Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Maritime museum may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Ship infoboxes

[edit]

Please read Template:Infobox_ship_begin/Usage_guide, especially the parts labeled Ship name and Ship identification.

Trappist the monk (talk) 17:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have just used an automated script to go through the list of your edits and repaired the faulty |Ship name= and |Ship badge= parameters in many of your edits. Please, read Template:Infobox_ship_begin/Usage_guide. It tells you pretty much everything you need to know about ship article infoboxes. Got questions that aren't answered there? Ask them at WT:SHIPS. The editors there will help you.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:03, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

When replying to a post on a talk page, it is generally better to make that reply on the same page so that the conversation doesn't become fragmented. So, I've copied your post on my talk page to here and will reply to it here. You wrote:

Trappist-I have already had someone bring this up like an hour before and have since stopped (even though I have seen a ton of articles with "USS" in the name). I have just been trying to standardize the info boxes somewhat but again I have omitted the "USS" from my future revisions. Also what "|Ship badge=" was wrong? I did find one on USS Cavalla but I fixed it. I normally check everyone I edit so i'm sorry I missed one. I'm sorry if I sound blunt i'm just trying to let you know I don't mean to do all this "willy-nilly" so to speak. 85 GT Kid (talk) 00:21, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

The purpose of Template:Infobox ship begin/Usage guide is to promote a uniform look to infoboxes in ship articles. It is the result of a lot of hours of discussion and editing by members of the WP:SHIPS project. So, if you are going to standardize stuff in infoboxes, standardize in accordance with the guideline. The guideline is just that though, a guide. For example, while the guideline doesn't say it, if the infobox has a caption that is the ship's name, see USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850) for example, then that name need not be in |Ship name= because it's redundant. In fact, were I you and were I undertaking the task of standardizing ship infoboxes, instead of adding the ship's name to |Ship name=, I'd be adding |infobox caption=yes to {{Infobox ship begin}} when the infobox isn't captioned. The caption is very helpful to those who read Wikipedia with a screen reader program.

Infoboxes in ship articles are set to just a hair wider than 300 pixels. This accommodates a 300 pixel image and gives enough room for the information in the infobox. When you add a ship's badge image and specify its size as thumb, the image and the boarder that thumb adds increases the width of the infobox. To repair the infoboxes to which you had added these thumbnailed images, I replaced thumb with 180px. That removed the boarder and set the image to a size that doesn't change the overall width of the infobox.

I am a bit concerned about the ship badge images. Have you obtained the copyright owner's permission to post the images on Wikipedia? I know practically nothing about image use and copyright issues but I suspect that there are editors at WT:SHIPS who do. I think that you should ask there if you can or should continue to add ship badges from NavSource.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited USS Batfish (SS-310), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Presidential Unit Citation (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I had noticed that on the captons but never thought of that. I will try doing that from now on. Thank you for the pixel idea I couldn't figure out how to get it smaller except for using "thumb" so again thank you I will fix that from now on. I reread the guidelines again and I think I am but I did post on the Ships Talk page for help. Sorry I meant to check that link. Thanks for the help!--85 GT Kid (talk) 14:16, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, USS South Dakota BB-49

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, USS South Dakota BB-49. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – USS South Dakota (BB-49). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at USS South Dakota (BB-49) – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Nigel Ish (talk) 10:16, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nigel yes it does need to be deleted as i finally found the "(BB-49)" one. It was on a redirect page and so I had a hard time finding it but I have since added info to that page instead. Thanks for the help. 85 GT Kid (talk) 13:13, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
