The Southeast Asian Wushu Championships is a sub-continental wushu championship hosted by the Wushu Federation of Asia (WFA), the official continental representative to the International Wushu Federation.

Similar to how the Asian Wushu Championships and wushu at the Asian Games exchange roles every two years as providers of continental wushu competitions in Asia, the Southeast Asian Wushu Championships are to be held when wushu is not included in the SEA Games. Wushu has appeared at the SEA Games since 1991 except the 1995 and 1999 editions which is when the Southeast Asian Wushu Championships were held. The Southeast Asian Wushu Championships were being proposed to be held again in 2025 when wushu was originally excluded from the 2025 SEA Games, but this decision was reversed after disapproval by many national federations.

History

[edit]

1995, Hanoi

[edit]

Wushu first appeared at the 1991 SEA Games and an edition later at the 1993 SEA Games. With plans to make the 1995 Games smaller, it was announced in early 1994 that wushu would be excluded from the program. The Southeast Asia Wushu Federation was thus formed in June of the same year and accepted by the IWUF in October.[1]

Thus, the Southeast Asian Wushu Championships were organized in Hanoi, Vietnam.

1999, Yangon

[edit]

Wushu was excluded from the 1999 SEA Games due to budget restrictions and thus the Southeast Asian Wushu Championships were organized to be held in Yangon, Myanmar from September 30 to October 4, 1999.[2][1] The host nation won 11 gold, 8 silver, and 10 bronze medals.[1]
