[edit]Uranium-lead dating relies on measuring the isotopic composition of both elements, which is accomplished using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. In thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) U-Pb dating, a solution with a known ratio of synthetic 205Pb and 233U isotopes is added, a process known as isotope dilution. This allows measurement of the natural isotopes in relation to the synthetic ones. From the known synthetic Pb/U ratio, the 206Pb/238U and 207Pb/235U ratios in the sample can be determined.
