Welcome

[edit]
Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:

Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia

The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome!

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of James Davidson (Scottish architect), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/architect_full.php?id=200705.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) [edit]

Warning icon Hello Andrewdwilliams, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your addition to James Davidson (Scottish architect) has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 02:03, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I see that you are fairly new here, and perhaps still finding your feet. I absolutely don't want to discourage you from participating in the project, but I do want to make quite clear that we can't allow text that belongs to other people to be added to the encyclopaedia. The Dictionary of Scottish Artists page on Davidson carries a clear copyright notice ("© 2014, Dictionary of Scottish Architects"); the content on that page can not be copied without the permission of the copyright owner. Any text you write here must be (99.9% of the time) in your own words. It isn't enough to rearrange someone else's words a bit; what we call "close paraphrasing" is also unacceptable. Can I suggest that you follow some of the blue links in the template above to learn a bit more about how this works here? You are welcome to make additions to the Davidson page, as long as they are in your own words (you can add the same meaning, but it must be expressed in a different way from the source text). If you have questions you can ask them here – I should see them. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 02:18, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:James Davidson (Scottish architect).png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:23, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Robert Scott (footballer, born 1870)

[edit]

The article Robert Scott (footballer, born 1870) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced article about a non notable athlete, fails WP:GNG

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016

[edit]

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Red Turban Rebellion (1854–1856)

[edit]

Hi! Thank you so much for adding to Red Turban Rebellion (1854–1856), a stub I created in the hope that someone with better knowledge of the topic (not a high bar, I can assure you!) would do exactly that. To my dismay and chagrin, I've had to remove your additions because they constitute close paraphrasing of the source. Just as an example, if the source says "The trouble had begun with the Taiping incursions across the border from Guangxi", and you write "The disorder began with the various Taiping excursions across the border from Guangxi", it appears that you have copied that text, even if one or two words have been changed.

Just as an aside, changing the referencing system without prior discussion is generally frowned on. I've changed it back. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:07, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that, Justlettersandnumbers. I was planning to do some more work on it, but left it after only the background section. As a result, through something that is entirely my own fault, I did not flesh out parts such as the one you highlighted as I used only one source. So it's inevitable that close paraphrasing would occur. I did not follow the subsequent edit warring, but hopefully I'll get around to writing up something decent on the topic. I'll sandbox it first. On the referencing, for the same reason that I only applied minimal attention to the article, I did not read through the academic article that you referenced. Partly because page numbers did not appear to have been used in the reference, which is fine, but for the sake keeping up quality in the referencing, I find it preferable that page numbers are included where possible so that people know exactly where to look to verify something. Thanks for notifying me about the whole thing. Andrewdwilliams (talk) 18:42, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be very pleased if you do find time to expand it a bit. As for the page numbers, I fully agree. I'll fix that. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:16, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I sound passive aggressive. I'm trying not to. I have some familiarity with China in the 19th century, but not expert knowledge on the Red Turban Rebellion. With a few sources, though, I should be able to write something of a decent quality. Andrewdwilliams (talk) 20:33, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you add reference to the National Assembly of South Korea in your edit of the Halifa Sallah article? —BarrelProof (talk) 00:36, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why? I did it by accident. Did you need to bring it up on my talk page? --Andrewdwilliams (talk) 09:20, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought it was odd, since the edit explicitly added a piped link to the South Korea article ("[[National Assembly (South Korea)|National Assembly]]"), so it looked intentional. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:58, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gambian Constituencies

[edit]

You linked here Kiang West. I think, we must for long term (!) separate between Constituencies and Districts. These aren’t covering, for example Illiassa is a Constituency and not district. And something else: the gambian subnatuional entities are now after 10 years "regions" and not "divisions". Nobody has these changed in the engl. Wikipedian. --Atamari (talk) 09:09, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. But both of those tasks are big ones, and for the moment I'm focused on coverage of politicians, organisations, and recent history. This is certainly something to add to the 'to do' list though. --Andrewdwilliams (talk) 16:53, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

the Gambia or The Gambia

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your comments. To help discussion better can you move your comments to above the vote section. And add a simple !vote in the section reserved for votes. I found your discussion very illuminating, by the way. —አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 02:03, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I reorganized the section. Apologizes for reformatting your comments. Could you add your !vote when you are ready as well.—አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 02:20, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's no problem at all. --Andrewdwilliams (talk) 12:18, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of colonial governors of the Gambia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page William IV. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Note

[edit]

The party color of PODIS is brown, see:

--Atamari (talk) 21:29, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, thanks. Hadn't spotted that page. I'll get around to fixing all the party colours so that they are the same as that page at some point. --Andrewdwilliams (talk) 21:41, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another Note: Madi Ceesay is Madi M. K. Ceesay, a new elected Member for National Assembly. I moved the german article to Madi M. K. Ceesay. --Atamari (talk) 14:16, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

and ...

my draft (maybe you can profit from it):

Remarks

[edit]

User:Andrewdwilliams/sandbox ("RAF Bathurst initially included three airfields, at Half-Die, Jeswang and Yundum"):

Half-Die: Seaplane base → see c:Category:Seaplane base at Bathurst
Jeswang: see de:Flugplatz Jeshwang, built 1932, RAF use it from June 1941 and move 1943 to Yundum; Jeshwang closed ~ 1955; see map for Jeshwang landing area.
--Atamari (talk) 21:31, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Atamari. I'm obviously still working on the article, but I'll take it into account. I'm just working off what I can get sources for at the moment - all in due course, though. --Andrewdwilliams (talk) 22:13, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Another Draft: de:Wikipedia:WikiProjekt Gambia/Blue Book; about "Blue Book Reports – Gambia" oder "Annual Report of the Colonies – Gambia" (Also in my possession) - see: i have found this source: here, digitized from Volume 1890 to Volume 1938. A treasure... :-) --Atamari (talk) 23:24, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This was an odd edit, subsequently reverted by someone else. Why were you removing cited text - and why do that without explaining your edit? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 13:21, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
