[edit]Hello, I'm Miner Editor. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Sami Yusuf, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. YouTube is not a reliable source. Miner Editor (talk) 15:18, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Minor.
- Sorry I think you are the one mistaken. The reference attached is an Al Jazeera interview of Sami Yusuf stating in person, on video camera, on an official mainstream news that he is Sunni Muslim. I even gave the minute in the video when he stated his religion.
- How can one not get more reliable then the person in question stating his religion on video camera for the world to see? Hence I am confused as to why you undid the edit.
- All the best! 86.5.202.27 (talk) 15:32, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for not edit warring, and for your willingness to instead first discuss the matter. In the video, Yusef said he "embraced" Sunni. He does not say he IS "Sunni". Additionally, in the video Yousef is talking in the past tense, not the present tense. For such a non-trivial issue, there really should be a more solid source, in my opinion. These objections may seem to be a minor quibble, but on matters of religion in biographies of living people, Wikipedia requires impeccable sourcing, and that video is not enough for me.
- Other editors may disagree, but I am not comfortable restoring your edit. You might want to start a discussion on the talk page for Sami Yousuf, or ask others at WP:RSN which is the "Reliable Sources Notice Board" where questions about the reliability, and appropriateness, of sources, can be discussed. Miner Editor (talk) 16:29, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Minor,
- No worries about edit wars. They are just a waste of time, and a matter of ego.
- I do think you are making this trivial matter bigger than it is. If someone was to embrace 'Sunni Islam', I would ask what does that clearly make them? For someone who's entire career is based of making Islamic music to this day, present/past tense is extremely trivial.
- Also I again reiterate I am not sure what stronger evidence there is for a source if their is direct video of evidence of said person.
- All the best 86.5.202.27 (talk) 22:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MAAf42XbAk&ab_channel=Spiritiquelover where someone asked him if he was Sunni or Shiaa and he answered it by saying he is "Hanafi" which is a Sunni school. Unlike the Al Jazeera video you linked, this video is on "Spiritiquelover's" YouTube channel, and cannot be considered reliable for use in Wikipedia. However, combine that, along with the Al Jazeera video you linked, combined with many, many other mentions on-line by members of the Muslim community of him being Sunni with no one disagreeing, and I am comfortable with Wikipedia saying he is Sunni, and with using the Al Jazeera video as the source. I will go ahead and restore it momentarily. Miner Editor (talk) 04:20, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Miner,
- Thank you for your kind dialogue and thank you for restoring the edit. I suppose a compromise could possibly be to add the video you also found as a secondary source? (Well if that is a thing on Wiki). I say this because again what is a stronger source than video evidence if said person? :) If not then lets leave it how it is with just the Al Jazeera source
- Best wishes! 86.5.202.27 (talk) 15:43, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- The Al Jazeera source can be used on Wikipedia because Al Jazeera has a good reputation. The Spiritiquelover source is from a minor YouTube channel with no reputation I can find as a source for information, and using such a source is very much frowned upon on Wikipedia. The reasoning is, videos can be altered or selectively edited and we must depend on the source's reputation. I personally have no doubt to question the Spiritiquelover source, and it did finally convince me that calling Yusuf a Sunni would be fine, but it really can't be used as a formal source on Wikipedia. I think just having the Al Jazeera source will be fine, but I will put the Sami Yusuf article on my watchlist and if anyone challenges the Al Jazeera source, I will object and discuss my reasoning for thinking it is sufficient. Miner Editor (talk) 22:51, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Minor,
- Thank you for taking the time out to explain. It makes sense now. You are correct, it is better to use legitimate sources as anyone can tamper with anything today on the internet.
- Once again thanks for your patience and kindness. I have learnt a lot about Wiki rules from you. All the best! 86.5.202.27 (talk) 00:21, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm That Coptic Guy. I noticed that in this edit to Sufism, you removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — That Coptic Guy (let's talk?) 18:43, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Excuse me before speaking, I would like you to look at the edit history of the page for the last 2 weeks. Someone or a group of people have been purposefully vandalising the page with odd or even no sources. Someone even stated that sufism is pagan in origin and has nothing to do with islam, and had been unchecked for goodness knows how long. Please do better and target the ACTUAL people who are destroying the page.
- Also as you have an account please can you lock the page and bring it back to how it was a few weeks ago. As you can see I have in the past always added accurate references with my edits, the most recent being Syed Hissein Nasr to make sure the page is accurate. People are trying to ruin that 86.5.202.27 (talk) 18:48, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
