Barnstars

[edit]
The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar
For many years of defending Wikipedia from the forces of the abyss. Ben Aveling 11:31, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
You were here when I joined Wikipedia, and you've been much more constant than I have. I've learned a great deal from you, and while we have not always agreed on who is evil and who is just different, I have always respected the passion with which you have fought what we both regard as monsters from the abyss. Regards, Ben Aveling 11:31, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Although I usually disagree with you, I just wanted to say thanks for all your contributions to the various global warming related articles. And also for occasionally making me smile. Thepm (talk) 11:12, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Keep up the good fight

[edit]

It seems odd that having an expertise in a field makes one have a COI in the eyes of some. I'm glad that the COI case against you was closed and was heartened that sanity prevailed. Even though I voted for you, I'm also a bit glad that you did not become a Arbitrator b/c I think you are needed more on content patrol and improvement. I know from experience that being on ArbCom is a soul-sucking task with hardly any rewards but a hell of a lot of unnecessary drama. All it did for me was burn me out for a long time. I don't want that to happen to you. Keep up the great work! If you collected barnstars, I would make this one. --mav (please help review urgent FAC and FARs) 22:02, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Home-Made Barnstar
This barnstar is given in appreciation of William M. Connolley for his resilience in the face of those who would use him as a whipping-post for all their climatological gripes, his tolerably good humor in spite of these unending ordeals, and his keen wit that makes him one of the most effective Wikipedians with whom I have worked. Awickert (talk) 19:36, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

The Admin's Barnstar
I joined up in August, '06. The first person to block me was William M. Connolley. Naturally, I hated him, plotted his downfall and sacrificed tiny chickens to the Dark Gods from Before Time to curse him with boils of an unpleasant sort. Now, nearly three years later, I sacrifice mythical goat-sucking birds to the the Dark Gods Before Wikipedia in hopes that William M. Connolley remains in fine health, and willing to do mundane, tedious, and often emnity-gathering work that is required of an admin. Because of you, sir, I am a better editor, and I thank you for it. The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar
Even though it's been restored, we really need people to be more proactive in deleting NPOV-violating material. Thank you for restoring a little bit of my faith. Sceptre (talk) 00:02, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

After returning from a wikibreak of a couple of years I've been having a look round some contributors whose work I used to admire and I'm pleased to see you're still going strong. So here's a barnstar for defending the absolutely crucial topic of climate change from the utter bullshit that gets hurled at it by Wikipedia's less informed souls. You are a huge asset to the project and you must have the patience of a saint. Keep up the good work! — Trilobite 03:57, 27 January 2009

The Hall of The Greats

This portrait of Robert De Niro was dedicated in his honor.
David Shankbone.

William - famous scientists is one area I have ignored, and one reason we likely have never crossed paths. I dedicated this photo of De Niro for all the work you do on this important area, one I am of no use to, but one where even I know what good work you do. --David Shankbone 02:35, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I Wikibofh(talk) 02:40, 29 June 2006 (UTC), hereby award WMC this WMB for calmly working 3RR. It is typically a thankless task that, as near as I can tell, you are carrying the lion's share of.

Compliments / Endorsements

[edit]

Naturally enough, I tend to end up talking more with people who I am trying to agree wordings with, which (on controversial pages) tends to be people who disagree with me. So its nice sometimes to have people who do agree with me. The RFC especially brought this out.

  • William M. Connolley is widely viewed in Wikipedia as being highly knowledgeable in the field he is writing about (the arbcomm: [1])
  • a professional scientist who has adopted a couple of controversial topics - areas within his considerable expertice. He does a good job keeping the articles focused on the science ([2] Vsmith)
  • Keep up the good work WMC ([3] G-Man)
  • His knowledge of the science related to climate change is comprehensive... I would like to commend William for his excellent work on Wikipedia ([4] Sunray)
  • he's been struggling to present accurate and neutral text ([5] Mel Etitis)
  • WMC tries to keep articles readable and focused, and very much tries to keep nonsense out of them. I am very glad that someone does this necessary work ([6] Stephan Schulz)
  • always willing to discuss disputes, and makes concessions where he feels it is appropriate ([7] Graft)
  • Thank you for your recent edit [8] to this article. That is exactly the kind of editing that Wikipedia needs more of to nip this sort of dispute in the bud, before it becomes a problem for the articles and editors. Keep it up! Cheers --Ryan Delaney
  • Connolley has done such amazing work... Jimbo Wales, reported in Nature: see [9]. More recently, I get a brief mention (at 9:30 ish) in an interview Jimbo did.
  • I'd just like to say that you have been handling all the edit wars and attacks from the dissenters quite well, despite their accusations of incivility on your part. Keep it up; Wikipedia needs more people like you. -- Cielomobile talk / contribs 17:50, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
