From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lifting of Martial Law Anniversary is a commemorative day stipulated in the "Implementation Regulations on Memorial Days and Holidays" of the Republic of China. It is held on July 15th every year. It is only commemorated and not a holiday.

Taiwan's lifting of martial law

This anniversary was established to commemorate President Chiang Ching-kuo lifting of "Martial Law in Taiwan" on July 15, 1987. The martial law order was promulgated on May 19, 1949 and came into effect the next day. It lasted for more than 38 years and had a profound impact on post-war Taiwan.

In June 2007, the Executive Yuan held two meetings to negotiate the "Series of Activities to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Lifting of Martial Law ", and decided to request the Ministry of the Interior to designate July 15 as the anniversary. The Ministry of Interior immediately revised the "Implementation Regulations on Memorial Days and Holidays" and designated July 15 as the anniversary of the lifting of martial law. On June 20, the Executive Yuan meeting reviewed and approved.
