French

[edit]

Bonjour Atlant! I've just come across your message (from late 2005 I think) saying that you are learning French. If you need any help or have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I am very familiar with the problems of anglophones and their lexicon in the apprehension of French, that is to say, I can probably tell you how/why something is said in a particular fashion. Hope to hear from you! I am glad to see that you are not taking the Bill O'Reilly approach of hating the French. If you ask me, I think he has an inferiority complex (he has no culture). --Aquarelle 13:36, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My principal problem is that I'm still somewhat afraid to actually speak French, although last fall I spent some time with a private tutor who helped me a great deal with both pronunciation and grammar. The key for me will be when I finally believe that I have enough of a critical mass of the language to not fall flat on my face as a fool. I'm getting close; among other small victories, I'm registered and have actually made one or two sensible edits in the .fr Wikipedia.

I am glad to see that you are not taking the Bill O'Reilly approach of hating the French. If you ask me, I think he has an inferiority complex (he has no culture).
An unfortunately large number of Americans seem to be "ignorant and proud of it", willfully maintaining that ignorance of the fact that there's a whole world out there and things to experience besides what they see on their TV sitcoms each night. Sadly, right now, they seem to hold sway in this country, much to our (and the world's?) long-term detriment. Speaking for myself though, I've enjoyed all of my travels around the world including my three trips to France, and my wife and I would be very happy to go there again; she's been showing me a lot of Internet travel sites in a sort of "nudge-nudge" fashion and I hope to accommodate her soon. This time, she wants to stay down nearer the Seine; last time we stayed up on Montmartre. (One of the photos in the Montmartre article is mine as are all of the photos in the .en version of Canal Saint-Martin.) We'll probably get back to Montreal before that though; it's a little close to New Hampshire than is Paris.
Thank you for writing! I've noticed your name around Wiki, so I'll keep you in mind if I ever get brave enough. ;-)

Locking LocalTalk

[edit]

Nice edit on LocalTalk. But are you sure the Apple ones were locking? All the Apple connectors I saw used a miniDIN. While they didn't exactly jump out of sockets, they didn't "lock" either. Maybe it would be better to say the PhoneNET ones offered more resistence? --Steven Fisher 01:45, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But are you sure the Apple ones were locking?
Pretty sure. The Mini-DIN-3 connector wasn't exactly standard. IIRC, it had a little latching tab that was automatically depressed when you pulled back on the body of the connector. I still have Apple LocalTalk boxes and cables, Farallon PhoneNet boxes, and some Belkin PhoneNet knock-offs; if I can remember, I'll shoot some pictures and add them to the article.
Atlant 12:00, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sure is good enough for me! --Steven Fisher 21:44, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SWfanatic09

[edit]

You recently blocked SWfanatic09 (talk · contribs) and there's no doubt this block was appropriate. The user is now requesting that he be unblocked. While his reason is dubious, I'm inclined to give him a second chance. Could you please take a look and then either unblock this user directly or let me know whether or not you think it appropriate for me to perform the unblock. Thanks. --Yamla 23:39, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answering medical questions on the Ref Desk

[edit]

Er, I'm a bit confused by your response to the question about changing eye colour as a symptom: [1]. You said "On the other hand, it certainly has been known to occur without being associated with any particular morbidity..."; I thought I had indicated that in my response already–Indeed, that was the first part of my answer. In any case, that's not particularly important.

I just thought I'd drop a line to ask you to be careful in how you respond to medical questions. Giving a response which encourages the poster to believe that the symptom is harmless and which doesn't encourage the poster to seek professional medical advice can be risky. Short of actually performing a medical exam, we can't know if this individual's change in eye colour is benign or symptomatic of more serious illness, and it's irresponsible for us to give responses that may provide a false sense of security and a delay in (proper) diagnosis. I hope you'll suitably amend your response. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:16, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. It would probably be a good idea to advise the poster to seek professional medical advice, as well. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:57, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You already did ;-). But I think iris color changes are more common than you think. For example, almost all human babies change iris color in the first few years of their life.

You wouldn't mind not stalking me would you? Thanks.--Rotten 15:37, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not stalking you. But as an administrator here, I'm well within my rights to see that everyone (including you) follows the rules we've set out here. And you, BTW, just broke the Three Revert Rule. But I'll discuss that with you on your user page.

Editing My Blog

[edit]

I'm jshephard. I wasn't trying to get my blog promoted, but wanted others to read what I had to say. How do I make my blog valid without being deleted?

You probably can't; Wiki prettty strongly discourages the linking of blogs; sorry.

I don't understand your post about Purgatory. --Dweller 12:47, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Go read the Steambath article ;-).
Atlant 12:51, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is ridiculous! Incidentally, I'm not sure the Steambath article is wisely named. I assumed it was an article about Steambaths, which is why I didn't understand the comment. What do you think? --Dweller 14:59, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're absolutely right about the article name; it should probably be "Steambath (stage show)" or whatever the convention is for the parenthetical disambiguator.
I'm not sure I understand what you think is ridiculous, though. Perhaps you can clarify?
Atlant 15:11, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The premise of the show. It's hilarious. I'll do a page move and create a stub with disambig. --Dweller 15:13, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archive?

[edit]

You seem to get a lot of anon-vandals. I caught one. :-) Also, you might want to consider archiving this page - it's a bit excessive. --.ιΙ Inhuman14 Ιι.( talk | contrib) 02:33, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reverts! That particular anon doesn't like the "Homosexual interpretations" section of our Batman article. I have no particular interest in that section one way or the other, but it looks like it was accepted by consensus in that article so I certainly don't allow random anonymous editors to come along and wipe out whole sections that they personlly oppose.
With regard to archiving, it's been my intention for a while to make a new archive, but the browser I use most commonly tends to screw-up on such big edits. But with your prompting, now it's done.
And "Thanks!" again!

Personal Attack

[edit]

I am not sure of what prompted you to throw on my talk page an accusation that I would have made a personal attack, but I am redirecting this accusation to you. You cannot gratuitously, like this, accuse people on their talk pages of making personal attacks on such weak grounds. The comment that I made certainly was not an attack and was fully supported by the previous comments made [2] [3].

At the very least, you could have thrown your accusation to the author of this last edit as well for his comments towards the new editor, but your behaviour has targeted me specifically and I do take it personally. Besides, if you would have waited no more than a few minutes before setting me about, you could have followed the discussion further [4] [5] and notice that there was not much to talk about.

I will take for granted that this was only a misunderstanding, but apologies seem in order and would be appreciated. Regards. --Childhood's End 13:53, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's no misunderstanding and I stand by my statement. And if you continue commenting in a fashion that violates Wikipedia policy, I will block you for your actions. The choice is yours.
Atlant 13:57, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You certainly will explain me how is this [6] not a personal attack and how this [7] is. I expect something very clear so that I can act accordingly. --Childhood's End 14:06, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
William M. Connolley's already been warned by someone else -- see [8]. And even if he had not been, that doesn't excuse your bad behaviour; you're still responsible for your actions. So please don't Wikilawyer me; you were wrong, you've been warned, and if you violate the rules again, you'll be blocked.
Atlant 14:33, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So I'm the one wikilawyering? This is again baseless and is getting insulting. But I'll at least for a few lines enjoy this unfortunate status and explain what, in my opinion, you did wrong.
True enough, the fact that someone else acted badly does not excuse my own behaviour. But this does not mean that you are allowed to ignore the appropriate context when throwing around accusations of "personal attacks" and block threats.
You have just pointed out that William M. Connolley's comment deserved some warning, but it seems that no block threats or personal attack accusations have been issued in this regard, and that you have focused your "remedial actions" on myself. Yet, my comment was made after William's comment and was a legitimate criticism of his. Perhaps, it was uncivil and could have been formulated in a more politically correct fashion, but it was not a personal attack and it was not in violation of WP:AGF as you implied. AGF is not required in front of such comments.
As an administrator on Wikipedia, you can issue blocks and warnings, but you must exercice these privileges with care, and not arbitrarily. Your involvement in Global warming appears to be low, and if you undertake to roam the talk page and issue warnings to some editors, you must do so objectively and in acknowelgement of the context. I was specifically pointed out in your block threat while my edit was a reaction to a previous comment that, as we both see I hope, was clearly deserving of criticism and was quite more uncivil than mine. Of further concern is that it came from an administrator.
Perhaps I should also point you out what the now defunct code of conduct suggested to administrators : Admins should also be aware that warning a user of a block, especially when the user has no prior history of problems, can be perceived as a threat. When dealing with otherwise good contributors, it may be advisable to make suggestions to their behavior without mentioning a block.
I thank you for your consideration and although I would still expect an apology for the "personal attack" accusation and this block threat, which were way over the board, I will only suggest that you weigh carefully your words (and threats) when exercising what you seem to consider your patrolling duties. I would have quietly considered a simple notice telling me that you viewed my edit as "uncivil".
Again, regards.
PS: I've been the victim of much more uncivil comments and have learned to go without complaining. --Childhood's End 15:44, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Any time you feel like you've been treated unfairly, you can always raise your complaint at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents; many folks from the Global Warming controversy routinely do so.
Atlant 15:53, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I avoid these things as much as I can. As I said, I can move on without this procedural bickering as I know that heated discussions are common in the global warming pages and should be considered with a grain of salt. --Childhood's End 15:58, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Worry not, Childhood's End. Your comments haven't come close to attacks and incivility William demonstrated many a time, especially to good-faithed contributors who are new to the article. His behavior has driven away newcomers in droves, unfortunate as that may be. Be aware, however, Atlant is known to arbitrarily block people with whom he disagrees in opinion. ~ UBeR 19:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've been taking a look at Atlant's recent block and block threats history after our "discussion". I see that between 16:17, 27 April 2007 and 17:21, 27 April 2007, he issued 9 blocks and/or warnings within 21 contributions. Some are obviously legitimate, but I'm a bit puzzled that through all this patrolling activity, he couldnt even issue a warning about [9]. I'm also disappointed by his refusal to merely apologize, either here or on my talk page. Honestly, I do not know what to think right now. --Childhood's End 20:01, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't like what I'm doing, I've told you how to appeal things and as a lawyer, I'm sure you understand the process. But don't use my talk page as your personal place to kvetch. As I've said, I have no intention of apologizing to you for anything I've done.

Multiple revisions

[edit]

Is it possible to revert more than one revision at a time? Or must you be an administrator to do that? Cool BlueLight my Fire! 16:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can do it, but not via one button. Here's how:
  1. Go to the article's history page
  2. Click on the date of the revision that you want to revert to (reinstate); that version will be displayed
  3. Click "edit"
  4. Save that version
Administrators get a handy button that will "rollback" all the contiguous edits by one editor, but even we have to revert to the described method if there's more than one vandal at work or someone did a partial recovery from some vandalism.

Incandescent light bulb

[edit]

Thanks for the block of the recent IP vandal. Looking at that IP talk page shows why it is pointless to post warnings, since being repeatedly blocked has not slowed them down. Could you reming me of whether it is a 3RR voiolation for me to revert them multiple times. when the material removed is just the alleged sexual habits of their classmates? You may revert blatant vandalism any number of times with no fear of being blocked. And I know you've been around here long enough to understand the difference between a content dispute (where WP:3RR definitely applies) and the average school-kid vandalism.

Block threats

[edit]

Re your official warning: Stop threatening to block me on Talk:Cow tipping. First of all, blocking me for edit warring when I reverted roughly on an average of a day for a pretty short time and actively edited the talk page while others (including yourself) were edit warring far more is just never going to fly. I'm not edit warring at all. I'm not even reverting anymore, so please knock it off with the block threats in that avenue. In any case, blocking a person that you are reverting when you refuse discussion, instead throwing around acronyms, is an empty threat and you know it, as is blocking me for calling your threats into question, no matter how many acronyms you can pull. I'm tired of getting threatened by you, and I really don't want this to escalate (and it won't do so by any prodding from me), but I guarantee you if it does, it won't go well for you because you have no ground to stand on, especially with your soapboxing about how Wikipedia doesn't allow humor. So please: stop it with the block threats, stop picking fights, and stick to what's relevant about the article. Milto LOL pia 18:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here's what I had to say:
Comment': Please note that I'm still fully prepared to block edit warriors. I'm also more than willing to remind people that "immature and disgraceful" is a violation of WP:CIV, WP:NPA, and WP:AGF; Milto LOL pia, please consider this an official warning to you.
As you'll notice (note the semicolon), the only "warning" directed against you specifically is for incivility, personal attacks, and failing to assume good faith (as evidenced by your use of "immature and disgraceful" in my direction), and I stand by that. If you disagree, you can always take it to the incidents page of the Administrators' Noticeboard. The first sentence, warning about blocking for edit warring, was directed generally at any of the many edit warriors on that page.

the uw warnings

[edit]

Hi Atlant, regarding your note you left on Ryan's talk page about using the old templates. Just to give you some info, we looked into merging/redirecting the old templates into the new system a while ago, but there was far too much support for the old system still and it was decided to let editor choose for themselves whether they wanted to switch over. Maybe one day in the future we'll merge the two systems but for now, whilst editors still prefer the old system we're not forcing any one to change. Any way just thought I'd fill you in. Big Ben audio (Analog television)

[edit]

I'm not going to start a 'revert-the-reverted' game. This Big Ben story doesn't make sense at all, experienced delays have nothing to do with analog or digital. (Nor has 'poor lip-sync', by the way). You can even have a (bigger) delay in analog TV, depending on the route of the signal, the hops, the studios along the way, etc, etc. Ask any broadcast engineer. Still, if you want to keep it online, so be it. Enjoy. Rien Post 23:03, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

nothing to do with analog or digital
Well, it isn't exactly a question of analog or digital, but it is certainly true that there's quite a lot of computation involved in turning a video stream (whether analog or uncompressed digital) into an efficient MPEG digital video stream. Ideally, the compressor is looking across several frames at once and this is part of the delay but the computes are significant as well. At home, we have DirecTV, cable tv, and, of course, ordinary off-the-air broadcast TV. Watching a local station, DirecTV lags several seconds behind "the air" or the cable.
Atlant 23:13, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Of course there's a lot of computation involved. But that's besides the point. And what you see at home on your local station doesn't mean that the conclusions you draw from that are correct. Do you know how the various stations you're watching (and comparing) are processing their signals and which routes these signals take before they arrive at your place? I don't think so. Furthermore, if it isn't a question of analog or digital, as you admit, then why revert my edit back in the 'analog compared to digital' section? That last paragraph is nonsense. Ask any broadcast engineer (and duck). If DirecTV lags behind then that has probably more to do with their routing. Rien Post 23:37, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, if the user does continue his uncivil trolling, what would the proper course of action be? BH (Talk) 16:03, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've now given the user a 31 hour block for this morning's outbursts. And they'll keep getting longer and longer blocks as long as they keep up their bad behavior and folks keep noticing. ;-) But given that they're editing from an IP address, they may just change addresses and we'll need to reset and start over again.
Atlant 16:13, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The users block expires in a few hours, and I expect him to either 1) come back right away and continue with the activities that led to his block, or 2) Not come back at all. I think the first scenario is more likely, and will notify you if anything happens, and worn him on his page that the blocks will only get longer if he keeps up the same activities. Your signature

[edit]

Hi Atlant, I have noticed that your signature appears after a linefeed after your comments (I am referring to the science reference desk). Is there any particular reason? I thought it may be better to put it in the same line, like many of us do? Of course, it is a personal taste and no offense meant :-). -- WikiCheng | Talk 09:48, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer full block style as it makes it much easier to find my (or anyone elses's) signature, compared to trying to find it in a long line of text. I also find it amusing that my signature style draws so much attention (see my archived talk pages) when theere are so many more-pressing issues to worry about on the Encylcopedia. ;-) By the way, when it's useful to confine my reply to a single-line (as in votes and the like), I do use the more-Wiki-conventional style.
Atlant 12:49, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. I don't think it's any easier or aesthetically pleasing. --NEMT 13:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnotes

[edit]

Hi,

You added a line to Koh-i-Noor to disambiguation between it and the Czech company. For your info, we have hatnotes for this, which generates a pre-made template rather than dealing with formatting and such the like. WLU 17:26, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I haven't been editing enough recently to remember the latest incarnations of those templates.
Atlant 18:29, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I keep the link on my user page 'cause it's handy enough to refer to pretty frequently. WLU 20:46, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, regarding this recent edit to the Grommet talk page: [15]. Normally I would not object to reverting any edit on an encyclopedic page on, but as this is a talk page, not bound POV standards, I was wondering what was your justification? ~ Infrangible 03:08, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Talk pages are not chat rooms, they are places where we can discuss improving the article. The comment of yours that I removed wasn't aimed at improving the article. I've noticed that you add non sequiturs to talk pages quite often; perhaps you need to read WP:TALK for more information about what's appropriate on talk pages.

Questionable deletes

[edit]

I suppose we're getting off topic for the ref desk, but if you ever see another AFD that amounts to "I've never heard of this", I'd be interested in helping prevent bogus deletions. Such silly deletions should not stand- if somehow such an AFD is closed as a delete, it should probably be undeleted. I'd probably be termed a "deletionist" by some, but I'm just as interested in saving legit content as I am in removing whatever we cannot use. Friday (talk) 15:53, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but deletions are an area where I am clearly out of the mainstream (or one might, more accurately say: "the loudstream") of Wikipedian thought. Many Wikipedians use deletions as a weapon, and frankly, it makes me sick. So rather than fight every battle and see AfD after AfD discussion clearly reach "no consensus" and yet still be closed with the deletion of the article/category/what-have-you, I've pretty much just folded my tent. If I do see another really blatant example, though, I'll try to keep you in mind.
Atlant 16:02, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vendor Reference Voltage Regulator and Linear Regulator

[edit]

I tried to add something but you reverted it. I would like to discuss this, because I do not believe it to be "spam" yet you and Oli Filth mark it as such.

I firmly believe that mentioning the number 1 supplier worldwide (I will be happy to provide a reference) with a link is not spam. Voltage regulators are not merely theoretical objects, they exist and are sold on a daily basis. As such, a link to a suppliers webpage is relevant as a reference to what regulators are available at present. It also gives an idea of what parameters are important and what average parameter values might be (by looking at the datasheet). Spam is when a user tries to put something on a page as vandalism or advertisement. Wikipedia is an information source, and providing information about reality is not spam! I wanted to discuss this with you rather than trying to just revert back and forth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lagrangian (talkcontribs) 18:03, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter if National is #1 or #37; here at Wikipedia, the linkspam policy clearly discourages the posting of commercial links on a "generic" page like the voltage regulator page. Sometimes, if the list of manufacturers isn't long, it's accepted if all of the relevant players are linked, but there are just too many vendors of VR chips, bricks, etc.
I believe it is entirely reasonable to remove the NatSemi link.
I would also caution you to read about "Three Revert Rule" violations; I haven't looked closely at the edit histories of the various articles, but a casual glance says you're close to violating the rule.
Atlant 00:13, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am nowhere near the Three revert rule. I have never reverted one page more than once in a 24hr period. I also find your tone rude and condescending. --Lagrangian 15:39, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right: you only edited NatSemi into the Low dropout regulator twice in twenty four hours (and once more in the previous immediately-previous revisions of the article a few days ago). But that's why I said "close to" rather than immediately blocking you for a violation.

I noticed that there's a problem with the footnotes on your user page. The text of your user page references four footnotes, but only three footnotes actually exist. Speedy deletion of Parchment paper

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Parchment paper requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. There's no clear "line in the sand", but if it reads like a marketing brochure, then it probably needs to be edited to remain here at Wikipedia. For example, a marketing brochure may make the claim that "Feature X" provides three advantages: "A", "B", and "C". But an encylopaedic article would go farther and point out that advantage "A" only comes at cost A', and B only comes at cost B', and so on. Or it might point out how the amazing development of "Feature X" is, in fact, just an evolutionary development from some previous hundred years worth of steady innovation. The key is to adhere to a neutral point of view.

Removing email addresses @ Ref desk - How?

[edit]

Hi, a couple of questions if you can help. One is, when removing email (or personal stuff like phone numbers) from Ref desk question, is it possible to remove it from the history, or is it okay there where it's out of sight. The other is, when personal stuff appears is it okay for regular eds to delete, or only admins? Any help welcome, thanks (PS I have tried going through all the FAQs of many kinds at help and don't want to clog the desk with something that's likely repetitive) Julia Rossi (talk) 11:47, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

People with powers beyond normal Administrator powers can remove specific versions from the edit history, but it isn't done for something as simple as a redacted E-mail address. The point of removing E-mail addresses is to keep various spam-bots from scouring Wiki for addresses to victimize with Spam and, so far, I don't think the bots bother to reach back into the now-historical versions of a page.
And yes, we encourage any editor to make this change when someone posts their E-mail address -- thanks for asking!

Perhaps you should create the "reason" article ahead of adding the template (although clicking on the template's "red-link" is, admittedly easy). But more to the point, it's not at all clear to me that this user's username is inappropriate under our guidelines; I don't see a place on his user page where he promotes this company or product that you seem concerned about.
Atlant (talk) 19:48, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Try the the lead sentence of his autobiography (or the external links)?? Or maybe you could just read the MfD and discuss it there like everybody else... Also, WP:USER is the userpage policy, not WP:UN, which is the username policy. If you're going to tell me "You're wrong, it doesn't violate policy X" make sure I'm not citing policy Y≠X. I welcome your comments at the MfD, but would again ask you not to assume bad faith or remove deletion templates. --Cheeser1 (talk) 19:57, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

* Swiss Council of Religions <-- This article is linked from another place besides the DAB page
* Software Controlled Radio, radio equipment and related accessories that incorporate microcontrollers or are connected to a PC for their control. <-- This article could probably link to Software-defined radio although the match isn't exact.

I believe this fall into the category:
There is no need to brainstorm all occurrences of the page title and create red links to articles that are unlikely ever to be written, or likely to be removed as insufficiently notable topics.
"This article is linked from another place besides the DAB page"
How do you determine that? I only see it linked from a user's talk page. Hardly notable.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Celebration logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Celebration logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it may be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 13:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But AJzG's remark was an obvious attempt to use humor in conveying their message. You've got to realize that you've given awfully good cause for folks to react at least jokingly-negative to you. And if you push this to the point where the real Wiki officials get involved, I assure you that you won't like those results that accrue back to you. Update on the "flaming drink" question

[edit]

I just thought I'd tell you (Franamax, StuRat, hydnjo, Atlant) how the flaming drink thing went. Well, mixed results. It's all made, but sometimes it works and some times it does not. What makes it extra odd, is that it works 100% of the time for me, but only about 50% for the girl that has to do it. So far, three shows with an audience and it only lit once. UGHH!!!

What I did: I made a fire place poker out of mostly thin PVC pipe. In the handle is a gas grill starter with wires going inside the pipe. Franamax - You mentioned the handle idea and I had already thought of that, but I didn't want to steer people towards what I was already thinking. I guess it's just a case of great minds thinking alike. ;-)

All of it is painted with "Hammered" spray paint made for outside plastic furniture. Here's a shot of it close up without the flame. http://wonderley.com/shows/2008/FarmersDaughter/Photos/Page01/shots/2008-04-17~069.jpg That's me on the couch. In the sort of V shaped tip is the igniter at the tip and the other wire coming at an angle. My invention sparks 99% of the time.

In the coffee mug is a metal jigger that I raised to the level of the top of the mug with a piece of PVC pipe. That was a mistake. I made the level of the jigger come to the level of the top of the cup so that the most amount of the flame would be visible. It should be raised, but not all the way to the top. I have to pretend to drink from this cup and the jigger (which gets scolding hot) is hard to NOT touch if the jigger is too high.

I scuffed up the inside of the mug and the other side of the jigger to get the glue to stick to it. The fact that the jigger is metal does not appear to have any effect on the spark.

In the jigger was originally only about 1/16 of an inch of "Golden Grain" booze - 95% alcohol. At my house, it ignited every time. But, not for Cheryl. I later thought about it was having it on my kitchen counter. That's higher up so I was holding the poker at more of an angle on the mug rather than straight down. So, we changed the jigger to about an half inch on alcohol. Soon before going on stage with it, she moves some of it on the side of the jigger for even more surface area.

When we do get a flame the poker flames a little as well and she blows it out. That actually looks great. The idea of adding salt is awesome - Thanks Atlant. However, I had no luck dissolving salt in the alcohol. I warmed up some alcohol with having hot water all around it in a thin glass and stirred a lot of salt in it. I then let it settle some and used a syringe with a wide tip to suck up some of the alcohol from the middle thinking I'd get the best alcohol with dissolved salt that I could. It did not appear to make any difference in the color of the flame or the ability to light it. However, we put salt in a sugar bowl. Once lit, putting a pinch of "sugar" in the flaming drink was an awesome effect.

I also tried freezing some of the booze so that the 5% that was not alcohol would be solid and use the 100% alcohol that was left - after it warmed back up and it made no difference. In fact, whatever the 5% that wasn't alcohol, appeared to be unfreezable as well.

Thanks again for all of your ideas. If you want to see more about the show, visit Wonderley.com --Wonderley (talk) 09:48, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

... may sound like an exaggeration, but when I compare to some of the things displayed at the noticeboards and other places, the admins hanging out at the desks belong to the reasonable extreme. Another reason I hesitate to bring things to ANI's attention. The refdesk lot does a good job, and understands how this service works. It's helpful if the burden is shared among the regs who happen to be sysops (there is quite a number, I think). So, yeah, I think it's extremely reasonable for regulars to use their tools when it improves the desks or protects its readers. ---Sluzzelin talk 16:13, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but I posted this t-call onto the wrong user page earlier and just discovered my dis-location:

Phthalate

Oh, I'm in complete agreement with you. But the amount of phthalate used as a plasticizer in, say, iPod housings is unlikely to be transmissible into you or me at a level that can cause any effect (unless one routinely licks their iPod). It's a much different situation with Nalgene water bottles, infant formula bottles, and the like.

Thermocouples

[edit]

Hello Atlant,

It appears you wrote the page on thermocouples and I would like to pick your brain if I could. I have a few ovens that I built for the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol, and I want to be able to measure both the absolute and relative temperatures of various ovens. Before I build my final ovens, I have built some prototypes and I wasn’t even going to bother to spend the money on some nice (probably type K) probes. My ovens will run in the range from 200C – 450C. For temperature probes I just decide to twist a few wires together for thermocouples and see how the ovens perform, that is, that the ovens hold a constant temp and adjustability is suitable; absolute accuracy is not a concern for now.

This of course took me down the rat hole of understanding everything about thermocouples; interesting, but a little off topic. Anyway after finding some Seebeck Coefficients for some wire I had lying around, I attempted to make 3 different pairs of thermocouples.

1. Copper (S=6.5) / Baling wire – coated Steel (S=19, less probably because of rust coating; zinc plating, whatever 2. Copper (S=6.5) / NiChrome (S=25) 3. NiChrome (S=25) / Baling wire (S=19, a little less

For Calibrations I used an ice water bath for one end (0C) and boiling water for the other (100C); from there I put the hot probe in the oven but maintain the ice water bath as the reference. All 3 pairs exhibited an interesting catastrophic side effect, the NiChrome / Baling wire being the most observable. What happen, all seemed well as the temperature raised, then after a specific temperature (different for each pair) the voltage started to drop off with raising temps. With the NiChrome / Baling Wire pair I got a measured combined S=8.2 a little higher than the expected S=6 (25 – 19 = 6). The 8.2 uv/C was relatively constant from 0C-150C, beyond 150C the voltage sharply and dramatically reversed and dropped, dropped so much that my voltage went significantly negative by the time I hit 200C. The Copper / Baling wire pair did this much more slowly starting around 250C and getting back to zero around 500C. The Copper / NiChrome also seemed to do this. I did not like the copper because it oxidized at these temperatures, and as far as I know the drop in voltage could have been due to an increase in wire resistance; and thus my focus on the NiChrome / Baling wire pair.

I realize S is not linear, but the dramatic reversal at such low temperatures just doesn’t seem right; especially for steel and NiChrome, both used in other types of thermocouples. Any idea’s on why I would be getting this dramatic effect? If you know of a pair of readily available wires that would behave well up to about 500C, that would be nice too; at least I could get on with my work. Of course, I could go off and buy some real probes :-)

Xenon Flash Page needs work

[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you have commented in the past on the Xenon Flash Lamp article. I have built many hundreds of flashlamps, and various power supplies for them. After reading that article I feel that it needs some improvement, as some info doesn't make any sense, and one section is almost unreadable. I have proposed some changes, but I would like to get some input from others before I implement them. I'm fairly new a Wikipedia, and not sure how to include things like the references I've listed. Any comments you would like to leave on the Xenon Flash talk page would be appreciated. ThanksZaereth (talk) 19:37, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sagan number

[edit]

Hi. I see your comments on the talkpage, so thought I'd alert you that folks are trying to delete Sagan (number) again. I can't find any good sources online, but hoped you might have some ideas of where to find one or two. The article itself should probably be merged to one of the two places it is mentioned (as suggested at the talkpage), but it would be nice to have some verification beyond the jargonfile.

There is also a conflicting definition I've seen within the google results, of "number of stars in the observable universe". This might be worth mentioning (again, reliable sources needed).

Request for Participation in Wikipedia Research

[edit]

Atlant,

Your Request for Adminship (RfA) process was reviewed and studied by our research team at Carnegie Mellon University early in our project to gain insights into the process. We reviewed what voters discussed about your case, and what qualifications you brought to the table as a candidate. In total 50 cases were personally read and reviewed, and we based our further research questions in part on your case.

In continuing our research, I would like to personally invite you to participate in a survey we are conducting to get perspective from people who have participate in the RfA process. The survey will only take a few minutes of your time, and will aid furthering our understanding of online communities, and may assist in the development of tools to assist voters in making RfA evaluations. We are NOT attempting to spam anyone with this survey and are doing our best to be considerate and not instrusive in the Wikipedia community. The results of this survey are for academic research and are not used for any profit nor sold to any companies. We will also post our results back to the Wikipedia community.

This survey is part of an ongoing research project by students and faculty at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science and headed by Professor Robert Kraut.

Take the survey

Magnetic core memory - "core rope memory" section

[edit]

Hello Atlant, I had a look at this article months ago, just came back to it and picked up your comments on the talkpage from 13 April 2007(!) I feel that the 'core rope memory' needs a bit more explanation so I propose as below. I've actually pinched some of your talk for the explanation so thought I'd do you the courtesy of ensuring this is correct. Plus the fact you know about computers! I've actually repaired these types of memories.

original

[edit]
Another form of core memory called core rope memory provided read-only storage. In this case, the cores were simply used as transformers; no information was actually stored magnetically within the core.

new

[edit]
Another form of core memory called core rope memory provided read-only memory (ROM). In this case, the cores were simply used as transformers; no information was actually stored magnetically within the individual cores. The information was fixed by weaving the various "word lines" inside the core (for example, for a "1") or outside the core (for a "0"). It was set during manufacture by the person who originally wove the word lines (assembled the memory system). An example of it’s use was in the Apollo Guidance Computer used for the moon landings.

I hope this is technically correct, any revisions needed are welcome. --220.101.28.25 (talk) 08:48, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of AHANA

[edit]

A tag has been placed on AHANA, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

This article should be deleted because external sources are missing, and cannot be verified. Most important, this is not a encyclopedic content, and should be removed from Wikipedia

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dipankan001 (talkcontribs) 12:34, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Butcher block requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Atlant,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 04:31, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Atlant. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Atlant.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, Atlant. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Proposed deletion of Boonton Electronics

[edit]

The article Boonton Electronics has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS and WP:YELLOWPAGES. And if their reason for existence is not clear, WP:SPAM. Some of my articles got deleted or merged too (incidentally, they were on non-notable fictional entities, not from anime but from American sci-fi books - same ballpark, really). I wrote them 10 years ago and now that I understand better what Wikipedia is, I endorse their deletion. Regarding the Boston Electonics, again, please consider the difference between encyclopedia and Yellow Pages. Finally, check out my op-ed at WP:CORPSPAM. Discussion of deletion of the Golden Triangle (New Hampshire) page

Your recent image deletion

[edit]

You probably shouldn't have deleted the image of NH Representative Robert Fisher). If the image came from http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/members/member.aspx?member=377225 (i.e, the New Hampshire House of Representatives as was stated by the poster user:Mpljnbbwm), the image is almost-certainly free for use if not outright in the public domain.

You may want to restore that image.

Atlant (talk) 16:09, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The page has clear copyright labelling and there is no exception listed under Copyright status of work by U.S. subnational governments or the State Copyright Resource Center. It is almost certainly not free for use and not in the public domain. In general, the only thing States cannot assert copyright over are things like legislation and regulations. If you can find information saying that photos on this website are free to use despite a clear assertion of copyright, I'd be happy to read it and see if it falls in. A user could also re-upload the image with a proper fair use justification. Sasquatch t|c 17:01, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's funny: Aside from the fact that it must be "affirmatively adopted by individual state agencies", your second citation argues against your case:

N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 21-R: 14 establishes an Open Government Data policy to the effect that government-generated data will not be copyrightable. The policy is voluntary and must be affirmatively adopted by individual state agencies.

But in this case, we're talking about Legislation adopted by the Legislature itself so I think anyone would have a hard time arguing that they don't accept their own policies "Open Government" policies. Here's the referenced section of the law:

21-R:14 Statewide Information Policy on Open Government Data Standards. –
   I. The commissioner shall develop a statewide information policy based on the following principles of open government data. According to these principles, open data is data that is:
      (a) Complete. All public data is made available, unless subject to valid privacy, security, or privilege limitations.
      (b) Primary. Data is collected at the source, with the highest possible level of granularity, rather than in aggregate or modified forms.
      (c) Timely. Data is made available as quickly as necessary to preserve the value of the data.
      (d) Accessible. Data is available to the widest range of users for the widest range of purposes.
      (e) Machine processable. Data is reasonably structured to allow automated processing.
      (f) Nondiscriminatory. Data is available to anyone, with no requirement of registration.
      (g) Nonproprietary. Data is available in a format over which no entity has exclusive control, with the exception of national or international published standards.
      (h) License-free. Data is not subject to any copyright, patent, trademark, or trade secret regulation. Reasonable privacy, security, and privilege restrictions may be allowed.
II. The information policy developed under paragraph I shall include a mechanism for adoption and review by each state agency. Each agency that adopts the policy shall designate a contact person responsible for oversight and implementation of open government data standards for that agency. The contact shall act as a liaison between the department, the implementing agency, and the public in matters related to open government data standards. The commissioner shall include the status of the development and implementation of the statewide information policy based on open government data standards in the quarterly report to the legislative oversight committee under RSA 21-R:9.
III. In developing the open data standards policy, the commissioner shall solicit information from the secretary of state relative to state archiving practices and the collection of data for historical purposes.

Atlant (talk) 17:39, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Affirmatively adopted" here means that the the agency saying their data is open must clearly state that copyright does not apply within their policies - not the other way around. Do you have definitive proof that the agency responsible for the website has adopted the open data policy? The underlying presumption is that copyright still applies. This is compounded by the fact that the website itself includes a claim to copyright at the bottom of the page. You'll note that the second website gave NH an openness score of -0.4... That doesn't exactly lend credence to your argument that NH has embraced openness. There could be reasons that the legislature would want to retain copyright over certain website contents and that is the presumption unless you can find policy otherwise. I will reiterate that this could be re-uploaded under fair use, but it is unclear at best if copyright has been waived given that the Open Government policy requires affirmative action by an agency to adopt it and that the website itself clearly states the contents are copyrighted. Horn light listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Horn light. Since you had some involvement with the Horn light redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Steel1943 (talk) 05:37, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The principal difficulty with Wikipedia is that people who have NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT hold life-and-death power over articles by virtue of having the "loudest" mouths. Anybody who designs fire alarm systems in America (and probably Canada) knows what a "horn light" is and the %^@%#s who deleted the redirect could have learned this simply by Googling for "horn light" and switching to the "images" display; you immediately get hundreds of pictures of fire alarm horn lights. The article Guaranteed minimum value has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Dicdef. Not suitable for transfer to wiktionary as this appears to be a descriptive phrase used in many contexts to describe many different things, rather than a specific technical term with a set definition.

Wow! Your PROD gave the page a whole 7 days before it got zapped! How generous of you!

One of the reasons I don't much edit Wikipedia any more is that there are far too many people like you who look at an article and say "That doesn't interest me so I'll delete it". You were wrong to do so and you were certainly wrong to take the action so precipitously.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question about linking

[edit]

I recently edited a page about Adesto Technologies, and found they acquired Echelon Corporation. Echelon created the technology LonWorks, but now the name Echelon is no longer in operation and Adesto is taking ownership of that technology.

Given your editing experience, I figured you may have run into this before. Should I change the name of LonWorks's creator to Adesto, or leave as Echelon? Rexlikescheese (talk) 15:51, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How about something like "created by Echelon Technologies, now a wholly-owned unit within Adesto Corporation"? Atlant (talk) 10:57, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

I'd been doing a lot of my edits without the benefit of having logged in; I'll stop doing that!

Notice

The article Fill character has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

whilst a google search shows fill characters exist I don’t think it shows them to be notable enough to have an article

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Gladly! And I hope it asks questions about some areas that I have strong opinions about. ;-)

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

I'm sorry that you may have never heard of ASTs but Asynchronous System Traps were absolutely foundational for several of the operating systems produced by the old Digital Equipment Corporation and are extensively documented in the literature describing those operating systems. You can also find them still mentioned in computer sylibi:

https://cseweb.ucsd.edu/classes/fa05/cse120/lectures/120-l2.pdf

You might also want to consider Windows/NT's I/O completion ports which share a heritage with DEC's ASTs:

Thomas Dambo moved to draftspace

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Thomas Dambo. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it has no sources and it needs more sources to establish notability. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit for review" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 17:07, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
