Locator maps show the position of one small geographic entity inside a larger entity. There are many ways of graphically depicting such a configuration. The two primary types of locator maps are the area locator map and the point locator map. Point maps show a very small entity in a larger entity (e.g., a city in a country), while an area locator map shows a small entity that covers a significant portion of a larger entity (e.g., a province in a state).
