History
[edit]Formation and early years
[edit]The New was formed in March 2009 by Lori Garrote (vocals/guitar) and Natalie “Smallish” (bass/vocals). In the early years before meeting Garrote and smallish took music classes where they quickly peeked an interest in starting a band. Influences of Joan Jett/Nirvana/Hole/Green Day/Veruca salt and many more were extremely evident. They formed when meeting in high school in June of 2000. Garrote sat around wailing time away on her guitar and smallish new she had to twiddle with the bass to make something happen. After a couple months of acoustic fun party sessions a close friend referred an experience and determined musician Natalia “Gnat” Novoa as a drummer. From months of writing together Garrote and Smallish had an albums worth of songs to present to Novoa. Magic happened and Instantly they became AKA.
Just a bit over 3 months of practice AKA hit the stage and played their first show January of 2004. Stunning the entire Miami local scene people couldn’t believe a 3 piece all girl band had once again emerged. Word of mouth travels fast and there was coverage and press everywhere. AKA was the first all girl band to bring the spunk and inspiration back to the Miami scene. Every boy band wanted them on their bill. Soon after Novoa had to depart to NYC for personal reasons and the band later met Nabedi Osorio. This line up built the reputation AKA has today remained the band remained steady for about 4 years these girls and they did it all they pushed buttons, challenged the boys, and were not afraid to show themselves with their high energy and intense loudness that could blow your face off. The girls were sought out by 2 time Grammy award winning producer John David Thomas, it was time to put all of this energy into a full length album. It wasn’t until mid recording Garrote and Smallish felt they were going in different musical directions than Osorio, the band split up and it just remained them two. Garrote and Smallish decided to finish the album together as a 2 piece with a brand “New” name. THE NEW. And it sure was time for a new direction. Right after their release they met Jordan Calloway (Keys/back up vocals) and Giselle “Giz” Forte (Drums). Soon a diverse fan base developed and magazines around the world began to take notice. Since forming, The New has drawn major media attention and have been featured in magazines such as Girl Magazine, Closer and many more. Since forming the new signed with Ocean Front Records in 2010 and they will be touring the east coast coming July.
