Have you ever heard of the Philippines' "Nation's Girl Group" Bini? Of course not. This is the first we ever heard of Bini, not the Bini the Bunny. So, I'm here to introduce you to who they are. Drum roll.
Introduction
[edit]Bini, formerly known as Star Hunt Academy Girls or SHA Girls, is a Filipino girl group from the Philippines, accompanied by eight groups: Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena. They debuted on June 11, 2021, with their single, "Born to Win". They are signed to the Philippine record label Star Music.
Fandom
[edit]The name Bini was taken from the Tagalog word binibini, which means "young lady". It was a more respectful way or more formal to address a young woman like Magandang araw sa iyo, binibini. (Good day to you, young lady.) The fans of Bini are called "Bloom(s)" or more stylized as BL∞M(S), and their tagline was Walo hanggang dulo (Eight until the end). Well, the "Bloom" reflects the journey and symbolizes of "beginning of springtime, that there is always beauty after every cold trial.". They used it from their fan suggestions during a special announcement on the livestream.
Their formation on Star Hunt Academy
[edit]This is quite exciting. Laurenti Dyogi, ABS-CBN's Head of Entertainment Productions had the idea to create a group at the training camp where youth aspiring to become superstars or more likely to be famous and develop their talents. In 2018, ABS-CBN launched Star Hunt Academy (SHA) which had 250 auditionees between 16 and 19 years old over the Philippines. Dyogi planned to debut 9 members but he changed his mind to eight groups, which is not quite surprising or maybe he can't handle that many members of the group, two of the members Sheena and Gwen are originally housemates from Pinoy Big Brother: Otso. Bini trained for one year under local coaches, who included Kitchy Molina, a professional vocal coach and former chair of the Department of Voice, Music Theather, and Dance at the University of the Philippines College of Music.
Pre-debut
[edit]Fast forward to 2020, they have a pre-debut single and collaboration with MU Doctor Academy and South Korean music production group Vo3e to transform national artist Ryan Cayabyab's novelty song "Da Coconut Nut" into an electropop remake. In December 2020, they signed a contract with Star Magic and Star Music.
Debut
[edit]In May 2021, Bini released their first official debut with a QR Code with the caption "Are you ready for the Biniverse?" and multiple teasers on their social media. the music label, Star Music, announced the group's official debut with a single titled "Born To Win" released on June 4. Also, the group hosted the first segment of their debut launch, Bini: The Runway and broadcast via KTX, and this was a lit and good start as their popularity rose. In February 2022, the group was featured too on the cover of the Dubai-based magazine Xpedition as "The Burgeoning Grace", and one of the Filipino celebrities with boy group BGYO, to have an NFT magazine cover launched on the Metaverse.

On the other hand, "Pantropiko" was a hit viral on TikTok with a dance challenge called "Pantropiko Dance Challenge" which millions of users participated. They recognized on X (formerly Twitter) like MTV, Pop Crave etc. According to MTV on X post that Cherry on Top was a lit and they can't stop listening and have a obsession on the song. On August 2024, Bini and P-pop boy band SB19 was chosen to receive Voices of Asia Award in Billboard Korea's Billboard K Power 100 launch event to recognize their significant contributions to Filipino music and their promotion of P-pop on the global stage. However, on 2023, SB19 was number one on pageviews with 493,158 views and Bini have 41, 275 views only. While i'm writing on this article, the daily views are growing and growing and stable on two thousand views.[e] Also, I will credit to all Blooms who really supporting and always visiting the article.
Controversy
[edit]Well, controversies are inevitable, as no one is perfect, right? Well, Bini member Aiah call out about her "privacy and boundaries". Aiah shared on Instagram that AJ Fernan tried to invade the personal space at the bar, where she was relaxing with friends after the "Biniverse" concert. After the post, Star Magic head Laurenti Dyogi reminded the public to respect girl group's privacy and free time. Aside from Aiah, her bandmate Maloi was also subject to a similar incident, after being mobbed by fans while dining out with her family in Batangas, Philippines. She has yet to address the incident, as of press time. Still on Maloi have a controversy too. Maloi was promoting a tote bag or shopping tote bag of official Bini merchandise, she described that tote was a functional, sturdy and "perfect" accessory for her matching outfit and the price was ₱199 or $3.44. In the comment section of Maloi's Tiktok, she closed the comment section after criticized the tote bag. After that issue, some fans defended Maloi on social media and shared their opinions about the issue. Some people criticized that the tote bag is a "trash bag" or lookalike of a trash bag. But, despite of the criticisms, they still continue to support the promoting and buying the (shopping) tote bag.
Final thoughts
[edit]It's challenging to share an opinion on this as a fellow fan of Bini. However, I find the aggressive behavior of some fans concerning, especially those who appear unwilling to accept criticism like, Kung ayaw niyo, huwag kayo bumili. (If you don't like it, don't buy it) reflect this attitude. As fans, we should remain open to constructive criticism and reviews, particularly from those with expertise. Still, if others choose to reject critcism outright, it's important to acknowledge that we can't always change their perspective. To Maloi, I hope this situation serves as a learning experience. While it may feel disrespectful to disable the comment section—though it could have been a decision from the management, so I won't place the full blame on you—it's important to acknowledge both positive and negative feedback. Constructive criticism can help you to grow and improve, and mistakes should be addressed rather than to ignore it. If mistakes aren't cognized, how can be lessons be learned and growth achieved? But despite of this controversy, Bini is a phenomenal and can't expressed a words how they're lifted the Filipino Music Industry, like the time flies and it's just like yesterday. The hard work of Bini the blood, sweat and tears that we all seen on the first day until the present on how they're successful now. Endorsements, concerts and some collaborations on other Filipino musicians and over the world, we've seen that. As of this writing, I am happy that Bini was recognized too on Wikipedia that I am shocked and other editors of Bini didn't see that or in slang it's not on my bingo card list. I hope that in 2025 they're still recognizable and more awards and make the Filipino pride and this will be a slobberknocker[f].
