I think that would be a great idea -- perhaps as a joint collaboration between WikiProject Africa and WikiProject Protected areas. If you do launch such a task force, I'd be happy to join and help. Cheers, –Black Falcon(Talk)03:21, 27 July 2008 (UTC)(Sorry for the late response, by the way. I stopped editing for about two months and didn't check my talk page until today.)[reply]
It would indeed be nice to have more high-quality, recognised content on Africa-related topics. Moreover, many of the articles for African national parks are just short stubs (e.g. Kéran National Park, Diawling National Park) and could benefit from even some basic expansion. After looking at all of the national parks categories for African countries, I think that there may be enough articles to warrant a full WikiProject (not just a task force). Of course, that will probably depend partly on how much interest there is in the project. Have you tried cross-posting a notice at the Africa and Protected areas WikiProjects? –Black Falcon(Talk)15:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's true... In addition to yourself and Bláthnaid, two other users who are members of WikiProject Protected areas have listed an interest in Africa, but User:Banes is retired and User:Jcw69 has not edited in nearly three months. I think you're right that it would be more prudent to start as a task force, at least until there is an indication that a sufficient number of people are interested in joining. –Black Falcon(Talk)16:09, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be interested in working on articles others have started. It would be nice to get some of these African parks on DYK main page feature. I know more than most about the geography, geology, some of the vegetation, and some of the interesting animals that live in the parks that have been missed on a few of the articles, but I'm disinclined to take the time necessary to get an article initially up. I also know some of the political units that sometimes throw editors a curve. If you do get a project of this nature going, please let me know so I can watch the articles as they are created. I can probably only help with West African and Tropical area parks, some southern African, some Central African parks. --Blechnic (talk) 16:16, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK I'll make a posting now at both WP:Protected areas and WP:Africa. It should be a task force to start with so it would be interesting to see what support it would have eventually. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦$1,000,000?16:19, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've notified Bláthnaid and Jcw69 (s/he may resume editing at some time in the future), but I'm having trouble thinking of anyone else. I'm heading out shortly, but I'll compare the members lists of the two WikiProjects in order to find some overlap when I return. –Black Falcon(Talk)16:44, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd forgotten that part. :) I've added my name to the list. Also, I checked the two lists of members and found one user whose name appears on both lists; I will notify him of the proposed task force shortly. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:40, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I had noticed, and I think it's a great idea for assisting navigation. Incidentally, are you using an outside list of national parks or based on articles which currently exist? Either way, it's nice to navigate from one article to the other without having to dive into the category each time. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:50, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had found this website listing African national parks some time ago. Its coverage is rather incomplete, but it contains a number of useful (as sources) links. If I find a more complete directory, I will let you know. Cheers, –Black Falcon(Talk)16:06, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me for intruding on your conversation (both of your talkpages are still on my watchlist) There is an UNEP World Database on Protected Areas here that I find useful. You can search for sites by country (the link is in the left column), and it includes many types of protected areas besides national parks. I try to double check the information in the database against another source before using it on Wikipedia, though. Regarding lists of parks: I've been thinking about starting/improving a few, but I'm not sure whether a list of just national parks or a longer list of all protected areas in a country would be better. List of National Parks of Canada is a good example of a list of national parks, but most countries don't have as many parks as Canada. Bláthnaidtalk19:09, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, good find. Someofthe articles have fantastic images. A German editor called Atamari appears to have done a lot of work on those articles. If we can dig up some sources we could get a few parks featured on DYK, which (I think) helps to boost African articles' profiles. It would be great if some African park articles eventually became FA, but personally I hit a dead end when I work on articles because I don't have access to academic journals anymore, and so can't get the sources to develop them up to FA standard. (And also because I'm not the best writer in the world!) Bláthnaidtalk20:25, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's strange. Even with almost 2,500,000 articles, it's amazing how much en.wikipedia is still missing. BTW, huge kudos for all your work, Blofeld! Bláthnaidtalk21:12, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am able to translate content from German to English (less in reverse), so I might be able to do a bit of translation work with some of the articles. –Black Falcon(Talk)20:49, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've finished the translation. The article could use some more editing for prose, but I'm somewhat hesitant to do too much of that without sources (due to the possibility of introducing original interpretation into the article). I'll keep an eye on the other articles and will try to create them over time, but I will have to postpone that for now (I'm currently trying to finish up a few of my older projects). Cheers, –Black Falcon(Talk)22:38, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note, Blofeld. Looks like a fascinating topic, and I'd love to work on something like this. But, unfortunately, I can't shake the feeling that someone may come along to waste our time with an AfD on it eventually... When last I looked at AfD there was a thread of thought which went that if a person was not the subject of a book, s/he wasn't notable. Thinking like this may be on the fringe right now, but I've seen similar lunacy spread throughout the project before. Actually, no, I don't think I've ever had an article deleted, but just the general pro-deletionist mood has gotten to me. I followed your advice on sticking to editing what I like, but the knowledge that unecessary, time- and content-wasting AfDs are going on daily makes me feel like I'm tacitly contributing to a system in which I've lost faith. A while ago I saw an international award-winning foreign film put up for deletion by an Admin. Now, if a newbie does something like that, I think he should be warned. If a regular does that, he should get a temporary block. But when Admins are doing this, clearly something is either seriously wrong with the AfD system, or with my view of what Wikipedia should be. Before I come back, I'll have to see that the AfD nominator is held to some sort of responsibility-- must show evidence of working on the article, and must be held responsible for wasting other editors' time and threatening loss of info at Wikipedia if the nomination is shown to be sourceable. Either that, or I'll have to become a Deletionist. And I don't see either change coming soon...
Thanks for the note on Anna May Wong. I just got a note saying she's been picked for the front page on August 3... I wonder if I should poke in to see the vandal-fest that will become... Regards. Dekkappai (talk) 21:39, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Se7enMillsandSomerset.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Se7enMillsandSomerset.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:04, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi!... first of all, let me introduce myself..i'm lucio (spanish for lucius) gallo , from Argentina, and my great-grandfather was Mario Gallo :). I noticed that you created his wikipedia post, i was surprised, thank you. the real cause of my writing is that man on the photo it's not Mario Gallo :P, it's Mario Arnedo Gallo ( or something like that), a tango music author... it's a common mistake. so i was wondering if you can fix it, that would be very nice. i don't know how to use wikipedia very well, i'm not even registered, that's why i'm asking you, the creator of the post. Anyway, thanks for your time and i hope you could send me your MSN or mail, so i can send you an original photo of my great-grandfather and stay in touch, bye! 200.126.170.3 (talk) 05:17, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's it!, thank you so much. Of course i would be pleased to help you with the translation of Guerra Gaucha, tell me what part do you want me to translate and i'll do it. Please, i don't know how to upload a photo and all that stuff, i barely can answer you :P, give me your e-mail so i can send you a mario gallo's photo. there's any private channel where we can exchange emails?..anyway, thank you, bye! 200.126.170.3 (talk) 22:01, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not notifying you of this discussion. I checked the edit history of {{Americanfilms1900s}} only and assumed that Lugnuts created all of the templates. My idea in starting the thread was that the templates containing links to multiple "List of American films of [Year]" articles could be replaced (only in articles about individual films, not in general list articles) with a single "See also" link to the appropriate list for the year in which the film was released. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:53, 1 August 2008 (UTC)(P.S. Thank you. If I have time, I will try to translate Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve today.)[reply]
I see your point and the templates undoubtedly do help with navigation (especially for readers who are not familiar with categories); one of the reasons for my concern is the potential precedent set by placing into an article a template that does not actually contain a link to the article. I am not overly familiar with how film articles are organised and interlinked (hence my request for comments at WP:FILM), so it may not be an issue for films, but it could be problematic for articles about people or events. –Black Falcon(Talk)16:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, the "See also" would be a better replacement, since it's more directly related to the topic of the article and does not reduce navigability too much (with a "See also", it's only one extra click to find List of American films of 1929, for example). However, I also see your (and Lugnuts') point regarding navigability for new users. Hmm...I think I will just follow the discussion at WP:FILM for now. –Black Falcon(Talk)16:40, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I may have some time today or Sunday. I noticed someone else was starting work on it too. Maybe I should start from the bottom and work my way up. --Polylerus (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've discovered something quite interesting about the geography of southern Bangladesh. After looking at several maps created during different decades (in a fruitless effort to locate Ahammadkati), I discovered that the rivers and tributaries of the Ganges Delta are constantly shifting and morphing, so certain villages on a map from the 1960s, for example, would be underwater according to a map from the 1980s. So I imagine many of these smaller villages either move or disappear over the years, thus making tracking them down an almost impossible exercise. This also leads me to believe that for southern Bangladesh at least, a lot of these Geographic databases may have rather sketchy information.
Awesome. Don't know if you've noticed, but I've been adding some info to various Mexican towns myself (mostly ones I've been to personally). BTW, I finally deciphered the info from that 1961 East Pakistan census! Now at least Ahammadkati will have a population and area :) Kaldari (talk) 20:11, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is actually a lot of information out there on significant towns in places like Bangladesh and Burma. I think most of the Bangladesh villages you created articles for, however, are just too small (population < 1,000). I've had an impossible time finding any info on towns that small anywhere in the world except in the U.S. and parts of Europe. I think it might be a good idea for us to not create articles on places unless we can verify that they have populations of at least 1,000 or are otherwise notable in some way. Considering how many cities with populations greater than 100,000 we still don't have articles for, I don't think we're in any great rush to tackle the tiny villages of the world. (Although I know most Wikipedians probably disagree with me on that.) Kaldari (talk) 20:22, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Before 1971, Bangladesh was part of Pakistan and it was called Eastern Pakistan. I'm sure this a source of much confusion in modern-day Eastern Pakistan :) Kaldari (talk) 20:26, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Do you have any idea what source was used to generate these lists? Those lists actually have more information than the GeoNames database (specifically what districts and divisions each village belongs to). Is there some other source that has more info on these than GeoNames? Kaldari (talk) 20:45, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, and I imagine maplandia just generates the administrative division info based on comparing the known outlines of the districts with the sketchy coordinates given by GeoNames (as I haven't been able to find any other authoritative original sources for info about these villages). I'll certainly be relieved when we convert all these village stubs into lists, as the info just seems far too tenuous to be presented as separate articles. Sorry again for bothering you so much :) Kaldari (talk) 21:28, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Found the problem - I think you were using an outdated "cite web" template, and you dropped a "/" on a couple of references, which was part of the problem. Should be fixed now.
Hey; if the article is going to be translated wouldn't it be best to leave it in userspace until then? I appreciate it's a moot point now it has been posted, but I'd expected differently from someone who, to quote another user, has "written just about half the encyclopedia himself". When I get the time (probably won't be for a little while yet), I want to work on translating some of the Italian articles about coastal defense towers - there's a huge number of them on the Italian Wikipedia, with almost no equivalent in English. Looks to be very interesting. --User:AlbertHerringIo son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla!15:02, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd eventually like to see an infobox template with some alterable parameters, given how many protected areas fall under multiple designations. There's no real reason not to come up with one - WP:NRHP has been tinkering with a couple, and I think it would be a good idea to take it farther. --User:AlbertHerringIo son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla!18:07, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can attack me all you like, but I am still disappointed to see you leave. My only point - and I think I've been consistent about this from the start - is that one's edit history and how much work they've put into anything is irrelevant to discussions about the appropriateness of articles/guidelines/etc, and that large-scale edits and changes should be discussed first instead of pushed through regardless. The quality of guideline and policy-grounded consensus-based discussion is all that should factor into debates - the amount of work an editor has done is neither here nor there and shouldn't be used in a put-upon manner to suggest that questioning editors are ungrateful - regardless of their own personal editing history or lack thereof. I'm sorry if we don't see eye-to-eye on this, but that's always been my point. Therefore, I'd like to ask that you retract your ad hominem attack. (And, should things cool down, please feel free to rejoin the project and task forces.) Thanks, Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 11:05, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like we need a gentlemen's duel. :-P I think that this long-term situation was unclear at WT:FILM where it seemed more that you were solely provoked by what Girolamo said. If we want to get beyond this, maybe talk to Girolamo about his approach to you and at the same time evaluate whatever criticism you may have received. Find that balance in resolution, you know? I hope you and Girolamo can avoid making this a matter of pride and see what can be hashed out so both of you can coexist as WP:FILM editors. —Erik (talk • contrib) - 14:49, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm disappointed to see you leaving the project, and I'd like to see it as more of a break. I respect you and Girolamo greatly within the project, and although you both may not see eye-to-eye, you are both vital members to the project. The lead coordinator position has little difference in comparison to the other coordinator positions, so I do not believe that he is using his position to belittle you. As coordinators, our goal is to improve the project within, and we have spent some time making changes to past policies, articles, templates, etc. to improve our project as it constantly changes and takes on new articles. I'd say in the future, you need to continue to assume good faith and if you disagree with Girolamo, it would be best to ignore his comments. You're both here to improve the project, and compromises need to be met. My talk page is always open to you, and even if you don't officially add your name back, you are obviously in no way limited to continue editing film articles. Keep up the good work and happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 23:06, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Again, whenever you wish to come back is fine, and the film articles are always there for you to develop further. I've always enjoyed your contributions, and you've done a superb job helping with the task forces. I should always be around, and anticipate your return. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 18:54, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What has happened???? Why do you leave the project? First off, nobody owns this Wikiproject, and leaving is by no means a way to stop collaborating with one particular editor. Secondly, please think of it - I think every editor who knows you and your terrific contribution to the project and to Wikipedia itself, will be shocked to see you leaving the project. Personally I can't imagine this project without you. You are free to do whatever you believe is right, and of course if someone disagrees, you have full right to stand on your opinion and start a discussion. WP:FILMS, like every other Wikiproject is intended for "a group of editors that use said pages to collaborate on encyclopedic work". As for coordinators, "They are not ... endowed with any special executive powers, nor with any authority over article content or editor conduct." - remember that Blof.
I agree with what Erik has said. I think Blof you have to say what you feel and express yourself, indicating what makes you particularly angry and what things irk you at times. Only then will you be able to collaborate with that person or another and avoid many redundant tiffs. Most of what you have said was out of anger. If you are irritated with one person's conduct towards you, speak to him, explain him calmly why you can't stand his behaviour. You're not only a wonderful editor, you are also a great guy - I can assure that - so you are the most indicated person to do that. You know I can also be rude at times, that's why now I feel it's the right way to go. I don't want you to be on bad terms with Girolamo (whom you have known for very long), and subsequently leave a Wikiproject, which you have contributed a lot to. And I will say that again, nobody owns this Wikiproject, all editors have equal rights, so if you are not interested to work with some editors, it doesn't mean you have to leave a Wikiproject they are involved with. So I say that now, and don't you even dare contradict my words: The next time I log in - I want to see you back in WP:FILMS - I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND THAT, because if not - you are in troubles. Is it clear?! ;) My best regards, Shahid • Talk2me15:46, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blo, although I haven't really "met" you, I have noticed your considerable contributions to the project and for one, I would like to commend you for your work and commitment to providing well-researched and authoritative submissions. As Walter Brennan as the Colonel in Meet John Doe says, "Don't let the healots get you down!" (I hope my memory serves me right about the quote but the sentiment is echoed by me.) Hello, I'm thinking a lot of the info can be pared down, especially "Como llegar a Chinandega" (How to get to Chinandega), which reads a lot like a travel guide and may be a copyvio. What do you think? --Polylerus (talk) 15:31, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Blofeld. Sorry, I didn't notice your message on my talk page 3 days ago. I haven't been much on Wikipedia lately, and I can only resume translation when I find myself with the time and mood for it. Hopefully, soon. :-) Best regards, Húsönd17:07, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ernst! Thanks so much for your lovely note on my Talk page. I have just done some additions to the article on Tashichoedzong. I wonder if you would take a look at them and see if they are O.K.? (I am not really with it today - am still (very) gradually recovering from a virus causing severe rheumatoid pain and a heavy fall yesterday where I skinned my forehead and knees (but luckily didn't do any worse damage). Am heading back to bed now to catch up on some of the sleep I missed last night. All best wishes, John Hill (talk) 04:12, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blofeld, remember I told you that Kapoor launched her own clothing line in association of being the brand ambassadress for Globus?? Anyways, I was thinking of adding it to her article. Where do you think would be the appropriate place to add that info? I was thinking of adding it to either the "In the media" section or the "Other work" section. If its the latter, do you think another sub section should be created for that?? Regards -- BollywoodDreamztalk01:52, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Morning mate. I've completed adding in Mattoli's films - can you point me in the direction of 3 or 4 other notable Italian directors who's filmographies are less than complete on WP? Cheers! Lugnuts (talk) 06:58, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what happened to SkierRMH. Based on the banner on his page it looks like personal issues, but I don't know if they are related to Wikipedia. I'd recommend leaving a message on his talk page, since he doesn't have e-mail enabled, to see what's up. Hopefully he returns soon, he is a valuable asset. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 18:41, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I got started on the American composer kick when I discovered, shamefully, that the Dutch and German Wikipedias each have an article on Skilton, but the English did not. Some of these people are remarkably hard to track down - I have a book on American music published in 1930 that mentions both Fairchild and Bimboni, but there's precious little else on them. Carl Busch, now...apparently he was a big cheese in Kansas City, and there's a lot of stuff about him online. Who knew? --User:AlbertHerringIo son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla!21:10, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What surprised me is that Skilton isn't even that important, really - there's almost nothing of his recorded, and I can't find his name in any of my other musical biographical dictionaries. I don't know why someone in Germany or the Netherlands would have written him up. --User:AlbertHerringIo son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla!21:20, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Passing yours soon"? Yeah, right. Even if you didn't make any more edits and I was somehow able to sustain 5000 edits/month even when I'm in college, it would still take me almost 2 years to catch up. J.delanoygabsadds12:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, if all I gotta do is ask, then I am most certainly asking now :) Just keep me informed as the new maps become available, because I'll need to add them to the list of maps the city template pulls them from. I don't have a preference as far as the color choice goes. Consistency would be nice, but since these maps are not going to appear alongside one another, different color schemes on different maps are not that big of a problem. Thanks a bunch!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:32, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the ones we have now originally came (I believe) from the Russian Wikipedia—folks there develop these maps and then put them into templates along with the coordinates. This is not a quick job, as you would imagine, and recently they seem to have paused (I don't think they produced any new maps since the last we talked, but I'm going to double-check). Apart from those maps, I don't know if any other maps are available. What I know for sure is that you can't take any random map and just approximate the coordinates; the map must use a specific projection in order to work with the geographic coordinates. Don't ask me about the details, though, because I am hardly an expert on those matters and am just passing on the information I've learned from others.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:38, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here are the ones available in the Russian, but not in the English Wikipedia (with coordinates):
OK, I've added the new maps to the list used by the city infobox (see Maykop for an example of the new one). Gotta do something about the length of those infoboxes now! The new maps lengthen them quite a bit, which isn't good.
As for the districts (raions), please don't do anything about them just yet. There is only a handful of district maps available anyway, and we don't yet have an infobox for rural localities (which is where the district locator maps are most useful), as we don't have many articles about those rural localities. If you think back, you'll remember that I am working on the database which covers Russian places, and that I am going to share it with Fritzpoll once it's done. Only after that it would make sense to work on the district stubs (which, ideally, should in the end look more like this one rather than this one). I don't mind the district stubs popping here and there occasionally when editors create them on the whim, but a bunch of low-quality substubs about each and every district would at this point be simply disruptive and not very helpful at all. All in the due time. Anyhoo, thanks for your help with the posmaps. Much appreciated!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:25, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do realize that quite well, but I still had to revert to the standard Russian city infobox. We had this discussion in the past, and despite the great number (too great of a number, actually) of options the Infobox Settlement offers, it is very poorly suited for describing Russian cities and I am yet to see it properly filled out when added by an editor uninvolved with WP:RUSSIA—I have to re-do the whole thing every single time someone adds it! Your edit, for example, brands Adygea as "administrative division", which it is not, and loses the distinction between the administrative and municipal aspects of the city (there may be more issues I've missed, but these two are very serious blunders already). I imagine Infobox Settlement works marvelously for many cases, but Russia is not such a case—there are too many Russia-specific peculiarities one has to consider. The plan is to re-design the Russian city infobox to make it shorter, not to replace it with something that so far proved to be a horrible mess and never worked the way it was supposed to. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:10, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that it is an urban okrug does not deserve to be shown as prominently, because municipal divisions are based on administrative divisions, which are primary and take precedence (at least as far as the presentation in an infobox is concerned). The Charter, head, and the legislature are also municipal aspects of the city, but in this infobox they are all scattered across the template. Indeed, if one is not already aware that the Russian places have municipal and administrative aspects, they wouldn't even get an idea of that by looking at the Settlement infobox. Then, what does "self-governing as of 2008" mean? The date is supposed to show as of when the data in the "self-government" section are current, but the Infobox Settlement makes it look as if it's when the local self-government was established. I can go on and on and on. The bottom line is that while Infobox Settlement allows to somehow add pretty much any piece of information, it does not necessarily organizes that information in a logical and/or correct way. The analogy with Ukraine is not kosher either—Ukraine is neither a federation, nor does it make such a clearcut distinction between municipal and administrative aspects of its divisions as Russia does.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:31, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's where I'll probably have to start. Still, the map itself is quite long as well, so the template itself isn't the only thing contributing to the length problem (and imagine the length of the template when district posmaps become available!).
As for making maps work, the Infobox Russian city has a "LocatorMap" parameter, which needs to be blank for the autogenerated map to show; otherwise the infobox is going to display whatever image is set by the LocatorMap parameter. With Kaliningrad, someone assigned a picture of Kaliningrad to that parameter, instead of the "Skyline" parameter, so the map was suppressed. I've just fixed that, but note how the dot does not show on the map, which means there is a problem with the posmap's parameters. Is this something you could look into?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The legend parameter should only be used when one supplies a map that will override the autogenerated map; it's where the caption for that map is entered. When the map is autogenerated, the caption is autogenerated as well and whatever text is in the legend parameter, it is ignored. And thanks for cropping the map image—I was almost about to do it myself :) Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:11, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The infobox does hide optional parameters (unless I'm confusing it with something else), but it always shows those fields which must be filled. That's done primarily to discourage mass addition of infoboxes for the sake of just having them sit there until some bothers to fill them in properly (for me, for example, it takes exactly as much time to add a filled-out infobox as it is to fill out an empty one, so there are no time savings there). Anyway, I'll add Bagrationovsk to my to-do list of articles with half-empty infoboxes and will take care of it eventually. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:21, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, you won't be astounded, not after you learned that India has over 600K places all of which could use articles of their own :) In Russia, the total number of inhabited localities is slightly over 150K, and most of those are situated in Central Russia. The number used to be much higher in the past (according to some estimates, there used to be close to 400K, although I think it's a bit too bold an estimate), but many died out or were destroyed during World War II and never rebuilt, or fell victim to urbanization.
As far as adding infoboxes goes, some of the WP:RUSSIA editors (me included) feel that the longer we can postpone their spread, the better. There are often interesting and informative images that could use a place on top of the article instead of being pushed all the way down because we need to make space for an (often dry and bland) infobox. Of course, everyone realizes that resistance is ultimately futile, so, first, we developed a city infobox that provides good approximation of coherent coverage (as opposed to, as showed above, overly generic approach the universal infobox takes); second, we do not systematically add that infobox to any articles (although we never remove properly filled out infoboxes either), and third, unless infoboxes such as the one you added to Bagrationovsk are filled out within reasonable amount of time (by the original poster or by one of the WP:RUSSIA members), they are simply removed as uninformative and unhelpful. So, what this boils down to, if you want to have decent infoboxes in articles about Russian cities, you need to be prepared not to just add mostly empty shells, but fill them out as well (and it takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to research all of the information needed to fill all of the fields, providing you already know where to look and are prepared to hunt down needed pieces in Russian texts). Ultimately, this is all for quality sake: neither us nor the readers are going to be happy to see articles with infoboxes similar to Bagrationovsk's (as it stands now). Wikipedia has no deadline, remember? I could add infoboxes to all appropriate articles within a day, but it'll take months to make sure they contain useful information and no empty fields, all at the time when the priorities call elsewhere. It's just that we prefer to do things right the very first time—WP:RUSSIA already receives far less attention than it should, and the number of active editors is laughable if you consider the scope.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:24, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Four editors is not a bad start for a task force, but proposing it at WP:COUNCILS could help to attract more interested editors, so I'd be fine with either option. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:43, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, funnily enough I saw you posting at User_talk:Ezhiki, and thought hey, I've seen this guy's username before. Then it clicked....Bhutan. Do you have any ideas on how we could go about re-activating Wikipedia:WikiProject Bhutan? There is very little activity on Bhutan articles, and there are nearly no members of the project. Any thoughts? Ideas? Also, how cluey are you in doing maps? Just recently I expanded ten-fold Drukair, and am needing someone who, if I give them a list of routes, can do up a routemap for use on the article. Any chance you can help with that? --РоссавиаДиалог16:18, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry that you feel this way—I am merely trying to explain that happy stub sprees is not the help WP:RUSSIA needs, even though help is needed and, when properly targeted, much appreciated. If you knew Russian, I would drown you in the lists of things that can be done to help :) Without knowing Russian, unfortunately, one would have to rely on English-language sources, 99% of which, regretfully, are outdated or inaccurate. We want to build the best encyclopedia in the world here, not a compilation of inferior sources, right? Seeing Maplandia quoted as a source (and the only source at that) just makes me laugh nervously, because I had a misfortune of seeing other rely on it and get burned. Many other similar (and easily available) sources are no better. If you remember how closed and isolated Russia was until very recently, such state of the matters shouldn't surprise you one bit. Good sources are out there, but the majority of them are not (yet) available in English, so to build a great encyclopedia one has to be patient and not jump at every piece of dross laying around in hopes it's going to work out in the interim.
Regarding the time zones, Russia has not seven, but eleven of those. The time zones were discussed a while back, and it was decided not to add them to the city infobox, mainly because the time zone information is always available in the article about the federal subject in the jurisdiction of which a place is located, but also because the way the timezones are assigned in Russia is so confusing that it is often impossible to determine the correct timezone without doing some extensive research (and there are a lot of misleading spammish websites claiming to have accurate time zone information when what they offer is, in best cases, grossly outdated, and in worst cases simply wrong). Take a look here to get a gist of the magnitude of this problem.
I can see, however, that this solution is not entirely obvious, so it might make sense to add a parameter that would pull and display the time zone information automatically (instead of relying on editors to be diligent in their research)—shouldn't be too difficult to do once a list of federal subjects by time zone is available. In the end it's all about resiliency, minimization of maintenance, quality, and accuracy, and I am sorry that you interpreted my sticking to those values as discarding your generous help offers. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:01, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just to make it clear, I'm not trying to blame your for anything you did today! I merely prompted you that doing such edits on a large scale would be more disruptive than helpful, but I did not (or at least tried not to) imply that I think it was going to be your intent.
Russavia made his "it's true, really" comment because "Moshonki", in Russian, means scrotums (although the real etymology is, of course, different), so for him and for me it was just an extremely funny name for a place. Since neither of us filled you in on the joke, it is only natural that you assumed it was some important place and went on with creating a stub. It is my full intent to try to find something to add to this stub since it now exists, although I can't guarantee success. Again, I am truly sorry if any of my comments sounded as accusations—not my intent at all. I am just so used to explain the same things to drive-by well-meaning editors over and over again that I can sometimes get too carried away in my passion about the subject. You are welcome on my talk page any day for any reason, have no doubt about that :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You got me quite interested in the Census idea, though—did WP:Films just poll of the members one by one, or was there some neater way to get rid of those who joined the project and forgot about it the next day?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 21:28, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A few months ago TV Land ran a program about the top 100 TV catchphrases of all time; a number of issues stood out, but I'm still angry that they made it so America-centric. There was no mention of "And now for something completely different", which I'd argue changed both British and American television irrevocably.
Blofeld, Blofeld, Blofeld! I'm so very sorry for not being responsive to you over the past week. Trust me, I've hardly spent time on Wikipedia. The only time I get, I just check if any articles I assumed formal responsibility on are checked and any issues addressed. About the removed screenshot, I really appreciate you talking my mind in WP:FILMS talk page. But I had no time for self-defense arguments about the screenshot. I hope you understand. Nevertheless, I'm glad that the article made it to the GA list finally after a long patient wait! How've you been doing, Blofeld? I've made so many editors mad by not speaking to them since quite a while! :( Mspraveen (talk) 16:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great job with them, by the way. I'm sorry I didn't help at all, but I've been working on Karonga (pity there isn't more available like a lot of Malawi), the two peer reviews, the FAC, and yes, Burkina Faso. It does irk me when people say that wikipedia is complete or stop writing stubs, especially coming from people who don't contribute much at al. On a completely unrelated note, may I please please PLEASE! nominate you for adminship. You would receive some opposes, but I think having the 3rd highest edit count on Wikipedia must make people change their minds. And the best part is, you don't have to get involved aty the mindless drama at the AN, you can just continue your excellant editing with the ability to block those vandals that may have not been "warned enough" but whose intentions are clear. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed]14:23, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you want the extra buttons, just ask. As I said, you don't have to get involved in council discussions you can just continue your editing. Also, people love others who work in the mainspace--just most of them are vandal whackers. That role is very important but it seems nowadays there aremore of them than content writers. Heck, for those editcountsies you have more than enough edits in that stupid Wikipedia namespace (all those editcounting tools fail because you have so many edits!) Just try it. I want to see how it turns out. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed]15:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
G'day Blofeld - Yep, agree with EotW, you should go for it and you would pass; just expect a few dozen opposes from the 12-year-old Myspacer deletionists. You'd be saving Keeper and his "talk page stalkers" from a lot of work ;-) Have you seenthis? Do you think the über-deletionists are going to start gunning at Burkina Faso? Just because quite a few people have lost sight of the aims of the project doesn't mean that you have to bow down to them. But you are probably wise to continue editing as you are, without the hassle, lies and bad faith of an RfA. I'm only really back editing this past few days - long time, no see, eh? I built up Template:Comoé on Thursday and hope to finish filling it in later today. I think it's safe to say that we'll beat the bot to Burkina anyway! EJF (talk) 16:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Big-thinking is discouraged, and wanting people to blindly follow the complainant's own interpretation of policy seems to be the theme of all these village pump debates. Hopefully when the current Burkina stub run completes we can do a Malawi-style job on them. Back later (this computer isn't fit for doing much editing!) EJF (talk) 16:27, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Lonely Planet is proving very useful for the Malawi expansions. I'm thinking about buying a subscription to AllAfrica, a news archive that holds over 1,500,000 Africa-related articles/documents from 1996 to today. A year's subscription is $95 but I think it is worth it, £4 a month isn't a bad price considering the amount of information that they have, all traced to reliable sources across Africa. There are some good articles on Burkina places, that could be used to expand transport, politics, health etc. Which brings me to... how would you to suggest we name Papayenga/Diambanga, a place in Gnagna Province? Name it as it is, or at Papayenga with a redirect from Diambanga, or do you think it is supposed to be hyphenated? EJF (talk) 15:29, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've just been using Google Books, as the "limited" preview of Lonely Planet Southern Africa shows almost all the relevant pages, there are very few restricted pages. I won't subscribe yet, as the Burkina stubs will probably take up most of my time, and there are still a lot of Malawi geographical places that can be expanded without needing AllAfrica. It might be the price of several guide books, but it should be more useful! Papayenga/Diambanga was how it was written on the site, I think I'll go for Papayenga (Diambanga), with redirects from Papayenga and Diambanga; although we do have precedent in Biel/Bienne, the slash doesn't seem very common in article titles. Off to work with Gnagna! EJF (talk) 18:11, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why are Spanish politicians notable in the English Wikipedia? Are we going to start a page for every politician listed in every language Wikipedia across the world? ;) Perhaps you should concentrate on listing and translating each politician in turn, instead of creating hundreds of stubs. :) Let me know what I can do to help. Banaticus (talk) 10:47, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They're notable because WP is an information source and many people who want info on Spanish politicos won't be able to speak Spanish and read the corresponding article in es.wiki.x.io. Certainly any politician who is in the parliament of Spain deserves a page here although the members of regional assemblies also automatically meet WP:BIO for politicians. I do agree with you that there isn't really much point in creating loads of one line stubs whose sole content is that "X is a Spanish politician." Valenciano (talk) 15:00, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Blofeld. Concerning Jordi Arquer and others, you might also want to list the pages at WP:translation, your translation request will certainly gain more attention there. Regards, De728631 (talk) 11:44, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that you created a large number of articles based on gaps between the Spanish and English Wikipedias. Is there an organized way that you find these, or do you just poke around? I'm thinking about enlisting several bilingual friends as Wiki-workhorses, and certainly WP:Translation has not been much use. I'd be very interested in a regular way of finding large numbers of small but not tiny Spanish articles which have no equivalent in English. Thanks! Excellent. I'd love to help in setting up a WikiProject to deal with missing articles on an interwiki basis, language by language. WikiProject Translation is far too concerned with big-ticket items, not the small stuff that really separates one wiki for another. As for the current batch, my own Spanish is rudimentary, but it's time for it to receive a trial by fire, so I'm gonna try a few. I will also attempt to induce several bilingual friends to help out. They'll be new to WP, but it's worth a shot. WikiProject Missing Articles could become something very useful. Hm. Mr. IP《Defender of Open Editing》14:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I'm getting tires of those politicians too after only doing 2 pages! I will probably just do some of the Gambian ministers, the FHB peer review (wow Awadewit is amazing) and Burkina. Nishkid and I will probably work on Philibert Tsiranana, over 50kb of content can be added from the featured version. But first I have to FA 1964 Gabon, FHB, LM'Ba, and hopefully JHA. Omar Bongo also looks like an interesting topic, there is nothing in French but being the world's longest serving ruler (that's not a monarch) there should be a lot to write on him. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed]17:50, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I live about 15 miles outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I do have a library about 1 mile from my house but it doesn't contain that many books. For example, I had to travel to Philly to get my hands on Focus on Africa for American explorer of Africa Mary Meader! I will see what I can do to find the Historical Directotry of Gabon. Google Books does provide a lot though. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed]19:35, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've always wanted to write articles about American champion jousters, if I could find any substantial biographical information online. They do exist, rest assured. Best I've managed so far, in terms of obscurity, is a bunch of African artists.
I still working through to find which old names (sourced to GNS) correspond with which newer ones (sourced to 2001 census) - am trying to do it alphabetically by province (in Lori now). As for Yerevan - it's a small place and may not easily have 60 stubs available. But I'll try. Then start on Azerbaijan - wouldn't want anyone to think that I am biased between the two rivals. I am new here sir, I have noticed that a page of the above title about a contemporary Nigerian poet was deleted in controversial circumstances, the poet is fast becoming a household name in contemporary literature circles in Nigeria. I will like us to re-submit an article on him, I will like you to work with me on this. I have already gathered materials from several online sources. I hope to hear from you soon.
There doesn't appear to be a distinction among "town", "village", "hamlet" and the generic "town" conveys the meaning. If "village" is better, it is only midly so, as most people have preconceived notions of what constitutes a village - some of these contain museums, 7th century buildings and such - that may or may not match what these places are. Saying someplace is a town of 400 or whatever conveys what the place is, rather than a village which connotes agriculture with a church, pub, a few shops, and a little old lady who knows everybody's business - Miss Marple perhaps? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 20:21, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is essential that people working on geographical articles realize that words like "town" and "village" have very specific legal definitions that are often wildly different in different countries (and even different states). We can't just make up names to suit what we think is appropriate. That is original research. In the case of Sevazhire, Armenia, it is officially a "Գյուղեր" which is always translated as "village". In Armenia, a town is a "Քաղաքներ" (sometimes translated as "city"). Population cannot be used to make these determinations. In the U.S. for, example, there are incorporated towns with populations of less than 100 (Silerton, Tennessee for example). It would be inappropriate to refer to such a town as a village, just as it would be inappropriate to refer to Sevazhire, Armenia as a town. These articles should not be created by people unfamiliar with these definitions for the particular country. Kaldari (talk) 22:29, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ernst! Sorry you are experiencing such nastiness. It is really impossible to say who is behind such attacks. On the surface it looks like it is a fervent supporter of the PRC - but nobody can tell for sure. All I can find out is that the message originated from a computer in St. Louis in the U.S. Try not to take it too seriously - I have had much more threatening letters than this. All the best - my warm thoughts are with you. John Hill (talk) 21:37, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again! Thanks for your interesting note on my Talk Page. The article on Druk Air is fantastic! Glad to hear you are plugging ahead on other subjects (as am I). I seem to spend too much time fighting vandalism and ill-informed editors - it is such a waste! I have lots of material here which can probably be used to add to your Tibet geo articles - it is just finding time and energy to do it - I will as I can. One of the problems is that the info is scattered through scores of books and hundreds of papers and I am busy working on my own books as well as editing Wikipedia articles on a wide range of subjects from sea silk to Suriname and the history of French Guiana, from tsampa and butter tea to Blackfoot music to Uluru to vampire bats and rabies to Bennett's Tree-kangaroo, from centipedes to Qashqa'i to perenties to scarification - you know what it is like! So, all I can promise at this point is that I will keep adding bits and pieces which I think may be of interest as I come across them. In time it will all add up and I am sure others will also contribute - so please don't despair, O Great Balded One, your stupendous efforts and contributions have not gone unnoticed, nor will they be forgotten! I send you greetings from beneath your feet. John Hill (talk) 09:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A tag has been placed on Image:Silvia Legrand.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Silvia Legrand.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I just (8/11/08) read your last message to Banaticus.
I admire your energy and stick-to-it-ive-ness.
I have been trying to make changes in another area -- but just decided to give up.
I just wrote the following to Banaticus.
Banaticus
Thanks for your recent messages to me (mid August 2008).
I have decided wikipedia is simply (a) too rife with obscure rules and (b) too complicated for me to navigate.
Instead of posting the information I have on Wikipedia and thereby getting into long discussions on (a) format and (b) every little change, I have decided to write and publish a book on Money and the Money Supply.
I will publish this book online on my website and offer hard copies through LULU.com.
Heh, one quality the Great Soviet Encyclopedia lacks is "fascinating"—it's dry as a bone and ideologically skewed. On Tynda, it has exactly four lines of text :) I'll see what I can do about it anyway. Any reason for your interest in this particular article?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:45, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Under Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(geographic_names), for the larger places there is likely a standard English name (Baku), for villages not - one method of transcription - usually based on Russian versions of Azeri names - is not to be considered standard when others also exist. Hence, the default to use the local modern name and create redirects. Articles first, redirects second (WP:CSD#R1). You can help out on the redirects following through the Rayon categories. Thanks Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:06, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, not everything is sorted out as there is a mess of Foo's redirecting to Foo Rayon as well as Föö's (an Azeri Foo :-)) also directing to either the capital or the Rayon. I think that if the editors of those articles have a collective preference, I'm fine with that, so we'll let this evolve organically a while. It'll take a week or two to finalize this - I've learned a lot from Armenia and Azerbaijan was not fully dabbed - which actually can be done much faster in Excel by sorting by name, and see what blue links appear when you make links on a test page. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:15, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It differs, some will (already have) topped 60 - some won't. I was tempted to create stubs but the process they have there is not made for efficiency but for bureaucracy, so I won't get them ruffled and just make them do lots of stub sorting so as not to rock their boat. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was the rayon-by-rayon sorting I was refering to. For a big country like Afghanistan, it may be worth WP:IAR and create the stub categories for each province to save the stubsorters from too much work, but someone who hasn't already had a bad taste from them is more appropriate to be the one to do that. Pick your battles. :-) Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:28, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wake up dude! An editor who does not appreciate your work as I do has nominated this for deletion. Did what I could, but yo no hablo español, senior. Cheers, and peasant dreams. Dlohcierekim 03:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your note. I've run across your work before. You've been a round the block a time or two and don't waste time on NN subjects. The new editor in question needs coaching or couching or . . . one of those "c" words. Dlohcierekim 12:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll definitely have a look, but please look what ComingPresident (talk·contribs) is doing on the Bollywood article. I'm shocked. He removes info, replaces the first paragraph with some nonsense sourced to a stupid source which does not even back up the claim. Please help!!! Shahid • Talk2me18:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How are youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu? I'm exhauted, hardly did I go, and vandalism all over......... Thank you so mych for your help, I'm so happy I have you by my side, and I liked your cool attitude. So, how come an article gets FACed within ten days of creation????????? Shahid • Talk2me20:01, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not a job, some other issues. I'm upset that everything is so bad here. The SRK article is also being filled with unsourced fangush and my edits are being reverted. One editor keeps adding non-notable controversies, I try to explain him why they are not good. The actor's been part of so many controversies, and selecting only three is POV. His new section looks like a fansite, in addition to being poorly sourced (only one controversy is sourced, the one which belongs to the Om Shanti Om article. Read that, you will understand. You see I can't be here. Even when I come, my time is limited and broken. Shahid • Talk2me20:12, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just back on here for a while, I was not active for quite some days as you see... I'm soon leaving Wikipedia completely, it will be very sad to see these articles look like this (particularly the SRK one as it is now), as if all my efforts were thrown at my face. Shahid • Talk2me20:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, that today Bollywood is refered only to Hindi film industry today. But unfortunately some Westerners still use Bollywood as whole Indian film industry. The businessweek article author is one of them, although he used an asterisk to clear, that he means the whole Indian industry. Shshshshsh uses the dumbness of the businessweek author to implicate, that Bollywood (the hindi industry only!!) is the largest in the world. This is vandalism. --ComingPresident (talk) 18:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for notifying me. But I am not sure how much I will be able to help since I will be busy with a lot of other tasks, but still I will try to provide suggestion for the improvement of the templates. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 20:54, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Haven't forgotten about you, I promise. Been a bit busy IRL but slowly finding more time for museums and other on wiki stuff. Saw your Bollywood message, but I had no idea what it was about really. Know less than nothing about the industry. How's all by you? TravellingCari22:00, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Completely agree, AfD extremely broken right now. I swear people don't even google before they nom and while ghits aren't the be all and end all, they help take care of some of the snows. You too, you know where to find me. headed off line, need a nap and dinner. Not in that order. TravellingCari22:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blofeld! I was wondering if I might get your insights on the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dates in Star Wars discussion. I know and recognize you have extensive experience with AfD-possible articles (such as the one I noted and got smacked down on!), and thought that your insights and thoughts (not to mention just 'cause you're way smarter than me in these matters!) might be very beneficial.

OH I know you fill out a lot, hard to do so effectively when someone tags it for A7 as soon as you've hit save. Decided to take that one off your plate. Can you generate a list of museum stubs you've done? Am happy to post to WP:MUSEUMS for people to work on. Let me know. I'll get to your Spanish stubs soon. :) TravellingCari14:15, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sierra Leone Road does indeed look a little air brushed. I forgot about our museums list, I'll go play there too. Rainy half days are a wonderful thing. Will see what I can do. Was surprised to find a lot of info about the above's collection in books. Seems to be a fairly well known collection for its out of the way location. TravellingCari14:23, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very few web mentions in English, books had some about its collection. May also be known under another name but I don't read Thai so can't use those to help expand.
Thank you friend! I'm just having some time on the net (fighting some anon who reverts my sources and writes that Bollywood is not even the biggest film industry in India, but only second, citing blogs!!!). Nothing special though. Shahid • Talk2me16:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The creation is a no brainer in excel with the concatenate function - just have the names, geo coords, admin district, alt names, and cat as variables. I could have also done the stub as a var, but alas, we've discussed that. <sigh> Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:01, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Proposed deletion of Basket Knitter Museum of the Romas
On vacations I have seen lots of "museums" or art galaries which were just a room in a shop devoted to selling postcards, tee shirts, and other such, with out much of any note in them. I expect that some such enterprises find their way onto lists created by government ministries or tourism boards. Grand titles are fairly cheap. On the other hand, a funny sounding title does not prove non-notability. Edison (talk) 19:30, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to let this matter drop between us, as I have no desire to harbour a grudge against you. However, the initial provocation was from you, not me, and I'm somewhat dissapointed that you (apparently) don't see that. Address the concerns that are raised, but don't attack the person who raises them; assume good faith. Try and remember that others are working to the same end as you, to raise standards across the project, but that not everyone will share your ideas of how to move forward. PC78 (talk) 19:37, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WP:EFFORT is not a sound argument; I'm sure most of what gets deleted on Wikipedia was the product of much time and effort, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be deleted. Making such discussions personal, as you did at WT:FILM and then again at TfD, is not condusive to collaboration, and in both cases resulted in conflict.
Moving on, I will say (and believe I have done so already at the TfD discussion) that I do at least find your combined template to be an improvement on the current situation. If I get chance later tonight, I shall give the issue some more thought. PC78 (talk) 20:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(sigh) For the last time, it was your uncalled for "If PC78 you are not willing to replace the templates..." comment that sparked this, so stop trying to turn this onto me. If you do not wish to face criticism, perhaps you should make a greater effort not to invite it? PC78 (talk) 20:36, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(just read your last comment) Like I said above, I'm happy to let this matter drop. I have no desire to move that discussion to my talk page; you can have it if you want, or I'm happy for you to simply delete it, but that goes for your initial comment towards me as well. PC78 (talk) 20:40, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I had seen at Mariano's page you had asked him to help in the film article's translation. As Mariano is scarce these days I took it upon myself to go ahead with it (hope you don't mind). The translation has just been finished. Now it needs some copy editing, and it probably has some typos left here and there. Cheers! -- Alexf4221:43, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou so MUCH!!!! Muchas gracias amigo!!!!!!!!! Thats awesome. Many thanks. As you may know I've done a lot of work on Argentine cinema on wikipedia and the List of Argentine films. I would love to see more articles like this!!! There are some further Argentine movies and actor articles needing transferring from spanish wiki. Could you help me in my quest to get them into English? Excelente!! The Bald One White cat 21:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen your work on the subject. I may in the future, but my main area of editing work is translation and creation of Argentine War of Independence and Argentine 19th-Century history articles which are sadly lacking of are just stubs. I have a long ToDo list of articles and I took this film as a diversion from my usual subject. I would suggest you place a request at the Wikipedia:Argentina-related regional notice board. Not that many people there will jump to help but I'll see it and may take on another project like this in the future. I would also ask as a favor to please give the Guerra Gaucha article a once-over and correct my poor grammar. Also, (this is the extortion part), I'd love a comment/criticism on my work on Portal:Argentina as I'm basically the sole active maintainer and would love to get it to Featured Portal status. Even though I put a request in several places for almost two months, I got not one measly comment or criticism. Thanks. -- Alexf4222:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I'll help you out if I can. If you need some comments just ask and I'll see of others can help too. Yes I'll see if I can improve La Guerra Gaucha over the coming weeks and devleop to a GA The Bald One White cat 22:02, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And, as a second question, I just ran through a list of articles relating to Cameroon, largely redlinks, and added relevant ones to the template (mining, wheat, etc.), some of which I may start as stubs within the next couple of days. So, the question would be: is something like "Prostitution in Cameroon" relevant? (I added it for the time being, as it seems that sex tourism is a part of their economy.) What about something like Rural exodus in Cameroon? Mr. IP《Defender of Open Editing》01:18, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, now I understand. Yes, I certainly am on Wikibreak often (especially in the summer) so do not expect my replies soon! I'm going back to NCM tomorrow but I have to come back for my great-uncle's funeral. He was 90.
Hi, I watch a lot of African pages, you definitely deserve some kind of Barnstar for your excellent efforts. In this case there exist the new Template:Economy of Uganda and the extant Template:Uganda topics which includes an Economy and Infrastructure section. In case you want to save some time and work, vis a vis merging the templates, this note is For Your Information. Cheers. --Mr Accountable (talk) 15:57, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I might when I have the energy for it and feel like doing it. It was more important for the articles to comply with wp:nfcc. Besides, I don't think to have an image is that important, people look at the article for the list, an image is not really necessary there. Garion96(talk)17:02, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep born and raised, though I really have just moved back after stints here, here, various stints here, aqui and here, among others. In other words, wandering star. Been to the England, but not Wales yet. It's tentatively on the itinerary for my next trip. You really learn the length of Long Island when you're sitting on the Long Island Slow/Distress Way on summer weekends. Same with the Garden State Parkway for New Jersey, which has had an exit every mile. TravellingCari20:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can see the famous TCari next time if you want ;) Never seen Woody but I did see Courteney Cox near my apartment the other night and have seen Yogi Berra in Central Park. Macy's *is* ginormous but then again I said the same re: Harrod's in London as well. NYC has changed a lot in the years since 9.11 but I think the improvements have been for the better. Do you enjoy travel? TravellingCari03:44, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Know what you mean re: travel v. money. While living in Japan I had a lot saved (it's not as expensive as everyone says) and had a lot of travel time, I miss that. Last summer while studying in Prague I had a lot of time on the weekends but not a lot of money so it was shoe-string sightseeing. I'm still paying off the round-Australia trip, but it was worth every .02, usually on the logic that spending the money to do something there i.e. a scenic flight] over the Bungle Bungles ($500 at the time) was far cheaper than flying back to NY and returning to do it. Now I have a more comfortable salary, but limited time. Trying to plan where to go from 4-9 December though. TravellingCari15:54, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Orphaned non-free media (Image:RichardMaibaum.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:RichardMaibaum.jpg.
Sorry I haven't responded sooner - been a hectic couple of days around here. For some reason the documentary won't play for me; I'll give it another go later and see if it works then.
Yes I do know that Sandy acts as Raul's proxy for promoting FACs. The problem with 1964 Gabon was that I didn't understand Sandy's problem with the article because s/he had set their preferences differently than mine. Now, Tony has been leading a campaign to remove date links. Nishkid and I (silently) had a concensus to keep the date links, and s/he helped fix Sandy's problem. I simply wish Tony would be more specific in his opposition rather than giving a few examples of bad prose. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed]14:24, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen your list and that's how I know you really know what beauty means! ;) Well this lady died when she was 19 years old in 1994!! She was a superstar newcomer to the industry, but sadly died under mysterious circumstances. Nice to know about your wiktivities. Quite varied, I must say. About me, apart from me labelled as a sockpuppet I've been doing quite a few things such as Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens. Besides this, I've been reverting vandalism and some quizzing when I'm short of ideas. Rang De Basanti has been undergoing an A-class review since some time now. I hope to take this to FAC once this review is over. Vanaja is on the backburner for now as I'm in the process of getting hold of the DVD that has addl. director's commentary to help me know more about the filmmaking aspects. True, the Filipino movie's story seems like a good one. Sadly like many other articles, this one has been under-developed too. Hmm..I hope we have more editors to add on to the pedia. Btw, how's the white cat doing today? And, you didn't react to my sockpuppet labelling? Mspraveen (talk) 16:31, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the time wasting counter would just be perfect to let the bureaucrats know that most of their actions are just weaning away the creativity from many. Well I'm sure they'll argue that this is needed for the "smooth" running of the pedia. Anyways, chuck it..Hey, your femme bot is smashing! ;) Mspraveen (talk) 16:43, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi blofeld, I'm doing well these days. Anxious to finish work and get back to school though. I have been doing some Cambodia-related work, though mainly under an alternate account. (For a while I was actually editing as User:Mangostar. It started out when I was on wikibreak, then I decided I enjoyed hiding out and being relatively anonymous... I'm pretty sure we were chatting a bit then as well! I have now consolidated my identities pretty much.). Lately I've been doing a bunch of random stuff--some image tagging, working on fashion articles (Bryanboy, Tom Ford), a lot of importing from various public domain sources. Just made the History of Belize series, as well as History of Mauritania, History of Qatar, History of Uzbekistan, etc. The LOC content generally is far better than what we have here already. What else is new? I restored a great photo that is up at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Haile Selassie. (Helping combat systemic bias with an African leader.) I wish the geobot project would come online, it looked like it would be fun to work on. What have you been up to? I've been lurking on your talk page less than usual these days, so I'm not really sure! Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:44, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. I am tempted to give up on places based upon the actions of a difficult editor. He complains that the GeoNet Name Server is not a reliable source because humans who work for the agency can make errors. The absurdity of the proposition is that no source is error-proof: books, magazines, newspapers, the web, etc. (see Dewey Defeats Truman and Hitler Diaries and all the errors in reporting on the Anthrax case and the Olympics bombing case, etc.... Well, that editor has decided to nominate one of the places I created - Əngəlan (which seems the preferable name to "Angelan" or "Angalan" per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) - for deletion based on his theory. The debate is on-going, but until I have some assurance that the effort will not be wasted, I may have to suspend work on these. In a couple of weeks, these would look like the Armenian ones of which I am somewhat proud. Pity, because no editor will be able to put together anything on the missing geographic articles unless they are mentioned in something not prone to error by humans (the Bible, perhaps?). Any thoughts? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:49, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Re: Your "Word of advice" message:
I have in fact done so, to a degree. I was working on material within the State of Mexico when I noticed that there were many incorrect INEGI codes. I corrected all of them in this particular state, figuring that it must have been an isolated anomaly. Just for the heck of it, I decided to check on some other states and discovered that it was not an isolated phenomenon. However, I was not about to go changing everything in every other state (originally having no interest in such a matter). I just thought that I would point it out though, since other people with more interest in such subjects might not be aware of the problem. Backspace (talk) 04:18, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll set up the category structure for assessments, using the "African military history task force" as a model; it should be easy enough to modify {{AfricaProject}} to fit our needs. What do you suggest as an appropriate image for the project banner? –Black Falcon(Talk)15:07, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. I just now noticed the giraffe at the top of the project page and on the userbox. :) I'll use that, unless you have another image in mind. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:12, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do. It has a clear affiliation with protection and Africa (unlike the elephant, for instance, which is found outside of Africa) and it's a unique logo (i.e. no other project uses it) as far as I know. –Black Falcon(Talk)15:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that I will have to postpone the tagging. I keep getting a "database locked" message and it is taking me an average of 7-10 tries to save a single page. –Black Falcon(Talk)19:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I realize your edits are good faith, but adding a photo to those navigation templates looks absolutely terrible. I see that other editors are reverting your changes too, so it's not just me. — Andrwsc (talk·contribs) 16:32, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, my English is not so good that I work in the English Wikipedia. Therefore, I work primarily on the German side.
There it is not desirable, if only in the article, the city has x residents - this is not encyclopaedic. We should really be a little more effort. Many settlements that you had created today are also uninteresting, it would be better only places >5000 residents to describe. Pity is that when you write Barajally not had described the special (Jawara's Birthplace).
Perhaps review what I said in the German Wikipedia wrote. Just Yesterday I made a fairly inconspicuous (Devil Point) into a nice small article. Even the History of Gambia is much larger than the English version.

I tried to get someone to speedy keep the images, as many nominations admit that they pass fair use (I'd already become involved in some discussions before finding some that should have been), but someone disagrees at ANI. This one might actually be salvagable as public domain, if it was published anonymously at the time of its creation. Finnish copyright is 70 years after death of author, or 70 years after publication for anonymous works. Is it important enough for the article that it would be worth researching its exact source? About the new replacement, Image:Yone Minagawa3.JPEG, you are aware that you need to document the actual copyright holder, not just some anonymous internet link, right? Because it may very will be affected by exactly the same issues as the other. Fut.Perf.☼09:05, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My time on wikipedia does not revolve around images. I see that is appears to be a Allied Press image. ALl I can suggest is that we contact Allied Press and ask them what their policy is with wikipedia using their images. The Bald One White cat 13:56, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But, Damiens, a "by permission" status guarantees that an image passes NFCC#2. If it then passes the other NFCCs too it's okay. So, yes, asking for permission would be a good thing, in a case like this one where we all agree that the image would in fact be useful. Fut.Perf.☼15:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd create the upmerged templates for Nepal now, and worry about the categories later. There's not enough for even by-zone cats now, and if you create that many articles for each district, it might be possible to skip that layer entirely. Unless it's actually useful for editors, that is. I'll express no view on the articles themselves... They're very manageable from a stub-sorting point of view, so unlike the dreaded data-free asteroid stubs, they're not creating any problem for us, at least... Alai (talk) 19:07, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the zones are fundamentally more useful or important than the districts, I wouldn't bother with templates at that level. District-level templates offer the option of populating the parent, the zones, or the individual districts, as the numberDamiens.rfs suggest. Alai (talk) 19:09, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Blofeld of SPECTRE! Thanks for your action. I was getting round to it, but you know how it is... Stil, some issues remain. You see, in my opinion, the Madeira work group should not be a part of WikiProject Africa, but only of WikiProject Portugal. Madeira, as you most probably know, although technically located in the African Plate (which is not the same as the continent), some 650 km (360 mi) off the North African coast, belongs ethnically, culturally and politically to Europe, some 955 km (583 mi) from the European mainland. Furthermore, the work group banner is still a sub-group of WikiProject Africa - this, at least, should be changed. I do not, however, known how to do it. Do you? See you soon! Cheers. I just saw User:Gangsta36t, and found some "interesting" barnstars. Some of them were given apprently by... YOU!!! At first I thought he is a well appreciated editor who's received many barnstars by different editors like you and John. It took a few minutes to get that these barnstars were copy-pasted from my userpage!! In other words, this user copied barnstars you've given me, replacing my username with his!!! It's annoying. His whole userpage is filled up with barnstars which belong to other editors and which were copied deviously. What do you have to say? Or do you want to ignore the fact that someone uses barnstars awarded to other editors by other editors, using these other editors' signatures (yours included!!)? Hey buddy!! To make things more clear to me, I need to ask you something! I was wondering if the words "cosmetic beauty", "bubbly", "talkative" & "femme fatale" could be used in these following three sentences on Kapoor's article:

"Kapoor played the female protagonist Geet Dhillon, a bubbly and talkative Sikhni girl with a strong zest for life."
"Following the success of Jab We Met, Kapoor starred as Pooja Singh, a femme fatale who seduces men to achieve her goals in the action-thriller Tashan (2008)."
I am pretty sure that the second sentence is fine but I am not sure about the first and last one. If the following two words cannot be used, could you please think of new words to replace it?? Currently, I only have one for the latter!! "Kapoor starred as Pooja Singh, a woman who seduces men to achieve her goals..." LOL?? Is that okay?? :)) I really can't think of a word to describe her role in the former. (P.S. Please let me know if the second sentence needs to be changed too. I will try thinking of a new way!! However, if you come up with a better version, feel free to add it to the article.) Best Regards -- BollywoodDreamztalk22:57, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! What great work you have been doing! Thanks so much for moving the Definitions of Tibet to a separate article - I had been wondering how to shorten it (so it would not overwhelm the Tibet page) - but this is a much better solution and, because it is such a bone of contention, I think it really does deserve a separate article. I will add some more material from Migot to it today.
Now, about Portail:Tibet - I think it is really great. I am not sure what you are thinking of doing, but it would seem hard to improve on it. The easiest thing would probably be to just lift the whole page and translate the French. I could, with some difficulty, do the translation if necessary - but there are probably a number of others out there who could do this more quickly and with less effort than it would take me - but don't hesitate to ask if you would like me to give it a go. Then, I am not sure how to position the page and make the appropriate links necessary for the English Wikipedia, although I could probably find out. Please let me know what you are thinking and if and how you think I may be able to help. All best wishes, John Hill (talk) 23:59, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Blofeld. How have things been going? Your talk-page lured me out of retirement to make a comment here. I've been toiling away at a non-work-safe Wiki that welcomes contributions and has not yet become a magnet for "Let's see how much I can delete today"ism (knock-on-wood), and finding it all very fun and fascinating. It was a very unimpressive deletion nomination, basically mocking and trolling. I think it could be possible to write a more up-to-date essay than the Meta essay, which is quite outdated and rambling. The problem is, although Wikimedia won't be liable for any copyright infringement, we are; I don't like the idea of being tracked down to rural Northern Ireland and being taken to court, at least you've got your Japanese volcanic lair to escape to!
I'll try to do some editing this evening if I don't cough and sneeze too much, I'll watch the honey-hunting documentary is well, looks interesting. I clicked the random page button about 50 times and it seems you've edited or created at least 10% of them, there are a few south-Asian places I might expand some day soon. About the African economy templates, I think I can give that a go. Some the arguments are really silly; when is "non-notable picture" ever been a rationale for deletion??? Yeah, best just to leave blank unless there are stats in the article, even with 90%+ places mostly Hindu. You'll get the deletionists screaming "THIS ARTICLE LIES!!!!1!1!!" and speedy deleting it if they find out the village is mostly Buddhist... EJF (talk) 14:25, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
the number of former buildings is interesting. Are you in Cardiff? I have seen only a blurry photo of the old building, listed as haveing been in Edward place and as having been sold in 1918 when a new synagogue on Windsor Place was consecrated. The photo says that the building is at the rear of the Capitol cinema. The windows raise the possibility that the building was in the Moorish revival style. the date is right and Cardiff was a sufficiently important/prosperous city to have had a Moorish revival synagogue. If it is one, that is notable and I would have a use for a good photograph.Elan26 (talk) 23:55, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Elan[reply]

Yes I very much appreciate your comments--my object is to bring that article to FA-standard. I am more of a content adder than MOS guy like Sandy or Tony! It simply disturbs me to see a user like Damien, after tagging a great number of acceptable images, making fun of your spelling--mine ain't that great either. It's funny the controvercial image was on Yone Minagawa. I was once active in the supercentenarian area, promoting Lazare Ponticelli to FA. That may be one of the reasons I was accused of being Kitia--he was, as I noticed, very active in the area, and his/her disruptive editing ultimately got him/her banned. The supercentenarians area produced a number of blocks: besides Kitia, Ryoung122 was also blocked indef, Bart Versieck was been blocked many times in the past but still is editing, and NealIRC was blocked for a month and never returned. I thought of adding one more critic quote to Zinta. As of now, there is a BBC quote (I added it because it is widely considered a reputable source), but I want another quote, which is much more elaborative, clear and constructive. I need your advice to know whether the quote is OK or not... (On Reese Witherspoon's article, every performance is followed by two three quotes each)... Talk 2 u later. Shahid • Talk2me18:37, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, the BBC quote for Preity's role in KANK is short. I added it only because of BBC's importance as a source. Here's another quote describing Zinta's performance in KANK: "The lady has not just looked glamorous but she has walked with poise, sat with grace, smiled with composure and spoke with calmness. Who would have thought that the bubbly girl could so skillfully shed her age-old tag and walk away as the don’t-mess-with-me lass. So all those who are in search of the peppy Preity, well guys you’ve dialed the wrong number this time."
I find the quote important, because that's exactly what she wanted to do, to shed her bubbly image with this mature role of a modern married woman. What do you think? Shahid • Talk2me07:54, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that every article can get better. I certainly don't want it to become like Reese Witherspoon's article, which is complicated, full of quotes (critics' quotes as well as hers). But I believe that it has to get better. I believe since the FAC it has only improved. The Dil Chahta Hai part was expanded, the Jaan-e-mann part too (I changed the quote, it's a bit critical of her role and she's criticised, but I like it nonetheless). Now I think of splitting the success section. All of her new film are going to get premiered. Heaven On Earth in Toronto Film Festival, The Last Lear in India, Heroes in October -- I must succeed in adding all of that on time (before I leave), and it does stress me.
As for the quote:
A) Do you find the quote constructive and well written?
B) If I add that (see the KANK part), will it be better to remove the BBC quote?
Right, but do you think that it will have to replace the current BBC quote, or just be an additional quote? (I mean should the existing BBC quote remain?)
Secondly, do you think the quote contributes something encyclopedically too in addition to general response to the performance? Please read the quote - is it appropriate and constructive? (Sorry if I bother you too much) Shahid • Talk2me20:36, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One thing is for sure we need to come to a solid conclusion legally about what qualifies for fair use as many of our existing images are being used in the same way that the image your removed of Soe Win was. If you think that the current policy is redundant then I would seriously suggest you go about it in a formal discussion rather than picking on isolated images uploaded by myself. The Bald One White cat 21:30, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because even if I had stated that Corbis was the owner of the image and added every detail imaginable you would have still claimed that we couldn't use the image because of payment issues. This applies to many of the images we have on here. The Bald One White cat 21:34, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you understand that the sole/main source of income of photo agencies (like Corbis) is to license images like those for a fee? What makes you believe that, as long as we put a template on the image description page, we no longer have to respect Corbis copyright? That template explicitly asks for a non-free content rationale, and a valid non-free content rationale would have to explain why is it ok for us to freely use an image in a way that any other publication in the world would have to pay for. Your rationale didn't even tried to explain that.
There's nothing wrong with our policies or our templates. As long as we use them correctly, and keep in mind that they can't do magic for us. --Damiens.rf21:46, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Blofeld, for what it's worth I think Damiens.rf is right about the photos. It is very hard to justify using photo agencies' images without payment. When you are uploading images, I would try to find images that are released by governments or political campaigns where possible - these were probably not intended to be monetized, so a fair use case is stronger. See, this is what bothers me, and, ultimately, what drove me away from even attempting to work with images: Within two minute's searching just now, I found this and this. These are images which, to my understanding, clearly fit within Wikipedia's policies-- one of them is probably even Public Domain. Yet someone has deleted them, rather than fix the image descriptions of two proper images. People who delete perfectly appropriate images and articles like this are never held responsible for their actions. Indeed they are far more likely to be granted Adminship through this sort of activity than to get the slightest warning. I have complained about this kind of... vandalism, I don't think is too harsh a word... and been told repeatedly-- "Don't worry. You found it missing, now you fix it. Isn't Wikipedia working fine?" Meanwhile, someone's time and effort in uploading these images was wasted, my time and effort in replacing it duplicates that work... somewhere down the line someone's going to get a bot to delete my replacement images... and at least one of us has grown frustrated enough at this sort of abusive and reckless deletion to leave the project. (And Blofeld, thanks for the message. I'll mill it over for a week or two and get back to you :-) Dekkappai (talk) 23:30, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
except this is entirely different, in that these images plainly are not acceptable, no matter what anyone writes on the image description page. just to see, i registered at getty to check out what they're charging for the licensing of their photo. $287 for web resolution (250x300) for 2 years! we cannot just use these images for free. wikimedia's nonprofit status does not give us blanket permission to use images without paying. Thank you for uploading Image:Yone Minagawa3.JPEG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
Thanks for uploading Image:LeopoldoTorresRios.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talkpage. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 13:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Noticed the other names of the region i.e. Perekeshkul’, Perekischkjul, Perekishkyul’, and Pirekeshkyul’, but I did not understand why they use a quotation mark at end. Do you have any idea? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 16:04, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No idea. Some of the middle eastern names are quite peculiar. Hopefully Carlos can copy my example and sort of navigation plates for all the rayons. Armenia included The Bald One White cat 16:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would hold off on the niceties until all the essentials (redirects) are completed as there are some dabbings (and moves) that will need to occur and having templates to change as well makes the task harder. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that's not what I was referring to. I think that the WP Azerbaijan should figure out what the naming convention should be. The Anglicized names on the missing places lists are a mishmash of stuff missing diacritics. The only big difference between Turkish and Azeri orthography is the schwa, which the Azeri WP should figure out what to do with. What I meant was that some of the places have the same 2 or 3 names and GEOnames has fixed on a standardized one; these are better dabbed so that someone looking for Dzhafarli (old orthography) or Cəfərli (new) can find them either way or by looking for alternates such as Dzhafarly, and by typing without diacritics Cafarli (BGN way of treating "ə" as "a") or Ceferli (other way of treating "ə" as "e") - which leads to the inevitable: if Azerbaijan WP decides to do away with the schwa in titles, which way will they choose? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:52, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Azeri WP hasn't published a convention for use of Azeri names as has other projects, they probably ought to consider doing that. I don't WP:OWN the articles; if the WP wants to move them, it may certainly do so. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:12, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blofeld, I need your help once again. Apparently, these three images on Kapoor's article (Image:Kareena in K3G.jpg, Image:Chameli (Kareena Kapoor).jpg & Image:Kapoor JabWeMet.jpg) have been nominated for deletion. All three of the images have a clear fair use rationale indicated for the use of the image. However, I don't know why it is being nominated for deletion. I am not sure what it is they are looking for! Could you please take a look and see what the problem is?? I would really appreciate it. Sorry, my friend, I have checked everything here that might have a bearing but nothing mentions a "battle of five lamas". Matthew T. Kapstein's book, The Tibetans, pp. 155-156, has a reasonably detailed account of Ngawang Namgyel coming to power, and some of the backgound to it - but there is no mention of a definite date for the setting up of a separate state, or any war in 1634. I have now checked quite a few other possible sources but am no wiser for the search. Will certainly let you know, though, if anything turns up. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 11:07, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Someone added that information into the article on Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. I am too tired tonight, but, when I am not too busy and feel up to it I will check to see if I can discover who that was and ask them where they got the info from. Night, night, John Hill (talk) 11:36, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
An English translation of the Biography of Shabdung Ngawang Namgyal by Sangay Dorji is going to be published in September. This contains the relevant material. Basically Shabdrung had trouble with the hereditary followers of five different Buddhist traditions already established in Bhutan (the list of the 5 varies somewhat between sources) - they fought with him themselves and encouraged the Tibetans to attack him. He came to an accommodation with two of these groups (the Katogpa and the Chagzampa) when they eventually submitted to him while the leaders of at least two others (the Nenyingpa and the Lhapa) were banished from Bhutan.Chris Fynn (talk) 20:39, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like Beta is reported to ANI again, I wonder how he could be an admin.....I believe AfD should be the last place for editors after trying to fix articles, but oh well deletionists as claiming for fresh start disguise the spirit as well. By the way, is Dekka coming back?--Caspian blue (talk) 11:20, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Damien. ANy idea how we would go about finding permisssion to use the image of the baby with two heads seen here. The image is used on all the news sites but has obviously been sold to these people so I haven't uploaded it. However do you think its possible to find out given that we will never get another alternative to identify it. The Bald One White cat 13:43, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would say this is a difficult case. Have you considered using an artist's impression? I mean, to contact someone with drawing skills, provide the all available information about the unfortunate babe, and have him to make a drawing and release it under a free licensing. I believe there's something like a "Drawers Wikipedians" project somewhere....--Damiens.rf13:47, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
