Kang Youwei (19 March 1858 - 31 March 1927) was a Chinese politician, philosopher, thinker and reformer in late Qing Dynasty. He was born in a feudal bureaucratic family. But he was one of the first people in late Qing Dynasty getting in touch with western advanced cultures. Kang Youwei promoted reform to Emperor Guangxu multiple times. He devoted himself in the Modernization Movement. In 1898, Liang Qichao and him initiated the Hundred Days' Reform including abolishing the outdated systems and enlightening new thoughts. After Hundred Days' Reform was terminated by Empress Dowager Cixi, Kang Youwei was in exile oversea. However, he turned to a royalist in his later life. He opposed the republicanism and supported Henry Pu Yi's restoration. Yuan Shikai and hime became the leader of the restoration movement after that.

As a politician and reformer, Kang Youwei initiated reforms to enlighten the advanced thoughts. And as a philosopher and thinker, he raised many feasible and practical thoughts in economic, political and educational areas. He also made an achievement in the field of literature. Liang Qichao and him was the leading characters of the "New Culture". His "Da Tong Shu" was a representation of his Confucianism combining with thinking on his present.
