Pope Pius IX also sent his portrait to Jefferson Davis. The assertion that the Vatican did not formally recognize the Confederacy is technically correct, but certainly the Pope made clear that the Church affiliated more with the Confederacy than the Union. This was in keeping with the Roman Catholic Church’s tolerance of slavery at the time.
