Order of the Bath

[edit]

Regarding your recent edits to the Order of the Bath - to those who are knowledgable about military matters, service branches are clearly defined by their respective rank. However, to the average layperson, most have zero idea about which rank belongs to which service branch, and many people do not know the difference between the major service branches (let alone individual regiments or corps)! Even BBC (and ITV) journalists describe members of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy as 'soldiers' - and they are expected to be educated in such matters. Furthermore, the Order of the Bath is primarily a chivalry award, and not directly related to the modern military (save for very top of high ranking military officers). The Order of the Bath is very different to awards such as the Victoria Cross, George Cross, Distinguished Flying Medal, campaign medals, or long service medals - which are specifically for military service. All readers of Wikipedia articles should not need to click on link after link to find basic information which should be in the article they are reading! Don't forget, millions of users in poorer countries with limited internet access read only static pages of English Wikipedia, so are unable to click on wikilinks. (If you search on the app store of your mobile device provider, you will find the official and some unofficial 'reader-only' apps for Wikipedia, and some also access other WMF projects.) So I strongly request that service branches should be reinstated. As for capitalising table headers, that is not required in British English, and you will see many (possibly thousands) of articles using British English which use lower case table headers - unless they are proper nouns! I totally agree with your edit regarding heads of state though! Best regards. Militum professio scriniarii (talk) 11:28, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I note your comments and consider them more than fair in the circumstances. I never really saw myself as having vast knowledge on military matters, but have since come to understand that something that I take for granted might not be obvious to someone else. I further agree with your remarks about journalists' lack of idea on matters that they are paid to research; a pet hate is the use of 'troop' to mean an individual soldier, when it is a military sub-subunit, subordinate to a squadron. Although in simple terms, people are 'awarded' honours, I prefer the language that tends to be used within the Establishment, namely 'appointed to', 'conferred on', etc. Based on your well-made points, I shall endeavour to reinstate the service branches; however, whereas I take on board what you say about table headers, I am going to leave them with an initial capital letter, as they will then match the other British orders of chivalry pages - consistency is key, I believe, yet should not be based on a whimsical Wikipedia policy that might not have been thought out properly in the first place. With best wishes. ZeroAlpha87 (talk) 16:44, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
