Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

[edit]

You recently uploaded a new version of File:Signing ceremony for the Axis Powers Tripartite Pact;.jpg. When ImageTaggingBot added a template pointing out that you had not specified a source, you said that the source was the same. However, the image at the listed source (http://www.reformation.org/e-tripartite-pact.jpg) is still low resolution and watermarked. So, what is the source of the image that you uploaded?  ★  Bigr Tex 03:21, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think it is from this article on the website called National Interest. It is a larger version of the same photo. The current version is sharper. Alamy has a much higher quality version which shows a few more people. - Artanisen (talk) 19:55, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (2nd request)

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Hideki Tojo into Bushido. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 21:31, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Diannaa, sorry in the page Revision history I mentioned on 2 August 2020‎ "taken from the page Hideki Tojo, please see that page for full attribution." So I thought that was sufficient. I can add a direct page link with future updates. I could rewrite that information a bit. - Artanisen (talk)

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Japan-Ministry-of-Defense-Logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:43, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Japan Ministry of Defense logos requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! [edit]
Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Japan shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Canterbury Tail talk 12:34, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note you've been around Wikipedia long enough to know how this works. You inserted information, it's been reverted by several editors, the onus is on you to get consensus on the talk page to include it not to edit war. Canterbury Tail talk 12:35, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did not "insert information" I restored information that was on the page Japan for a long time before it was unilaterally removed by user "Nichijyou123" on 31 August 2020. "National Foundation Day (legendary) February 11, 660 BC", because this is Officially Recognized by the Government of Japan. It is also a national holiday. - Artanisen (talk) 12:39, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You reinserted information that has been removed from the article multiple times. No consensus has ever been established for that to be included which is why it has been removed about a dozen times over the last year alone. You should know that on Wikipedia we need consensus for this. At this point you are edit warring, take it to the talk page. Canterbury Tail talk 12:43, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That information was already on the page for a long time. I did not create new information, I restored the information that rightfully belongs on that page. - Artanisen (talk) 12:45, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ultimately it's irrelevant, you're editing warring. Canterbury Tail talk 12:45, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is not irrelevant though. I did not revert more than 3 times (the three-revert rule). - Artanisen (talk) 12:49, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Common English words

[edit]

Note on Wikipedia per WP:OVERLINK we do not link common English words. For instance legend and legendary are common English words that every English speaker knows what they mean. As a result we should not be linking them in Wikipedia. Canterbury Tail talk 12:38, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Susanoo holds the Kusanagi no Tsurugi"

[edit]

Hi! Sorry to contact you on your talk page, but since the edit was made so recently I figured it would be better to ask you than simply removing the questionable wording. Do you have a source for this edit (or this one)? Because the article to which the edit was made says that the sword was found in the serpent's body after it was killed. Hijiri 88 (やや) 12:46, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hijiri88. I read that in an article a while ago, but maybe it is incorrect. Another explanation: "After slaying Yamato no Orochi, the god Susano-o found this sword in one of the eight tails of the gigantic serpent." it can be changed to that. There is a different Ukiyo-e with the Kusanagi no Tsurugi. I can upload it. - Artanisen (talk) 13:19, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, I'd like to see that, yeah. I just googled 浮世絵 草薙 and the closest I found was more images of Susanoo-no-mikoto fighting Yamata-no-orochi with an unlabeled sword. Hijiri 88 (やや) 16:29, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the artwork to the Kusanagi no Tsurugi page. See here for more information. - Artanisen (talk) 17:47, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Higher-quality image uploads

[edit]

I noticed on a couple of images you uploaded to Commons (one of them being commons:File:Taketori Monogatari 2.jpg) that you uploaded versions that you called "bigger and bit sharper", when in reality they were just poor upscales of the existing image. Lots of external websites seem to scrape original book scans from Commons and upscale them (which is what I think happened in this case), so please be careful in the future not to upload upscales: the way I check is by scaling the original small image to the size of the new one, and judging that way. — Goszei (talk) 23:11, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Goszei, sometimes the higher quality versions do look better than the original low resolution version. It depends on the image quality. So they should not all be discarded. In this case the original is sharper, but also smaller. - Artanisen (talk) 11:01, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Artanisen: If you want an image to display larger than the file dimensions, you can have the software do the upscaling (see WP:PICSIZE). Commons policy actually disallows overwriting files with upscales (see [1], which forbids Artificially upscaling or enlarging using any tool). — Goszei (talk) 08:11, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Goszei: Whilst minor improvements should overwrite the previous version (replacement with higher resolution versions of the same file). So when there is a higher quality version of the same photo or image then it can be overwritten. -Artanisen (talk) 08:30, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Artanisen: True, but an upscale from an original scan is not a "higher-quality" version.
If you were to rescan the book that the original scanner did, then overwrite, that would be excellent (and fine under Commons policy). If you were able to find a higher-quality scan online of the exact same page, that would also be a great overwrite.
However, the image that you uploaded in the case I linked was done artificially (i.e. by an computer algorithm, which perform interpolation; see Image scaling) -- you can tell because of the upscaling artifacts. This does not represent an increase in quality, just dimensions. — Goszei (talk) 08:41, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That isn't clearly noticeable, because the current uploaded version is poor quality which doesn't reflect the real artwork. The original artwork has sharp contrast and colors. If you can find it then please upload it. -Artanisen (talk) 08:44, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Artanisen: I agree with you completely, and hope we can find better scans of every single piece of artwork. The vast majority of your uploads to Commons are great and big increases in quality, but I just ask you to be more careful at making sure you are overwriting with a version with higher quality (aka, a different scan), instead of upscales or other interpolations from a low-quality scan (which introduces blur artifacts). — Goszei (talk) 09:01, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to better check other versions of images. - Artanisen (talk) 14:45, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Takashi Araya requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Kant image

[edit]

Hi @Artanisen, please stop changing the Kant image everywhere you can find it. Your preferred version is looking in a different direction and has a lot of black space around his face. In many cases, that means it looks bad on a page.

If you think it is in some cases better, please take that to the talk page—or at least provide justification with an edit summary.

Thanks, Patrick J. Welsh (talk) 13:33, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Patrick J. Welsh. Please stop reverting it to a very low blurry version. This version is a much higher quality version of the same painting. The version you prefer is 1. very low quality, 2. incorrect colors, 3. very blurry, 4. Kent looks in the wrong direction. -Artanisen (talk) 13:35, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At a thumbnail size, the quality is completely fine. The way the portrait is painted is not necessarily the way that it looks best on a page, which often has Kant looking to our left. Please use the talk pages of individual articles reach consensus when your preferred version is challenged. You are not doing readers a favor by globally replacing the image chosen by page editors with something different.
Thanks, Patrick J. Welsh (talk) 13:46, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At thumbnail size, the colors of the version you prefer are incorrect compared to the original. He also looks in the wrong direction. People will click on the thumbnail as well which is very low quality compared to This version . You're not being constructive by restoring a low quality image that is a bad crop of the original painting. I checked this version . The original image was uploaded by Ben-nb~commonswiki in 2006. It was enlarged by the user Amano1 in April 2014. Amano1 cropped a part of the original image and changed the colors. That's why it's so blurry and low resolution. -Artanisen (talk) 13:49, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not about the painting! Not at all. It's about what representation of Kant looks best as featured on any given article.
If the painter has an article (or deserves to have one created), by all means go to town with all the details you've got on the original "correct" color pallet and so forth. Otherwise fidelity to original painting is not a relevant factor.
Please consider what looks best on the page instead of imposing your preference everywhere all at once. Patrick J. Welsh (talk) 13:57, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The original Immanuel Kant portrait doesn't have a yellow glow and tint as this version . Upon closer inspection we can see the user CarlFromVienna replaced the original image with a different version in 2008. The original image was uploaded in 2006 by Ben-nb~commonswiki. Then in 2014 Amano1 enlarged the small image (from 294 × 371 to 964 × 1,388 pixels) and changed the colors and cropped a part. To put in simple terms; this version is a badly edited, oversized and low quality version. It doesn't properly represent Immanuel Kant. It suits the Category:Images of low quality. P.S. I cropped the top part of this version so that it's more focused on Kant. - Artanisen (talk) 14:07, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am Ofelya from Armenia, my friends and I initiated a project "Works on Wikipedia", we are cooperating with armenology experts, historians, and archeologists to publicize articles on Armenian topics. We are creating, editing, and translating articles in different Wikipedias, but actually, now we have some problems connected to the English Wikipedia. April 2024

[edit]

Please take more care in your category application. You should not be adding categories for things that aren't even mentioned anywhere in the article. That's pretty much a guaranteed way to fail WP:DEFINING. Please make sure you're familiar with the concept. Thanks. Sergecross73 msg me 20:36, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure it can be added to the article. Please don't remove something and not give people the time to add such information. Artanisen (talk) 20:38, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're doing it backwards. You need to be adding it to the article first, then adding the category. It's not helpful to add categories that don't make any sense to the reader. Without a single mention in the article body, the category is going to make zero sense to your average reader. Stop doing that immediately.
And even the above is the bare minimum to even entertain whether it meets WP:DEFINING. You've seemingly made a few questionable applications of the Native American category, but the one I was referring to was for Code Name S.T.E.A.M. The game has been out almost a decade, and to my knowledge, I don't believe a character being Native American has been mentioned ever, at any point. That's not exactly a great argument in favor of this being a DEFINING aspect of the game.
Regardless, please start following WP:BRD and open up discussions rather than continually reverting. Thank you. Sergecross73 msg me 20:47, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many of the articles do mention that the character is Indigenous or (part) Native American. It takes a lot of time to add information and references to the articles. You need to give people time to build up the categories. Your tone is demotivating. You were reverting constructive contributions (categorization) of the articles. -Artanisen (talk) 20:49, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that it takes time. I've got a bunch of long-term projects I'm working on myself. But what does that have to do with what I'm warning you about? None of that addresses any part of my warning. Have you read, and do you understand, DEFINING? Do you understand that, even if DEFINING did't exist, adding categories that aren't self-explanatory isn't helpful, and may only serve to confuse the reader? Sergecross73 msg me 20:58, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned earlier, many of the articles DO mention that the character is Indigenous or (part) Native American. There is no confusion with those articles. If it's not mentioned then please let me know and I will add such information. If an article is wrongly categorized then you can say so too. Just categorizing all these articles took a lot of time. -Artanisen (talk) 21:01, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, I was merely warning you about some I observed as wrongly done. Please listen to SnowFire below. They are giving you good information. Particularly on DEFINING. There's a huge different between "defined" and "defining characteristic". Nothing you've said to either of us convinces me you understand it yet. Sergecross73 msg me 21:16, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do understand DEFINING. These categories are work-in-progress. It has taken significant effort to find each game and character. -22:29, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Native American categories

[edit]

Hello Artanisen,

I realize you're adding this category in good faith... and I'm also not necessarily the best messenger here because I personally think a ton of the fictional media categorization categories shouldn't even exist at all... but I think you should be a little stricter in which articles get this category. Per WP:CATDEFINING, categories should be "defining" features, as in things that would definitely come up in a description of the topic and have clear inclusion criteria.

  • Characters who are merely "coded" as a ethnicity/nationality only rarely qualify (e.g. the Suikoden III example with the Karaya Tribe). This includes most fictional settings with characters who are clearly inspired by a real-world group. The exceptions are when there's truly a massive pile of sources saying it's relevant, or for films with real-world actors (and even this is shaky IMO).
  • For stuff like the Street Fighter and Killer Instinct: In general, games with ensemble casts aren't categorized by every single member of the ensemble. Per above, it really does need to be defining. If there's a spinoff article/redirect on T. Hawk or Lily or the like, then fine, but it shouldn't apply to the game as a whole.

Happy to bring this up to a wider discussion at WT:VG if you'd like, but per above, I think some of your additions to the category should be reverted. SnowFire (talk) 20:39, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SnowFire, it can be added to the article to have it clearly defined. As you can see in the category there are currently very few games with Native American characters, so it's worth categorizing. -Artanisen (talk) 20:44, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is incorrect as a matter of categorization on Wikipedia. Please read WP:CATDEFINING and then come back.
(...)
Okay, back? Did you read it? Please affirm you did. If some aspect is a defining element of the topic, it should already be in the article. And ideally as a major part. So to flip things around, I think categorizing the Turok series with this category is fine: Turok is right in the title and a major part of the game. But other games you've added come down to "Native Americans exist" and that's not defining. It might be defining in the cases where a spin-off article on that character exists, and you might get away with categorizing some redirects a la T. Hawk, but it's not defining to any specific Street Fighter game (or other fighting game series that merely has one character of ethnicity XYZ).
As far as "very few games with Native American characters", that's true, but that doesn't mean we loosen our standards. Take Category:Films about Native Americans for example: it should include stuff like Smoke Signals (film), not every single Western that has an American Indian appear in one scene. And if it does, then it's far less useful. SnowFire (talk) 20:58, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, let's look at a couple of articles. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. = an important character called Tiger Lily, she's described as Native American. Fatal Fury: First Contact (and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers) = Rick Strowd (Native American). Kasumi Ninja = the character Pakawa (Native American). Killer Instinct (1994) has Thunder (Hinnamatoom). Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light = Totec, an ancient Mayan warrior (important character). Metal Gear Solid = the antagonist Vulcan Raven (Native Alaskan American and Inuit). Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain = Code talker (Diné (Navajo) descent). Mortal Kombat 3, 11, Armageddon, Deception = Nightwolf is a Native American shaman. Nightwolf has his own article, so the games could be removed from the category, but it is useful to quickly see a list of the games. Power Stone (video game) = Galuda is a Native American inspired character. The game has a fictional setting though, but Galuda could qualify. Red Dead Revolver = Red Harlow (half Native American). Red Dead Redemption = Nastas (Native American supporting character), Enepay (Native American minor character). Red Dead Redemption 2 = Charles Smith (half Native American), Rains Fall, Eagle Flies, Paytah (Wapiti Indian). Shadow Hearts: From the New World = Shania is described as Native American. SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, Street Fighter 6, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Street Fighter IV = T. Hawk (native American). He doesn't have his own article, but he's described here, so we could only link to that article (page). -Artanisen (talk) 21:34, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(de-indent) This is an answer to a question I didn't ask. I'm already familiar with most of these games, thanks. Please read what I wrote above more closely.
You also did not verify you read you've read CATDEFINING. Have you read it? I ask again that you explicitly respond. I'm going to assume "no" if you keep ignoring this question.
Okay, let's hope you've read CATDEFINING and know what "defining" means as a "term of art" on Wikipedia (not necessarily the same as what you think it means in casual English). Let's forget all of the specific details and just talk about films instead. Do you think a film with one minor character who is Native American should be in Category:Films about Native Americans? Let's say they have like 5 lines and 3 minutes worth of screentime. If yes, then you basically disagree with CATDEFINING. (Of which you have company, unfortunately, I'll admit that there's a small group of editors who does love to stick every tiny reference into a category, but they're doing so in defiance of the guideline.) If no, then read my point above more closely. There have been 120+ playable characters in Street Fighter games. A few Native American characters is the equivalent of a small role in a film, and thus you shouldn't categorize the entire work by that one small role. And more generally, if you did, then we'd have overcategorization, where categories would be a mess of 100+ random small things hiding the 5 relevant categories. SnowFire (talk) 21:51, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also have the right to ask questions sir. Yes I read CATDEFINING. The category is a work in progress so it can be changed and improved. I agree that a game shouldn't be overcategorized. So I gave examples such as T. Hawk and Nightwolf, those specific articles could only be categorized rather than every game they're in. -Artanisen (talk) 21:52, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But... you didn't ask me a question? If you did, please point it out to me, and I'll answer it. Thank you for affirming that you've read CATDEFINING, because this is a very important policy to be familiar with when creating categories. And yes, I agree that it is more productive to categorize the T. Hawk or Nightwolf redirects rather than every game they're in.
To try to put a more positive and less hostile spin on things, if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage here, note that we have an article Native Americans in film. I could absolutely see an article like Native Americans in video games that discussed stuff like Assassin's Creed III and other major depictions of indigenous Americans. You'd probably want to hit up some book / academic sources on the topic, and it'd have to be a referenced article, not just a list of characters. But I'd suggest that might be a better way to spend your time. SnowFire (talk) 22:02, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do try to be constructive and positive. I do listen to your feedback and thanks for taking the time to give that. So I removed most Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games from the category. I find your communicative style condescending though. Yes an article about this topic would be very useful. Likewise, these categories are also useful to improve awareness about Native Americans in video games and to make it easier for users to find the characters and related games. If there's any mistakes then sorry about that and it can be corrected. -Artanisen (talk) 22:14, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Cobra engine is absolutely a notable engine. It has been used in many world-famous games that sold millions of copies. It's also responsible for various game genre innovations. -Artanisen (talk) 16:58, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Artanisen Notability is not inherited (WP:NOTINHERIT). Otherwise, Wikipedia:Write the article first. It would probably belong at Cobra (game engine). Currently it does not have an article, and no reliable secondary coverage has been presented to argue the case. Until it has an article and notability established with sourcing, it does not belong on the list or in the infoboxes. -- ferret (talk) 17:23, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see you've started an article, which is great, but you should be ready for it to end up in Draftspace. The article currently lacks any independent in-depth sources about the game engine. It has two primary sources and a non-independent interview. Please see WP:GNG and WP:NPRODUCT for more information on notability guidelines. -- ferret (talk) 19:48, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, this article is under-development. It takes time to build-up an article. There are currently 3 references. Also I disagree with your claim that this article does not meet notability.
