the guy himself. i mean...i've published a book and have half the credentials of this guy. just wanted to see what your opinion was. --ScottyBoy900Q 06:30, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the opinion. I went ahead and listed it and let's just say the guy does not seem very happy about it. Kinda proves to me he's using it as self promotion. --ScottyBoy900Q 18:29, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AfD meatpuppetry box

[edit]

Was the box you added to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sopme a subst'd template? I've added something like that to AfD subpages before but your text was a great deal less awkward than mine, so if it's a template I'd like to know which, and if it isn't I'd like to make one! — mendel 06:21, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I figured it might be useful that way, so I did some minor rewording and now we have {{AfdAnons}}! I've used it on the Sopme AfD to try it out. — mendel 16:38, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't leave rude comments suggesting that 4 different people from 4 different states couldn't be using the same computer since we all go to the same university. I really am glad you thought you could question our intelligence when you neglected to even consider how on earth 4 people could have the same IP. Wikipedia needs to know of the rudeness and the inconsiderate motives of some of their people.

I hope I have broken down enough small words for you to figure out how we are all from different states on a single computer if not I will do it like this "We room together for college DUH"

Feel free to report my "rudeness". — ceejayoz talk 20:58, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

multiple people from 1 IP

[edit]

You see in College people are likely to not be from the same place. Sometimes at college kids come from other states just to go to a certain school. Now when 4 kids happen to come to the same school there is a chance they will not be all from the same state. Then there is a good chance they will be using the same computer, much like many fraternities. Please don't be obnoxious and try to sound like you are so quick and smart to think you got us. Thank You with repeated harassment I will notify wikipedia about the abuse you are using.

Feel free to report me as "abusive". — ceejayoz talk 20:58, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there: I saw the redirect that you put in on this page. Strong work. Just wanted to check that everything is covered in the article that you are redirecting to, otherwise a merge may be more appropriate. That way, people that know something about this guy could have time to review the content of both articles, then delete whatever may be redundant. Bc radio history

[edit]

Hi Ceejayoz. Could I get you to take a quick look back at Bc radio history? You listed it AfD, but I think it was just someone putting things up bit by bit. No doubt the page needs work, but I think it's an honest article. Cheers.--Bookandcoffee 17:44, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done; I was using it to track new additions (which are still coming in), since the vandal's ISP is AOL, and his/her IP keeps cycling. Let's hope a range block isn't necessary. -- Hadal 03:12, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Omnislashing

[edit]

I apologize for my redirect. I didn't read the article over thoroughly because a few unencyclopedic articles were recently created from the Limit Break article, including Climhazzard, which had a link to Omnislash, which in turn was a redirect to Omnislashing. You may want to wikify and include categories in the article to make it look a bit more cozy though. Sorry again. ~ Hibana 02:17, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anti-vandal tool on Safari?

[edit]

Hi, you left a note on User_talk:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool a few weeks ago to say that the script didn't work in Safari. Thanks for letting me know. I've made some changes, and it now works in IE, firefox, opera and konqueror. Please could you see if it works in Safari now? Thanks. Lupin|talk|popups 17:03, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

[edit]

Thanks for leaving a comment about the photo. It was taken from the balcony of our neighbours house. Our village is on the top of a hill and their house faces east towards Hemel. We were all woken up by the explosion. Their children came round to tell us what it was and I just grabbed my camera and went to see. A case of being in the right place and the right time.

It's now two days since the explosion and we can still see the smoke during the day and the flickering orange of the flame during the night. The wind has been blowing the smoke away from us and so there's no real pollution here, just a faint oily smell in the air sometimes.

Cheers,

Pete

Can I add my voice to this, too? Please remove this link from your sig. As innocuous as it may be if one user does it, this is the sort of thing that gets abused by spammers and various others out more for their own benefit than Wikipedia's if it is allowed for one user. I noticed that as of March 2 you still hadn't removed the external link from your signature. I assume you just forgot to do so, and perhaps you've since removed it--there's no way to know since you haven't made any talk page edits since then. I wanted to stop by and remind you, though, just in case. Thanks. Chick Bowen 22:52, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Australian flag in your signature

[edit]

You use the Australian flag in your signature, right? If you do, you're going to start having to use Image:Flag of Australia.svg, as the one you use right now (which is a png) is considered redundant and is facing deletion. Don't worry about replacing the uses with the png image, because my bot is sorting through that. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 22:58, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See User_talk:Deskana#72.1.206.178, the user will probably be re-blocked if the vandalism continues, if it doesn't there isn't really a point.
