Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf15) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on February 20. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on February 25, and all Wikipedia wikis on February 27 (calendar).
- The new search tool (CirrusSearch) was added to the Italian Wikiquote and all Wikiversity projects. Users can now enable it in their Beta options. [1] [2]
- The Universal Language Selector was enabled on all Wikimedia wikis again. You can enable web fonts in your ULS options (see how).
VisualEditor news
- You will soon be able to add and edit

WikiProject AFC is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from March 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014.
Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 900 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

- Evening WikiSalon on Wednesday, March 12 from 7 PM – 9 PM. Meet up with Wikipedians for coffee at the Cove co-working space in Dupont Circle! If you cannot make it in the evening, join us at our...
- March Meetup on Sunday, March 23 from 3 PM – 6 PM. Our monthly weekend meetup, same place as last month. Meet really cool and interesting people!
- Women in the Arts 2014 meetup and edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 30 from 10 AM – 5 PM. Our second annual Women in the Arts edit-a-thon, held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Free lunch will be served!

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf16) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on February 27. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on March 4, and all Wikipedia wikis on March 6 (calendar).
- When users enable web fonts by default, Universal Language Selector will now log if they don't have fonts to display pages correctly. This information will be used by developers to improve font support in the future. Read more about missing fonts. [16]
- You can now use Guided tours on the Czech and Japanese Wikipedia. If you want this tool on your wiki, you need to translate it and ask in Bugzilla. [17] [18]
- You can now use information from Wikidata in all Wikisource wikis. [19]
- The multimedia team is now posting weekly updates on their mailing list. [20]
VisualEditor news
- You can now change image size to default for your wiki. If you add new images to pages, they will also be default size. [21] [22] [23]
- If you switch from VisualEditor to wikitext editing, your edit will now be tagged. [24]
- Template parameters now have a bigger, auto-sizing input box for easier editing. [25]
- VisualEditor now has Arabic, Finnish and Kölsch icons for text styling. If you want icons for your language, ask in Bugzilla. [26] [27] [28]
Future software changes
- The new tool for viewing media files will soon show a progress bar and a thumbnail while loading full images. [29] [30]
- You will soon be able to make user contributions show only page creations. [31] [32]
- Article Feedback Tool will be removed from the English and French Wikipedias on March 3. It will also no longer be possible to add this tool to any Wikimedia wiki. [33] [34]
- Wikis using the new search tool will come back to the old tool for a few hours starting at 00:00 UTC on March 6. [35]
Problems
- For about an hour on February 23, there were problems with page loading due to a MediaWiki bug. [36]

VisualEditor news
- It is now easier to edit templates. Complex tools are now in the "advanced" mode. [39] [40]
- It is also easier to edit images. You now have more options and they are explained better. [41]
- VisualEditor adds fake blank lines so you can put your cursor there. They are now smaller and animated to be different from actual blank lines. [42]
- We have improved the tool to add special characters. The buttons are now larger. More changes are coming. [43]
- You can now use new keyboard shortcuts to undo the last action, clear formatting, and show the shortcut help window. [44] [45] [46]
Future software changes
- You will soon be able to use a Beta option to show a shorter list of language links. That way, Universal Language Selector will only show languages that are relevant to you. You will still be able to search for other languages. [47]
- CirrusSearch will soon automatically index newly imported pages. [48] [49]
- It will soon be possible to use CSS to style buttons in templates on all Wikimedia wikis, without needing JavaScript. [50]

The University of California, Berkeley's Berkeley Center for New Media is hosting our first edit-a-thon, facilitated by WikiWoman Sarah Stierch, on April 5! This event, focused on engaging women to contribute to Wikipedia, will feature a brief Wikipedia policy and tips overview, followed by a fast-paced energetic edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend.

VisualEditor news
- You can now double-click or press the ↲ Enter key on an image or template to change its settings. [64] [65]
- Pages that don't exist will now show as red links in the edit mode. [66]
- You will no longer be able to try to use VisualEditor on pages translated using the Translate extension, and you will see a warning if you try to edit pages marked for translation. [67]
- You will now see a full warning, including the most recent log entry, when you try to edit protected pages with VisualEditor. [68]
Future software changes
- Typography Refresh will be enabled for test wiki and MediaWiki.org users who use the Vector skin on March 27. For users on non-Wikipedia wikis, it will be enabled on April 1, and for Wikipedia users on April 3. If you don't use Vector as your skin, you will not be affected.
- You will be able to use the Hovercards tool as a beta feature on all wikis from March 26.

An exciting month of wiki events!
Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

- Reduced page load time significantly once again. Page load time was cut to roughly 2/3. For now we’re happy with the resulting page load times. We’ll start concentrating on other areas of the user interface now.
- Fixed faulty selection handling when adding a property using the keyboard (bugzilla:62868)
- Worked on fixing issues with handling of spaces in quantities (bugzilla:62567)
- Fixed miscount of Wikidata changes on the client watchlist (bugzilla:45812)
- Wrote new browser tests for special pages using the Cucumber and Selenium frameworks
- Improved error formatting, localisation and handling. We will work on error message wording next to make them more understandable.
- Worked on the code which propagates page moves from the clients into Wikidata as a preparation for allowing page deletions to appear on Wikidata
- Made the Wikibase extension work with the new “Compact language links” Beta feature and a bit more independent from the UniversalLanguageSelector in general
- The student team working on the entity suggester has finished the first version of it. The code is being reviewed now and is hopefully ready for deployment soon. Once it is deployed it will show you what new properties you could add to an item.

Final results are available here. Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf21) was scheduled to be deployed to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on April 3, however it was temporarily put on hold due to localization issues. (calendar).
- Typography Refresh was enabled on non-Wikipedia wikis on April 1, and on all Wikipedias on April 3. You'll only see it if you use the Vector skin.
- CirrusSearch was enabled as the primary search method on over 400 non-Wikipedia wikis on April 2. [81]
Future software changes
- A new special page (Special:TrackingCategories) will soon list all the tracking categories on a wiki. [82] [83]
- All Wikiquote projects will start using language links from Wikidata on April 8. [84]

VisualEditor news
- You will now see only three options when you try to add a template parameter in VisualEditor; you will see other options after a click. [94]

- The wikitext editor tab will now fold into a drop-down menu in the Vector skin if there is not enough space on your screen. [95] [96]
Future software changes
- The font used for body text on Wikimedia wikis will change to your system default sans-serif font. This temporary change will be enabled on all non-Wikipedia wikis on April 15, and on all Wikipedias on April 17. [97] [98]
- Files from Commons seen on another wiki will soon have a tab saying "View on Wikimedia Commons". The create tab will change to "Add local description" (see screenshot). [99]

- This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
- On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf5) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on May 15. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on May 20, and all Wikipedias on May 22 (calendar).
- The jQuery JavaScript library was updated on May 16. Please check that your gadgets and scripts still work. [185] [186] [187]
- MediaViewer was enabled for all users on the Kannada (kn) and Telugu (te) Wikipedias on May 13. It will be enabled on the German (de), English (en), Italian (it) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias and on all Wikisource wikis on May 22. Feedback is welcome. [188] [189]

Notification of a June AfC BackLog Drive

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from June 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014.
Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 900 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

VisualEditor news
- VisualEditor's welcome message and wikitext warning now say that you can switch to source mode editing and keep your edits without saving them. [204] [205] [206] [207]
- A bug that caused files not to appear after saving edits in the
File:namespace was fixed last week. [208] [209] - VisualEditor tabs will no longer appear in namespaces where VisualEditor is disabled. [210] [211]
- It is now possible to edit inline images with VisualEditor; many minor bugs related to images have also been fixed. [212]
- VisualEditor will no longer convert spaces to underscores inside links to pages in namespaces that include spaces in their names. [213]
Future software changes
- Wikimedia Labs will stop working for about 10 minutes around 18:00 UTC on May 30 due to a server upgrade. [214]
- It will soon no longer be possible to upload different files under the same name at the same time using the UploadWizard tool. [215] [216]
- Links to TIFF, DjVu or PDF files created with the syntax

Washington, DC meetups in June
Greetings!
Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:
- On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
- Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
- The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
- Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
- Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.
Wikipedia is better with friends, so why not come out to an event?

- CirrusSearch was enabled as the primary search method on all Wikipedias with less than 100,000 pages on May 30. [222]
VisualEditor news
- Templates that redirect to other templates now get the TemplateData of their target. [223]
- The toolbar of the PageTriage extension will no longer be visible after you save an edit with VisualEditor. [224] [225]
- VisualEditor now checks if your browser supports SVG files to avoid displaying broken icons. [226]
- There is now a new type for TemplateData parameters:

| Guild of Copy Editors May 2014 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 51 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We reduced our article backlog from 2,987 articles to 2,236 articles in May, the lowest backlog total since we began keeping records in 2009! Since at least 300 new articles were tagged during May, that means we copy edited over 1,000 articles in a single month. Amazing work, everyone! Blitz: The June blitz will run from June 15–21. VisualEditor news
- You can now drag-and-drop selections of content, not just files and templates. [275] [276]
- When dragging an item, you will now see a line that helps you to drop it. [277] [278]
- You can now only move an image to the start of a paragraph, not to the middle of it, so you don't accidentally split it. [279] [280]
- You will now be warned if you add wikitext to file captions and references. [281] [282]
Future software changes
- You will no longer be able to upload files on wikis that do not have any copyright tags. [283] [284]
- CirrusSearch will be enabled as the primary search method on additional 70 new wikis, including Meta-Wiki and Wikimedia Incubator, during the next week. [285]
- CirrusSearch results will soon take into account categories, the first paragraph and the wikitext of a page. You will also be able to use regular expressions to search the wikitext. It will take a few days for the changes to be enabled on all wikis. [286]

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July
I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.
What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf12) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 3. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 8, and to all Wikipedias on July 10 (calendar).
- CirrusSearch was enabled on July 1 as the primary search method on 36 new wikis, including the Norwegian (no), Portuguese (pt) and Ukrainian (uk) Wikipedias. [310]
- It is now possible to create Atom or RSS feeds for Word of the Day, Word of the Week and similar entries on Wiktionary wikis. [311] [312]
- You can now use a graphical interface to edit TemplateData information on the English (en), French (fr) and Italian (it) Wikipedias. [313] [314]
VisualEditor news
- Saving an edit with VisualEditor will now be much faster. [315] [316]
- You can now add a caption when you add a file to a page with VisualEditor. You can also change the file to a different one and keep the existing caption. [317] [318] [319]
- When you switch to the Edit source tab, you are now asked to keep your changes. You no longer need to find the option in the menus. [320] [321] [322]
- The reference tool that adds empty
<ref></ref>tags is now at the bottom of the Cite menu, below references that use templates like{{Cite web}}. [323] - Context menus will no longer be shown over items that you can edit directly, for example formulæ. [324] [325] [326]
Future software changes
- Starting on July 9, it will be possible to globally rename global (SUL) users. The feature was first scheduled for July 1, but was delayed due to bugs.
- A plan to enable CirrusSearch as the primary search method on the 11 largest Wikimedia wikis has now been prepared. [327]
- If you use references on a page, you will soon always see them at the bottom of the page, even if you forget to add the
<references />tag (or a template). [328] [329] - Black-and-white XCF images will soon display correctly. [330] [331]
- Description pages of SVG files will soon always show download links for multiple resolutions (example). The links were previously shown only for SVG files in large original resolutions. [332] [333]
Problems
- Between July 2-3, there were problems with loading pages on multiple wikis due to a configuration issue. [334] [335]
- For a few hours on July 1, there were problems with uploading new files on Wikimedia Commons due to a configuration error. [336] [337]

- Two new GuidedTours (aka interactive tutorials) have been released—we now have one on editing items and one on editing statements! Both tours are available from the Wikidata:Tours portal and feedback can be left on the talk page at Wikidata_talk:Tours. The work was a combined effort of User:Bene* and Outreach Program for Women intern User:Thepwnco.
- We passed another milestone \o/ 10 million items now have an "instance of" or "subclass of" statement making it easy to tell what the item is about.

- Bene* worked with the dev team this week. He pushed forward support for storing badges (eg featured article) on Wikidata and implemented the first two guided tours.

- Continued work on mockups for new user interface
- Investigated what issues come up if we make wikidata.org its own client. Things look good so we will probably enable it soonish. This will mean you can link Wikidata pages in items and access the data in them on other pages on Wikidata.
